It SAYS voice and data and there are already TONS of Tri-Band UMTS/3G smartphones available worldwide, so I wonder why people make such a big fuss out of it.

I think it's just that there was only ATT that provided 3G in the US? But now Tmobile coming in and many have been waiting for a long time now. I think you need a quadband UTMS phone or the one with the Tmobile band which I think is 1700 and not many have that yet?

If the 1700 MHz frequency is correct, there will be at least 4(!) phones with the 3G support for this band when the service starts tomorrow.
Or to say it in a better way: FOUR phones will be available starting tomorrow.

Anyone get a chance to use it?

7 minutues till 5-3-2008. No new phones on T-mobile.com

t-mo's 3g networks/phones avail...bummed

im not sure why i just expected my dash to be 3g enabled...i just figured that when tmo would roll it out theyd give ya a new sim and viola!...so when i call and ask when, effin tmo says YES, we have 3g in dallas (so im all excited...bummer) and since dash obviously isnt compatable, instead of paying 400 bux early termination JUST to have faster net with att, im curious to what phones tmo offers that are either similar to dash or better(but under 300 bucks)
my next question, with a 3g sim card...would i be able to just buy an htc (anything cool) or can i use another network's 3g phone and unlock it?
i would really like to keep my dash, but i really want faster net/youtube.
so basically, what are my options for a 3g phone using tmo's network and best htc's phone "bang for the buck"-qwerty or touch doesnt matter.
thanks in advance for the help, much appreciated
T-Mobile in the US is unique because as far as I know, they're the only mobile company in the world running their 3G network on the 1700 MHz band. (AT&T uses 1900, I think.) This means that unless your phone is specifically designed to run on T-Mobile's network, chances are you won't be getting 3G. I searched pdadb.net, the only phones it lists with a UMTS 1700 radio are the X1, a new version of the Kaiser, and a couple of Japanese phones.
man im kicking myself hard now, tmo is so stupid...
exactly what i needed to know, great info on the 1700mhz, i coulda really F'ed myself...so a big THANKS is in order!
Tmobile will be getting the HTC Dream with Google Android on it. Almost any tmo rep will confirm that in store. Also one rep told be the Blackberry Bold and Blackberry Kickstart will be out shortly like end of the month or next month. He said that the Bold and Dream are of course 3g but not sure on the Kickstart.

Nice. The only thing that is keeping me from jumping right on it is no Exchange at release. They say they are expecting thrid party release of exchange apps.
Looks pretty basic at the moment. Needs alot more to have WM/iPhones worried.
G1 with AT&T
Is this Tmobile phone coming to the US? If so can I put on at&t's network?
I would want edge and 3g.

T-Mobile USA gets it, but no 3G on AT&T. Gets 1700/2100 3G, AT&T requires 850/1900. Sorry.
Damn, guess I'll have to wait for the smart guys to get android working on my tilt. Would I at least get edge speeds with the G1 on AT&T? Or is it a no go all together.

It does have quad-band GSM which would let you receive EDGE signals from AT&T, but there are no details about sim-unlocking the device or how exactly you would need to reconfigure the settings.

IMPORTANT: We all (T Mobile USA costumers) have a problem

OK I don't think that anybody has raised this problem. If someone did than I'm sorry.
We (T Mobile USA costumers) have a big problem with this phone and and all 4g phones if this merger with AT&T goes trough. T Mobile uses 1700 and 2100 MHz AWS spectrum for 4G but AT&T wants to migrate all T Mobile costumers to 1900 MHz for 4G and use 1700 MHz for 4G LTE if the merger goes trough. I checked the specs on Phone Arena and it show this: UMTS:900, 1700/2100, 2100 for this phone and as you can see, it does not have 1900 MHz for 4G.Which means that this beautiful phone will became a brick more or less (no 3G or 4G). Anyone has any information about this? I mean T Mobile is really going about to sell a phone knowing this?
PS. I was against this merger even before finding out about this
here you can find a article about it http://goo.gl/JWIe9

I think even if the merger does happen it's gonna be at least a year or more before we see any changes & from what I heard they're gonna keep both spectrums for more compatibilities

I'm just hoping that the deal doesn't go through & tmous gets that $6bil to roll out LTE
No they don't have any plans to keep both spectrums. Read the article

it was told to me by customer that not to worry that if the merger does go through tmobile customers will be given replacement phones of equal value

And you are going to make a purchase like this based on hopes? Because that is nothing more. A comment from a customer rep that don't know much. Everybody that calls T Mobile know that. You have to go to level 2 techs before they start knowing what they are talking about it. Anyway the official statement from AT&T does not say anything about replacing the phones and guess who will be in charge if the merger goes trough? I give you a hint, it will not be that costumer rep that is trying to sell you a phone.
I've read that sensation 4g has an 1900 MHz
not 100% sure but from the box shots I've seen of the released UK version and spy shots of the T-mobile US version, the only difference is in the 3G/UTMS frequency.
UK is 900/1700/2100
US is 1700/1900/2100

guys.. its not like when at&t officially buys tmobile, there going to disconnect the 4g lines. thats going to take another 6-12 months AFTER they buy tmobile. so since they wont buy tmobile till next march. i dont see them cutting off 4g/3g internet for tmobile using phones till maybe October of 2012 at the least, probably even longer than that

Merger isn't going to happen for at least another year, and they won't start shutting off Tmos 4G until they run out of spectrum... Which means it'll probably be a year or two AFTER the merger is complete that they might need to start turning off 4G.
Somewhat curious if they shut off 4G if there's any consumer protection or fine print that would enable a customer to get out of contract early...
Also, we don't *all* have a problem. It's only you and the other tmous users that might have a problem. Personally, I can't imagine a big company like that doing something that stupid, they'd be breaching contracts and putting clients to a disadvantage en masse. The ensuing ****storm would probably bring them down.

That would be great but I read the specs on PhoneArena.com and it did not have 1900 MHz for the T Mobile version. I guess we will find out soon. If it has 1900 MHz would be great and would also mean that you can use this phone on T Mobile or AT&T and have 3G and 4G which would be a first. Anyway if Phone Arena specs are correct, nobody should by this phone in till we know if the merger goes trough.
there are a lot of people (consumer & government) that are seriously looking at this merger & saying it's bad. I'm really thinking & hoping that it's not going to go through.

Have Unlocked T-Mobile Sensation - using AT&T

Went into T-Mobile yesterday and purchased a Sensation off contract. Got home and went online to get it unlocked.
Currently the phone is on AT&T and I can report that 3G / 4G service does NOT work. I know there was some talk about the phone maybe picking up the 1900 3G band - but I can confirm that is does not. It only works on the 2G / Edge network.
MMS / SMS work fine.
One MAJOR draw back to having this phone on AT&T is you cannot be talking on the phone and use data at the same time. This caught me by surprise when I was using the Google Navigation app and got a phone call. The map stopped updating until I got off the phone. I double checked trying to open a website while on the phone and it gives you an error message saying it needs a connection.
If anyone does plan to do this - know that you also have to manually put in the AT&T APN settings for internet and messaging to work. Just typing in the unlock code will allow you to place calls, but no other services work.
Another annoying part is there is a T-Mobile app that updates all your contacts with their servers. This is constantly trying to update throughout the day. The program isn't able to be un-installed at this point either.
I called AT&T to give them the IMEI number. They (obviously) don't recognize the phone and register it as a non-smart phone. At first when she said that, and also told me my unlimited data package would go from $30 to $15 I was happy. As soon as I got off the phone with her and reset the phone, the internet wouldn't come back up. Had to go in to an AT&T store to get it all fixed. They had to put the IMEI of my old Inspire 4G back on the account to get everything working again. So - don't call AT&T with the IMEI =)
So - would I do all this again and spend $600 bucks. No way - its not worth it. The phone itself is nice, but I feel like I just got tossed back in time about 15 years with this incredibly slow internet and not being able to "talk & surf" at the same time. I've put the phone for sale online
Take it for what its worth
Having only Edge connection speeds just kills the entire experience on any phone regardless of how hardware/software advanced it is. Don't you guys have the Inspire? With all due respect, why would you think the Sensation would even work to it's full potential on an entirely different 3G network? Just wondering why you would set yourself up for such an expensive let down? Again no disrespect, just wondering.
It's still within 14 days . Just return it and get your loot back dude. Thanks for experimenting and posting your results for the community. You've done your part please go return it!
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
There was talk that even though the phone didn't have the 850 band - it may still work on the 1900 band. No one knew for certain (at least in the posts I have read). I read online about other makes of phones that were able to get 3G on just the 1900 band - but the Sensation doesn't seem to.
It's not a huge let down - and the money isn't wasted. I have 14 days to return it, granted with a $50 fee. So it was worth (to me) a $50 experiment to perhaps get a better phone than the Inspire - not to mention its quite a bit smaller which is a huge bonus for me!
Wy did you ever do this? The sensation with at&t 3g will be released on July 5th thru Bell in Canada and already many major import sites are taking pre-orders. It's also confirmed that the bell version will be bloat free and have pure HTC ROM on it.
It's just money man! With a return policy and able to pick it up 2 blocks from my house it was worth the gamble! If it worked on the 1900 band, I was golden. If it didn't, I'd return it or sell it on craigslist.
I imagine the Bell version is going to sell for ~$150-200 higher online because it has the 850 band - supply and demand on that phone will be quite high as compared to the T-Mobile version. I'll most def. keep my eye out. Do you have the name of the website that is doing pre-orders on the Bell Canada version? Not finding anything online.

I hear ya... Worth it to try if you can get a full refund. This is the site I pre-ordered from. The price is high but will be worth it. AT&T service is WAY better in my area. I only get edge on T-Mobile @ my house or I would consider jumping ship.

You could have gotten an SGS2 for about $150 more and had 4G speeds (21MB) on AT&T and used the same dumb-phone data plan. There's a guy with an SGS2 on T-Mobile U.S. in the SGS2 forum getting EDGE too. What's the point of a high-end phone that's dependent on data on a low-end network?
WOW!! $899.99 for the phone. That is A LOT man!! I could keep the Sensation I have and use it on 2G only - and have 450 bucks in my pocket. I have an Inspire sitting here next to the Sensation. Inspire is on "4G" and the Sensation on "2G". In real life tests - it takes about 1.5 seconds longer to open a website such as CNN.
The more I use the Sensation - the more I like it. Its quick - the screen is fantastic - and I'm learning to enjoy having 2G because my battery is lasting quite a bit longer than the power hogging 4G service.
This may not be a bad thing after all....

Correct me if I am wrong - but isn't the GSM bands the exact same on both phones? The only difference is the UMTS spectrum which is for 3G / 4G data. I was under the impression that the voice services of the phone (ie: making phone calls) is always done via GSM.
Edge at your house via T-mobile - don't you have a wireless router the phone would connect to anyway?
(I'm starting to feel like a sales person for the T-Mobile version now - this is scary)
You do realize that it may still work on the 1900 band, but your area is in 850 towers right?

I'll def. be on the lookout for the 1900 band to see about 3g connectivity. I live in Phoenix, AZ.
Ended up getting rid of the phone and waiting for the Canadian version with 850/1900
Too much money to spend on the phone with such limited capabilities. Could never get it to connect to 1900 MHz 3G from anywhere in Phoenix all the way to Tucson.
Wow is it really worth it to cough up 900 for a sensation? That is alot. I always looked to import a NAM version of smartphone to utilize my media net plan. I will have to just wait it out for a Nexus 3 maybe. I love tech but paying 900 for a phone is little out there for me.

Can anyone tell me the apn settings for att mms? I updated with what I found in Google, but mms still doesn't woek.
I, for one, really appreciate taking one for the team. I was also curious as if it would work on AT&T's 1900 MHz band. We already know the 850 MHz wasn't listed.
Just an FYI, the only phone that works on 1900 MHz (as well as AWS) is the Vibrant (I have it now). If you're wondering if your area has 1900MHz coverage by AT&T, you can always use the Vibrant as your benchmark. I keep a Vibrant around just for this reason. I love having a phone that works with both AT&T and T-mobile 3G.
For those criticizing why not wait for an AT&T version: because some of us are interested in phones that can work on both GSM carriers here in the US.
Vibrant is confirmed, not sure about Galaxy S 4G (or really a Vibrant 4G). Of course there's the Nokia N8, but it's not an Android phone.
Some of us were excited to see if the T-Mobile HTC Sensation 4G will join the ranks.
Just so you know, the restocking fee does not apply to cancellations, only phone swaps, unless its defective, then its fee also.

To hell with it, this is very good news for us.
One, not development. Two, I believe that's what the SIM card in our phones is for
I had thoughts it might, once I started tearing through the framework there are hints of HSPA+ all over the place.
Couldn't figure out why they would be there unless our phone supported it. Good to see it does!

The SIM card is primarily for LTE, it's kind of surprising that they actually bothered to put in the HSPA+ to be honest since it's not primarily intended to be used on GSM. I would have thought that they would have skimped on the GSM radios since not many people will use them but I guess because of the way the MSM8960 SoC works it was easy to build in all the antennas needed to support it. Pretty exciting to see that our phone supports practically every cell phone standard then.
Also, it's kind of awkward the way they split up the forums but I guess since there is no Verizon SGS3 general maybe he thought it could fit here. Also he was posting in the other thread about GSM usage in this board which also contains no development so I guess he thought it was okay.
I thought Verizon was releasing an update later on that was supposed to make the S3 a "global" device. Is your phone using the newer baseband/modems? I know a lot of people have been wonder what the update included in that regards (most knew that it contained the crippled search). I wonder if this is the update Verizon mentioned when the phone was announced.
Speaking with our business's Verizon rep about 6 months ago he said that Verizon's plan was to use dual HSPA and LTE in the phones. One service would be strictly for voice, while the other for data. This of course would allow them to do surf while talk.

I would recommend a new Verizon rep. Eventually voice will be over LTE but currently is not. Verizon has no HSPA+ so his logic is flawed. Also, all Verizon LTE phones support talk and surf while on LTE and some support on 3G like the thunderbolt.

Our galaxy s3 also support same time voice/data on 3g.
GSM as a standard supports voice/data simultaneously unless only the legacy GSM (not even EDGE) signal is available. As long as more than one protocol is accessible, you can do voice & data.

No, probably not without some kind of hack.
Verizon's "global" phones have always been locked at the modem-level to refuse connections with AT&T and T-Mobile's US bands, to prevent this.
TeamBlackHat came up with a hack for my old phone, the Droid 2 Global, that did allow it to connect to AT&T/T-Mobile in the US, though- but Verizon will never allow this.
Edit: I am curious about the other thread going where someone got it to connect to AT&T's towers (only voice) though.
This is interesting.
I thought we'd only get EDGE data abroad.

I wanna say that you cant browse and talk while on 3g but it works fine while on 4g. So if anything I think that commercial was more so directed towards the Verizon model of the iphone and the iphone commercial you were seeing was from AT&T. This is my guess anyways.
