is it really worth it? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Hi all,
Ive just got myself a tmobile wizard. ive been looking all through the wm6 pages and was just wondering is it worth me updating my wm5 to wm6. im sure all the new users would like to know this (is there speed improvements etc) and is there a rom that is stable and 99% working? as ive had alot of problems in the past when updating my blueangel to wm5
apologies if these are stupid questions

IMO, there's not enough extra in WM6 to justify the little problems it has. I'd suggest a stable WM5 like Farias 3.3

farias 3.3 is awsome , all of the wm6 roms have issues but i am using the clean wm6 from faria thats in the rom kitchen and it seems just as stable as the wm5 3.3

I would 2nd that!!! Now that we have the Ir button working 100%, i dont think there is other problems

So far so good here....
I know it's kinda aging now but I have been running NotTooSmart's Vanilla Rom for a while now and I have no issues whatsoever. I use my device constantly all day every day and though there was some trick to getting it to work just how I wanted I was comfortable enough to put the same ROM on my wife's Wizard as well (If you only knew how big of a step this was.... god forbid something goes wrong there I will never hear the end of it) .
Overall, here is the list of things that I do with rom if you are contemplating using it yourself and want to know if it will work for you.
Exchange activesync (heavy use)
Pocket IE
AIM 2.0 for PPC (osed once or twice)
Watching movies with TCPMP
( SEE TCPMP NOTES BELOW )
I use WMP as my only MP3 player with a couple of SD cards
WIFI works fine
Bluetooth headset with my HT850 works fine
Phone works okay. I mean, nothing is perfect and I do miss a call on occasion but so far it's acceptable. I have found, despite my previous posts, that 2.19 UK actually is more reliable. 2.25 US is better for data in my area but 2.19 UK causes me to miss a lot less calls.
I use internet radio via TCPMP at the gym every day reliably.
Sirius Sat Radio via SiriusWM5 works great although on occasion I do get the odd program error - NOTE: happens in WM5 too.
I DO NOT OVERCLOCK AT ALL as I really have no need for it.
Ewallet latest release works great
Listpro works great
I use a whole bunch of networking apps (tracert, pocket ping, etc...) from way back in the WM2003 days that still work just fine on WM6.
Terminal services works (though most people will not use this).
TCPMP NOTE: In order to do internet radio and most video you will need to DL and install the WMV9 codecs. This is a known issue and can be found by searching through back posts here in the WM6 forum.
Overall, I say yeah, it's worth it. It's more of an evolutionary upgrade than anything but it's a "nice to have". Plus, HTML email is real nice if you have EXCH 2007.

ok thanks all for the help!
i think i will give it a go, can anyone give me a direct link to the faria 3.3 rom (i cant seem to find it)
also is there anything i must be careful of when updating the rom so i dont brick it!

Make sure you have either G3 or G4 device as downloading the wrong version will brick your device.

If you are wanting to give WM6 a go, then the Faria 3.3 rom is not the correct one. That is a WM5 rom.
The Faria Clean / Vanilla is the WM6 one. You have to download the entire ROM Kitchen, but there is a flash rom directory that has a default rom already built (or you can go through the build process to add and remove the stuff you want / don't want.
The link for the Faria WM6 is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=303406 (same as given above, but that is NOT the AKU 3.3 Faria ROM)
If you really want Faria AKU 3.3 (again, its a stable WM5 ROM) then its here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291806
And then use this link to step you through flashing...

it seems better than any wm6 i have tried , it does not have battery status installed and i have not installed it yet so without that and no overclocking its holding up as good as it did with farias wm5 3.3.

sometimes you can get around the 90 minute wait by just putting http://anonym.to/? infront of the URL. Doesn't always work but its worth a try.

Is it worth it?
I know I'm coming in late to the thread, but I think in general I would be a bit more cautious. The leap from a stock rom to a (necessarily) custom WM6 rom, and then to a rom kitchen is better taken in baby steps in my opinion. In my own view, objectively I don't see any difference in my day to day usage of my wizard from when I was running WM5. In fact, I think because I've become obsessed with tinkering with it, I spend more time trying out different odds and ends, tweaking and breaking and fixing things than I do using it!
If you are primarily interested in USING you Wizard, I would start with a small step to say the Faria 3.3 WM5 rom. Learn to unlock, and flash, load your programs again, etc. Then once that's digested move up to WM6 if you really feel the itch, then try a rom kitchen as a final step.
Whatever you do, Keep it Fun!

Very good points, but unfortunately, Faria did not release his "Vanilla" as a seperate ROM but instead with the entire kitchen (which I agree could be dangerous for someone new). My point was you can use that Vanilla rom by downloading the entire kitchen, but just going to the falshrom directory and flashing what came with it as the default (I understand its basically what we were running in beta which is a very nice ROM). It is a very good WM6 rom with no "cooking" required.
I've thought about making a couple of these Faria Vanilla's up and posting them (with Faria's permission) for those that only want the rom and not the entire kitchen (or the temptation that comes with it).

i used to tinker my blueangel so much, but the wm5 roms just didnt work right. with this rom from the kitchen is it just a 'stock' one? will it just have the programs my tmobile rom has? as im happy with my tmobile rom but i just want to have wm6. i dont need all the tweaking tools as long as it works

No, its a "Vanilla" or "Clean" rom (ie: pretty much stripped down to the core). So you then add back to it just what you want.
If you want a full featured WM6, then look at Faria's "the real thing" but there are issues with that one so you have to dig through the huge thread for fixes (so I don't recommend it). If you want something that feels like a "stock" rom, then do the Faria AKU 3.3 (again, its WM5, but its better than the stock ones IMO).
I like the Vanilla roms though as you just put on it what you want. But not everyone likes that.

ive unlocked and my pda is ready for wm6. what file do i run from the kitchen folder to start the update?

I think that's a great idea. Even if you put in all his currently available options, it is still more of a vanilla rom. Maybe with and without Voice Command, as that seems to be a make or break issue for folks. But serve it up the way you like it!

Hi,
There are 3 WM6 ROMs for the Universal floating around here, namely:
1st: Helmi's ROM version 1.1 (the ORIGINAL ROM where all the others originated). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291875
2nd: JWright's ROM version 2.01.08 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=293902
3rd: PDAViet's ROM version 2.00.07 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294097
To be honest ALL are very good and highly stable. To save you all the reading, just try each one and soft reset immediately without installing any application. WHY? Because after a soft reset, you will most likely experience FREEZING that can only be cured by 3-4 soft resets. Each ROM had different results on the Universal. Others claim HELMI's ROM is the best and does not have the FREEZING effect after a soft reset, while others claim JWright's, and some PDAViet's ROM. If you are going to read ALL 3 threads, they all say that they experienced FREEZING after a soft reset. But, it is up to the user to pick which one is the most stable. So, to get you going, just try them one by one and soft reset, whoever does not FREEZE after the first soft reset, STICK TO THAT ROM, for most likely that is the most stable for your UNIVERSAL.
a very very good reply. i haven't tried any other roms other than jwrights .08
rom.
it's good, fast... people are saying less battery with wm6, but i wasn't on wm5 long enough to test that. i hated wm5.
i know jwright has two really good apps. usb hdd, if you copy a lot of song or anime off and on the mobile, usbhdd makes the universal look like flashdrive to your computer.
also there's task manager which closes programs when you press x instead of minimizing them.
when i soft reset i have 26 megs free program memory.
Big Thanks
thanks a lot thts made it so much easier... and again thanks 4 ur time, its people like u tht make ths place so good.. STAR
try 2.01.08 PV You'll be happy with this
I am using JWright's ROM and seems very stable. I love the flash drive program. the only bugs I have encountered are 1. the freezing after reset (every rom has this I am sure) 2. now and than I loose connection to mt bt headset and have to turn on/off to re connect. The rom is very quick and so far I have no reason to switch. Good luck and keep us posted on the rom you chose and why.
DarkForce ROM is the BEST for me!

My advice! don't use any. stick with your service provider ROM. This is my experience, YMMV. Unless of course you like to play with it and not use your phone seriously.
That's what I do but i always go back to my ISP ROM. It is stable, no hangs, no freezing and maximum amount of RAM. No useless third party aplictions, and everything just works as you would expect.
It is OK to use these ROMS for experimentation. any missing features, can be easily puchased or downloaded for free; such as html in emails (qmail), PIE a little better in ROM 6 but not much. The usb stuff is useful too but you can do the same with activesync (i.e. transfer files etc..).
that's my 2 cents...

Do you have WINDOWS mobile 6 rom? (not talking WIZARD. I'm talking OFFICIAL WM6 ROM)

Do you know where can I find a REAL version of the OFFICIAL Windows Mobile 6 ROM? Do you have it? do you know a link?
There probably wont be anyone who will claim this. No one has it officially. Plus if anyone does they will not speak up. You might as well try getting milk from a bull.
Thanks for your prompt response... It means that all WM6 (Wizard Mobile 6) roms are a Windows Mobile 5 customization, or aren't they?
So, what's the big deal on changing from your original rom to an unknown version when you can install all apps included in these roms without risk?
At least, in your opinion, which is the best, most stable, faster and tools-rich rom out there for an HTC Wizard G4 ? Faria? X-Plore? Love? mUn? other?
I'm asking this because I tested almost all roms here, and cannot say that there is a real difference (except for the make-up details) from one to another... Maybe as an expert you can help me to take the right decision on what's the best Rom to flash...
do you want and excelent ROM??

Try out Xplore v1.1 ROM you will love it. If you dont find it usefull or dont notice any difference at all. Go back to your WM5 ROM.
Look at my signiture!
BTW: O2 Germany will bring a HTC P4350 with WM6 in 2 weeks.
In all honesty, they are diffrent, just not a M$ release. They are not WM5 OS files. Now as for the best, it depends on what you like. Some like my Vanilla, slot of people like Xplore. It all really depends on what you are going to use it for.

I'm very proud to talk with a ROM creator (seriously). So tell me more about your vanilla ROM... I tested the latest (I think) version of this rom. It was really nice but it doesn't have some tools/programs than others have.
I'm looking for a fast ROM that contains useful teaks and tools to manage the phone as easier as possible.
I use my phone as a mobile office (MMS and SMS are critical to me, good reception at call time, Word, Excel and PDF viewer are critical too, connect to WiFi networks, ActiveSync) and sometimes (specially in airports while waiting for a flight) as a fun center.
Rarely I browse the Internet or use my phone as MP3 player or movie player.
Sounds like I can use the WM5 that came with my phone but I found it SOOooo slow for every task I do.
based on these expectations, what do you think is the best rom for me?
LOL. This is the reason i Started cooking.
Mine does not have all those apps, you are correct. But thats why its a Vanilla version. It gives a (somewhat) stable building ground for ROM Cookers to get a close to clean version without all the tearing and ripping out others includes.
Reffering 2 Xplore v1.1 ROM
Okay, whats up with the WIFI(won't turn on)? doesn't work on my Cingular 8125 plus the MMS too, can't receive o send. Apart from that its okay(doesn't have memory issue like other Roms)...but i had to go back to Most beautiful coz of the WIFI & MMS.... anyone got a solution?

If you want an official WM6 ROM you can get those from the Official Windows Mobile 6 SDK . You can get them here.
But I don't know if these ROMs can be adapted to an real PDA...
That's a Nice and interesting question, my friend...
Anybody knows if it is possible to rip the rom from a virtual PDA and load it into a real PDA?

Best WM6 ROM

Right now i have Faria's "the real thing", is there a better ROM out there right now, like his new kitchen ROM? I am still new to the whole flashing thing and "the real thing" was my first time flashing a ROM and all, so i prefer to not switch unless its a really good change. Plus the kitchen ROM seems kinda confusing to do. So are there any suggestions about a better ROM for my SIM and CID unlocked G3 T-Mobile US Wizard?
PS: sorry its not a poll, to lazy to do it
xplore 2.0
Isn't that still a beta, so wouldnt it have a lot of problems? I also would like to know if by changing WM6 ROM would i have to reinstall of my software and stuff?
Hold on! How could you have flashed before and not know the answer to that question yourself? Yes, it will wipe all your data and flash your phone to whatever the cooker made it to be.
Make sure you know what you're doing, do a little more reading first.
I knew it would delete it, but i thought that might just be WM5 to WM6 and if you just change WM6 to WM6 it wouldnt do it, but thanks for confirmation. Do u have a reccomendation for another ROM or should i just stick with "the real thing"?
Hey I just switched from farias real rom to xplore 1.1 and I have to say, I am been very pleased with the switch, and even more excited about xplore 2.0.
If you really don't want to flash your phone too many times in the future, I would hold out for xplore 2.0 to come out (hopefully should be out by the end of the week) and flash that.
For keeping your software and information, of course you can use activesync to get some of your programs back up, farias rom I believe came with PIM Backup (if not get it), which allows you to restore your text messages and call logs and such.
One thing to note... Xplore is alot clean rom than farias. By that I mean there isn't alot of extra stuff installed on it from start. 2.0 will definitely be designed that way as well (super clean). So take note of farias real rom post and programs you use a bit on it, because your probably want to go search for the cab files after you flash.

But there are only 2 liitle bugs to be solved and then it is readdy. Because Xplore1.1 was even good.

Won´t take long. Just read the end of the Xplore 2.0 thread. There are only two more bugs.
What does it mean for a ROM to be "clean"? and what are the advantages of it being "clean"? Also is it the same thing as a ROM being Vanilla? Im still kinda new to the whole Flashing ROMs and stuff.

Clean means - nothing included. No apps, no customizings, no tweaks.
YOu can add all by your own. but if you would like to start a little eaysier.

nevermind )
Clean typically means that it is stripped down of added programs and unnecessary items. A lot of the rom cookers are trying to come up with clean (also labeled vanilla) roms so that people can start cooking their own roms with a really good base to start off. I haven't tried farias rom that is included with the kitchen yet... but if its made by faria, its going to be good.
One thing to note about roms, is there isn't necessarily one thats better than another. Every rom is made for a purpose and to the cookers liking. One might be blazing fast with a crap load of free ram, while another one might be set up with alot of tweaks and programs that are more to your liking. With the kitchens that have been created, and the good amount of base roms coming out, we should see a lot of custom roms in the next couple of months.
My best suggestion, look at whats in the roms. Most roms have their own thread that lists what programs are included, and a lot times unique aspects of their rom.

Clean and Vanilla basically mean the same thing. It means they are "plain". Nothing added to them, so they don't have all sorts of extra programs built into them or anything. The idea is to give you more memory and storage space, and hopefully make it run faster. Then you can add programs you want to it.
I've used XPlore 1.1 and now Faria Vanilla (both Beta version and now one I "cooked" with the ROM Kitchen but not adding anything to it yet beyond what was in the choices of the default kitchen options). Both ROMs are very fast and I honestly can't say I prefer one over the other. I'm sticking with the Faria one now though as (for some reason) to me it just feels solid (but I can't tell you why XPlore 1.1 didnt' feel that way to me). There are LOTS of people that swear by the XPlore roms and 2.0 looks to be very nice. But for now I'll stay with the Faria one (and may look at cooking up some of the things I use into the rom directly with the included kitchen so I have my own version of it that fits me).
If you want to try the Faria Vanilla, you have to download the entire kitchen, and then under the devwiz directory, there is a flashrom directory. You can run the Updater in there, and you will have the basic Faria Vanilla (clean) WM6 without messing with the kitchen itself.
Otherwise install XPlore 1.1 (or wait for 2.0)... You'll be happy either way (i'm guessing).
BTW: Don't forget there is also NotTooSmart's WM6 which is good, NoBigDeal (NBD) which gets good reviews, and WM6 Business Edition (also getting good reviews). Read the first post of each of the threads to see what is in the rom (or missing from it) and decide what fits you best. They all basically are the same beyond that (without getting technical).
The X-Plore 2.0 Rom is scheduled for a hopeful release date of next week.
In the name of our lord(s) let us pray...
Lol j/k
Anyway I have to agree with some of the posters above I absolutrly love 1.1. And I have to agree it is by far the best rom ever created. That just me. It varies depending on your tastes. Like I prefer a nice clean rom that already has the tweaks installed so I don't have to. That kkinda thing. Some people like their roms preloaded with a stuffload of apps. Ya know.

Not to go off topic and not to start a "this rom is better than that rom" war, but I'm just curious about a statement like this (yes I know its an over exageration but still)... If you are going to claim that something is "the best rom ever created" can you also state what roms that have been created that you have tested before making this statement? I try to be clear when I post that I've tried this rom or that rom before I state this is my favorite, or fits my needs, or whatever by giving examples of other roms I've tried. But without knowing what roms you have tried before you claim something is "the best" I have no basis to know what you think its better than (other than it just works and you don't plan on switching to another rom now).
Again, this isn't an attempt to bait a rom war, but I like to be able to know what people have tried in the past and what they now really like based on their past history of other roms (I've seen some people that in one post say they just flashed from WM5 to a custom rom, then in another post claim that rom is better than any other rom out there. I like seeing people excited about great roms, but lets keep it in perspective to what they have tried before the one they now claim is the greatest).
Also, as aestivalisakito even points out, what one person wants is not what someone else may want, so its all personal opinion based on that person's needs (which also usually isn't known).
While I am going to ignore the fact that your messenge seems to be dripping with sarcasm however I could be wrong. Believe it or nolt I have tested Most of farias roms, and also some of the older ones. I have successfully flashed my wizard over 22 times with 9 different roms.
Now that having been said I DID state ''thats just me'' because that's what it is. I also stated that it all depends on your taste of roms and that you have to try multiple. I will state this again:
Code:
And I have to agree it is by far the best rom ever created. That just me. It varies depending on your tastes. Like I prefer a nice clean rom that already has the tweaks installed so I don't have to. That kkinda thing. Some people like their roms preloaded with a stuffload of apps.

installing apps vs cooking
hey guys, maybe someone can enlighten me.I think i've read somewhere that cooking ur own rom (in terms of adding ur own apps) causes a lesser RAM consumption than installing the apps.
What i'm trying to ask is..if I have a vanilla ROM,is it true that by cooking that ROM and adding the apps that i want,i'll end up with a rom that will consume less RAM in comparison to -> a vanilla ROM and installing all those apps (instead of cooking)?...
I've read someone say it is so but if it's true, how much of a difference really? thanks!

Best Rom For HTC Wizard?

I know many of you may think this is based on opinion, but personally I'm new at the scene and just tried Faria's WWE WM6 ROM (the real thing) featured at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297762 .
My original reason for installing was cause my 8125's OS started lagging lately for some reason (it would take a few seconds for menus and items to show up instead of being instant). In addition, battery life was HORRIBLE (would die in around 2 days). So I went and downloaded Faria's WWE WM6 ROM (the real thing). Installation was easy, the ROM worked great, my battery life greatly improved (even though I overclocked to 247 with cpuscaling at 143).
Unfortunately, I messed around too much and accidentally killed my phone application , not to mention the OS has started to lag (probably because I installed too many things?).
Either way, I'm looking to download a new ROM. I want something that has all the features of Faria's HTC Wizard Rom (the real thing), and more. I don't care too much about extra space, because frankly I don't need it. I just want something that's fast and feature-packed (and includes everything from Faria's ROM). Any tips or suggestions? Help would really be appreciated, as I've just gone through 3 ROMS that I didn't like. Thanks.
try explore rom it prob more of the lines your looking for
Try this one.

I have tried many different ROM's, I keep going back to this one. It's the most stable for me.
Core 2.0n
For me, the best WM6 rom is the Core 2.0n (based on XPlore 1.0)
Thephone is very fast (boot in 35 seconds), no bugs, working well with TomTom6.
I'm only waiting a full French WM6 rom
for months of WM6.0 use; Faria is the best for stable.
im testing Pandora 1.05 right now.
From all of the ROMs that I have used. I think Faria is the best one. it's very stable.
pfff i think its best for me:
base version of Pandora:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=307080
and core 2.0 of coz.
Faria's overloaded imo.
i like reloaded
Faria The Real Thing is most stable for me
soft reset everyday, to remove the slow down due to any memory leaks
and I'm gonna buck the trend here, wm6 is SLOW. use a 2.26 if you want a quick one
two day battery life sounds good some people think one day is good others, several days (but it depends how much you use it).

I am completely of agreement with you.
From all of the ROMs that I have used. I think Faria "The Real Thing" is the best one. And Xplore 1.1, too.
pdaviet rom
pdaviet by phamquang for me
5.2.1413 fast
Hi,
i have been using Xplore 2.0n and it is great.
Its near Full Vanilla, but it supports AD2P and most of the basics.
The new 5.2.1413 build is FAAASSTTT, and there are FULL VANILLA releases, nevertheless, i was unable to set AD2P.
If there is a fix for ad2p, i will surely switch to 5.2.1413 because it is way way faster than Xplore 2.0n

I agree. i have been on this fourum reading for a while now. I recently desided to become a member.
For the prize core 2 definatly gets my vote. it has been the most stable. doesn't require soft or hard resets.
i belive by far the best yet....
I know you chefs are always on the grind trying to make better.
Appreciated :}
I have a quick question...
Which one is newer/better?
Faria's WWE WM6 Rom ?
Or Faria's HTC Wizard Final ROM with Pro Kitchen?

The ROM Kitchen is the newer version of Faria's rom, and its vanilla, but you can add stuff into it. My Crossbow Reloaded (link below) is a cooked version of this rom with stuff added to it and a few fixes I put into it.

Thinking of rolling back to WM5

Hey,
When I bought my Universal from ebay it already came with WM6 (a very buggy version, not sure from where). So I never really had the chance to test WM5.
I'm mostly having problems installing Hebrew support on the cooked roms. For instance PDAC (one of the companies who make hebrew for PPC) told me that because their software detects my device as WM5 their licensing system won't allow me to install (by the way, is there a work around this problem? This is all legit of course I want to buy this software).
I'm not going to ask what are the official differences because I can find more than enough about it on the web, but is there really a technical reason to stay with a cooked WM6 (being somewhat buggy)? Besides being prettier are the cooked roms giving any advantage over WM5 ? From my understanding both operating systems are pretty much the same besides the included software.
Thanks
[edit]
By the way I want to emphasize that I REALLY TRULY appreciate the effort spent into making these cooked roms. SERIOUSLY. This isn't a complaint thread!

Yeah im think about downgrading but to be honest just flash with a good WM6 rom and then wait a bit and more software will come out its still a new OS and i like being like the elite few lol with WM6 thanks to XDA Developers!

Perhaps I will downgrade temporarily. My main concern is Hebrew support. Besides that everything else works just fine.
I would like to roll back to WM5 as well and tried Jwright's and Helmi's one. Both of them gave me surprising stable and reasonable fast experience. But one thing keeps me coming back to WM6 is the WAY MORE intelligence way of dialing a phone.
I am now still looking for a WM5 rom which is as stable as those I had quoted and WITH the Smartdialing function.
Any ideas? please share.
Thanks

What's the smart-dialing function? I never had WM5 so I don't know the difference in dialing.
I just gave up on this idea after seeing how horrible WM5 is :/
And I actually managed to install Hebrew support! Yay!

WM5 horrible? wtf?
I you dont use video call, and you don't mind the bugs of WM6 with WiFi and MMS. Then stick with WM6. Otherwise.. use WM5.

From the things I saw in the official O2 installation I made:
- Sim contacts don't appear as regular contacts
- Outlook looks like the horrible outlook I had in my old PocketPC2002
- The phone dialer is not responsive and very buggy
- Overall slower than WM6
I'm personally not having any problems with WiFi in WM6.
And yeah I don't use video call or MMS I don't use any G3 features.
Oh.. you used the official WM5 from O2. I wouldn't use that myself.. too darn slow and lots of missing features. I'm using Jwright's ROM... anyway, it's just personal preference. I'd rather have all the features that my Universal can offer with WM5 rather than have a better looking WM6 ROM with buggy and missing features.
Highly Recommend To Try Kamal's WM5 ROM (AKU 3.5)
I recommend to try Kamal's WM5 ROM. You guys won't regret it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319838
