lately my phone has been whacky.
it's been so bad that everytime i push the on button i wonder if i'll see anything.
for about a month now my phone has been 'broken". It keeps going back to it's initial mind state i.e . nothing in the memory whereby i must constantly sync it anew, which made a bit easier by the fact that i syn with both my pc's at home and work.
so one can imagine how frustrated it must me to wonder everytime one turn on the ppc if one's contacts are still there. or if the note i just scribbled down will still be there (in case i didn't save it to external memory) when i turn it back on.
is there a remedy for that?
thanks
By explaining what phone you have the more likely you will get an answer.
If it's windows mobile 2003 or earlier, could be a faulty battery,
Windows mobile 2005 or newer - time to send it for repair really
WM2k3 used ram as storage, which had a low powered backup battery, if the device had a totally flat battery for over 20 mins, it wasn't unusual to lose all user data. WM5 changed this and used 'persistant storage' which wasn't prone to losing any info, if your device is one of these later machines and has alzheimers, it's time to get it fixed
my phone is a sx66 running windows 2003

I recently left the PPC world (yet again ) because of annoyances not the least of which was the delays/instability on turning on the device when a program is running from the card...
I'm back (couldn't live without multitasking ) but still very annoyed by this (eg, I turn on the machine and have to wait before doing a search on my medical reference that's already running or else the program will crash...).
There was a time when I tried all the hacks in the book for making storage card startups faster and less finicky, but eventually gave up...
Is there *any* PPC and/or card that does a better job of handling power-up?
My question is why are you turning off the device anyways?
I have a hotkey to turn off the screen, but it will turn off after some minutes...
Something strange happened last night. I have an i-Mate KJAM that is Super CID unlocked. I have flashed numerous (more than 20) ROM's before. Was running on Faria's Crossbow Real Thing ROM and was going to flash X-Plore's. At 89% my XP Computer just shutdown completely (no suspend or anything, just complete shutdown). After having a panic attack. Tried upgrading from the rainbow screen and each time it would do the sudden shutdown; however, at different periods during the flash. I had no programs running and even went into task manager and shut down all of the backround process that I could. After taking a smoke break and cleaning my drawers, was able to load the Cingular official ROM, no problems with my computer at all. Any ideas of what might be causing this? I am afraid to give it a go until I can identify what the cause was on my computer.
Thanks,
Matt
It did happen with me.
I have IBM Thinkpad T41p.
Another symptom was: just before shutdown the processor fan used to speed up.
After talking to the IBM support technician and some unconclusive troubleshooting, I had to send the laptop to them.
Lucky for me, my laptop was under warranty.
They changed the motherboard twice for this problem, after which I did not have the issue.
I am guessing - some USB hub/host controller on the motherboard must have got affected.
Hope this helps.

Mrugendra
Hi guys,
I know its kind a stupid to ask this, but couldnt find anything on net regarding this.
I have prior experience with Windows mobile 2003. When the battery is flat, the phone will be reset to factory default.
I would like to know if the touch cruise with Window Mobile 6 will have the same problem when the phone ran out of battery juice. If it dosent reset, how long can it last with dead battery without the risk of resetting to default settings?
I appreciate all your kind feedbacks and insights on this.
It won't hard reset on you when the battery dies... but how long can it last in this state? Good question... once I had it 8 hours continously turned off and my data was still there...
Does your installed softwares still there after the 8 hours?
Although with Wm2003SE and earlier, a pocketPC will loose all memory contents (RAM powered by the main battery), since WM2005, Flash memory is used and the device will no more hard reset even if it has been on low battery for few days or months (unless main memory corruption, by unstable programs).
Yesterday, my Polaris with original HTC WM 6.1 set back itself to the delivery state. When I where at work, I wondered, because the battery was suddenly empty. I have charged it on Sunday.
After I have begun to recharge it for a short time, I switched it on. The Polaris told me to calibrate the touchscreen. After it, It started with the assistant for first steps of WM. I canceled it and then I where on the Home Screen. The HTC Home and the Plugin for G-Alarm where lost. When I tried to start a program I have installed some time before, it hadn’t worked. All programs I had installed for my self, seemed to be lost. When I tried to start them, there comes the failure like comes when I’ll install them (the program is from an unknown developer…; I don’t know the text in English exactly, because it is in German on my Polaris) All the SMS where lost and the Plugins on the Program Tab of the HTC Home and the Phone numbers in the Cube where also lost.
All seemed that the Polaris is in delivery state, but the installed programs where still in the list of programs in settings of WM.
The last way for me was to install the ROM now onto the phone. After I’ve installed it new today, WM 6.1 again, all worked very well and I’ve installed some programs like finger menu etc. new. After one restart while an installation, the problem comes again. The whole Phone seemed to be in delivery state. The only change is now, that the phone-program of the Polaris in WM doesn’t work anymore. When I click onto the telephone receiver- picture in WM, nothing happened. Earlier the screen comes, where I have to input my pin-number.
Have anybody an idea, why the mistake happened and what I can do to repair it? Is it a soft- or hardware mistake? I have no Idea what I could do to repair it. The last way I could do is to send it to the dealer where I’ve bought it, because I’m still in guarantee-time, or has anybody an idea, how I can repair the software without send it back for repair?
Regards from Germany,
Robert
Robert,
Get that phone right back to the SUpplier, as its clearly hardware issue. You have tried to re-flash with original 6.1 which was succesful.
btw just curious, did you try using the phone standard without adding new apps for a few days just to see if it was stable or not?
Might be a good idea to do this, just so u can be sure its not a software clash.
Thanks for your fast answer, timmymarsh!!
I've only tried the phone a few minutes without any apps. Then I installed only 4 or 5 small apps, which I've used before I had the first problems on monday over a long time.
This day I watched onto the invoice of the phone. I bought it last year at the end of April. So I will send it as fast as possible to the supplier, that I won't loose my garantee.
After your post I'm pretty sure, that it should be a hardware issue.
If I had a longer rest of the garantee time, I would try it without apps some days, but in this case I'll play safe...
have just had exactly the same problem only have been using the udk syrius r7 rom for last few months, turned phone off while in work and on turning back on losing all contacts etc. have tried reflashing with r8 beta & had same problem have now flashed 3lit3-VI rom and seems 2 b ok now.

the indications given looks like due to the battery was drained, so you will lose all applications been installed as well as data and information on the ram (sdcard will survive). in worst cases, your device will stay on bootloader mode, will not loading the rom, though hard reset when battery full can resolve the situation.
Unless you can find hardware related reason to draining your battery higher than normal, no i dont think it is hardware related.
Hi All,
I installed WM6 (with Boom logo) sorry was a long time ago, and cant remember the Official ROM title.
Been working great for ages, but over the past few days its been crashing (freezing, followed a few seconds later by screen fading out with various coloured vertical lines) and the only way to reboot is remove battery and start again.
There does not seem to be any pattern to when it crashes - sometimes minutes, but ran all weekend without a hiccup.
I have tried Axios CloseApps 1.40 to get rid of everything running that i dont need and this hasnt helped (crashed immediately the confirm screen came up once). Also run Reg Cleaner to see if that helps, cured a couple of issues but still crashing. Did have overclock at 240, but turned this back to 192 and still falls over.
No new programs installed recently... hadn't been sync'd in 80 days. Tried syncing aswell....nada
Anyone with any ideas??
Many thanks for any pointers
Nod
Just remembered - TNT Rom
Sorry - brain fade tonight!

Sounds suspiciously like a memory issue. It's possible you've somehow gotten your Extended ROM corrupted, but that's not very likely. The more likely issue is you're simply out of memory from loading too much on your phone, or (and still more likely) you don't clean out your phone periodically as you should.
D/L this and run it on your machine: ClearTemp. This will clear out temporary files, and remove dead links, etc. from your phone that are taking up space and helping nobody.
Hopefully you have DotFred's Task manager. Run it, go to notification manager, and delete all duplicate notifications. (See his feature list for explanation.)
Another suggestion: Use Advanced Configuration Tool to change the default locations of pictures, video, and documents to your SD card. If you're not using an SD card...get one.
If you already do these things, I apologize for preaching to the converted, but these seem like the most likely fixes.
Another slightly more painful solution would be to back up your PIM data and your personal files, and do a Hard Reset. This would strip away all your customizations, and remove all programs you've added, but it would also put your registry back in pristine condition, and scrub your memory of any buggy material.
Hi Myrddin,
Thanks for the advise...
I have used Clear Temp and looked at the TaskMgr, but did not know exactly what I could clear out or not... clearing duplicates and Scripts reduced the notifications down to 83 from 367!
Runs quicker if nothing else
I haven't a great deal of files on it, running a 2GB card which has TomTom on (program runs from card) with Euro and UK maps, and plenty of room for pictures etc which I save on the card anyway. Oxios states that i have 15ish MB free, so didn't think capacity was an issue. Have moved what little I had left over to the card.
Will try a Hard Reset as last resort, but noticed two things today - had a small piece of plastic under the SIM card (which is now removed) - may have been disturbing contacts with SIM.
This got me thinking... it seems more often that not when I put the Wizard into my Car Cradle (handsfree speaker/charger) it crashes. Could this be a battery/power connector issue? (no problems when I connect to PC via USB).
Many thanks
Noddy
PS Dont worry about preaching to the converted - even the converted need help occasionally!!

That sounds bad. Yes, I think it is possible you have a connector issue. I doubt you have a battery/power issue, otherwise. Do you have problems syncing the phone to a computer? If so, that would be the clincher for a connector problem. Otherwise, it may just be a less than stellar cradle connector.
Your SIM card debris issue doesn't sound related to this, but may have been related to your other problems (though I think this is unlikely).
Think it might be slowly dying :-(
Hi Myrddin
I think I have come to the same conclusion unfortunately.
Performed Hard Reset in the end which I thought may have fixed the problems, as no crashes for a few days, but then it happend again. DOH.
There are no problems when I connect via USB, and the Cradle is an official TomTom version and seems in pretty good shape. My wife's Wizard does not have this problem so I'm assuming it's my Phone and not the cradle unfortunately.
I think I am left with three courses of action
- flash an upgraded OS (6.5) to see if that improves stability (however the TNT build's I understand are pretty rock solid anyway)
- or take it apart and see if "anything wobbles" probably screen connector seems most appropriate as when placing in the car unit the only real way of pushing it in is by the front half of the top otherwise the SD card pops out or I hit the power button (my fingers aren't the smallest!)
- or purchase a new phone (I know I will probably get flamed for this, but the Glofiish X800 looks OK for circa £200)
Ho Hum. Thanks for all your help
Nod.
