What phone have I seen? - General Topics

Guys, pull up a chair and put your feet up, I'll tell you a story.
As some of you may know, by day I'm a commercial lawyer based in London, and by night I steal ice creams from little children.
Right now I'm working on a possible anti-competitive practise investigation, and so am working in Brussels for a few weeks. Yesterday I got to the Eurostar station in Brussels, all ready for my plush seated journey home, when I discovered the unhappy news that all trains were cancelled due to a fire in London.
Anyway, that's the context of my story.
While fighting back the tears of anguish at the prospect of spending another night in a 5 star hotel with free porn, I noticed that the smart suited gentleman next to me was using an interesting phone that I didn't recognise.
Now, you could say that I've seen a phone or two in my time, but I didn't recognise this one. And it was a nice phone, ie "trading in the One Ring" for it nice. My Precioussss.
This phone: it was roughly the size of an excalibur, ie large smartphone format. It had a blackberry style keyboard (ie not slide out), was quite thin, and curiously, was smooth chrome/silver on the sides, although the front was mostly black. It had a large screen, although I didn't see the OS, and again, oddly, it had a nipple joystick like the Artemis that lit up white-ish when he touched it, much like my own erogenous zones.
Anyone know what it could have been? Me wants...

Was it the BlackBerry Pearl?
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/device-detail.jsp?navId=H0,C101,P203

sounds more like the blackberry 8800,
on the same site as above

Maybe it was a vertu ?

Yes! It was the Blackberry 8800... Hmm, they did well on the sexiness of the design. I've just received an 8700 from work, and can't say I appreciate the design much, but the 8800 is definitely more Vertu then Casio design-school. Very sexy.
But I think I'll stick with HTCs for now... Blackberry OS =

NEW!!! Pocket PC's Of the future coming soon. . . . .

Hi there everyone!
I went to TOKYO not so long ago (end of July). And GUESS what I saw???
These marketers introduced me to a new Pocket PC.
They call it the FUTARON V27
It's basicly a 812MHz Pocket PC, with a 3 Megapixel CCD video/photo cam. Its got a powerful graphics controller, similar to the one's in the PSP (Playstation Portable) and a strong 3G+GPRS built-in antenna. When they demonstated it to me, they wouldn't let me touch it
They put WM5 on one, and on another they put their own program which lacks similarities to the MW5 but it is, how do you say, more simplied and windows xp looking.
They run, the liberty city stories using a PSP emulator, which also runs other games like Mario and Pokemon. When I asked them about JAVA, they laughed , but yeah it does have it's own JAVA system.
He loaded the game from the pocket pc, itself so it was large file size. He told me it had a total of 5 Gb storage!!!
It's even got its own TV out, like the samsung d600 phone. They plugged it on a projector and showed me Pocket Powerpoint and also played the game via the projection. 8)
I should mention, though it was a bit bigger than my XDAII, the size was basicly the result of the fingerprint reader and all the other commercially available space consuming specialties. Basicly had more specifics than you can point with sticks!! But it was without a doubt, thinner, less rigid and smaller than the PSP.
There was special accessories made for it, like 3 different types of car holders for different holding ways. Optional: loudspeaker, charger, GPS holders. A weird case, but it is very protective, which you can tell by teh fact how the guy dropped and slammed it unto the ground a couple times which nothing happend. An expensive looking stylish cover. A durable plastic cover which you can go diving (i think) since its waterproof and you can press the buttons from the cover's buttons (what about taping the screen??) I guess that was designed for diving photography. A mini device wich you plug into the serial and the tv out and it shows a small (about 20" inch) projective for portable in-class presentations.A work station where its hooked up to speakers, where it can be charged and charge a battery, otherwise the spare battery (u connect) to the station is used, also has the projector, a note holder and couple of buttons which u can configure, i saw him use it like an office telephone with the hold button and all. And many other things which u connect like a powerful LED torch, forgot to mention the camera has it own LED torch and ca be used separately.
The whole pocket poket pc was very artistically designed, very comfortable, light and stylish. You could hold it in a digital camera type way, the PSP game kind of way, the stylus tapping sort of way and ofcourse the mobile type where you hold it on your ear.
When I asked them for a trade for my XDA II, the man nearly died of laughter. No racial offence, but I think these Japanese cannot hold their laughter. I asked for the price, he said it wasn't for sale. That they were merely introducing their devices to the tourists and hoping to get feedback and possibly order. Since I dont trust anyone with my money  I didnt order anything, they basicly get your ID and credit card and contact you when they will release it.
This phone was not a phone, a pocket pc, a digital camera, a gameboy but it was something else. These nerds gathered their brains :?: and the wanted things/ideas  from the public and made it real.
He said there is a slim chance these devices may come out until the end of 2007-mid 2008. I guess their holding off their stuff to profit more from previous products.?..
I've not pictures of this, it was a, as the sign read, "NO CAM TAKING" with guards about. :x
Anyways, I guess these people just rolled our dreams into one good fantasy which we can't have or touch and probably photograph until 3 or so more years.
I am thinking about buying a machine that packages (with an opening mini-parachute) a stored content when it fires. And it does fire, yes it does, so i can be like to the guy:
Why dont you try my SD card? Yoink grab the device
chuck it in the launcher. shoot the device into the air.
The parachute opens, it lands safely out of the secure zone.
My friend grabs it and disappears from TOKYO. And while the guards watch the device open its parachute, I run another direction and also escape. Next week, I'm home using my new whatever device. Lets face the facts, the name of the device is very bad. :?
That's it for my explaining.
812 MHz? How much battery life would that device have?
plenty of battery life, it has a nuclear reactor in the back instead of those outdated Lithion Ion batteries were stuck with....
Thats quite impressive but not surprising for Japan the micro technology capital of the world, I think theres some big innovations in pocket technology on the way from pocket pc phones to UMPCs.
By 2007-2008 only imagination knows what could be coming out by then.
No its not a PPC. Its is a UMPC And they have already been release in America.
I've sold one at my warehouse for $880.
The other system running is Windows XP Media Center Portable Edition.
Samsung and Asus have released them in America
Are you sure you didnt see this thing?
30gig, 1.2gig intel,4.5inch screen, XP, wifi, Plus many more. There are some models that come EDGE/GPRS.
Its only a little bigger then the XDA Exec.
and Im loving it!
Uh, "a little bigger" is the whole issue. Don't get me wrong, I love gadgets but lets face it: a device this size really takes the "pocket" out of "Pocket PC".
Sure, it's a great replacement for a laptop, but not for PPC (specially phone edition devices).

First Hand Experience of TC in London Today

Today, I went to INKINO's shop at Tottenham Court Road, where thay have got a Touch Cruise available for testing. Fell in love on first sight. Design, size, weight and not to mention the gorgeous flushed screen and smooooooth touch flo experience. Only thing I didn't like was the silver faceplate at the bottom where buttons are. Screen surrounding is glossy, more as greyish but depends on light, however thr bottom is definitely silver which looks off. On contrary to the pics on web, even the scroll wheel is silver not black as shown on expansys. I hop this was pre-production sample model and actual will be black and better etched. Otherwise, functionality is great, very fast and even video playback was not as bad as some people say it is. Album is coooool.
Overall, worth replacing Kaiser with Touch Cruise means sacrificing keyboard for less weight and style
However, today's adventure was overshadowed when I cam home and checked on the internet that expected delivery now on expansys is 9th Feb...
So I guess we will be just talking about TC and looking online for a while as owning one in UK is a bit impossible in near future.
Sorry man, I'm so ticked off to say anything.
Gutted.
cool! will go and have a look tomorrow. did they know when they'd be expecting their first shipment?
I ordered in the U.S,(pre-order)and their saying anytime from end of Jan on thru Feb, depending on which shipment your in line for. Prioritized ya know. Gotta just try and forget about it. It'll happen when it happens.
I feel for you guys
Being one of the lucky few who got his device in December (but was waiting for months before that as well ) I can say it's worth the wait.
Still crap that you guys have to wait to long. Let's hope this is the last time everybody has to wait for the damned thing!
ebay is your friend.
i found one for 630 shipped.
As per yesterday, at the shop itself they were saying expected 18th Jan or next Tuesday i.e,. 22nd. But by then expansys hadn't changed there dates. Not sure if INKINO gets it from the same supplier as expansys then they would have changed their dates as well.....
Expansys always do this, keep people on a waiting game. I had to go through the same crap with the when I wanted to buy the Dell Axim, they kept moving the dates further and further until it became obvious they didn't know themselves and just wanted to keep us attached to them.
About the scrollwheel color: it's a bit darker grey, but definitely not black (in the final non test-version). Sorry
I went in yesterday. It's very low key, the Touch Cruise was just lying on the counter when I went in there. The staff behind the counter were pretty friendly and talkative. I learned some stuff that I'll post in the UK Availability thread in a minute.
Regarding the device, it was much as I expected, but then I'd done so much research and had an Artemis before so I didn't expect many surprises. I suppose the only things to mention are:
The Neutral/Bad
1) I was hoping to be won over by the styling when I saw it in real life but I wasn't. That doesn't mean that I hate it either, it wasn't any worse than I was hoping, it just wasn't any better either. Then again, I suspect this is a pre-release unit and might not be 100% representative of the actual manufactured unit so who knows.
2) It really did pick up fingerprints on the screen very badly. Then again, it didn't have a screen protector on it so that might help. I don't think there's really much HTC or anyone can do about this, if your going to be dragging your fingers across a transparent smooth surface then it will get grubby.
The Good
1) From the reviews, and playing with a TouchCube clone on my Artemis in the past, I'd pretty much decided to disable the TouchCube and TouchFlo scrolling when I got the device. After playing with the real HTC implementation on the TC I liked it and now plan to leave it on, especially now that this forum has exposed the registry settings to customise the cube.
2) I thought I might miss the trackball from the Artemis (I liked it) but after playing with the Dpad, once I got my brain to remember that it is now a conventional clickable Dpad as well as a scroll wheel, I really liked it and think I will find it more useful than the old Artemis trackball.
Finally, some general notes about Inkino (the shop):
1) If anyone goes there then don't be confused (I was). The address of 48 Tottenham Court Road that they have on their web site is correct but, for some reason, the sign outside the shop actually says "Sunrise Digital" (their other shop on Great Russell Street does have an Inkino sign but that's not where the TC is).
2) If anyone is ever in a hurry for accessories then they sell Brando screen protectors (but not for the TC yet) and also some other accessories, e.g. the official HTC 3.5mm headphone adaptor.
Their pricing isn't really competitive with the cheapest on the internet but if you're in London and willing to spend a slight premium for the "I want it now" factor then it looks a decent place to get it. They didn't come across as obnoxious and high pressure as some of the TCR places and actually seemed pretty enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the products.
- Julian
Great, I was waiting, for something like this before my final decision.
Thanks mate
Myself and my mate Mark [Dark Fire] we're heading down there tomorrow probably. He got his touch 128 rom there on its first day i think. We just want to go look at the cruise lol.. not buy, neither of has enough money i think. Did you think the shop was kindof dingy?, i think i've been ther, because i recall in june only seeing one shop with an athena, and that was sitting on top of the desk, and it may well have been inkino [I was looking all down TCR for TV's.

Tell us your stories/reviews about your device

I think mobile computing got a kick in the ass witht he release of the Apple iPhone. Microsoft and Palm beat Apple to the punch but Apple made it a lot easier and more friendly to use. if you would like to comment on any funny, sad, or a review of your device, post them here.
i will get the ball rolling... I own a Windows Mobile 5.0 powered device that i purchased back in december 2007 as a christmas present to myself. i won my device at auction in spite of the condition it was in. the mic is broken so i have to use my bluetooth earpiece to make phone calls. the device itself was in ok shape (i added some more body damage to it. but nothing major). i was always skeptical about smartphones and such. i test drive the iphone and liked it but expensive. the phone i currently use was not expensive at all (again with its defects). i overlooked all those and saw the potential my phone had. it is an ETEN G500 in case any readers were wondering. Being in college, my phone made my life a lot easier and being connected everywhere made me rethink my position and now i am all about my phone. Since it is GPS enabled with one of the best chipsets out on the market (SirfStarIII), i can go anywhere i want. it blew me away after i got it to work with TomTom 6 software. i am late to the game with smartphones and such but i did my thorough research before i made an offer on ebay, where my phone came from. i am glad i never regretted purchasing it at all. having a device that can compete with todays devices made me take even more pride in my phone. i don't care if it is bulkier and heavier. for my phone being relatively old since it is an '05/'06 phone. it is far from being obsolete by my standards. once i get enough money together i will upgrade to a better one, but for now, my phone i konw will last me another few years at least.
one success story i would like to share. i was with a friend and he needed some books to help him with a paper for a class. we were in borders store and he bought the first book ($20) b/c of the amount of info it had. the second book he was gonna buy had some info (a lot nonetheless) that was missing from the first book he bought. So he took my phone and typed all the info he needed in Word Mobile. After he was done, i sent it to him through e-mail on the spot and he was able to retreive it and open the document with no problems at all. i saved him $30 (which what the price of the second book) and helped him get a good grade on his paper.
there you have it. i maybe just obsessive with my phone, but i feel like with situations like this, my phone came in handy. i am a technology fanboy, not a microsoft, and not an apple fanboy. But, having a pocket pc/phone powered by microsoft certainly helps a lot especially in a school setting.
Tell me about your stories!
I use my device as a flashlight almost everyday thanks to VJCandela. It also does everything I need and if it doesn't I just have to install some software and it will. It's highly customizable, allows for countless mods and not anyone has one.
With affordable data plans coming to Canada there will be even more features unlocked on my phone like instant Wikipedia access, on-the-go blogging...
Unlike the almost obsolete PalmOS, Windows Mobile is here to stay.

Best Mobile Technologies of the Dacade

Here's a thought I had about 10 of the greatest mobile technologies of this decade
GPS:
Even though GPS technology was already successfully tested in 1960, it still feels like it made the biggest breakthrough in the past 10 years or so.
I love location based services and GPS navigators, but when I really need to get somewhere I just call my wife.
It's faster, doesn't require any typing, gives better support for parking issues, and react better to unexpected obstacles on the way...
Phone Camera:
True, it sucks. All of them suck. They are slow, they don't work well at nights, but can you imagine yourself without a handy camera exactly when the right situations are happening?
3G
The first commercial launch of 3G happened in Japan on 1 October 2001, it took some time until we all enjoyed it, but can you imagine our world today without it? (Actually I can: less radiation...)
WiFi
Introduced back in the 80's, WiFi is today a 'must have' in any smartphone, and of course: everywhere. (Think how boring it can be without WiFi:
Waiting for your next flight... sitting in a coffee shop... dating a hot girl... all of those - without a decent wireless network?)
Palm Treo
Regardless to the fact Palm is doing really bad lately - I think the Treo line of products was the first "friendly" smartphones. My favorite of all times was the Treo 750 for stability and speed, great bulky design, good enough keyboard, and more
T9:
It's true that I'm not using it that much anymore, and there are people who get annoyed by it, but you have to admit it's a great invention, and does improve your typing speed most of the times.
BlackBerry
What a great thing is is: The BlackBerry.
Sure, the UI looks more like notepad on steroids, the browser suck and the push email functionality is addictive.
But what a great addiction! (I mean: when it's working...)
That endless online chat, dressed up as business emails is just the greatest thing around. I absolutely love finding out that my red light is blinking! I'm not alone! Someone out there loves me! Or at least needs my help with something!
Give me some of that red light! Give me... I need it now!
Oh, and there's that great Iron-Man style trackball - The Mobile Spoon loves that one!
SMS
The SMS was invented back in the 80's (notice how all the great stuff was invented during the 80's: WiFi, SMS, Boy George...).
One of the best ways to communicate, whether you are in meetings, toilets, riding a horse, whatever...
iPhone
Well well well, here's one item that is going to put me in troubles.
Say what you want: no multi threading, no keyboard, irreplaceable battery, I don't care.
When the iPhone just arrived it looked like it came from another world. It was not just great, it started a revolution.
No more stylus, so long D-Pad, tons of innovative ideas, best design in town.
This is the real thing. No matter how big are the limitations.
End/Send buttons
And speaking of iPhone's limitations, how about adding 2 hardware buttons?
I recently noticed that every wireless phone at my parents house (and for some reason they have a lot) has a different layout and location for the 'Send', 'Open', 'OK' and 'Cancel' buttons.
And I'm asking: why?
I'm not a phone manufacturer and even I know the secret: You put the 'End' on the right side, the 'Send' on the left side and that's it!
Still, we have to appreciate the fact that at least with the cellular phones and smartphones this is now a standard.
Having fun? More stories in 2009 top stories
And now for my 5 overrated mobile technologies of this decade:
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a great technology. Too bad relying on it usually makes you very frustrated;
You've got Bluetooth car kits that are great if you want to really piss off your friends when you call them from your car and they can barely understand what you are saying...
You've got Bluetooth headsets that will cook your brains, and there's always the same old test of trying to send files between devices - something that never really works...
Widgets:
I'm not against having a nice widgets bar somewhere in the right side of your window, but wasting an entire smartphone shell on widgets? I rather have some UI experts optimizing my screen and creating a professional consistent user interface.
Propriety cradles:
Do I even need to explain? It's 2010 now, let's hope Samsung and all the others finally replace their proprietary cradles with the miniUSB cable... Dha...
iTunes
Strong, efficient, works like hell, but what about the user experience? Does anyone know how to really work with that thing?
Is that Apple's great usability?
(I don't like the iTunes, Am I allowed to say that? Will apple ban me? Will I be banned by Apple's freaks of nature? Will they take away my iPhone?)
Twitter
Come on... Twitter? Is that for real???
It's a feature in facebook! One feature out of hundreds!
Still, I must give credit to the Twitter folks, they already earn money while facebook is only gaining popularity...
The main reason I've included Twitter in this side of the list (the bad guys) is that it's too simple, too small, too basic, too boring to get so much attention by the smartphones manufacturers who embed it inside their main screens.
What's wrong with a simple twitter client?
(is that the time to invite you all to follow me on twitter?)
-------------------------------
OK, so that's it for this one.
Hope you enjoyed our little technologies parade - I know I did!
Would love to know what are your best mobile technologies for 2000-2009!

It's close between Bluetooth and WiFi for me.

Hi, as a noob I apologise if I have posted this in the incorrect place, however, this is both a request for help and a reply to your question.
I have a medical issue causing me to leave the military. Without telling the whole story, in the space of 2 years after coming back from sea, I was wiped out twice on my first and second ZX-6 Ninja (idiot did right hand turn in front of me, second rammed me on my new one at a red light) then I was rammed from behind in my car by an idiot who decided to double the speed limit). Then I was rammed from behind at another red light by an idiot who hit the idiot behind me. Then I was ripped out of the passenger side of my wife's car after coming off the freeway, by another moron who then whacked me in the face twice with a piece of firewood, sending me unconscious. Total 13 surgeries, 2 broken hands, 1 broken arm, 2 broken shoulders, a broken neck, broken knee, broken nose and to top it off I have severe nerve pain in my dominant right hand, and due to meds I have collapsed multiple times and have dislocated my fingers diving off my balcony in my sleep. So to try and get some sort of safety device installed in my house that could detect if I fall DVA suggested a unit that relied on mercury switches, a transceiver, transponder and a physical connection to my home phone total $2000 and a waste of time as the thing goes off every five minutes when you lay down which I do due to constant headaches and migraines, so pretty useless. As a Military Communications Electronics Technician I could have built the thing myself using an arduino and some sensors. So having an iPhone 5 with every sensor under the sun I went searching the Apple App Store. Pointless nothing worked even with my jail broken phone that would run in the background and just activate when needed. So having had multiple android phones and I still have an Asus TF101 (rooted) so I did a search on Google Play and there are half a dozen apps that do exactly what I want (almost). So I grabbed a Samsung Galaxy Note 3, best I could find battery, sensor. Processor and Memory wise. It works a treat, except for 1. When its charging 2. In my backpack whilst I'm on the train (so no one nicks it from me) 3. When I'm driving 4. When I just don't feel like having a massive phone in my pocket and I want to put it down. Keeping in mind I have it in an Otterbox Defender ATM and I am considering getting a ZeroLemon case with 10000mAh battery. So I believe a secondary device wirelessly connected to my perfectly good phone (save for those examples above) which I can use to Stop Alarm Conditions (I am trialling an App called Fade and it is the best so far) when I have the phone away from me (in pocket, in car, backpack etc) now this App 1 Sends an SMS to my wife 2 sends an email to my Carer 3 Dials my wife, opens the circuit, she can hear what's going on if I am moaning or groaning or I'm making a cup of tea. My wife being a cop gets a pretty good response, the last time it was three cops and three ambos kicking me out into consciousness. Now with the selection of watches that are available now, I'm tossing up between the Sony SW2 and the Samsung Gear ( if someone can programme the thing to open a video feed from my wrist it would be awesome). Problem without having them I cannot try them out and figure out which is best.
Now I know there are pendants you can get (I doubt I'm going to have a heart attack and be awake to trigger it) . To me it just makes good sense to have a watch and a phone combination that can give me the security to know that if I collapse whilst looking after my daughter (she's not even 2) then my Carer or my wife can get to my home or have emergency services get here and secure my daughter. Then look after me if I'm still ticking. So that is my answer and question.
If this isn't a bad joke, Wow man ... My jaw is on the floor. What an unlucky streak you had. Well this might be the right time to acquire a new device in the form of a smart wrist device. This week at CES companies are announcing their new devices. LG already announced a wrist band type of a device which also doubles as a watch. The neat thing is with the special headphones it cones with it can monitor your hearth beats as well. http://www.engadget.com/2014/01/06/lg-lifeband-touch-heart-rate-monitor-earphones/ checkt it out. Also there will be more smartwatches announced this week. You can just pick one to your liking.
Samsung galaxy gear is nice with all the bells and the whistles but the problem is the battery life. SW2 has less but better battery life. But I believe there will be better devices hopefully very soon.

Cheers mate appreciate it. Your jaw is on the floor. I think mine is about the only thing I haven't broken. Having said that, I reckon I could write a book based on the last 5 almost 6 years. Trust me, I do not leave the house nowadays without good reason. I have also considered making a video on you tube so I don't have to continue to repeat the entire fiasco to every surgeon and specialist i hive to go to, not to mention lawyers.
Anyways, the Galaxy Gear, would suit my needs I think, that is if I can get "Fade" onto the watch itself. After doing a thorough analysis of everything out there at the moment, the Gear is the only watch I could find with its own accelerometer and gyroscope. Having said that, if that doesn't work it may be a pain to have to learn to code an app for the Gear to do it, firstly not sure if there is an SDK for it, secondly I wouldn't have the faintest idea how to replicate the algorithm that the designer of "Fade" has used.
Oh I also discovered , that the Gear actually does have a vibrate mode. Not one video I have seen or webpage I have been to has mentioned.it save one Youtube video I saw last night. Cannot point you to it because this form is telling me I have had to post 10 posts before it will let me quote URLs.

Thank you. Found out yesterday I am probably having another neck surgery. Find out if I will have another surgery on my shoulder, in a couple of weeks.
And you are right, it does sound like a joke. In the first accident my wife who was pillion landed flat on her face with my Ninja on top of her. I was trying to figure out why I couldn't get the bike off of her to check her vitals. Turned out my right hand was practical sitting where my elbow was. I didn't notice til someone pointed it out. My wife ended up with a strained ankle. I ended up broken everywhere.
