What do you use the G Tab for?

I have never owned a tablet before. I never thought I had a use for one. But once the iPad and Android tablets started flooding the market, I kept thinking, "man, those are cool". But I still didn't know what I would use one for.
So now I have a G Tablet, with all of the mods applied, but I still don't know why I need it, or want it. I do most of my computing at my desk. When on the go, I use my Nexus One. Right now my G Tablet is just an expensive Angry Birds console.
So, tell me what you use yours for, before I get bored and return this item.
BTW, This is not a knock on the G Tablet, I am very impressed with the hardware (except for the viewing angles) on this device.

personally i got it for my kitchen to have a laptop like device that isnt so big and bulky like a laptop for internet radio and to access apps and cooking apps for the wifey. plus something to quickly access the web in the kitchen without having to open the laptop or try getting to the browser on my phone.
also use it to control the lights throughout the lights since i have x10 lighting in my house.

I was like you, thinking that the combo of a desktop computer, a laptop, and my Nexus One meant that a tablet would be unnecessary. I'd almost always be on either my laptop or my N1 in the evenings while watching TV, just keeping an eye on e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, etc. Plus playing a lot of Angry Birds.
But, since I got my gTab, I've used my laptop maybe twice in five weeks. My phone just sits at my side in case I get an actual call (rare!). I use my tablet *all the time* when I'm on the sofa. It's great to have a much larger screen to look at (instead of my N1) when reading Kindle books or playing Angry Birds or just surfing. I also like typing on it more since I installed Thumb Keyboard, which in landscape mode has a split-keyboard to allow for easy thumb-only typing. I watch more streaming video than I ever would have bothered to on my N1.
And it's ergonomically much more comfortable than dealing with my laptop all evening.
It's also great to have when on the treadmill compared to an N1, again for Kindle or whatever.

I use it for music on the go around my home. I may be in the kitchen doing some cooking, or helping with laundry or cleaning. I do it all with music.
I use it to surf while on the couch watching TV, anything that pops to my mind...something relating to the show, etc.
I use it in the kitchen in the rare occasion I feel like doing something different. My wife is an awesome cook but she gets home at 5 or so, so sometimes I try to do the right thing and cook some dinnah...and sometimes I'm inspired enough to try a recipe from the net.
I use it in bed when I'm winding down to go to sleep. Music or maybe an episode of something; surf the web or read an e-book.
I use it to read...magazines, ebooks, whether I'm in the couch, on the balcony, etc.
So in the end, for me it's a great value. I just wish it worked properly without flashing additional stuff.
It's a really great notebook replacement when all you want to do are the lighter things like listen to music, watch tv, surf the web or read a book/magazine. Can you do these things on your PC or Notebook? Of course you can!, but if you're the type of person who doesn't like to sit behind a PC or under a laptop for 12 hrs then it really works out.
My 2 complaints, 1 major and 1 minor are how crappy the initial software is (major) and how heavy it is (minor)...the weight may be necessary as I suspect the battery to be the culprit, and almost all the Tegra 2 devices releasing currently are this heavy, but a nicer weight would have been 1lb vs. 1.55lbs which becomes weighty in one hand after a while. The Archos 101 is just around 1lb and feels very nice to hold.

I used this to play emulators like Tiger Mame and Snes, I watch Justin TV, browse the web, a night clock...etc. The 10.1 screen is great for all of those things especially on long road trips like the one I took with my family last week. My kids were playing and watching videos for most of our trip. I love this thing!!!
They also used this to Vid chat. It was great because they got to say Merry Xmas to their grandparents face to face (sorta).
All of this and the battery was still at 30%+ after a 7 hr drive! That's frickin crazy...I think. Escpecially with the tablet running those tasks.

I like these ideas. Keep them coming.
I normally use my eee pc on the sofa and what not. I can see this is better solution for that, since it plays videos much better.

First you gotta look into x10 lighting which is special lighting for your house, the house i bought i was lucky enough it had the lighting in it already i just needed the "base". What happends is you get a "base" which sends signals out to devices lights/appliances/security systems for them to turn on and off. They reach out to modules which you add to a light, for instance you get a wall switch one instead of wiring the wires to a normal light switch you wire them into this x10 module which has dials on them you set the dials to a "channel" and thats how it communicates with the base. it sounds more complicated than it really is, a very easy affordable way to get it is with lamp modules which are the cheapest and they plug right into any wall outlet and have a female end on the other side where you plug in something like say a lamp. If you need anymore info on the actual setup of x10 just research on google x10 lighting and it will give you all the info.
for the app there are many paid apps out there you can get but your best off with the one thats free called autom8 its not on the market but there is a link for it if you search "autom8 android" in google you should be able to find it, it has a video attached to it of the kid doing it on his android phone, i have it on my droid 1 and now on my g tablet in the kitchen so i can turn on the lights before i even walk into the house

That's frickin cool! haha. I didn't know that even existed.

I travel quite a bit for the company I own and I am just flat tired of hauling around a laptop around airports etc. Mostly what I do is keep in touch with email but occasionally have to get into one of the network servers. I tried doing this with my smartphone but it was just too tiny and too limiting that way so I kept on hauling around my laptop.
The tablet allows me to do these without the laptop hassle. If I have to answer an email it is still a minor pain with a screen keyboard but with the tablet its much less of a hassle. During flights I can use it to play games, compose emails for sending later, writing notes or even just reading.
Its a lot less weight to carry. It may not seem like much to some but after carrying around a leather case with a shoulder strap with a six pound laptop and another two pounds of other stuff I would get to my hotels with big red strap marks on my shoulder. Now the weight is reduced by well over half and it "feels" good.

This is interesting stuff. First, the autom8 android seems to be an abandoned app. But reading some forums there appear to be other alternatives out there that do the same thing and have an active developer.
The price of the x10 modules are incredibly cheaper when they came out years ago. I hadn't looket at it lately but I did when they first came on the market and I thought that they were crazy expensive and I never looked at them again. Now, you can buy kits that are just about dirt cheap.
Sounds like a fun plaything but I don't see much use for it myself. If I still lived in Los Angeles it would have lots of good uses for security. But, now I live out in the country in rural Kansas and when we went to Europe we forgot to lock the front door. No biggie, didn't worry about it and when we got back all was fine.

I am in the same boat not sure why I bought it at the beginning. I have a laptop (very light-weight 4lb + very fast CPU + 14.1 screen), a desktop and a couple of pocket PCs (HP iPAQ). Now, my g-tablet has a "real" purpose.. is to piss off my apple-addicted co-workers (most of my co-workers use Mac laptops + Ipads, Iphones, etc). Even my helpdesk dept does not like Android, linux or windows and they think Apple is the best. Anyways, I brought my G-tablet to work one day and showed them CNN.com with Flash and ran the Quadrant score.. hahahaha.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. You know how I see it? You can buy few other electronics for $350-$400 that are going to pull off what this can. It's a handheld computer - it runs better graphics than I think most netbooks at this price point and the only other electronics you will buy with $400 is maybe a mid end 32" LCD TV which let's face it - you probably already own something bigger/better, in fact maybe even 2 or 3.
So I mean....unless you're willing to WAIT until March/April for the more solid stuff to come with either 2.3 as the base or Honeycomb, at least you can get a few things done in the meantime with the newest stock s/w....and hopefully by the time they become mainstream we'll get an official update that even the devs won't feel necessary to mod too heavily to be workable.
I almost decided to return mine today when the screen became unresponsive and no amount of claimed calibration would work. But I calmed down, did a full wipe and now it's good. I think the hardware is pretty solid, it's just the software that is a total mess and the devs here are doing the best they can with what they have but in the end I think it's the people that sit down in labs and workstations that need to make at least a solid software core for things to be based upon and I don't think that's the case with the tnt software, zpad software or vega software. I think it's all based on some pretty crummy stuff. I still have high hopes for something better when Honeycomb comes, or something written from the ground up by the devs here based on 2.3.

man let me see......what don't you use the gtab for????? lol. I mainly use it while watching tv i can watch football and browse the web. i like the google finance app to check my stocks. its great entertainment when i have company i leave it on the coffe table so guests can play with it or surf the web... yeah i have 2 laptops even an ultra light and thin 11.6" screen 3.5 lbs but i still prefer this as my internet browser while on the couch... sure i can do all that on my iphone 4 but i cant even look at that small screen after getting used to my tab! i tether my phones internet to it so a long ride in the car goes by quick, when others are driving of course. i love the old school nintendo emulators also...again can do all that from my phone but why when i have a ten inch screen.

Travelling with less than two pounds... access to my brokerage account and virtually all the investment pages I tend to use... E-mail... news, sports, weather... Twitter feeds I follow... much easier to carry around the house than the laptop. An aside: the WiFi is very sensitive. On an Amtrak train, waiting to leave Chicago's Union Station and then at least for an hour or two heading West to Denver, I had the choice of a dozen or so connections available to me. About half were open networks from hotels and eateries. As the train picked up speed, available connections changed every few minutes. Crazy stuff. The December VS update just before Christmas was wonderful for this stock gTablet. The only fix I want now is video added to Skype capabilities.

Same here. Chat, read email, browse the web, all on my sofa and much more comfortable. I use my laptop in the morning... to prop up my tablet.

I use my g tablet for everything the only time I use my PC was to download the new roms but now I have rom manager working my PC is just a dvr I also use the PC as dual boot 64 bit windows/linux. If I could use Linux on the g tablet my PC would be an expensive dvr only right now I'm using vegan beta4 and its pretty smooth

[Q] Windshield mounts for Samsung Captivates

I learned of a free Android app a week back, called DailyRoads Voyager, that turns your cell phone, into a video recorder, of the road ahead of you, as you are driving. As the police have cameras in their squad cars to film what is happening in front of them, this app does as well. There's a link to YouTube, showing a man driving with this set up, and a woman ahead of him, hits an elderly man's car, and runs away. He follows her, and you can hear him talking, so Audio is also part of it, and it allows you to make phone calls, without stopping the filming. He called the police, and managed to hem her in, and she's indignant, that's he's filming her. She denies the accident, although he filmed it, and this shows how useful it may be, for instance, in case an accident happens in front of you. I have a Samsung Captivate SGH I897, with AT&T, and I'm stunned, at how hard it is, to actually get info on these mounts. The phone must be in LANDSCAPE mode, so a 360 probably is needed, as well as a swivel, that allows to either push or pull an end, so you could film on the shoulder of the road. And I must admit, I'd love to have the phone's audio playing through my car radio, but I have to say, I'm not sure how to do it. Years ago, I knew buying a small device, could connect to a station on the radio, but with a cell phone, I'm not sure. I found a few that use FM out to the radio, so it possibly would need to be built into the mount. The screen faces the inside of the car, while the camera in back, faces the road, so obviously, the phone holder, can't block the camera. Has anyone dealt with a situation like this? Where I live, there are only a few small business's, that carry electronic gear and accessories, and I tried them. But I'd like a holder, that will hold, and not fall off as the glass gets hot, or you hit a bump in the road, so talking to someone that knows about the mounts, would help. Any suggestions about this?

Hello: I hate this phone. Actually the phone is decent, but I got so mad at it the other day i whipped it across my office. Luckily it was in an otter box and after bouncing off the wall it landed in the shipping and receiving department, i.e. a giant pile of bubble wrap and peanuts
My problem rests with the on screen keyboard. What a stupid idea, getting rid of functionality for elegant design. i didn't buy an iphone. I bought a tool. I'll take an ugly brick over a polished turd any day, just give me something that works... I send over 2000 txts and hundreds of emails from my phone every month. I know texting while driving is bad, but this on screen keyboard makes it even more dangerous, because i have to actually look at the phone, and i make so many mistakes it takes me forever to go back and correct everything. auto correct is a fail, always replaces the wrong words, and never corrects things that i would actually want corrected.
in short, i need a bluetooth keyboard. anyone have good experiences with a pocket sized BTKB and this phone? I see some decent ones on amazon for CHEAP, but nothing with steller android reviews. Can anyone recommend anything?

I haven't seen anything great out myself but have you tried Go Keyboard?
I use it all of the time even while driving, you can just press the mic button and talk what you want to text and it puts it in for you, you have to be clear speaking about it but it works. Standard bluetooth keyboards work good though no matter which one you use considering your not going to be texting from the next room on a 4 inch screen, most people complain about range and how well it connects at 10 feet, I think your safe no matter what you pick.

I'm playing with Go KB right now, not bad... but it still isn't a keyboard. I'm thinking, maybe if i get a sliding kb designed for iphone, and hacking it to make it work with this phone...

Here come tanless watches

When I was growing up my dad always wore a wrist watch. On the few occasions he ever took it off, it looked like he was still wearing something around his wrist due to the absense of the massive tan he got from working outside.
I think a wrist phone is a great idea, but wouldn't buy one unless it could actually function as a phone. I personally hate wrist watches, but would start to like them if I could remove the phone from my pocket, and I'm sure a lot of others would too.

Ha, I just got my Gear 2 and started wearing it when I take my daily walk. The first thing I thought of was that this was going to mess up my tan.

The importance of attraction is different to people in this day and age, for some people, they feel a lot better mentally when they know they're looking good.

I don't think this would be possible. With the moving parts and displays on the watch, it would be impossible for it to be tan through. But it is a great idea!

I too think that is a good idea.

Honestly I do not recommend you to use the smartwatch under the scorching sun for too long, I think that the screen may be affected

A. Full Android watches with SIMs and everything have existed for years. If that's what you want why don't you have one already?
B. The whole point is to be able to to have a personal area network with a single control unit managing the experience across all of your contacted devices, not a series of independent devices each vying for your attention in a disjointed way. Think of the watch as an extension of your existing phone that you can access without having to pull the phone out of your pocket, enter your pin, find your app, and finally do an action. This also allows the watch to offload the heavy processing tasks to the powerful device you already have in your pocket 99% of the time. What good is having your phone, and a second, less powerful processor in your watch both running 100% of the operations in parallel?

Rather look pasty white than have skin damage, in the worst case skin cancer is not very attractive.

The reason your logic isn't working is because you assume that people would still carry a second device. Not everybody wants a powerful device because not everybody plays games, or surfs the internet or other things that require a larger screen.
Another question similar to the one you are asking is, why would people buy a tablet when their phone can already do everything and more than it can do.
If there was a choice between a pocket phone with an optional wrist device, or a wrist phone with an optional reading device, a lot of people would go for the smaller, highly mobile wrist phone.
It wouldn't interfere with mobility and it would be readily available.
Something else that may be bogus, but would probably factor into some people's decisions is that it would distance the RF source from reproductive organs.

will it really be affected? i mean all the gears are out there... and there are to be worn and designed most of the time and probably under scorching sun?

I also thought this seemed like a good idea, Android on your wrist. So I bought a cheap one to see.
I got one from Chinavasion(can't posts links yet obviously). The one I got was the "3G Android Watch Phone 'FineWatch' - MTK6577 Dual Core 1GHz CPU, 2 Inch IPS Screen, 4GB ROM, 8GB Additional Memory" because it seemed to have be biggest screen and the best hardware of the no-name ones.
But the android version is horrible on the device, and I kinda wanna install a new one. Watch can't log on to my google account, due to it not understanding the 2-step vertification procedure. And it has no Google play, browser doesn't show any images when browing play.google.com etc. All-in-all horrible, is there a way to fix this by installing a more normal version of Android? Like without bricking it or using the old version?
Can someone point me in the right direction to make this watch the best I ever wore?

Thoughts on Gear S2 Classic as my first wearable

I was looking to get something for the holidays and I wasn't sure what to get, I've been weighing all the potential benefits of the things I could get for about the same amount of money but eventually I was just like, **** it, the Gear S2 looks cooler than all the other things, plus I'm kind of tired of fumbling around to get out my phone just to check the time. I didn't even bother with online, just went to BestBuy where they had a $60 off promotion and got it there. Overall I think I'm very satisfied, but I'm going to talk about my negative points so I can sort of, end on a good note.
I think I've been spoiled by my Galaxy S5 LTE-A's 5.1' 1440p display, the display on the Gear S2 I really cannot call "sharp". I don't know why it's like forgotten now days, but PPI for these PENTILE layout displays aren't the same as RGB LCD panels. There are only half as many red and blue pixels, so for the Gear S2, density for blue and red are around 150 not 300, which is like, iPhone 3G level. Now my S5 screen's width is about twice the width of the Gear S2's screen, but it's 1440 green pixels across, where as the watch is only 360 green pixels, and 180 blue/red pixels. Obviously I won't be able to tell this just glancing at the time, but when I read any kind of text, or scroll through the apps and looking at their icons, it's quite easy to tell. Given that this is a watch with a tiny display, you would naturally have it closer to your face so "retina" level would have to be at least greater than iPhone 4's 300. Also, all of my other displays, including desktop monitors, are already retina level so yea... I'm a spoiled brat at this.
Everyone is praising the ring like crazy but I don't think I'm so impressed. Sure it's good but not that much better than just using the touchscreen. For example if I want to get through to the next page of apps, I have to turn the thing all the way around to do that, where as you can just swipe once with the screen. Another problem is with the mechanism itself, the steps are too far apart and there is a lot of room in between steps where the ring doesn't tend to snap back or forth. So often I find my self leaving it in between steps, and it becomes easy to accidentally engage the next step and cause unwanted scrolling/wake ups. It could really use smaller steps with more snap force.
And obviously, lack of app support, almost all of them are made by second and third rate solo developers who are just not good at graphics design so their apps look like **** and totally don't fit the elegant design of the device they're supposed to run on. All the countless Mr.Time watchfaces are just swapping different images even with the exact same date dial. Really? Is that the best way you can think of to use a 360x360 matrix of RBGB lights with 16.7 millions colors each? Make slightly different images rotate exactly like a mechanical watch? What a waste of potential!
Fortunately, I went into this knowing that the app support will be **** because nobody will give a **** for Tizen. I made that decision because I honestly don't use that many apps on my phone to begin with, cuz I don't socialize that much. So it really doesn't bother me if I can't reply to Hangouts because I don't use Hangouts, or Facebook, or twitter, or instagram, or watsup, or whatever social network thing people use. The only things I'll be missing are the high quality watch faces actually suitable for a smartwatch, instead of just changing different stickers on the same mechanical watch face. I figured I'll attempt to make my own, can't be that hard. In the mean time Samsung has a decent selection of worthwhile watch designs.
Aside from all that, using this thing is just great, people say things like oh why would you get another device that needs to be charged every day that does all the same thing your phone can do? Well first of all, charging really isn't even a problem because unless you're terribly unorganized person, you're probably gonna leave your watch at the same place every day anyway. Might as well just sit it on a magnetic dock, it literally adds no complications to your daily routine. And secondly, sure I can check the time on my phone, but you know what else I can do? I can go home, turn on my computer, and check the time on my computer! Just because you can do it, doesn't mean it's the best way to do it. You know what's the best way to check time? According to centuries of trial and error, it's the WATCH! And if you're gonna look at that thing several times a day, might as well give it a pretty screen and info on what's going on on your phone.
The wake up gesture just works surprisingly well, like it's almost really difficult to try and look at the watch without turning on the display. The battery life is just shocking, I've yet been able to make it go under 80% before I go to sleep. It's probably the first smart watch that's barely small enough to not be bulky (yea even the apple watch feels a bit thick), I mean just look at the Moto 360, it's round but look at that edge! It just looks like somebody intentionally made it thick enough to house a battery. Where as the Gear S2 seems to have a natural thickness derived from its overall shape. The back doesn't look as kick-ass as the apple watch but the front is definitely the best there is.
I mean yes it's like three times as expensive as I would spend on a regular watch, but I really think it's worth it, even if I can't use Google Voice/Now, even if I have no access to even slightly creative watch faces. For the features it does have, it does them extremely well, and totally above expectations. Small things like never miss another (rare) message notifications, skipping tracks without having to like, penta-click the tiny button on my headset, being able to unlock the phone without constantly having to use the fingerprint sensor. And of course, being able to say, Yes it's a smart watch, *****! Won't get that from the Apple watch, because everybody knows it's an Apple watch.

Well I just got one from the wife for xmas. I will go over what I like and do not like as I wear it. This is my first wearable also and so far I am loving it. I have small wrists and the bands are nice. I will most likely look for a new band at some point but for now the one that comes with it is wearable...
Also for the apps side I am really hoping S Health is better than it is on my note 3 cuz I turned that off as I have been using a Fitbit Charge HR (which may go to my son but need to see if the watch can do what I want)
I like the Fitbit App as it does everything in one but worst case I can figure out how to use myfitnesspal and s health... more to look into..
and also the guys over at homeseer.com made a free plugin for fitbit into home automation for logging, etc...

I have an S2 too, classic, and this is my first "smart"watch. Coming from a lifetime of casio's DIGITAL watches i find it hard to see that the most interesting watchfaces are paid. Well that's life, you buy a very expensive watch and still have to buy accesories.....
For now i don't use the "healthy apps" and what i need is there. I see people complaining about shortage of apps...... The apps that are available are already too much for a watch...
I prefer battery life over apps..... But that's just me. One thing that i miss is the hour notification, alarms on the watch (not vibrating, it will never wake me up) but there should be a speaker in it for that.
Other thing that got me to buy this is the water and dustproof classification. It will get wet, it will get dirty..... Just hope that the gorilla glass can handle it all... Time will tell
