Porting games - General Topics

Is there a way to port the old dos-95-98 games to ppc, if theres any tutorials or out that would be great, because i dont mind porting alot of games to this language, after all ive heard good game conversions to 4-5 days
thanks

You would need the source code of the games you want to convert. Otherwise, you need an emulator for the OS/Game, or you need to rewrite the game by reverse engineering. 4-5 days would be optimistic for that.

thanks for the fast reply, I have a source code for a game I want yes
this game is homeworld - space strategy, its specs fit into the uni and I would resize textures and redo meshing on the models too
any thoughts

if i were you i'd contact some of all those people who
ported games like doom1-2 quake1-2 dukenuke'm heretic, hexen
personaly i think homeworld use soo much direct3d that
it's not likely that it will work software renderd
or even with the current 3d chips on pda's but who knows

Need help makeing 3d ppc game

I AM SICK OF HAVING NO GAMES TO PLAY ON MY $400.00 BRICK OF A PHONE. i AM WOUNDERING HOW TO CREATE SOME 3D GAMES. I NEED HELP IN THE CODING. DONT POINT ME TO SOFTWARE FOR 2D GAMES OR FLASH AND A JAVA. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP IN ADVANCE.
You need to get a copy of Visual Studio, with a Windows Mobile SDK (google for all this), and then find a learning source for C++ (again, google is your friend).
You'll also need to learn OpenGL, some maths & physics, and think of some games that will work when you can only click one place at a time.
You've got a LOT of work ahead of you.
Good luck.

[REQ:] [3D] OpenGL Demo Competition and Developer Support

Seeing all the buzz'nfuzz about the OpenGL capabillities of this phone,
I pledge in this thread to ask developers to write a small howto on OpenGL
programming for this device. Not gamers per definition, but demo's.
A "demo" means an application that shows the skill of the programmer, and the performance of the device.
Looking at the work of vanKurt with his "tea-app"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=588650
and other openGL projects , I wonder if we can re-live the 80's in highres this time, hence,
I vote to start a demo competition !
Would like to hear from the pro's, the amateurs and the users if there's
any momentum to be gained here.
EDIT : poll question should read: "you are <20 years old"
I'm thinking this might be pretty cool... I have a base set up for OpenGLES 1 programs that I can release the code for if people want?
It's bloody slow on the HD2, so I'll see if I can make it work using a different setup, but it is at least a base for people to work from.
That would definately be interesting. The sad thing is: so far I only developed OpenGL ES 1.0 stuff. And for reasons I don't understand it all runs slow as hell on my HD2 (as mentioned above).
Thus I'm a little stuck at the moment. I have no clue how to migrate the code to OpenGL ES 2.0 (which is hopefully the solution???), so right now I can't contribute anything running > 10 FPS
Strangly there are some 3D game demos (XTRACT, Experiment 13, Electopia) which run absolutely smooth on the HD2. So as soon as this "miracle" is resolved we can get started....
OK let's jumpstart
If you both could post your work and your devsuite tools we can try and see if we can get started. Having a few users try, fail, ask and succeed seems a good idea.
Thanks for helping out.

Experiment 13 is using OpenGLES1, not 2, as is Manila, so clearly the hardware and drivers are up to it...
It might be worth having a look at the Silvermoon UI code over at codeplex. It was written using OpenGL and is open source, so could prove useful to people.

It's also very smooth... Will take a lot at the source code and try and work out why...
Will also film it when I can get a camera, and do a comparison with a Diamond and a few other applications...
Hi guys
I've tried getting the 3 games mentioned above ... but can't ... they've either been pulled from the XDA threads or they are on rapidshare which says I can't download because I'm downloading something already ... and I've not downloaded anything from it for months.
Cheers
Paul.
Has anyone tried OpenTK (Open Toolkit). Using their OpenGL ES bindings?
Or is pure c++ the way forward?
It's a great idea! I won't be joining myself though, as for all my driver patches for various platforms and such, I still struggle with drawing a rotating triangle
(I really should get into that, but time is always a restricting factor)
Looking forward to what you guys can come up with!

Anyone figured out how to make roller coaster tycoon playable on android?

Cause I checked its system specs and its not taxing at all on most devices. Can any of you heavenly xda developers figure this out
wait, are you talking about the Windows XP version?
if so, someone would have to start from scratch to create it. first of all, you can't just port a game with the click of a button because of the different Java languages (C#, C++, etc.) and the fact that you would have to map out touchscreen itself, make it fit a smaller screen , and make use of hardware buttons and similar things.
actually, it would be much easier to start from scratch than use a prexisting code from what i've heard...
i'm not a dev (well, i'm learning!) but that is what i do know from experience and things that I've read.
but yeah, im there with you... there's a few iOS apps that i would kill to have on my android ;3

How to build play station one emulator for android

i start learn java .. and planning to move to android
my java so weak until now
i just want to know the way to build my first app about ps1 emulator
so can i use app inventor for that or basic4android
or noway .. i have to use eclipse
Sorry for my English
Step one, install EPSXE. Step 2, load rom.
Sadly, while I don't doubt a better PS1 EMU might be possible, it won't have the years of bug work and trust EPSXE will on PC or Android so it's just not worth it to make a PS1, N64 or any Emulator for systems older than that because top notch EMU's already exist and the rest are just waiting for hardware to catch up before they are viable but there is already a DreamCast, PSP and PS2 emulator that still are being held back by current hardware limitations.
Sadly, there just isn't a need for any emulator and if you have the skill you'd honestly be better off joining one of the teams for an existing emulator to get the experience than trying to start a project like this on your own.
Not trying to shatter your dreams but there just isn't a need for another PS1 emulator that will be riddled with bug's and take you years to get to even half the status of EPSXE.

[EMU] aFBA 0.2.97.35 - Irem hardware question

Hi, I've been using this emulator for a while now, mostly playing Capcom games from the CPS1 to CPS3 era. I'm now looking at some Irem games, mainly the R-Type series, and specifically R-Type Leo. I grabbed the ROM's, loaded them into aFBA and hit Play but get nothing but a blank screen.
I figured I probably have the wrong romset but I can find little info about alternatives. I've tried R-Type, R-Type 2 and R-Type Leo, all different hardware, several different ROM's and get the same result for all - the various files within the zip appear to load, but then I'm left with a blank screen.
As far as I can see, FBA has all three games as compatible, not sure from which version but by 0.2.97.35 which is where the Android port is at, it sure seems to be.
Does anyone understand what might be happening here? I'm playing these on a Wikipad which has been pretty good for the CPS stuff. If it can handle CPS-3, I see no reason why Irem's 'M' hardware would cause it to struggle.
I'm not looking for working ROM's or anything, I just want to understand what might be happening so that I can learn and move on.
Thanks, Hayden
