Hello, I am going to be in Tokyo for the next few months for work. I use an HTC Hermes here in the UK. I am interested in having the office in Tokyo get me one to use whenever I am there. Questions:
1) Is the Softbank X01HT the model to go for? What advantages does this give over Docomo? Is there an unlimited data tariff? If not, what tariff should I go for if I want to use the phone for email and internet?
2) I use IMAP mail. I have tried but been disappointed with FlexMail 2007 as an email client, particularly since it does not support Asian characters. What other email clients (other than the WM5 standard which does not support multiple IMAP email addresses) are available with Asian language capability?
3) I am thinking the HTC Hermes will be best because it will be easy for me to configure since I already have one in the UK. Are there any other leading edge WM devices available that I should also consider?

Wassup, I used to live in Tokyo and theres never really been a "unlimited" data plan. They are pretty expensive compared to like Sprint but they offer a variety of different plans to match your usage. The best thing is to talk to the carrier rep directly. Both Docomo and Softbank are the same network. GSM+WCDMA. As far as english apps go they will work as-is. Its japanese appz that won't work on english phones. (kanji and phoenetic characters use a double size font) Roman characters only need half the space so it works great. The only thing is that you won't be able to change the system to english. Hmmm, I think. I may be wrong on that one. hehe.
You might actually wanna check out the Willcom Zero3. That phone is sweet! Although it is a PHS network. Not compatible with anything outside Japan.

I work for T-mobile UK and trying to find MMS settings for phones we dont do is a nightmare!!! Ive looked on the forum and cannot find the settings.
I can connect to the internet fine using:
APN: general.t-mobile.uk
username= user
password= one2one
I want to set up MMS on the XDA 2 for T-mobile UK. I need to know the following:
Server Name
Gateway
Server Address
(and also anything else relevant to setting up the XDA2 with the T-mobile UK network)
If anyone can solve my problem I will give them a PERMANENT 50% cut in their T-mobile UK line rental. (Its good being staff! )
Cheers, this is what I used, and it worked.
Here you go
Server name: t-MobileUK
Gateway: 149.254.211.10
Server Address: http://mmsc.t-mobile.co.uk:8002
For the gateway IP you may want to play around with putting a 0 in before the 10. Sometimes the MMS client does not like the zero so I did not post it. I use my XDA II in the uk and the states. Works like a charm. and I have T-Mobile! Let me know if it works for you.
Mikee
Thank you very much! It worked!
If you wish to have any T-mobile line rental cut, private message me with Your name, your address and postcode, your T-mobile UK number and your password for accessing your account (if you have one)
Ill do the rest then get back to you when Ive added the discounts.
Thank you.
Finally I can set up MMS on my XDA II.
I'm also a T-Mobile employee. Dont understand why T-Mobile dont bring out the XDA in the UK.....maybe thats why we have to get O2 ones and get them unlocked.
We are due to launch the MDA 3 soon. The reason that we didnt take the MDA or MDA2 on in the UK was because we didnt think that the UK market was ready for these sort of devices. Lets face it, joe bloggs has only just given up his nokia 3310 and is beginning to dabble in picture messaging!
I dont think ill upgrade to the MDA 3 tho. I dont see it as a significant upgrade. an integrated keyboard is nice but i have a snap-on keyboard that does the job.
Hi, i've been reading around a lot and i've got my wizard (cingular 8125) up to par real fast. I know everyone is using Skype but i've como across VoIpdiscount which offers free calls (landline) to USA all of europe and south america.
I want to know if any has set up a sip device or softphone on their Imate/htc etc to work with VoIpdiscount, or if you know of any other provider like this that offers free calls to usa south america and europe.
Thanks a lot for all the info.
The link is www.voipdiscount.com

You might want to e-mail them and see if they support other Softphones? And what the settings are.
I have Broadvoice and they have instructions on setting up your own device. If I have time today I want to set mine up to use SJphone.
Hi all - trying to find out if anyone has this running on WM6 - when I last upgraded to WM6 the application no longer worked - it connected to the push server ok but no emails arrived in one version of the app - in another, they arrived but were always blank.
Does anyone run this (horrible) application on WM6 and if so, does it work?
To be clear, this is Visto's pushmail application, sold as Vodafone Business Email in the UK and other countries - like Blackberry, and it is not the same as using direct push since Vodafone (at least) sell it on a flat rate contract of £5/month for as many pushed mails as you get.
Look forward to hearing if anyone has any experience.
A lot of people are having problems with this.

I live in Japan and I've been looking for a smartphone that could work on a network here.
I don't know much about phones, but I'd like to use a phone that can sync with outlook, has qwerty keyboard and perhaps can run some PC applications (if that's possible). Voice is secondary, I would even like an HTC shift if I could use it on an unlimited data plan.
Can anybody help a fellow gaijin? Those of you who live in Japan, what phones are you using?
Thank you!
Hey guys, I leaving to Japan tomorrow for a month. I was wondering if there were any apps or accessories you guys would recommend for me to take.
I am going to rent a SIM from softbank over there but will not have intenet access on the phone except when I have wifi.
Oh yeah, I have a Fuze.
yeah, there are some apps i'd recommend...
first, install a japanese font, and an input panel, too
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=445550
second, the softbank email client, cause without it.... well its pretty self-eplanatory isnt it? (this one's major because softbank is using their own kind of service instead of SMS/normal email, nevermind this if you're not going to communicate with japanese people)

then there is EBPocket for all you dictionary needs ^^
http://www31.ocn.ne.jp/~h_ishida/EBPocket.html
and last but not least, if you want GPS navigation in japan, use Garmin Mobile XT... its the only program with coverage of the whole country (@others : yeah yeah, i know, mapking, but mapking only has a map for tokyo city area, bummer...)
A language translator and Japanese-to-English dictionary.
