Newbie question: What is G3, G4, etc - and how do I tell?

Hello - This forum is a great resource; unfortunately the wiki portion isn't quite ready yet...
I've done a forum search on this topic (using the "search" function), but it wasn't very useful. Google was more helpful - I've learned that apparently G3 or G4 has to do with the kind of flash memory used on a HTC Prophet.
How do I tell if my device uses G3 or G4 flash memory?
I just picked up a Dopod 818 Pro last week. It was brand new in the store, but I'm not sure when it was actually produced. The case features the newer, easier to read style Dopod logo (as opposed to the logo that looked like a bunch of circles with some dots above or below).
It seems to have the most basic/early ROM version there is - 1.0.13.21 WWE.
The ExtROM version is: 1.00.13.102. The ROM date is 11/24/05.
From what I'm reading here, I think my device would benefit greatly from a firmware upgrade.
To do that, I need to know - is this a G4 or G3 device? Do I need to CID unlock this device in order to put new firmware on it?

Hi Dan, if your SPL ends in .000 you have a G3 chip, if it ends .001 then you have G4. softreset you device to see the IPL and SPL version.
You will need to CID unlock your device before changing you ROM.

as i know, you don't have to CID unlock your device. You only have to change the Romupdateulility.exe (extract the downloaded .EXE file with winrar) with this file

Please advise what's the fuss about G3 and G4, is G4 better than G3. I mean, if other things are the same, what would you choose G3 or G4? what other advantages and disadvantages?

Flash ROM for Prophet

Hello people.
Yesterday i tried to upgrade my i-mate JAMin to WM6 but i couldn't do it.
anyway, because i couldn't upgrade it to WM6, after i upgrade to 2.40 WWE when i arrived at home i've tryed to upgrade to 2.13_Portuguese_ROM...
Here was when the problem started.
When updrade started, at 1% the problem ocurred... message ERROR.
From what i've read I need a flash ROM, I'm desperate...
Can any one help to find the flash ROM and how to recover my PPC?

Again, would people please read through the forum carefully before starting a new thread and ask the same questions over and over again. It is not that I am mean (just getting old), because any new thread will take time to read. Why not the person who need answer to read first and save other people's time. I found this forum contains so much information that most problems people generally ask are well covered one way or the other.

Starting to answering your questions:
- My i-mate is G3
-  ERROR [320~328] : INVALID COMMAND
These errors seldom occur. However, if one of these errors occur, it could not be recovered and the device had to be sent back to the customer service center. In this case, you have to flash a new ROM code.
About the ROM 2.40..., i'm confused and since i can't read my i-mate i don't know the correct version but it was downloaded here in this forum.

look for RUU_Prophet_220734_2207114_024721_NVID.exe you can find it here
then unlock CID see the WIKI how to
and then install any ROM you want

I try to unlock CID, but the link ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Prophet/pdamobiz.com_downgrade_and_unlockcid.rar is not working.
Can any one put it on working?

Right now my i-mate is Cid Unlocked and working with WM6 Prophet_4.0.0.0.3_PV just fine.
I´m Going to try and explore this (Beautifull) Rom and post my feedback.

As I said before, the feedback for this rom is just... GREAT.
Better than this only if it was in Portuguese (for me, off Corse), because in these rom theres no Portuguese GPRS configurations.

After upgrade to TNT 4.0, i still use wm5. Add 1 question.

This is the new question I want to ask. (13 Aug 4.37pm London)
As mentioned in the Wizzard-wiki, there is no free way to unlock G4.
BUT !!!!! today, I just did an update (look at my signature). First of all flash the Radio and ExtRom. Then use aWizzard, enable Rapi (e),
UNLOCK CID (u) and last write new OS (w).
In the Unlock CID phase, I finally get something like "your device is successfully CID unlocked" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! does this mean that my G4 is unlocked and is it the same as we pay 20 pounds to use IMEI number to lock the CID (as mentioned in wiki)??????????????????????????????

I am using a CID locked O2 XDA Mini S. It took me about 6 minute to upgrade to TNT4.0, but after that the device rebooted. And then the old wm5 shows up...... (2.21.4.1)
what's going on here?????????????

But I have been reading the wiki many times. Being a foreigner, I don't quite understand many terms and abbreviations in the wiki. After reading the describtion from the TNT 4.0, i know that it is safe to flash it to my O2 MiniS.
But I still don't know why it doesn't work. Here i want to ask 2 questions.
I have read the "how to flash ANY rom to a CID Locked device". 1 question I want to ask is that Any rom includes a rom like TNT4.0, right? I.E. I can flash TNT to my CID locked O2 MiniS, right?
2nd question is that, I noticed that many posts mentioned that they will need an official rom as the base. Where can I find any Official roms for the MiniS. are the following 3 the ONLY OFFICIAL roms for O2 Mini S? I apprecaite any help. Thank you.

You need to use the shell tool to flash to a G4 CID locked device - follow the instructions.

Does that mean that I can flash any rom to use the shell tool, like I can flash TNT4.0 or Faria etc. ?

The answer to EVERY Question and problem you are having is:
Unlock CID your device!
For Crist sake!
You CAN NOOOOOOOOOT put any rom in your device until you have done that, and no matter whatever anyone else says , just do it, and your problems will go away...
Some poeple just dont do what the instructions tell you to do, and then fill the forum with repeated issues...

Man, you scaried me. But there is a post saying that I can flash any rom without CID Unlock, right? Just don't have money to do the cid unlock.

According to your signature you have got a G4 model. Follow the instructions in the stickies about upgrade of a G4 model.....

I just want to make sure that in theory I can flash to any roms according to thread "how to flash any rom with a cid locked"

As most of these ROM do not incl. IPL/SPL or the radio you may want to check whether your IPL/SPL and radio version work with the respective ROMs first.
If I remember correctly they require 2.x or higher IPL/SPL. But, check for yourself.

BTW what kind of Chinese support you are referring to?

The best I've used for Chinese support is CE-star specially made for WM6 release from the ppda forums. Penpower works like the transcriber for Chinese.
Monster Chinese, I have never gotten to work correctly. You can't uninstall it too.

I forgot the name of the forum, but you can do a search on Leies edition of CE-star.

Idealy, I want to use the English OS system but with full Chinese support. e.g. I can install Chinese software, browse Chinese web-site etc.
But just now, I flashed a Chinese OS system. Quit happy with it now, though maybe later I will try to find a way to fullfill my ideal system above.

If you don't need to enter Chinese characters but just have your Wizard to show them, the easiest way would be to install a cab with the Chinese font set.
The cab is somewhere here on the forum...

Are you sure? I think this thing works similar as PC. Not only we need the font, but the encoding thing (like uni-code or something). Personally, I don't think your suggestion will work. If you find such thread, please do show it to me. It will be highly appreciated

I have a locked tmobile mda... I forget what I need to do b4 I can flash a new rom... I think all I have to do is CID unlock it right? But I forget how. Any help would be great

Yes the fastest one way to figure this out again is to read the stickies labeled unlocking and UPGRADING. That is usually pretty helpful.

hi ive tryd to up to wm6 but no luck ive read all the info on how to doit downloaded loads of software still no good ive managed to put wizard love rom on it for now but cant get round the cid unlocking then how to up aput wm6 on
ive tryd it but dont want to kill the phone could some one make an ruu of wm6 then upload it or dont it work that way

Which is your device, a G3 or G4,how come we can tell,untill and unless you do not post the vital data of your phone,no one can suggest you any help without knowing the version of your phone.always post the data.

which DOC chip version you got,a G3 or G4 ? to verify post your IPL/SPL...? or download the WST Tool,install and run it and post the report to determine if it's a G3 or G4 device.You can download the WST tool here :-

If it's a G3,it's required to first CID unlock the device and than upgrade to wm6.

i made my SPL to 2.21.olip
what i have to do next? can i install a wm6 now perhaps Jaguar?
or what i have to do now? when i try BlackDiamond 3.1 Touch.rar i get error 300 invalid update tool and other wm6 dont work too...

If you read and understood the HardSPL thread in the G4 forum, you shouldn't be asking this. That thread is clear (IMO) how HardSPL works.
But put simply, yes, if you have HardSPL installed, then you can flash a custom rom like Jaguar or somesuch on your G4 just like the G3 users do. But you need to understand that you may have to switch the RUU that is used (again, that is discussed in the HardSPL thread in the G4 forum).
Please read and understand the HardSPL thread though before you wind up bricking your device.

u need to find the ruu mun file its laying around in the g4 forum im using a g4 myself so i have dealt with the process involved so if any questions just pm me or ask away in the g4 forum
