smallest 3g compatable pda - General Topics

I use the exec, jasjar to surf and email while working away,
however due to my job role its unsutiable to carry around druing the day
can anyone please offer any advice for a pda that i can pop my tmob uk sim in and still get online via 3g
i cant find a small 3g comptable pda,is there such a device around at this time
thank you very much

Well shortly there will be the HTC TyTN, also called Vario II amongst other names. Look up Hermes in the wiki. There's a thread in this forum you may be interested in. Or just goodle for TyTN.

Thank you just done that,im amazed that due to the amount of smaller genral 3g phones(lg,nokia, motorola)
that we dont have more 3g enabled smaller units, like a compact with 3g.
I think there's deffo a market for a smaller device that has basic phone and net services (push mail, web browsing) and less of the other pda functions
altho the TyTN looks great i must say, wonder how it fares against say the exec

If you don't mind the symbian Os then there is the Motorola a1000.

Looking for buying an HTC handset but which one???

Hi,
I am a previous user of an HTC Blueangel and a SPV C500 when I was in France then I moved to UK where I choose a Blackberry 8700g but I am not feeling really happy with it.
I mean the Blackberry is a great handset in term of reliability and it is doing what it is supposed to. But it is not really a flexible. In fact, I found that the software range is really narrow and expensive. Also, I am missing the use of a stylus. However, the jog dial is really great.
Since I can use the MS Push mail with my company email, I am really thinking to switch back to a Pocket PC phone.
By the past, I really liked my SPV C500 but I don't think I can go for a Smartphone now, I think it won't be practical for writing email and so on.
To summarize I would be happy to have some people point of view of which handset would be the best for the following requirements (MS Push Email, I am not playing game, I am not using a GPS, I am using a Samsung bluetooth headset, listen to some music sometimes and watch some video sometimes, WIFI, sliding keyboard would be appreciated, possibility to use Skype or other VOIP system if possible.....).
Any help is much appreciated.
Finally, I have some newbie question:
- Is anybody using his Pocket PC with T-Mobile Web n walk in UK?
- If the device is not AKU is it possible to upgrade it to have this functionality (maybe flash firmware)?
- Does web n walk allow the use of MSN on T-Mobile UK Web n walk?
- For the MS Push Mail is it enough to have a data plan (like Web n Walk)?
Sorry for the long post. But I am a bit lost.
Thank you very much for your help.
Julien
I think the new TyTn / Hermes will be perfect for you.
Sliding keyboard, AKU 3.0 with all it's goodies, WIFI G, BT 2.0 400MHZ processor and 2MP camera as a bonus (+ VGA camera for video calls).
I am not on T-MBILE but I can answer a couple of your questions:
1) All WM5 devices manufactured today come with at least AKU 2.0 newer devices come with AKU 3.0 and up. Some older devices get updates from the manufacturer but not all.
2) All you need for push mail is internet access (GPRS / UMTS / WIFI) and an Exchange server on the other side.

Oops. My mistake, somehow I remembered seeing it with the green windows screen.
Still I liked it from the brief experience I had with it.
How is it working out for you?
The T-Mobile version of the Hermes is the MDA Vario II
Just in case you didn't know...
Thank you guys for the information.
Indeed I think I will go for the Hermes. The only problem might be the budget.
What about he MDA Vario (i.e. Qtek 9100) is it good? I am a bit worried since the processor is only 200Mhz.
I will try to see if I can trade my blackberry against a Hermes or another one (with complement maybe).

It's pretty good - see for example my game reviews, where I also elaborate on the given title's playability on the Wizard.
hi julien
check ebay and see what price you can get for your old phones.better than trading in !

Get the Vario II (Not the Vario)
Vario = Wizard = 200MHz
Vario II = Hermes = 400MHz

I am MAD T-Mobile has upgrade to WM6.0

T-Mobile website has the WM 6.0 update for the DASH but not the MDA.
ok and ur mad.. why?
So please - lock in, download and share.
lol
i went to the site and the only update is for tmobile dash. thats all i saw. so please let me know if i am wrong
Thats correct. Windows mobile 6 will only be offered for upgrade for the T-mobile dash.
As we all know, the MDA has been discontinued and will be replaced with "the wing"
The wing will come with wm6 preinstalled. In my opinion, its a worthless phone. It's the SAME processor speed, and there are no tactile buttons on front for messaging or internet. instead, the messaging button on the side and there is no more browser button.
Sure it has a 2MP camera... but NO flash!
One of the "perks" is that it has a spring loaded slide out keyboard.... another opporunity for something to break if u ask me.
But does it really matter if t-mobile doesn't have wm6? All the great chefs will be able to get their hands on the official wm6 and tweak it for us anyway. Standard roms are horrid. And the unofficial wm6 roms by the very talented ichefs in these forums are working close to flawless

what roms should i take then? and are they build on a wm6 base of an wm5 with wm6 looks?
no the ROMs are are legit WM6, not WM5 with WM6 looks. the MDA has been discontinued. HTC, nor t-mobile will be giving a WM6 upgrade. I've been running WM6 on my MDA for a month though. Just do that.
RADIO NEEDED for MDA WM6, t-mob, WM6 needed

The MOST SERIOUS problem with all of WM6's posted here is the phone radio driver.
It would be *REALLY* great if someone is able to adapt the radio in this to the wizard wm6. It seems that the biggest weakness in the WM6 hacks posted here is the "radio." Thus far, only 2.19 is reported to be at all reliable (all others tested are reported to miss calls). I confirmed missed calls on 2.40 yesterday (SF Bay Area, t-mob, NTS vanilla).
But 2.19 has nasty problems with signal acquisition, especially when the signal is weak.
If this new phone has the same processor (OMAP), then maybe the radio will work, or could be hacked to work, on MDA hardware??

Quote from link - The HTC Wing S730 is powered by a Samsung SC32442 400Mhz processor, 128MB ROM, 64MB, and has a QVGA LCD screen, 3G and HSDPA support. There is also a secondary camera for video calls.
It seems to have a 200% faster 32-bit processor...
Are you sure it doesn't have tactile buttons? All I've seen is artist renderings and those are never exactly perfect.
Are you sure that it doesn't have a flash? I've yet to see even an artist rendering of the back side of the phone.
Where are you getting this information?

hmm I haven't had that issue as my calls seem to be coming through fine. Once the Wing is released, since it has roughly the same hardware as the MDA, it should be easy to "port" the t-mobile WM6 ROM for the MDA or at least the radio.

Wish I could help, but I don't have the expertise with these to extract a radio. Hope someone else can give you a hand. "Nottoosmart" in the US has done a great job in cleaning things up and providing a reliable wm6. I don't believe he has expertise in the internals, but he appears to be very knowledgeable in putting a system together and removing troublesome "extras." Perhaps if you can get him a copy of the new radio he might be able to extract and test it.
Right now the RADIO is a huge problem. All of the hacks and "cooked" roms are worthless if the phone doesn't answer or work right.

Universal + WM6 supports HSDPA?

Hi all,
Is it possible for Universal to support HSDPA by upgrading to WM6?
I thought Universal can support HSDPA just like Hermes... My Universal was delivered just 2 weeks ago, and I'm migrating my data from Hermes to Universal just now. After setting up everything, I found this problem...
Any suggestion for this situation?? (I love big screen and useful keyboard that the reason why I changed from Hermes to Universal.)

No, it won't support it ever.
I'm afraid different hardware is required for HSPDA.
Sorry.
Psi
And I'm planning switching to Hermes!
You won't ever have HSDPA with this machine.
The question though is whether you really need HSDPA or now. Apart from using your PPC as a modem you should be on the safe side for most browsing / downloading senarios. The QVGA resolution of the Hermes makes the device a whole lot less usable for many things like web browsing, PDF / Office files (Excel at 320*240 = not fun!) and ebooks. That said the Hermes ain't half bad either of course - I just don't get HTCs policy to not include a VGA screen in such a high end (/ priced) device. Guess it will remain their secret forever...

well there would be no sense in putting a VGA display on (guessing; may be wrong) 2,8" display of Hermes.
Thanks all. I'll return to use Hermes then.
By the way, what is the option for people who need mobile phone with qwerty Keyboard, VGA screen, VM6 and HSDPA??
Another mobile? or Modify universal?!
None at the moment.
Btw, the upside of a QVGA device is the smaller size. And QVGA devices are very much usable with web browsing using Opera Mini.. Not to mention that you won't need a stylus for most QVGA devices now.
But if you do excel sheets a lot. Stick to VGA.

New polaris, not that impressed (ex wizard)

Hi , got my new orbit 2 (polaris) the other day and im not that impressed by it as yet.
I came from using my trusty vario(wizard) and it doesnt seem (as yet) much quicker than that.
I know it has built in gps, radio etc. But i cant put me finger on it why it hasnt impressed me much. i played a bit of video on it and it was a bit jumpy, also scroll is a bit iffy.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what it can do and do better than my old phone?
Or what to use to make it a pleasure to use.
Thanks.

Believe me..it could be one of most impressif pocketphone's out there..but the only problem with this device is that HTC didn't do there homework that good and put this device to soon on the market.
But when the new firmware (with drivers) come's online it will be one of the finest pocketphone's out there at the moment.
The only think for us is to pray that HTC will make the firmware with the drivers, otherwise it will go into be books as a slow and bad preforming device 4-ever and HTC will loose a lot of trusty customers!
But like the other also said..it's being sad in a lot off topics now..so lets use the other threads for the complenning
i agree. i bought mine a week ago. the touch cruise and i am not that impress coming from a tmobile mda aka wizard. i still use my wizard. love it but cruise slow. internet is slow. features are wack. the only good thing is the radio but i dnt listen to radio and tomtom navigation. i live in nyc i use the subway so not that usefull to me. htc better come good or its apple for me.

This is exactly what I'm thinking...HTC really messed this wicked phone up....Gonna wait for the Xperia or Samsung i900.
You aren't getting drivers for it. You are getting a software patch that helps fix a few things like scrolling and some basic touch screen functionality, nothing to do with video.
unfortunately, if you want to watch movies you have to convert them yourself and spend the time doing it, then you can have some fun with high quality movies or shows.
i will think twice before I buy my next handset. I don't expect the most amazing device in the world, but I don't like to be mislead in advertising.
Funny, I find my Cruise does everything I ask of it. I find it an improvement in almost every way over the KJAM (OC'ed to 247mhz), and the Treo 750.

I've just installed Coreplayer .....runs pathetic....picture hardly moves when running a 480MB avi.
Camera...you can forget that....never seen such rubbish...I'm sure the image quality is good...nobody should have to wait that long to take a picture.
I have a UK O2 Orbit 2....got rid of the O2 taskbar icon (after reading it was a memory hogger).
Installed :
HTC Home Screen...
HTC Theme (black) tsk file 102KB vs 200+KB for the 02 Theme.
Skype
Core Player 1.1.1
Opera 9.33
OTO
Calculator skin
WMP Skin
Advanced Configuration
PocketCM Keyboard (one of the best touch apps....never knew I could touch type that fast)
I for one am willing help in what it takes to have this phone running to at least 2/3 of its potential. Compared to my friend's Hermes...thats faster....got suckered into touch and WM6 Pro....
Where as touch v1 is a decent attempt (O2 just messed it up) I'm sure V2 only get better...Microsoft really need to integrate touch into the OS..(whats with the small up arrow next to keyboard selection on the taskbar...with so much empty space around it?....saving on real estate ?).
To me this OS looks/feels the same as the one I had on my SPV C500 years ago...(have you seen the WM6 original calculator !) 3rd party can only do so much.
Well I think HTC better watch out....to sell an expensive phone half finished...well what you say...advertising SOLD IT. But theres a few phones coming out soon and if they utilize the hardware and have half decent software then HTC will have to up the ante...should be interesting.
At the moment we will have to wait for what improvements HTC brings to this COOL LOOKING phone.
Sorry...I'm just a bit disapointed.

Aside from the video driver issues (which BTW hasn't bothered me that much), what software do expect HTC to ship with the device? HTC has done a good job integrating TouchFlo and HTC today into WM. It sounds to me like your complaints software-wise are more directed to MS rather than HTC.

Since both devices are the same performance and feature-wise your only decision is whether you require a physical keyboard on the Tytn II.

but why does it seem as slow as my wizard? I thought the processor was supposed to be much faster? And the scrolling is finnicky to say the least.
i just downloaded coreplayer 1.3.0. whats so special about core player?
it's the player which supports most formats
I have the Orbit 2, and when I first tried using Internet Explorer I was very disappointed with the extremely slow and jerky scroll, if you could call it 'scroll'. Now that I have managed to install SPB Pocket Plus with the 'Smart Scroll' feature enabled, I'm now happy with that aspect. I haven’t tried video on it yet, but my thoughts now are that I do like the device, especially because of its form factor and looks. Before the Orbit 2 I had the SPV M3100 (Hermes), prior to this I had the SPV C500, and prior to that I had the original windows Smartphone, the Orange SPV.
For me, the Orbit is a step in the right direction, but I will be a little disappointed if video is unusable.
Overall I am happy with my Cruise (I have gotten a sim-free version). Apparently a number of people complain about speed, and I have noticed that this is also related to owners of Cruise who are on the O2 network. My guess is O2 loaded their version with useless software which reduces performance.
Regarding the video issue, I user Coreplayer 1.2 (coreplayer is a must), I encode my videos in QVGA resolution and they seem fine to me. True, you won't be able to take an existing DVD quality rip and expect Cruise to show it well, even in Coreplayer.
Performance-wise, Cruise could probably do a little better given its specs, but overall, I still think it is a very good and practival device.
Hopefully video issue will be addressed, I am not 100% confident it will be fully resolved though. Though the device works fine for me, it is quite upsetting to know that its hardware is not fully utilised...
As my closing statement have a look at the text below, from

=-=-=-=--=-=
Microsoft is working to fix the whole WM platform. Here's how:
Even when using a super sluggish WinMo phone, it's less an example of a manufacturer not meeting the minimum requirements for RAM, ROM and CPU power, and more a problem of software which has not been optimized to run on it. This is often the service provider's fault. For example, two phones with the same 400MHz processor can be totally different depending on how much optimization the provider decides to do. When you're using a slow phone, blame the provider.
On the same token, the Windows Mobile OS team actually does set a minimum hardware requirement for the "core" features of the OS to make sure the user experience is a good one, but the minimum-requirement bar may be set too low. When companies add apps on top of the core, things start to wobble. Product manager Derek Snyder told me that Microsoft will raise the bar for minimum requirements to a level where phones can be loaded with more software without slowing down the most basic of tasks (e.g. sliding open the AT&T Tilt from portrait to landscape mode).

HTC HD2

Hello guys,
Unfortunatly 80% of internet tells HTC LEO (HTC HD2) will come out with android.
And 20% of internet tells it will come out with WMobile.
Unfortunately I think Wmobile is the truth. Bcuz preorders are showing an Wmobile interface on the pictures.
My question is, can we put android 1.5 or higher on these devices?
Peace
Fortunatly, it'll be WM
Hi, I don't know where you heard that HD2 will come out with Android but from the first beginning, it has always been clear that HD2 will be running WM.
Don't wanna troll, but I would say .... FORTUNATLY !!! Just to show people what a windows mobile 6.5 device with capacitive display and snapdragon processor can do !!
Thomas
The confusion may stem from....
the fact that the Snapdragon "platform" is going to be used for many devices, there are a few nice previews of 1ghz processor equipped Android phones out there.

If you ask me its all good, the more they sell, the lower the unit cost, maybe we will see cheaper WM / Android on Snapdragon in the not too distant.
Also, the 1.5Ghz Snapdragon appears to be in the pipeline too.... cant wait.
MS
Where
I really wasn`t joking guys, maybe I get other links than you in Netherlands.
But most sites still claim its android build.
Anyways, I aint got nothing against WMobile.
I just want to know if there are already people trying to port it.
Thanks in advance.
Peace

Htc hd2 - gps
Hi,
Does anyone know what kind of GPS the HTC HD2 has (gps-enabled processor with internal antena or gps-enabled processor with a-gps support) and if it is capable of running software applications like iGo, Navigon or TomTom?
Yes, it is pretty confusing, but correct me if I'm wrong:
1. When reading specs of a cell phone and says it has/supports "A-GPS", I assume that that phone has a gps-capable processor but locking onto satellites it is being done through the Internet connection (it probably connects to a site that will tell the phone the position of the satellites) and it does not have a dedicated "com" port and "baud" rate. The navigation applications are simple and cheap (mostly based on Google maps). A good example would be the iPhone that has A-GPS only. A dedicated navigation software such as iGo or Navigon (even Tomtom) would search for a "com" port and "baud" rate so it won't work with A-GPS-enabled phones.
2. When the specs. of a phone says Internal GPS or Dedicated GPS, I assume that that phone not only has a gps-enabled processor (like above) but also has an internal antena that will help the device to lock onto satellites without Internet support (a-gps). A dedicated navigation software (iGo, Navigon, Tomtom) will work on this device because it has a "com" port and "baude" rate required for those applications to run. So, if you are in the desert, you don't have cell phone signal but enough battery, the gps will guide you out of there. Shortly put, with GPS enabled phones (not A-GPS or Q-GPS, etc) you don't rely on Internet or network signal (signal triangulation) and you can run professional navigation softwares.
So, what kind of GPS the HTC HD2 has?
I have read that this replaces the Thoth 100 but PDADB.NET still shows the THOTH coming out this quarter. Is the THOTH still alive as a separate device?
The HD2 should have a real GPS chip. as in Internal Antenna. Will take a heck of a time to lock to the satellites, tough, 10 minutes at first run. That's why A-GPS is useful (Quick GPS).
Well Said. WM forever!

Well said Thomas! Also to all others, the best thing about any windows mobile is that you can always see and check what is happening in the background or what the CAB's contents are (meaning super customisable), Android, i-phone and many others are data collecting freaks who wanna know what populations are thinking and doing. In my opinion, windows mobile Os is number 1 and always will be (check whats on ya pc.lol) second is Symbian Os! I'm sure all other mobile Os's appart from windows mobile has developed themselves using Symbian ideas!!
