Hi,
I am a previous user of an HTC Blueangel and a SPV C500 when I was in France then I moved to UK where I choose a Blackberry 8700g but I am not feeling really happy with it.
I mean the Blackberry is a great handset in term of reliability and it is doing what it is supposed to. But it is not really a flexible. In fact, I found that the software range is really narrow and expensive. Also, I am missing the use of a stylus. However, the jog dial is really great.
Since I can use the MS Push mail with my company email, I am really thinking to switch back to a Pocket PC phone.
By the past, I really liked my SPV C500 but I don't think I can go for a Smartphone now, I think it won't be practical for writing email and so on.
To summarize I would be happy to have some people point of view of which handset would be the best for the following requirements (MS Push Email, I am not playing game, I am not using a GPS, I am using a Samsung bluetooth headset, listen to some music sometimes and watch some video sometimes, WIFI, sliding keyboard would be appreciated, possibility to use Skype or other VOIP system if possible.....).
Any help is much appreciated.
Finally, I have some newbie question:
- Is anybody using his Pocket PC with T-Mobile Web n walk in UK?
- If the device is not AKU is it possible to upgrade it to have this functionality (maybe flash firmware)?
- Does web n walk allow the use of MSN on T-Mobile UK Web n walk?
- For the MS Push Mail is it enough to have a data plan (like Web n Walk)?
Sorry for the long post. But I am a bit lost.
Thank you very much for your help.
Julien
I think the new TyTn / Hermes will be perfect for you.
Sliding keyboard, AKU 3.0 with all it's goodies, WIFI G, BT 2.0 400MHZ processor and 2MP camera as a bonus (+ VGA camera for video calls).
I am not on T-MBILE but I can answer a couple of your questions:
1) All WM5 devices manufactured today come with at least AKU 2.0 newer devices come with AKU 3.0 and up. Some older devices get updates from the manufacturer but not all.
2) All you need for push mail is internet access (GPRS / UMTS / WIFI) and an Exchange server on the other side.

Oops. My mistake, somehow I remembered seeing it with the green windows screen.
Still I liked it from the brief experience I had with it.
How is it working out for you?
The T-Mobile version of the Hermes is the MDA Vario II
Just in case you didn't know...
Thank you guys for the information.
Indeed I think I will go for the Hermes. The only problem might be the budget.
What about he MDA Vario (i.e. Qtek 9100) is it good? I am a bit worried since the processor is only 200Mhz.
I will try to see if I can trade my blackberry against a Hermes or another one (with complement maybe).

It's pretty good - see for example my game reviews, where I also elaborate on the given title's playability on the Wizard.
hi julien
check ebay and see what price you can get for your old phones.better than trading in !

Would if I could - unfortunately the ROMs based on the new source don't support it... yet...
Still, +1 for RealVGA
I have Qtek9000 (VGA). Does it "Real VGA" or not?
If I'd use trueVGA mode I'd need magnifying glasses... the pixels of this device are sooo small.. of course when I'm sitting and browsing I'm setting the font size to a size between truevga and qvga mode...

What PPC do you have? What screen resolution?
Well.. as you can see, we are in the universal forum here And i got an Qtek 9000, like you do.
The normal (base, standard) resolution is QVGA on a (hardware) VGA LCD with 640x480.
There are several tools where you can add this true VGA mode, just check some topics here or use the search.
--edit--
typo
I would if only my favorite games would work on True VGA.
Most games still assume a QVGA mode. The screen and stylus isn't aligned when playing.
Once I changed my my universal to true vga, I never want to change it to qvga,
hello , i got a question , is jasjas in normal mode is VGA or qVGA ?
because members here are talking about changing back t qvga ,and that is impossible in universal , point me if im wrong ,
QVGA = 320 x 240
VGA = 640 x 480 (universal )
real VGA = i dont know ,can ayone tell me ?
and with i once changed to Real VGA ,but i dont want it again becauseafter reading and replying one sms i had a headache ,very small fonts
goooooooooooood day
Chalk another one up for True VGA...
I had True VGA on Hemi's ROM but since my phone went in for repair and that got wiped off I've upgraded to the latest version of Ivan's Midget v3, which unfortunately doesn't support it , just hoping that Midget gets around to modding it sometime soon because there are a few features on this ROM which I would really like to use but I'd really like to use it in True VGA!
Edit:
As I understand it OzVGA had to be modded to work on WM6 in both Helmi's and Midget's ROMS (Helmi WM6 1.1 and Midget V0.1). Hopefully Midget can get around to this one of these fine days - he's probably busy debugging or building better functionality into Midget V1.0 though...
What program do you use to switch TrueVGA? OzVGA? If it is possible to "include" this option in the ROM?

Note for the ROM developers.
See im confused? Is true VGA just VGA? Or True VGA and VGA different?

Yes they are different.. it's because of the higher dpi (dots per inch) of True VGA.
If you may notice.. VGA and QVGA screens devices pretty much look the same right? I mean, The size of fonts, icons, taskbar, etc... are the same.
But if you use True VGA, it changes the the screen dpi to a true and correct VGA dpi setting. It will fully utilize the 640x480 screen. It's like, imagine your PC 14" monitor... set it to a 640x480 resolution (it's not possible with WinXP and later unless you go to safe mode, but it's possible for Win9x/ME) and make it smaller down to 3.6". Now that's True VGA.
true VGA user here since my ipaq hx4700 days.
I dont use true vga. I have just forced adobe reader to true vga(via tweaks2k2). The ROM which I m using offers true vga in IE.
Heya, im a former universal owner, now onto the Athena. Given that the universal is the only VGA device with cooked WM6 ROMS at the moment im just wondering, is it correct that WM6 supports True VGA Mode? So no more stuffing around with tweaks and 3rd party apps etc?
There just seems to be some confussion out there as to if WM6 supports a VGA resolution and I thought you guys would know...
cheers in advance.

I myself am using Helmi's original WM6 with True VGA. I haven't found another ROM that I'd be willing to try right now. So far, I don't see myself trying another ROM until a newer WM6 build supports it.
True VGA is an absolute must for me.
Unfortunately my friends, this is the end of an era
Most of our legendary developers (JWright, Midget, Leo, Beasty, Helmi) now have different devices, or looking at a new one anyway.
Hopefully our other developers and cookers can continue their work, but it is unlikely that we will see new ROMs and completely new builds of WM6 as we have seen in the past.
I would ask you that you always read the wiki first, and that you don't clog the threads asking developers to release new versions

Un-standard Screen:
There are a couple of other devices with this (so Microsoft must have a solution). But your right, there are a lot of poorly written applications out there.
Processor:
Although the clock speed is slower, it has a better version of the ARM commands (ARM V6 instead of the Uni's ARM V5TE). Also, it has a dedicated graphics processor (instead of the Uni's shared CPU\GPU)
Screen Rotation:
Haven't actually heard anything about the screen rotation (do you have a link?). But yes, if its more complex then its more likely to fail
SD Card:
Unfortunately I do have to agree with you on this. Micro-SD is available upto 12Gb (http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/sandisk-crams-12gb-onto-a-microsdhc-card/) it is *a lot* more expensive than standard SD
So, if the Omni is not a good replacement, and the Universal is growing old - (I can't believe I'm about to ask this question, I love my Uni!) what can we switch to??
I really hope Mo3ulla & Ranju will come up something good and stable and hopefully final (bugs free, welll almost...) ...

You are absolutely right, we are really not benifited from the v5...v6 ARM commands. Eventually I'm sure that the shared xscale graphics is more than enough (unless you're using your uni as a playstation).
Hi guys,
Just to let you know I'm still around with the Uni.
I have bought a Kaiser for the wife, and will be spending a bit of time over in the Kaiser forum, but have not given up on Rom Dev for the Uni, and have not found anything yet that makes me want to retire my Uni.
It will however be quite a while before I get round to a new Rom release.
Don't forget we still have Mamaich around too, as long as we have the "god" the Uni will continue to improve and expand on it's capabilities, features and functionality.
Cheers,
Beasty
Ditto Beasty - I'm not jumping ship anytime soon.
The only weakness I can see with the Uni is the 64mb ram, and that can always be fixed.

Your words were a beam of light through the clouds. In fact, uni is the best PDA till now any one could obtain it. I have had uni since its firts release at the end of 2005, but due to an accident i converted to many other PDAs, wizard, profit and Tytn. In a lucky day i found a person who repaired my Uni, I was too happy to return back to Uni enjoying all what i have lost with other PDAs, the big and high resolution screen, the full keyboard with dedicated 0-9 numbers keys, a tab and big buttons. with the angeled screen i can use the keyboard to dial numbers easly (in wm6 of course) i seldom use the touch screen now to dial, beleive me i have the sensation the I got freed again after a long time of constriction with other PDAs.
But unfortnately there is some cons with uni without them i"ll never think to convert away from uni for more couples of years:
- The problems in radio:
1- the hanging that may occur when dialling, where the screen is stuck on dialing but not actually dialing and u cannot end call. You can go away from phone and use PDA but u must soft reset to use phone again.
2- this occured only once with me, where many persons called me but the phone didn'r ring nor notify the call by any means, every thing is ok with the PDA, i can use it normally but the GSM module is not working at all.
3- The uni may hang with incoming calls, it will hang with the incoming call screen popup without notifyin me, and i discover it when come to use Uni.
- The deficient vedio call in wm6 (it is not so important, i don't use it for routine calls)
- The incompetability of VGA screen with many new enhancements from HTC for devices starting from touch series (HTC album, touchflo technology, HTC home,.....). But this is not so important also, as there is other sotware that colud compensate such as Spb pocket plus 4+.
I don't know much about Omni, but from ur opinions about it, i think it is not a huge jump from Uni, and there is no need to convert to it from lovely Uni.

Well said Beasty! Thanks for uplifting 'downed' spirits!
Not only Mamaich, we also have The Darkforces Team just in case people had forgotten that most of the new ROM builds floating around came from them, remember the leaked ROM a few months back?
I think our Uni has some juice left even for WM6.1 & the latest enhancements available for her younger VGA sister Athena! The 128Mb RAM hack by Mamaich will prove it's worth in the long run.
As always, a new Uni era will arrive to replace the last one!

Forgive me if I unintentionally overlooked you Sir as one of the ROM builders!
There it goes fellow Uni owners, our own mod itself has WM6.1.1 ROM confirmed running in Uni. I'm curious when it's going to be made "public"
My girlfriend's the one using my Uni now, and believe it or not, she's using a WM5 ROM... you know why? Because we need video call.
Ever since last year, I've been very active here in the Universal thread, always hoping for a WM6 for Uni that fully supports video call... alas.. that day never came. Although there have been other improvements for the Uni.. but none of them really concerns me. I've already had a TyTN and now a Nike.. looks like my girlfriends Uni is going to get replaced with a Nike too (since this device is just too damn sexy ). The only thing I missed would be the VGA screen (although the great features of Opera Mini, full TouchFlo support, and almost complete apps compatibility for QVGA made me miss the VGA a lot less since VGA always gives me problems with app compatibility).
We have to face it. The Universal is still being used and modded until today (much like the PlayStation2), but it's era has already ended.

Hey Davince,
Long time since we've seen you around my friend......
I have to disagree with you my friend, as far as Business productivity tool, nothing on the market has come close to the Universal......... it is the only device with a decent sized screen for writing emails and working with documents and no other device has a keyboard as comprehensive or useable as the Uni's.
The Universal era has not ended, with the introduction of Mamaich's great patch to support 128 mb memory and SDHC cards, you will find it impossible to find another PDA on the market that matches for speed, functionality and storage capacity. The Kaiser and other devices that use mini SD's can only support 16GB cards........the Uni beats that too.
The Uni has been reborn, and is far from dead my friend!!
Cheers,
Beasty

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll pass on the V 900, I need my slide out keyboard. May wait if they announce a sliding keyboard version of the 900.
They are completely different. O2 sometimes uses HTC for manufacturing devices but Eten is not like that. And the hardest part is, there are no much Eten users here in xda and so don't expect any custom ROMs.
PS: But as far as Ive experienced with Eten, unlike HTC, they themselves provide a heavily customized ROM which will definitely be faster than HTC! And call recording works clearly on both ends!
Regards,
Carty..
Forgot to mention that providing VGA resolution in qVGA size is Eten and no HTC has it!
Regards,
Carty..
Does Eten provide drivers optimized for hardware video acceleration? Seeing the limitations of recent HTC phones, and having in mind a VGA resolution requires 4x the processing power of QVGA, I would say that's a must.
And, do they offer ROM updates too? HTC gave free updates from WM 5 to WM 6 for many of their phones.

Hi, I had from many years a HTC Himalaya and I loved it... but now I have bought an ETEN Glofiish M800... about the Customizable ROM here u can find a recently customized Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM for the Glofiish: http://eten-users.eu/index.php?showtopic=13538
Regards,
Cristian (aka tesKing)
i dont know for these new devices but for the x500/m700 ive read in many forums that eten devices with vga screens were "slow"
but ive tested none by myself
I have a TYTNII and bought the Eten M800 due to the VGA screen. The speed is more or less the same as for the HTC, i.e. slow but still useable. However you get VGA resolution in a very good quality screen. Apart form that, the M800 is almost inusable, it has touch sensitive buttons that make the everyday use a real PAIN. The WM6 is very unstable in this device probably due to the amount of (useless) applicattions that ETEN has preloaded. I found a workaround to the problem of the buttons:
1) Disable the touch buttons using the registry (leave "OK" and the Windows logo only)
2) Change the voice comnmander by the Cyberon Voice Speed dial
Then there is the problem of the paint....mine looks like 5 years old and has les than one month. Unfortunately I sold the TYTNII... too early.
I use the M800 and I am quite satisfied so far.
Sold my Touch Dual and apart from the weird touch buttons and the small RAM its a very nice device.
There are cooked roms available and you don't need to unlock anything. just put the ROM files on a FAT16 SD card, boot, hold a few buttons and 8 mins later its done.
GPSSlovakias WM 6.1 ROM for the M800 is stable and fast, much faster than the stock ROM.
i also disabled the buttons on the front. unfortunately they are not really usable.
the M810 is nice for sure, but only QVGA!
once you get used to a VGA screen you really cant go back anymore. the difference is huge. especially with apps that take full use of it, like the excellent Netfront 3.5 browser and PocketXpdf.
also it just looks that much cleaner. on TodayAgenda I can show much more info, the SPB Plus and Phone icons looks superb, etc...
IMHO its a great device but has a few shortcommings.
what i would love in the next eten:
128MB ram
flush screen
real front buttons
better keyboard
i would not say that the M800 is unusable. not for me, at least.
it was a great upgrade to my touch dual and as the dual has basically no hardware buttons, it doesnt make much difference that the M800 ones are unusable
btw, I used AE Button Plus for disabling the buttons as its more comfortable that way
the speed of the device is very good with the newest WM 6.1 ROM, really. and there is a new touch screen driver that resolves the 80% CPU bug when pressing the screen.
ROMs for ETEN M800
I agree that once you disable the buttons the device is just OK, specially the screen pays for the rest of the troubles (shared in part by HTC devices). However, I miss the nice send and end buttons of the TYTNII. Where do you get the cooked ROMs? Do you know if there is any available in spanish? I had to buy the WME version because apparently they don't market the device in Spain or any spanish speaking country or I haven't located any dealer selling a spanish version... Maybe it still does not exsist.
I've been able to enter in bootlader mode by pressing power+record+hw reset, then a terminal screen prompts for a USB loader and then for a SD card image file, however I haven't found any rom so far.
here:
WM 6.1 thread
but if you can wait, a new rom version will be upped, according to the thread starter.
I have the WWE version too, as they dont make them in German
no idea if there is a spanish rom.
of course good buttons would be nice, but i disabled the lower row and use the win, ok, left, right buttons and it works well that way.
btw if you click the record button twice, the touchbuttons get locked. if you click twice again, they get unlocked. maybe this is helpful for you
I see a lot of people complaining about the touch buttons but I am having a good experience with them. I found M800 really nice and usable.

Hi,
Could you tell, please, what program do you use to record on both ways with an E-ten?
Thank you
hi there....
should i buy this fone for 250€ ?
i got an HTC Wizard for 3 years.
The m800 is the worst phone I ever had..
Bad paint, flimsy battery cover, 64MB RAM (too low for the VGA screen).
Even my ancient universal is faster (also with 64 MB) then the m800..
Glad to have a diamond now.
My advice: it's not worth the money.
For 250 you can probably buy yourself a second hand Diamond..
Hi , got my new orbit 2 (polaris) the other day and im not that impressed by it as yet.
I came from using my trusty vario(wizard) and it doesnt seem (as yet) much quicker than that.
I know it has built in gps, radio etc. But i cant put me finger on it why it hasnt impressed me much. i played a bit of video on it and it was a bit jumpy, also scroll is a bit iffy.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what it can do and do better than my old phone?
Or what to use to make it a pleasure to use.
Thanks.

Believe me..it could be one of most impressif pocketphone's out there..but the only problem with this device is that HTC didn't do there homework that good and put this device to soon on the market.
But when the new firmware (with drivers) come's online it will be one of the finest pocketphone's out there at the moment.
The only think for us is to pray that HTC will make the firmware with the drivers, otherwise it will go into be books as a slow and bad preforming device 4-ever and HTC will loose a lot of trusty customers!
But like the other also said..it's being sad in a lot off topics now..so lets use the other threads for the complenning
i agree. i bought mine a week ago. the touch cruise and i am not that impress coming from a tmobile mda aka wizard. i still use my wizard. love it but cruise slow. internet is slow. features are wack. the only good thing is the radio but i dnt listen to radio and tomtom navigation. i live in nyc i use the subway so not that usefull to me. htc better come good or its apple for me.

This is exactly what I'm thinking...HTC really messed this wicked phone up....Gonna wait for the Xperia or Samsung i900.
You aren't getting drivers for it. You are getting a software patch that helps fix a few things like scrolling and some basic touch screen functionality, nothing to do with video.
unfortunately, if you want to watch movies you have to convert them yourself and spend the time doing it, then you can have some fun with high quality movies or shows.
i will think twice before I buy my next handset. I don't expect the most amazing device in the world, but I don't like to be mislead in advertising.
Funny, I find my Cruise does everything I ask of it. I find it an improvement in almost every way over the KJAM (OC'ed to 247mhz), and the Treo 750.
Can someone give me some links to help please? Thanks.

How is your cruise setup?
I've just installed Coreplayer .....runs pathetic....picture hardly moves when running a 480MB avi.
Camera...you can forget that....never seen such rubbish...I'm sure the image quality is good...nobody should have to wait that long to take a picture.
I have a UK O2 Orbit 2....got rid of the O2 taskbar icon (after reading it was a memory hogger).
Installed :
HTC Home Screen...
HTC Theme (black) tsk file 102KB vs 200+KB for the 02 Theme.
Skype
Core Player 1.1.1
Opera 9.33
OTO
Calculator skin
WMP Skin
Advanced Configuration
PocketCM Keyboard (one of the best touch apps....never knew I could touch type that fast)
I for one am willing help in what it takes to have this phone running to at least 2/3 of its potential. Compared to my friend's Hermes...thats faster....got suckered into touch and WM6 Pro....
Where as touch v1 is a decent attempt (O2 just messed it up) I'm sure V2 only get better...Microsoft really need to integrate touch into the OS..(whats with the small up arrow next to keyboard selection on the taskbar...with so much empty space around it?....saving on real estate ?).
To me this OS looks/feels the same as the one I had on my SPV C500 years ago...(have you seen the WM6 original calculator !) 3rd party can only do so much.
Well I think HTC better watch out....to sell an expensive phone half finished...well what you say...advertising SOLD IT. But theres a few phones coming out soon and if they utilize the hardware and have half decent software then HTC will have to up the ante...should be interesting.
At the moment we will have to wait for what improvements HTC brings to this COOL LOOKING phone.
Sorry...I'm just a bit disapointed.

Mine is setup like everyone else. I have done all the performance hacks I know of (WM Cache, GlypheCache set to 64K, etc). I have over 25 applications installed.

Coreplayer just released 1.2 which performs much better on the TC. Also, I have encoded many of my vids for PPC viewing since I have owned nothing but WM devices for many years now.

Welcome to the world of Windows Mobile. However, the inclusion of Touch Flo is probably the most unique WM experience offered by a WM device.

Aside from the video driver issues (which BTW hasn't bothered me that much), what software do expect HTC to ship with the device? HTC has done a good job integrating TouchFlo and HTC today into WM. It sounds to me like your complaints software-wise are more directed to MS rather than HTC.

Since both devices are the same performance and feature-wise your only decision is whether you require a physical keyboard on the Tytn II.

I would suggest you installing Core Player 1.2.0
Thanks all...going to install Coreplayer 1.2.0....I did the tweaks, glyph and sound on the shutter..no effect really...maybe I've got a dud....warms up too in my hand....
Also if anyone is running the HTC home screen...which one is it ?...there so many to choose from...
Is there one specifically for the Polaris ?...I've seached and found many versions and variations.
but why does it seem as slow as my wizard? I thought the processor was supposed to be much faster? And the scrolling is finnicky to say the least.
i just downloaded coreplayer 1.3.0. whats so special about core player?
it's the player which supports most formats
I have the Orbit 2, and when I first tried using Internet Explorer I was very disappointed with the extremely slow and jerky scroll, if you could call it 'scroll'. Now that I have managed to install SPB Pocket Plus with the 'Smart Scroll' feature enabled, I'm now happy with that aspect. I haven’t tried video on it yet, but my thoughts now are that I do like the device, especially because of its form factor and looks. Before the Orbit 2 I had the SPV M3100 (Hermes), prior to this I had the SPV C500, and prior to that I had the original windows Smartphone, the Orange SPV.
For me, the Orbit is a step in the right direction, but I will be a little disappointed if video is unusable.
Overall I am happy with my Cruise (I have gotten a sim-free version). Apparently a number of people complain about speed, and I have noticed that this is also related to owners of Cruise who are on the O2 network. My guess is O2 loaded their version with useless software which reduces performance.
Regarding the video issue, I user Coreplayer 1.2 (coreplayer is a must), I encode my videos in QVGA resolution and they seem fine to me. True, you won't be able to take an existing DVD quality rip and expect Cruise to show it well, even in Coreplayer.
Performance-wise, Cruise could probably do a little better given its specs, but overall, I still think it is a very good and practival device.
Hopefully video issue will be addressed, I am not 100% confident it will be fully resolved though. Though the device works fine for me, it is quite upsetting to know that its hardware is not fully utilised...
As my closing statement have a look at the text below, from
gizmodo. com/gadgets/what.s-wrong-with-windows-mobile/whats-wrong-with-windows-mobile-and-how-wm7-and-wm8-are-going-to-fix-it-333536.php
=-=-=-=--=-=
Microsoft is working to fix the whole WM platform. Here's how:
Even when using a super sluggish WinMo phone, it's less an example of a manufacturer not meeting the minimum requirements for RAM, ROM and CPU power, and more a problem of software which has not been optimized to run on it. This is often the service provider's fault. For example, two phones with the same 400MHz processor can be totally different depending on how much optimization the provider decides to do. When you're using a slow phone, blame the provider.
On the same token, the Windows Mobile OS team actually does set a minimum hardware requirement for the "core" features of the OS to make sure the user experience is a good one, but the minimum-requirement bar may be set too low. When companies add apps on top of the core, things start to wobble. Product manager Derek Snyder told me that Microsoft will raise the bar for minimum requirements to a level where phones can be loaded with more software without slowing down the most basic of tasks (e.g. sliding open the AT&T Tilt from portrait to landscape mode).
