256k ram for all HTC phones

The local distributor in South Africa has announced that all new HTC phones will have 256k Ram as from March 2007 onwards.
At Last!
asume you mean 256M ram....
i'd expect 96 or 128 to be standard before 256 though
Seeing is believing - I don't think they would increase the RAM because of the power consumption issues. Actually, mostly this is why there are only 64M (or, in cases, 32M) in all WM5 devices, while some previous WM2003SE models even had 128M. That is, tHW manufacturers have even abandaoned putting 128M (which was pretty common with older devices), let alone even more.
Another question is whether there's any way of utilizing that much RAM. I've published several articles on the memory consumption constraints of the apps I've reviewed. In general, it's pretty hard to sensibly utilize even 64M RAM (unless you run really memory-hungry apps / games) , let alone even more

My apologies.- I meant 256m and not 256k as stated. This information has been confirmed as well as a new model that will incorporate a credit card reader. This will be usd by plumberers, etc, onsite.
Also comming is a device with a 5" screen and a clip on keyboard.
Watch this space for red hot news!
Well the one you refer to with the 5" screen and clip on keyboard sounds like the HTC Athena.
But I think it's 256mb ROM not RAM.
ROM is where you install and store files. We currently have 128mb, of which, upto 64 is usable, but 16 is used up by those applications the operators think we need, so is partitioned. We end up with 45mb or so usable space If we had 256mb ROM, we would get between 150 and 170mb roughly speaking depending on their choice to use 16 or 32mb for extended ROM files.
RAM is where they run, and is what uses the battery power. 64mb is just about enough, 128 would be more than enough. 256 would be silly.

I have just re read the article and it definately states 256MB RAM.
I would'nt be too much of a sceptic as this is the Company that gave us the latest ROM update for the TyTN. Let's wait and see!

sd ram and such
but with prices these days why not put 1GB flash in the devices

Toshiba Portégé G900

Browsing for a phone to replace my Hermes, I found this!
It's the Toshiba Portégé G900, it has EDGE (no HSDPA but I can live with that)
a 416MHz processor, 128MB of RAM miniSD, windows mobile 6, A screen resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, WiFi, bluetooth, full QWERTY keyboard etc.
BUT I've never actually heard of Toshiba making phones
Should I stick with the Hermes? or go for the Toshiba?
i believe that htc also get their gsm part oem from another company
nothing wrong with that same way they get their lcd displays
thosiba made pda's for a long time though
but personaly i dont see why it would be a step up over the hermes apart from the higher res
and a step down to go to edge from umts
it has about the same processor, double the RAM, fingerprint/gimmick reader
it kinda appeals to me (even though i want a TRUE pocket size phone )
p.s. what is the difference between umts and edge? my service provider says theyre just as fast :/
it DOES have UMTS and HSPDA.
http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-14182-Toshiba+in+Paris:+the+Portégé+G900.html
" my service provider says theyre just as fast"
typicaly service providers know as much about such things
as normal supermarket salespeople knows about the computers/hardware they sell
of cause it could be that their company have issues making umts work
GPRS == up to 115 kbps but more like 30 to 80 kbps irl.
EDGE == up to 236kbps but more like 100 to 160 kbps irl
UMTS == supports up to 2Mbps, but in real life deployments is limited to 384 kbps.
HSDPA == support up to 14 Mbps, but irl will prob be between 4 and 5 Mbps.
i like the screen of that toshiba but worry that old applications may have issues with such a res :S
The link posted by Heov (post # 4) states that the RAM is 64 MB.
Are we all sure that it is 128 MB. Is there an official Toshiba page which I believe would be more reliable source of information regarding memory specifications.
Regards

yeah, it's 64mb "internal memory" which means STORAGE (availalbe storage). toshiba's spec page is 128mb ram. ppl have confirmed this in other forums.
sound pretty good then! I'll need to hold it in my hands first though, so I'll know it feels right aswell!
I did search for a smaller phone than my hermes with a full qwerty keyboard Anyone have any info on the S730 I doubt it'll come out soon after the vox launch though......
Got it!
800x480 !
Ill get one tomorrow and post my comments asap ....
Not so happy
Got the G900 4 days ago but am not pleased with it at all
Did you even bother having a look at the BIG Tosh G900 Post in this forum? All of your concerns have already been discussed.
Uhh no ...

HTC Touch Pro Aka Raephel Vs HTC Touch Diamond

Hi,
I am in Delhi (india), and need to buy a new PDA. I am not able to make up my mind on Touch Diamond or Touch pro. HTC touch pro is not yet launched here, and will be launched soon... if somebody knows the date of launch, please let me know.
Can somebody advice me, if it is worth waiting for Touch pro, or go ahead and buy Diamond.
Thanks.
The Touch Pro has the following extra things:
- Slide out keyboard
- 288Mb RAM rather than 192Mb
- 512Mb ROM rather than 256Mb (Diamond also has build in memory for file storage - eg, music etc)
- Flash to go with camera
- more powerful battery
- microSD slot instead of 4Gb built in memory
- fair bit thicker (almost 1cm I think)
- TV out (though an extra cable which needs to be purchased)
You can see a side by side comparison here:

Wrong, the Raphael does not have more ROM. The Diamond has 4gb ROM while the Raphed has only 512mb. I'm pretty sure it's more thicker than an cm, especially when you consider the keyboard

Right, 18mm to 11.5mm I believe.
It's really not that thick though, believe me...

To clarify...
The Diamond has 256Mb + the 4Gb storage, whereas the Diamond has 512Mb + microSD card slot.

True, however ROM is what's built in so i took it that's what you mean No biggy, good clarification for all.
Very Importantly , It depends on convenience. If you do a lot of typing and used to hardware keyboards then Raphael is a go
If you are used to onscreen keyboard , Touch Diamond has a good onscreen keyboard which gets very comfortable to use.Further , raphael has extra ram ( 288 , but again 64 mb may be off for Graphics processor as diamond )and provides storage card slot.

Well, I think the bigger part is that firmware can't be put on the 4GB fixed memory or the microSD card, so the Raphael has more room for that.
Thanks everyone for replying back. Any idea when is "Raphael" launching in India or in Delhi for that matter. And what is the expected price for it ?

All very true, I will edit my post to try to clarify.
By the way, if diamond has 4 GB fixed memory on the board, and Raphael has only 512 mb of that + microSD card, so wont the Diamond should access the memory faster ?, and it should be more reliable too ?
The speed depends on your MicroSD card, some are pretty fast.
Airtel Might launch Raphael in a few months.

Yeah, I googled for about 15 mins for some but could only find them on pre-order (the 12Gb ones) with no release date or price.

Ok lets try again...
Diamond RAM: 192MB. Raphael RAM: 288MB.
Diamond ROM: 256MB. Raphael ROM: 512MB.
Diamond Extra memory: 4GB(Internal). Raphael Extra memory: MicroSD.
RAM is for loading programs and using the phone.
ROM is for storing windows and programs.
Extra memory is for programs, music, video and images.
Hope it helps.
4GB intern sucks, I have a 8gb micro sd hc which I also can use for other stuf. Also reading and writing goes faster with memorycard reader than using the phone with usb cable.

Recieved my sandisk 8gb mobile ultra class 6! microsdhc card today.
Replaced my 4gb class 2.
My kaiser is flying with this new card...
Looking up adresses in tomtom could be a pain, but now it's done in the blink of an eye.
The speed makes up for the extra money (and that is not much to start with: 41 euro incl shipment) !!!!

Just to clarify further it makes no difference whether the memory is built in or not... ROM is Read Only Memory and is generally where the operating system is stored and where the device boots from. The additional on-board 4gb in the Diamond is RAM which is available for storing user files...
