Toshiba Portégé G900 - General Topics

Browsing for a phone to replace my Hermes, I found this!
It's the Toshiba Portégé G900, it has EDGE (no HSDPA but I can live with that)
a 416MHz processor, 128MB of RAM miniSD, windows mobile 6, A screen resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, WiFi, bluetooth, full QWERTY keyboard etc.
BUT I've never actually heard of Toshiba making phones
Should I stick with the Hermes? or go for the Toshiba?

i believe that htc also get their gsm part oem from another company
nothing wrong with that same way they get their lcd displays
thosiba made pda's for a long time though
but personaly i dont see why it would be a step up over the hermes apart from the higher res
and a step down to go to edge from umts

it has about the same processor, double the RAM, fingerprint/gimmick reader
it kinda appeals to me (even though i want a TRUE pocket size phone )
p.s. what is the difference between umts and edge? my service provider says theyre just as fast :/

it DOES have UMTS and HSPDA.
http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-14182-Toshiba+in+Paris:+the+Portégé+G900.html

" my service provider says theyre just as fast"
typicaly service providers know as much about such things
as normal supermarket salespeople knows about the computers/hardware they sell
of cause it could be that their company have issues making umts work
GPRS == up to 115 kbps but more like 30 to 80 kbps irl.
EDGE == up to 236kbps but more like 100 to 160 kbps irl
UMTS == supports up to 2Mbps, but in real life deployments is limited to 384 kbps.
HSDPA == support up to 14 Mbps, but irl will prob be between 4 and 5 Mbps.
i like the screen of that toshiba but worry that old applications may have issues with such a res :S

The link posted by Heov (post # 4) states that the RAM is 64 MB.
Are we all sure that it is 128 MB. Is there an official Toshiba page which I believe would be more reliable source of information regarding memory specifications.
Regards

yeah, it's 64mb "internal memory" which means STORAGE (availalbe storage). toshiba's spec page is 128mb ram. ppl have confirmed this in other forums.

sound pretty good then! I'll need to hold it in my hands first though, so I'll know it feels right aswell!
I did search for a smaller phone than my hermes with a full qwerty keyboard Anyone have any info on the S730 I doubt it'll come out soon after the vox launch though......

Got it!
800x480 !
Ill get one tomorrow and post my comments asap ....

Not so happy
Got the G900 4 days ago but am not pleased with it at all

Did you even bother having a look at the BIG Tosh G900 Post in this forum? All of your concerns have already been discussed.

Uhh no ...

HTC Wizard

In case you missed PocketPCThoughts!
Pocket PC Italia has just revealed a bit of information on the HTC Wizard. Although it is subject to change, here's the buzz: Windows Mobile 5.0, GSM/GPRS (with EDGE) - Quad-Band 850/900/1800/1900MHz, a Texas Instruments OMAP 850 processor (interesting choice?), 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM, a 2.8" QVGA display, Bluetooth, 802.11b Wi-Fi (rejecting earlier reports of this device having 802.11g), IR, a 2.1MP integrated camera with Flash LED, dual speakers, a QWERTY keyboard, mini-USB, and a miniSD slot. Here's a Google translation if you need it.
Yeah, it looks kinda fake, and I personally think it looks so IPAQ, but I don't care as long as it is an HTC device...
What do you guys think about it in case it's in fact true?
Yeah, it looks a bit fake, but the concept with the landscape keyboard is cool! I always miss my Keyboard while surfing in landscape mode. Landscape Keyboards have the advantage of leaving more space for the keys. I'd like to see it in this way.
But i've read of two devices: Wizard (without keyboard) and Galaxy (with keyboard).
no 3g or video conference though :/
nice that it have a blizt but it's bound to be a stealer of minuts
Nice specs, BUT:
-Mini-SD? What? Why? This doesn't make any sense. Why not SDIO?
- TI OMAP 850? That thing runs on 200 MHz. So then we have a device with integrated Wifi, but no way Skype can run on 200 MHz.
Seems HTC made a little error in the specs, hope they correct this and turn out a killer device.
BTW: of course no 3G, or the Universal would be in trouble in terms of sales. If this Wizard/Galaxy had 3G as well, what would there be for the Universal to compete on? Bigger, more expensive, but with the same specs and a less MP camera?
faster cpu and sdio and more ram and bigger screen
this device was ment to be a replacement for magic to limit the stuff to make it small
and it's not like other phone companies ever narrowed their range so they only had one 3g device
there are other things to change between devices then the network they are using like the specs you dont care for....
Are you guys sure there's no 3G? Note the camera lens upfront the device.. Only 3G phones have that..
the specs say EDGE
which is pretty much 2.5G
have yet to see any phones supporting both EDGE and 3g
and if it did i guess they would state it as specs
its looks ok, but it better have a fast processor, and a sdio slot? else it may be useless to me.
I found this one as the htc wizard :
The rumor that broke about this last week wasn’t particularly reliable, so we exercised an unusual amount of restraint (for us at least, since we are total gossip hounds) and didn’t publish anything, but a pic and some plausible details have surfaced on Howard Forums about the HTC Wizard. This one is supposed to be HTC’s new smallish Pocket PC Phone that’s about the same size as the HTC Magician/i-mate JAM/XDA II mini and have quad-band GSM, EDGE, 802.11g, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel digital camera, and a QVGA quality, 320 x 240 pixel LCD screen. Will supposedly be out in Q3 of this year, possibly OEM’d by HP.

It looks yucky....I'm not gonna be swayed from my Universal!!!!

Any feedback yet on Eten M600

From all the specs I read, it looks like a great piece of equipment:
- quad-band (useful for me)
- 802.11 b/g (at last!!!). Wonder if WPA/WPA2 is supported, and PSK and/or 802.1x
-full-size SDIO
- Size looks to be between Magician and Himalaya (good enough for me!)
- BT 1.2 supported
- WM5.0...
So if anyone has anything to say about Eten in general and on the M600 in particular, I'd be glad to hear.
Cheers,
Hal

i was looking at one of these too. This looks like one sexxy handset!
not 4 me.
crappy samsung cpu, 64mb ram and useless 802.11g(it will take tons of energy if used)...
Qtek 2020i still the best.

I played with an Eten at Modaco.
Nice device, but fairly plasticy, unlike the aluminium sheathed godliness of HTC's stuff.
Nice to have the competition though. However, If i was going for a non HTC, I'd wait for the Atom = perkier.

Hal,
Do you know where this product can be purchased with a new abbonement in France?
mogwai
As an owner of imate JAM and after reading all that about the warranty on blue angel and stuff I am going forward and I ll be ordering an ETEN M600 this monday morning!
At least it has full size SD and it supports SDIO!!!!
As for the quality mentioned above nothing can be worse than the firming on JAM. Have you seen the battery cover of the JAM???? How many of you have a jam that its colour didn't came off? Mine is becoming grey after the silver has gone in the back!
Anyway as for the samsung processor just think that K-JAM has the 200MHz version of it while M600 has the 400MHz one and I ve seen some benchmarks on the net showing clearly that tha 400MHz Samsung is faster in many tests than the Intel 416MHz located inside my JAM. At least msmobiles in their recent review say that skype works flawless something I never managed to see on my JAM or my friend's PDA2k.
So I will make a small review as soon as I lay my hands on it sometime after 5th of December.
And admins please create an area for ETEN users too.
I've seen the E-ten m500 (300 MHz Samsung CPU) in action and must say that I was really impressed.
Scrolling of navigation cards (Navigon Mobile Navigator 5.1) almost in real-time.
You'll need at least 416/520 MHz Intel CPU to achieve same results.
Don't know about battery life though.
Sascha
Sabo M500 has exactly the same processor with M600 and its clocked at 400MHz. I also saw an M500 and it was really fast and smoother than my JAM. Let me get my hands on M600 and I will let you all know how good it is!
Too bad there is no keyboard!!
The missing keyboard is one of the advantages of my M600 for me!
M600 in FR and lack of keyboard
Ok, I confess, I couldn't hold it anymore: I bought a K-Jam WWE while in Dubai last week.
First impression: not slower than BA/HIMA running WM5 (I have both - BA has dead screen now...).
It is the right size for me.
I tend to hate the keyboards, having been on Palm since 1995... The BA keyboard was laughable! But the on on K-Jam is real cool.
Keep feedback on M600 pouring please, I still find it's a nice piece of equipment!
My 2c,
Hal.

M500 has a 400mhz cpu
I had (still have, in fact) a Magician (JAM) till about 3 days back when after careful comparison of the various alternatives available (I wanted a WiFi pocket pc phone that was stable and fast) I bought the Eten M600.
Compared to my friends K-JAMs and JAMINs this one is really stable and fast. I can skype away happily on the M600 while my friends struggle to start up skype on their JAMINs. I make calls on Skype while they listen to garbage trying to make one.
Eten rocks, and at a price that $150 cheaper (including a free 1GB SD Card) than the JAMIN its too good a deal to ignore. @ HTC - competition has arrived, and in style!

tatsdiy.com got a TV OUT demo on its site
At last!
Official launch date is May 15.
I see this unit as being the long awaited upgrade to my XDA2, the dimensions are very similar but it is lightyears ahead in all specs and blows away the competition. This is what htc should have been working on instead of moving its product line towards a smartphone design.
O2 asia said they would offer a free upgrade to WM6 once they have tested it.
The USB OTG will be a huge benefit, meaning this PPC will no longer be tied to synchronization with a PC - you can use it with USB flash drives, printers, cameras etc.
IMHO, this is the best all round package you can currently buy and well worth importing it if you want a XDA2 replacement. The presentation is a bit disappointing though, pretty bland but everything else is spot on.
its available in Singapore already, priced currently at SGD1498

hmm, IMHO, that looks like cheap launch price as compared to what HTC universal debuted there
It's the only PDA I know with an embedded dedicated graphics card. Here are the specs (at the store):
Memory: 128MB RAM (DUDE!), 2112MB ROM
Processor: 520mhz PXA270 (um.)
Band: Triband GSM, 3.5G
Connectivity: BT2.0, Wifi B/G, Consumer-level IR(DA)
Graphics: Nvidia GoForce 5500 (not to be confused with the GeForce Go used in Laptops, but this will help A LOT.)
Features:
USB (OTG!)
TV-Out
SRS-Audio
microSD slot (why not a standard SD? <_<)
And that's that. My only complaint is that ve haff no FM Radio - I'm not too hot about GPS yet - but methinks an iTech Clip should solve that... >_>
Anyone wants to donate $1500? -.-

<_< ok, I just went back to the store. Mentioned nowhere on the brochure or flyer at all. It's something that's marketable so I don't see why it won't be mentioned unless it's not there.
I think its rediculous that they release it without WM6. I am sure they will offer an upgrade path though. Sweet phone...
I was getting ready to get it when I noticed there is no EGPRS
Living in GSM 3G deprived NA and being quite ok with EGPRS (but not GPRS) speeds I can live with that, but as far as I can tell there is no EGPRS on this one
I know sometimes manufacturers will just say GPRS and it includes both EDGE and GPRS but I have a feeling that this is not the case with the Flame?
AFAIK EGPRS is a SW thing only, so would a hack be thinkable?
Is this not an HTC made device or?

I didn't, I mentioned "SRS Sound", and I refuse to quote stereo speaker and speakerphone since those are pretty much part and parcel of PPCs since 2002. As for FM Radio, yeah, my bad. I've since confirmed that it has an FM radio, but it's just not mentioned in the fliers. Rock on <_<

Dopod U100 is such a large and akward device though, I've had an O2 and iMate branded one but don't want one again...
Have been using it for nearly a week. Here's my impression:
- It's big, but not too big for shirt and jeans pocket (without any case)
- Sturdy made - much much better than the XDA trion, which is my last machine.
- Quite responsive, above average, but see battery
- Not many bundled software - no backup, UI tweak, launcher etc. and I don't like the task manager (O2 menu); it does have a better alarm and a basic wireless manager though
- Not enough buttons! (2 side buttons on the left; +/- button and camera button on the right; L/R softkeys + start and ok buttons + Call/Cancel buttons in the front) That's it. No jog dial, no calendar / contact buttons, no hold button
- Auto-focus camera with led. One word - SWEET
- 128mb RAM and 2 gig rom ... finally, this people have some sense
- Battery life, now this can be a problem. The PXA family is not known for its battery saving ability (I think the samsung 400 is better), and with a huge screen and ram to boot, I'm sure if you use the performance setting (520 mhz) and use it a lot (gaming, wireless), it won't last for even a day. It is highly recommended that you use programmes like XCPU scalar to scale the the speed to 208 when the machine is idle, and max it at 416 (which is enough for most programmes). Then the battery life will be acceptable.
- Bluetooth, crap. Not entirely O2's fault, but how come after so many years MS(uxK) still can't get it right!? I used to own the XDAIIs and the broadcom stack is much better. I tried iTech and Jarba - the call part is ok but the music part is still not done right. Let's hope with the WM6 upgrade things will be better.

Thanks to all to take your time to guide me..
HTC does not have many VGA offerings. but its not the end of the world with qvga.
I started a thread recently for my self that could answer some of your questions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1970736
maybe flame
maybe sonyE's upcomming x1
I've been looking hard to find a device to upgrade my Trinity to a VGA device and the sad thing is there really isn't anything decent out there right now and hardly anything worthwile coming out, at least from what's been announced.
HTC, forget it they don't have anything in a small form factor that's VGA. Too bad, the Touch Cruise would have been absolutely perfect if it had a VGA. The only thing that could have made that better was if it had a Capacitive VGA touch screen.
E-Ten has some VGA devices but they only have 64 Megs of ram and it's poorly used, you end up with an average of about 12 Megs running which can make it painful to use. Not to mention its quirks like not being able to power off the device like HTC devices by holding the Power Button down, lots of little things like that.
Imate Ultimate Series, all except the 8502 are VGA but most are lacking in GPS if that's a feature you are looking for and they are bigger than most devices if size matters. Not to mention Imate seems to be in trouble, their current rom is very buggy, support seems limited and the battery life is terrible.
O2 Flame as mentioned by Rudegar is a posibility but I believe it's TriBand, that's a problem for me as I'm in North America but if you don't need the extra band, it's worth considering.
The Xperia also mentioned by Rudegar pretty much has everything and goes behind VGA with an 800x400 resolution but it's not available yet. Personally I'm not a big fan of slide out querty keyboards, I find them to big and combersome to use with two thumbs but given the deminsions are about the same as the O2 Flame, I'd choose this over the Flame if I couldn't find anything smaller.
The Gigabyte GSmart MS808 has potential, don't know the diminsions but the current specs seems to indicate it has everything you are looking for. Haven't had any experience with Gigabyte but people seem to like them so it's worth taking a look at. Again, it's not available until later this year though.
Bottom line, nothing out there that's really worth it right now in the VGA market. If you can wait I'd hold off until later this year, I think we'll be seeing a lot of new devices coming out with VGA, even HTC should be moving towards VGA as their leaked new Touch Flow (Manilla) seems to indicate.
Personally I've been seriously considering jumping Windows Mobile and moving over to an Iphone for a while. Now that they are building in ActiveSync support with push email into the next firmware. I'd have to get used to a lot of limitations, no camera, gps, basic functionality ect. that I don't have know but the capactive touch screen!!! I really wish there was a Windows Mobile device out there that used this technology. Once you use it, it makes it really hard to go back to a resitive touch device almost unbearable!
I'd really wish there was a VGA Windows Mobile device that had it all for me the absolute minimum of any device should be
Small Slim Form Factor
Good Battery Life
TriBand HSDPA/HSUPA
Quadband GSM
400 Mhz Proc.
VGA Display
256 Megs Rom
128 Megs Ram
GPS
3Mp Camera/VGA Camera (Video Calls)
Bluetooth
Make that screen Capacitive and it would be the best device out there!
" Personally I'm not a big fan of slide out querty keyboards, I find them to big and combersome to use with two thumbs but given the deminsions are about the same as the "
nor am i a fan of keyboards but other then that which one could just not use the x1 looks pretty sweet so far
a non VGA device thats interesting is the new
MWg Atom V.
http://www.expansys.ca/d.aspx?i=164854
its an all-in-one with an attractive design.
draw backs are:
qvga
64 ram
minimalistic 6 buttons- 2 for calling
and maybe price.

Aside recent rumors that SE Xperia will be on At&T so that will give us in NA the option of plenty unlocked X1's in early 2009.

Infinity vs. Huawei MediaPad 10 FHD?

I have already purchased Infinity, but its through the Amazon so have still potential to return. The overall company reputation wise ASUS is superior to Huawei but with some of the issues on Infinity (which all seem to be fixable but whether they be fixed is another topic). Is anyone else considering Huawei's Mediapad 10 FHD as alternative?

- This does not use Tegra 3; therefore, no TegraZone for those who wants to play games from TegraZone. However, according to several sites Huawei's quadcore can be up to 30-40% faster than the Tegra 3 with GPU possessing 16 or 18 cores compared to Tegra 3's 12 cores.
- In addition, this is the first android tablet with 2GB of RAM.
- It will have HD screen.
- Downside is 8GB of internal storage. With OS installed I am not sure how much left. Though I saw one site said it has 16 GB space, which is still small but with that I can go as long as it supports 32 or 64 microSD with full speed.
Infinity's performance is most likely restricted by I/O, which may or may not be related to Tegra 3. So better spec CPU/GPU and RAM may not necessary solve the issue. Quite frankly, better performance on CPU/GPU are just speculation and I have not seen official benchmarks (remember GPU on A5X has only 4 cores but superior to the Tegra 3 so #s of cores does not equate to the performance).
My honest hope is that ASUS realize this as potential competition/threat and decides to really fix existing issues on infinity to show what its true power is. Overall, I am truly impressed with infinity where it runs it run extremely smooth without lag, but when I/O issue kicks in that's when things are really noticeable.

So lets deal with GENERAL (higher level) topics:
Asus = is generally regarded as "APPLE" of Asia ! Infact if you have the Infinity packing etc ,,, and if ever you have had got ANY APPLE prodcuts , you will see HOW ASUS is 'copying' apple's PACKAGING ... down the the user manual 'envelope' and cables/connectors > let along come up with NEAR APPLE SPECS ( unlike someone esle jsut downright COPYING & and using Apples ha/w parts that they msfger ,,, etc etc
Am no teckie geek (to all teckie > bows .. hail to ya guys...) but I have been using laptops since 1980s ... tablets since the first IPAD ...and so in last 23 yrs haveing travelled 6 Millions ((3 million each with 2 MAJOR airlines FF programs)) > so yes lots of travelling stories of 'broken hardware' when u needed it MOST !!!..........>>>so just some background of where I am based my views >>>>
>>>HowWai (partdon the PUN!) .....often is cheap and nasty is often reffered in manylands as "HAY_WAY" or mind of its OWN!!! so if the specs are to be 'beleived' then at best you will get 2G in place to 3G ,,,, and LTE = based on CHINA TELECOM and maybe not to GSM standards ............blah blah ....(not to mention several CODE/HACK issues thats lots of teckie pple have talked about etc etc....)
>screen = IPS ( seems lot older tech - out of copyright specs is what u get) not the IPS+PLUS
I have been using IPS panel laptops (Thinkpad T60&T61P) since 2007 ... they are shear DELIGHT to view most movies and show PPTS = best best tool to have ... but the IPS+PLUS = like 1000 times better !!
> Cheap PLASTIC backing ( which often distourts and causes HARDWARE failure ( epsecially if u backacker on long trips like me) I prefer a SOLID BACKING ie metal backing (( thats why APPLE and ASUS = did theirs that way!! and SAMSUNG is finding that out fast in their GALAXY ranges)............
Sorry no offence to the ANY of the msfgers , but just some of my personal observations. I have had the ATT tablets from H'ai and after exchanging 12 of them in 6mths , and endless 'tech' issues ( not to mentioned some TECH support tired to do REMOTE LOGIN (without asking for permission first) after i logged in a SUPPORT call..... and finding ' applets/java scripts (to capture my password) ' installed by that guy ----- DONT GIVE ME MUCH comfort ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, if not raging MAD !!! you get what you PAY FOR = true here )
So even if you disregard these teckie guy's stupidity ........... ASUS = still rocks in everyway ... Their Specs + Warranty ; Exchange + Tech Support + XDA develeopers acess ............
IMHO ASUS makes it no brainer !! .....:highfive:
>Buying anything from shady chinese company
Also, I've heard bad reviews about Huawei before.
