Which MDA phone? - General Topics

Think this should go here.
I’m thinking of changing from 3 onto T-mobile with their felxt plan, seems a good deal really. The thing is I wanted a PDA style phone and unsure which one to go for, I think the MDA pro is a highest in the range but still costs a fair bit on those tariffs the other option is the other MDA’s.
Just a few quick questions, can you connect to the proper Internet via the home WIFI on all the MDA’s? Can this be used to access msn messenger etc?
Also noticed the MDA pro seems to have been about a while, is it going to be replaced/updated anytime soon?

anyone got one of the above handhelds?.
ive got the mda compact at the mo, very happy with it after upgrading to bigstorage and 1.13ROM/1.13RADIO
But I could do with wifi, and of course WM2005 would be nice as well.
Is the slide out keyboard any good?
im going to a shop over the next few days, but was wondering if anyone had one they could comment on, whats the keybaord like etc.
as for operator
O2 --- im on now, signal great, cant fault, its CUSTOMER BLOODY SERVICES.
they have no clue
a) i cant add bolt-ons to my account as they arent sure whether they will go on
b) cant check balance without being in front of a pc or making a premium rate call
c) recently had my number ported across to an orange account, MORE HASSLE
i want an operator where i can check balance at all times, have good signal, check texts left and good gprs pricings.
looking at possible ORANGE?
who do you use, and DONT tell me to stop with O2.....
I'm with Orange and on the whole I'm fairly happy.
Tha balance can be checked on-line or by phone and it's not premium rate. (Might even be free)
Bolt-ons are called bundles.
Data is currently costing me £1 per MB
Porting numbers is ALWAYS a hassle. Networks don't make it easy to get the PAC code.
T-mobile. get the web and walk tarifs and you cant go wrong. join on the web n walk tarifs.

Any TILT users with WM 6.1 been Charged for tethering??

Hey guys I just recently updated to 6.1 on my tilt with vega's rom and i came across an old thread that said with WM 6.1 that carriers could see if the device was tethering using the internet sharing feature and charge accordingly. I use WMWiFiRouter and i have unlimited medianet on my plan and together to this point I have not incurred any data charges.. Has anyone else used wmwifirouter with 6.1 and been charged??
Thanx
Edit/Delete Message
about a month back since I was moving apartments I ended up using about a gigs worth of tethering until my internet was setup. I tried to use it pretty sparingly - in the end no fancy charges on the bill!
also I have cingulars PDA personal max with the smallest minute plan (totals about 90 per month)
I must say though this is one example, ive read all kinds of things on this topic and its too confusing to be predictable. Your taking a risk but i think it should be ok for ocasional light use.
Another strategy since it seems you dont want to restrict yourself to light use. Just go nuts really and when the bill hits if it EVEr hits who knows, thats the point where you call up and act humbly confused. The cingular people will remove the 33,000+ dollars worth of charges. This is what happened to me on my first month with the tilt no joke 33,000!!! - thats how I got punched from 20 dollar a month media net access with to 40 pda personal max. they know once cant expect a payment of such bonkers proportions -beware its all part of their plan at all times to make you upgrade so good luck.
Wow thats crazy.. I myself use under a gig a month and i have been doing this for a long time. I was just caught off guard when i read that you can possibly be billed when you use Windows mobile 6.1.. Are you using windows mobile 6 or 6.1??
I would assume they will not be charging. I believe that it is a new feature of windows mobile 6.1 that could be implemented if at&t ever made a windows mobile 6.1 ROM but at&t's official ROM is still windows mobile 6. (Even the updated one that was just released) So how could they charge for a feature that they don't support? But I guess we will find out here in another billing cycle.
Dont DO IT
I just upgraded my phone to a AT&T tilt. I already had a Media Max 200 bundle that I have had for almost 2 years. As of last night my account said I had the Media MAx 200 plan. .. I poped the SIM card into the tilt this morning. Now I view my account online and it says that my MediaMax 200 plan expires on 04/08 and the amount next to it says zero. When I look at the data usage it shows I am being billed ber kb... you guys need to watch it. Strange thing is my wife has a HTC phone that we got on ebay it was a eurpoean import and her media max is still there. I think it has somethin to do with them knowing the IMIE number. Something to think about. So Ilm off to find a way to mask the darn imie number or I will just purchase an import.
Any suggestions

Swap to a NON-PDA phone, use that for a couple days, call them up and tell 'em the Tilt is an occasional use phone. That was a suggestion that I'd read in another thread dealing with that issue. And to the tethering WM6.1 users (including myself), we'll see in a month or so whether we go HOLY F$%^ING $H^T or if its business as usual.
can you guys point me in the right direction for setting up my teathering. I can't get it to work.
hope this helps..

As long as you have either XP or Vista, all you have to do is find a utility called "internet sharing" which should be a part of your communication manager, especially if you have the custom ones that allow you to turn on/off bluetooth, wifi, phone, etc. Once you tap on it you will see just two drop down boxes where one of them is for selecting bluetooth or usb.
step 1. Click on the "connect" soft button which will activate your data connection.
step 2. plug in the usb port of your Tilt/Kaiser.
Step 3. plug in a usb port on your pc/notebook. (this will ensure it won't activate your activesync connection)
wait about 5 seconds or so and launch your browser.. have a blast.
Its that simple.
I have Dutty's Touch (Build 18548.dutty's). In the connections sub menu I have the wireless modem option. After I open it, select usb and hit start nothing happens. I'm running VISTA HOME PREMIUM. when you say hit connect do you mean the "Data Connection in the com manager or the "Start" in the wireless modem panel? I have followed the directions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=288753

You upgraded to a fresh-out-of-box Tilt or you upgraded your Tilt to windows mobile 6.1? When I bought my Tilt they told me that my media max data plan would not work with it and that they would need to upgrade it to a 3G data plan. Could this be your case?

Checkout this screenshot.. this is the utility that actually comes with even the stock ROM. See if you can find it in some other folder.
So, you're gonna tap the connect soft key and then plug into the usb port of the computer. The other utilities became pretty much obsolete once MS added this utility, I believe in WM5 for the first time.
The others have to be installed on your machine and activesync disabled.. this one doesn't need any of those.

Im on the iphone plan (iphone under repair) and the tilt works fine on the iphone data plan. using another sim that is only mediamax 200 it also works fine. i dont think the plan needs to be 3G specified for it to work with the tilt
Help Me Out Here
Okay so what do I do? I got the tilt from AT&T via fed express. It had a sim card in it but i didn't use it. I just took the sim card out of my old blackjack and put it in the tilt and now nothing... it worked but online the price and plan changed. anyoine have any ideas

The sim for the tilt needs to be a 3g sim. Your blackjack one is probably not unless you upgraded it. You can call at&t over the phone and get them to switch the sims to the new one that came with your tilt.
I think this is what you are asking but I'm not really sure.
Data Plans
I had similar experience where I called ATT and asked for to have my Tilt switched to Unlimited media net for $19.95 +200 SMS instead of $35 PDA data plan with 1500 SMS included... and lady on the other side told me that MediaNet is - and I quote "DIFFERENT TYPE OF INTERNET"
Well, I tried to pursuade her that it is same data plan my wife has on her Iphone but she was determined not to give up telling me fairytales about "Specialized DATA PLAN for iPhone...." and that Windows device uses more data than Iphone
Eventhough I told her that use about 60Mb/per month, mostly for emails (and comparing to my wife whose data usage is more on the level of Apache server than iPhone - up to 10-12Gb/month) still did not help to make ATT agent diviate from reading the predifined customer service script in front of her, and lower my Data plan rate.
The following evening I went to local ATT store and very cool sales rep(store was empty so I was obviously breaking monothony of his shift) Changed the plan without single questions. - Everything works same way as with PDA data plan - no issues whatsoever.
I was having an intermittent data connection issue on my phone (it usually worked in 3G, but not on EDGE, very weird) I have the MediaMax 19.99
Anyway, I called in and actually got a decent rep. I told him that I switched sims between a Tilt and a Razor (work vs night/weekend) and he was very cool.
Basically he saw that my data wasn't crazy, said that he totally got what was going on, and was not going to raise any flags or anything, but that he "could not provide support" for data connection issues while the SIM was in a Tilt with that plan. He then said he would check everything on the back end and to restart my phone in 4 minutes.
Presto chango and it has worked almost perfectly since (about the last 3 weeks) I personally agree with his stance. I mean, I think AT&T is still getting a good bit of cash from me, but obviously I am gaming the system a little bit, so just not supporting it, but not coming down on it seems fair to me.
THe guy I got owns a Tilt (and probably has the freakin MEdia Max plan!) but I am sure if you get some yaboo who doesn't know a slider phone from a slider burger then all you will get is the rote script. In that case, be polite, hand up, and call back until you get someone that knows what to do. Or as another poster said, try going to the store although there is no guarantee there that they will be less idiotic.
When I hang up, they call me back
Any update on the original poster's question on this? Does WM6.1 include some new way of letting carriers know if the data is being used "from the phone directly" or "from a PC via tethering"?
It looks like the Internet Sharing in 6.1 gives the carriers the ability to track usage, but this doesn't necessarily mean that they will be tracking usage. If anyone is worried about this just find or cook a WM6.1 rom without internet sharing and install the one from a 6.0 rom like the one I have attached (made by Chainfire).
I think _Alex_ has a really clean 6.1 and mine (check sig) has nearly everything removed.
Personally I don't think they will be checking, at least yet... They haven't released a WM 6.1 Tilt, so they are probably working under the assumption that none of the Tilts are 6.1.

Moving to Japan... will I be able to use email (text messages) on a Tytn?

Hi all, I'm moving to Japan in June and want to take a 3G mobile out with me such as a Tytn or G900. My question is, I know that out there they use mobile email instead of SMS messaging. Will I be able to use this with a Window Mobile device either normally or through an update of some sort? I have searched on here and read some stuff about MMS, is that the same as email?
Does it depend on provider? I don't mind which one, but Softbank seem good for gaijin.
I really want to keep using WinMo but don't really want a Japanese language model.
Many thanks in advance!
Marky
SOftbank is pretty much your only choice as there are few devices that support the other carrier's frequencies. You can send SMS for free within the Softbank network, but you won't be able to reach any of your friends on other networks with that. Also, sending SMS to foreign countries comes at a whopping 100Y per message - nothing you will want to do too often. The problem with mail and internet here is that with Softbank you basically get punished for using a WinMo device. Even with minimal usage (10-15 MB) you will max out their stupid flatrate plan and end up paying 10,000Y. This *might* be worth it for heavy users, but most people would be much better off with a decently priced 200 MB plan I guess. Oh, and don't even think about using the old open Vodafone access point - it will literally burn your money! Take a look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=298031 to get started with the Softbank AP. Also, with the Tytn II EMobile might be an option for you. They cater to the smartphone crowd, but you will only get a network in larger cities as their coverage is really bad at this moment.
Falk seems to understand the situation very well over here. Tytn and TytnII are both running on Softbank, and the processes to get them running here are well documented. Both of those also have the radio chips necessary to connect to Docomo - which is kind of like ATT over here: big, evil and expensive.
To answer your question, MMS is push email provided by the carrier. Since SMS doesn't work between carriers here, most Japanese just use MMS to correspond. It works with attachments and does all sorts of other cool, Japanese things.
Here's the thing with your situation though. AFAIK it is impossible to just get mobile service over here without also buying a phone. And, there are some really, really cool phones over here that you can't get anywhere else. Unlike WM, Japanese phones are 100% reliable and work very smoothly with the networks here - and almost all of them are bilingual with menus in Japanese and English. So unless you are a real WM junkie then you might think twice about shelling out the money for TYTN before coming.
I second that - if you stay for a longer time don't specifically buy a phone that will be of very limited use here in Japan. You can get SMS and voice calls to work easily, but MMS will give you a big headache and eat your data plan alive if you send a lot of picture (and other attachment) mails. There are some really nice "dumb" phones here and they have some great features for a very competitive price.
You can get a SIM card without a phone though. I just showed them my HTC Universal and they didn't discuss long. The employee just warned me right away to use internet with it. You can get your "White Plan" without a keitai and even enjoy the advantage of being able to quit their service anytime at month's end. Something that might make an expensive prepaid phone unnecessary.
The internet services you get with a Japanese cellphone are totally "walled garden" and if you're used to the freedom that a smartphone offers you will end up being disappointed. People here in Japan seem to be content to use their phones for mail, crippled Yahoo keitai web, some mixi and occasionally navigation. From the service cost perspective Japan unfortunately is a total backwater these days.
So in general, don't expect too much and you won't be too disappointed. Having free voice (from 1am until 9pm) and SMS available isn't half bad and way better than being without a cellphone. I could make that experience before I got my "foreigner card" and meeting friends always turned out to be an adventure in the more crowded places ;-)
Hi guys, thanks very much for your help. You guys really seem to know a lot about this so I hope you don't mind answering a few more questions I have:
Scenario 1: I take a UK Win Mo 3G device out to Japan with me.
- Am I correct in thinking that I can send keitai emails (mms) to my friends with this no problems? And also make phone calls.
- And that I will be able to use the Softbank white plan with it (understanding that I may need to buy a cheap phone and steal the SIM to get a contract set up)?
- I will be able to use the full internet if I want, but it will be very expensive.
Scenario 2: I buy a Win Mo device out there.
- It will have a Japanese OS. I will be able to flash it with UK langauge but I assume will invalidate the warranty.
- What kind of price will an X01HT or X01T be on the white plan (or other suitable one)?
- Any other drawbacks I should know about? Applications/features missing from UK equivalents?
Scenario 3: I buy a standard Japanese model.
- I will definitely need to be able to use bluetooth stereo (A2DP), play MP3s, videos, add at least an 8gb memory card
- Being able to check IMAP/POP email and browse the full web is important but not absolutely necessary, as is wifi.
- Decent camera would be nice, but not necessary
- Size is not really an issue, features are more important
- Are there any 1-seg channels in English? If so it may be nice.
- Suica/FeliCa is always welcome
- Can you guys recommend one? What kind of cost would I be looking at?
I absolutely love using Pocket Player and bluetooth stereo on my HTC Wizard at the moment, and would be gutted to lose them.
Again thanks a lot for your help guys, I really appreciate it. The mobile industry out there seems to be completely different to the UK!

[Need Quick Answers] T-Mobile Or O2 ????

Im going into town in an hour or so to get the sim card, and Ive been talking to some people about which one to get but I am not sure.
Tmobile (top up £10 a month and get 40mb internet a day and unlimited texts) is cheaper but apprently doesnt support tethering which really sucks (any way round that?)
O2 is £15 and apprently when you divide the useage up (per day) it comes to about 16mb, (500mb a month, can I use say,200 in one day, strictly speaking is that possible?) and then unlmieted texts but somebody on another post of mine (who seems to be afk for the last 12hours) said this:
o2 pay as you go is a very good deal but there pay as go setup is a nightmare as they use a proxy to stop pop3, so you have the choice of Web&MMS or Web&Email... I use Web&Email by using a different setup.
Click to collapse
I dont really understand what hes saying, is it that if I pick the first option, I dont get email, and vice versa with the mms if I pick the second one?
And overall whats the best one of those two to pick?
Thanks in advance, I really need quick replies :3
It means that on O2 the setup connection for pay as you go blocks getting email via phone "pop3\Impa4", unless you use a different setup that doesn't use the proxy then you can get email but not MMS as it seems to be going through the proxy.
Have explained the differences between the 2 in plenty of detail in other thread best bet is just get a SIM top it up and see how you go but i know that all have no teathering in the terms and conditions... That doesn't always mean you can't as Terms & Conditions apply to us but may not stop us...
On that note please don't make duplicate threads since only difference is T-Mo v's O2 instead of Orange v's O2, use the thread of topic already started.
Thread closed.
