MDA Compact upgrade - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Hi all,
I'm back from a while.
Finally got back to the Windows Mobile "scene".
I've got a MDA Compact now (Dutch version).
Unlocked it with the tool of itsme.
For that, many many thanks!!
I dont know if I can ask this and it soons a little n00b but I really want to know.
What rom is best to upgrade to?
What are the advantaged and disadvantages of the different roms.
Please explain why I should go for a particular rom.
And what's up with the bigstorage roms / hack?
Can anyone explain? What is the use of it?
I have a 1gb SD card, is it still handy to do the storage hack?
Can I expand my internal (system) memory with it?
sorry for all the questions but I feel like a n00b again with my new device...
Thanks for the help in advance!
(btw using a Dutch Orange simcard atm)

Come on

ok, im kinda n00b here as well, but lemme try to bring a little light to you:
radio 1.13 seems to be a must, the performance remarkable better compared to it's predecessors.
if you'd like an english version, the rom 1.12 can be used.
bigstorage, made easy:
there's about 32M of ROM wasted for a lot of CAB files that are only needed to setup your device after cold reset.
(by the way, most of this stuff is a waste of ressources anyway, depending on your device's brand)
copy these files to your hard drive, merge this ROM area to the "Storage" folder and you'll get a little less than 32M of NV memory.
Just now, i'm pretty into these procedures, cause i've gotta chinese O2 mini in asia, changed it to english, applied the bigstorage patch and made a lot of mistakes ;-)
so lemme know if you need futher assistance, i'll be glad to help.

Which ROM - Latest I-Mate or BigStorage?

Hi,
I wonder if you could advise which ROM is the 'best' one to upgrade to? I've had my T-Mobile UK MDA Compact for a few days, just backed-up the ROM, now need to decide which ROM I should move to. Current version is 1.01.00 WWE, Radio 1.00.10. So, will moving to anyone of the above 2 ROMs make a difference and what?
Thanks!
I've just ordered my QTek s100 so the same quesion is floating round my mind too...
IMHO if you're not experienced with flashing ROMs go for the imate upgrade. Trying the big storage might make you hate the JAM if something goes wrong
Having said that, I went for the Big Storage (not very experienced, but have a good idea).
Also, keep in mind that the Big Storage ROM will soon be out-dated unless someone finds a way to implement the same "hack" to newer ROMs (or Anansky returns to the forum).
Try the I-mate Rom first, the only difference is the storage. If you can live without big storage fine. Also you can try big storage once you are comfortable with your device.
yep go for the imate update (latest version is 1.11) which has better sound quality and more stable than the other.......
Great thanks for the tip - any idea where on the ftp site the rom is?

Downgrading from wm6 to wm5

I have my i-mate SP5 running wm6 Tornado Perfect English Edition as of now. However I want to downgrade it back to the official i-mate ROM as I'm parting ways with my SP5.
I have found this ROM on the club i-mate FTP. ftp://ftp.clubimate.com/i-mate_SP5_WWE_2.5.331.2.zip
Can I flash this ROM without modifying anything and get to back to the original ROM? I did the SuperCID when I was upgrading so is there anything similar I should do when I'm downgrading?
Any help much appreciated.
Just hard reset and run the RUU, or be safe, format BINFS first
Do you mean the file I mentioned above? Couldn't find RUU file on the club i-mate server.
RUU is basically the ROM im talking about here
From what I've seen, the stock ROMs (like the iMate one) are usually bigger than the cooked WM6 ROMs. So if you're uncomfortable with doing a format BINFS, you may be able to just download the file from the ftp site, and run it. You should be back to WM5.
Why are you going back anyway?
I'm also back at WM5... I tried to get along with the WM6 of Karhoe (who did a pretty good job) but I've got the problem with the time out delay at the incoming calls.
There I'm getting very much calls a day it was very frustrating to have that delay of 6-10 seconds...
Greetz
@Karhoe: I'm downloading the file I posted in the first post. That supppose to be the world wide english (WWE) version. What I'm trying to ask is that ROM only contain the OS, not the radio stack or IPL and other stuff? I just want it to return to the original wm5 OS while keeping other settings.
@bipinsen: Thanks for that. I got myself a iPhone and selling the SP5. I think it's better to sell with the original OS as there is more resources out there.
Basically most of the AKU2 ROMS contain a whole new IPL and radio stack I think, why don't you check with typhoonnbftool ?

Oooohhhh.. Now I'm envious!
I should think that selling it with WM6 should get you more buyers.
I look on Craigslist and rarely see WM6 phones. Annoys me. Part of why I chose HTC because I new I could buy it cheaper and upgrade it myself.
Just to update anyone who is interested I have downgraded using the ROM i mentioned in the first post. It was pretty straight forward; just have to run the installer.
@Exitao: I agree, but the buyer is more likely to find bugs in unsupported ROM. Now I have been using the wm5 ROM for few hours I notice how sluggish the official ROM is. Maybe I will give the buyer option to upgrade into the new ROM.
WM5 was always buggy, but so was WinCE3.0. Well, it is an MS product after all. They never got rid of the bugs, they just "upgraded" the OS.

Is there a HOWTO or a tutorial somewhere?

Hey guys,
Sorry for the extreme noobness of this post, but I am completely lost here. It appears that ROMeOS 4.1 is the ROM to get. But then I read that you need to install HardSPL first, then you need to pick the right radio and install that, but you need to be sure that it is the right radio for you, etc. None of this makes any sense at all to someone who has never done this before. Will I lose all the apps I've installed when I do this? If so, what is the best/easiest way to back them up so I can reinstall them after the ROM update? I also read that you need to install a keyboard fix, a screen freeze fix, and extra apps that came originally on the device need to be downloaded and installed.
I guess what I'm asking is, how do I make this $650 piece of junk that HTC won't support (they refuse to give me ROMs for it since I bought it through Amazon) into a device that is worth using with some simple step-by-step instructions? The speed and unreliability of it in its stock form for this price is completely inexcusable. I am very ready to make some donations as well.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you so much Kareem! That pretty much answered all my questions. Maybe I'm blind, but I did not see a link to that particular wiki in the stickied thread about tutorials. I think there should be a sticky in this forum with a title: HELP! I'm a noob and I need to flash my ROMS! With that link included.
Thanks again, you rock!
Oh, and I do have one last question, what radio has had the most reliability with the ROMeOS 4.1?
If you are looking for a section dedicated to n00bs, check out GWENI, linked in my signature. It was written for n00bs, by a self-proclaimed n00b.

According to Hang Tuah's (the creator of ROMeOS) post in the dedicated thread here: "I personally tried NEON 1.58.25.17, KAIS 1.65.24.36 & KAIS 1.71.09.01".
Hi, the trickiest part of the bussiness is to do the HardSPL, which will allow you to flash any ROM or radio.
Then, if you do not want to complicate your life too much, flash one of the HTC WM 6.1 official ROMs.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_ROMs
Or pick a cooked ROM that has all included (i.e. not Lite ROMs), operating system, Office, Windows Live, and a radio firmware.
hardSPL install is not tricky but its the MOST IMPORTANT thing you need to do. just follow the directions carefully and you will have no issues. Radios are personal preference BUT newer WM6.1 roms need the newer 1.65.xx.xx radios but again there is a whole thread explaining this also
enjoy your toy!
wow someone who posted with concern before bricking the device..and he did his homework as well he could before hand CHEERS!! As you'll quickly learn most noobs flash first, brick, then want the xda community to fix it without them having to do anything(like read). So I applaud you.
Heh. Thanks liquidfork. I'm pretty big into Linux and open source, so I know to read as much as I can find first and then attempt.
So, I did successfully flash ROMeOS 4.1 on my device after putting HardSPL 3.56 on it and the newest radio (forget the version offhand). It's blazing fast now. But, a small problem: When I try to restore my sprite backup, the phone will start up with the "bios" screen, but it just sits there and never boots. Now, Sprite backup complains that it needs a .sbu file that I can get from their website. I see nothing on their website about .sbu files. Is there any way to restore my stuff, or am I hosed? I do miss the HTC today screen and some of the utilities I had. I'd hate to have to roll back to an "official" ROM for this.
Thanks again for your help guys, this community is great.
Anyone? I would like to avoid reinstalling everything if at all possible. Thanks.

You cannot restore Sprite Backups from ROM to ROM. It is designed to restore your files and settings when doing a hard reset of reflashing the same ROM.
Sprite Backup does have a ROM Upgrade feature, but I've yet to see it work.
Through experimentation, I figured as much. That's too bad. I've come to find that while the ROMeOS is quite a bit faster than the WM6 that came on the device, it is very spartan. I've gotten used to the little gadgets in the HTC roms, particularly their today screen, some of the settings, and some of the utilities. I think I'm going to flash with a shipped WM6.1 from HTC and see how it works, I will try doing a Sprite backup restore on that as well, but I'm not holding my breath that it will work. Is there a huge difference in speed between the shipped HTC ROM and a cooked ROM? Better yet, is there a cooked ROM that gives most or all of the HTC functionality but is faster?

The perfect ROM is like the perfect beer. Everyone has their own opinions and taste.
However... I will say this. It is better to find a fast rom and then search these forums for the appropriate cabs for those applications you can't do without.
Not only will you only have the ops you want, but I have all those cabs on a secure digital card... then you use sashimi to load them when you perform a flash...
Because once you have done a flash... you will be doing more...
As they say on the TV about golf weenies... these guys are good... and there is always a new ROM that looks marvy.

True, I can see that now. I think the main thing I'm missing that I can't live without is being able to click in the upper right on the today screen and stop running processes from there. Especially since with ROMeOS 4.1, going into the task manager has locked up my phone twice now. If I can figure out how to get that functionality back, I think I can live with the rest. Is that functionality in the HTC home CAB that is in the extended cabs for ROMeOS? I'll probably install the CAB anyhow just to see.
Download and install this cab I've attached.
Heres a link to AllTheWays 4Shaered pages he's one of the mods on here. It has all the applications you're looking for.

Cooking using official Orange ROM as a base?

Hi Folks,
I'm pretty sure I'm going to get burnt asking this, but I can't find the answer anywhere.....help!
I've flashed planty of ROMs before (and really appreciate the effort from the folks cookin' 'em) but never 'cooked' my own.
I've got an Orange Branded TyttnII, so I tried the official 6.1 ROM they released recently. I actually really like it and it performs well.
There are a few really annoying things about it though. Like the version of HTCs homescreen they ship doesnt have the music tab, there are apps they install that I'm never going to use etc. etc.
So, I'd love to take the original update (or RUU_signed.nbh from it), pull it apart and make it my own.
I've read and watched everything I can find about cooking and I've done nothin but turn my brain to useless mush....
Please, could someone tell me (or point me in the right direction to find) how I can take this RUU_signed.nbh and rip things (packages, I guess?) out?
Thanks in advance!

WinMo6 upgrading: what about the risks?

Cheers guys,
[If you have little time, or don't want to read my story, just read the parts in bold. They are the most important.]
Got a G4 2.01 O2-branded Universal here. It's a wonderful device, but WM5 is getting really outdated. Most new software is coming out only for WM6, and RAM is low here (64MB total, 22.5MB free after soft-reset). I'm interested in flashing Tomal WM6.1 V8.9 Lite, but I am still afraid about the risk of bricking my dear Uni. (If it bricks, I won't have enough money for another device, and Unis are quite rare here in Brazil. Also, I just love my Uni, as many of you.) So, I still have some questions, and I think here is the perfect place to ask them.
1. What about the risks? How can I escape the bricking? I don't have an UPS here.
2. And how can I flash from an SD card? This seems a bit safer than doing it via USB without an UPS. Got a 2GB card here, and a 8GB SDHC, working via PsiDoc's driver.
3. Will the upgrade enhance my free RAM? Or at least keep it that way? (There's no one that upgrades the Uni's RAM to 128MB here in Brazil, and I don't want to disassemble my mainboard and ship it overseas. Afraid of breaking my device. Currently, free RAM after soft-reset is 22.5MB.)
4. When (if) I upgrade, I know my ROM will be cleared out. Got SPB Backup here, will this backup work under WM6.1? Are there any better ways to back my Uni up? I don't have any important documents on ROM.
5. Will everything work fine under WM6.1? Wi-Fi (with WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK), 3G, IR beaming, Bluetooth OBEX and A2DP, SDHC card support (most important, because I use a 8GB card), and stuff? (3G videocalling doesn't work under WM6.x, this I know, and since I don't use it, it's okay for me.)
6. What's the best WM6 ROM available over there? I've heard Tomal's versions are really good, and that's why V8.9 Lite is my first choice.
Thanks in advance.

Ok there is not that much risk as all of have upgraded our rom here... well if you follow the steps properly you will not brick your device... and Tomal's v8.9 is good, stable and fast and free ram more than your current...i haven't personally flashed from sd card but doing it from pc is also safe and fast.... and yes spb back up will work in 6.1... instructions here

YIPEEEE!
Just upgraded my Uni with Tomal V8.9. I was a little bit scared during the process but... It worked flawlessly! My Uni rebooted in ~2min30, now it boots in ~35sec! Free RAM now is 28.72MB! Thank you Rajiv for giving me confidence to upgrade and thank you Tomal for uploading such a great ROM!
