Benefits of WM2005 over WM2003SE? - General Topics

Hi all
I have a few questions.
Firstly, I have a Qtek 2020i - am I right in saying this is also the same as the HTC Alpine?
Secondly, is there an upgrade that will allow me to go from WM2003SE to WM2005?
Thirdly, why would I want to upgrade...what are the benfits reasons for doing so (I see alot of people getting excited about upgrading but I'm not clear on why?)
Fourthly (last one honest), A lot of people develop various little mods for the Today screen (like hiding the start bar) - what language are these developed in (C++, C#)?
Cheers

Why indeed? If the thing still does the same job as when you bought it, then why upgrade? I have a horrible feeling that like desktop OS upgrades, newer devices will handle the extras a lot better than older devices, so an upgrade may well make my phone slower and more prone to crashing.
I try and keep up with ROM patches but am not that bothered by the prospect of a whole operating system upgrade.

Gobbledegook ;-)

"Secondly, is there an upgrade that will allow me to go from WM2003SE to WM2005?"
no
"Thirdly, why would I want to upgrade...what are the benfits reasons for doing so (I see alot of people getting excited about upgrading but I'm not clear on why?) "
well people always thinks that new is good
"Fourthly (last one honest), A lot of people develop various little mods for the Today screen (like hiding the start bar) - what language are these developed in (C++, C#)?"
i think they are all don in c++ not sure if .net let you make today items
www.codeguru.com have some guides how one goes about writting them
and if you know c# then c++ is really not that hard

done some mild C++ at college last term so it shouldn't be too hard to pick up.
I'll take a look at that website aswell.

Attention all Chefs!

While I am new to this field of MDA/Wizard workings. I simply love the fact that there are many different chefs in the kitchens cooking up ROMs for us.
I think I have tried just about all of them on my unlocked 8125 (which I use on the T-Mobile network, and have for almost 1 year now - I LOVE IT). I am hoping to get a faster device soon, as being a power user, I tend to bog this one down.
While I love all the 'prepared' ROMs, here is what I would like to see (and I am sure there are others out there with the same request). I would love a end-all to end-all COOKBOOK (cooking guide). I would like to find a book/instructions on COOKING ROMs. I would like to give it a whirl, and build my own. While I love all the 'prepared' ROMs, many of them have features/apps that I will not use, and are missing ones that I do. Once they are part of the ROM, it appears that you cannot get rid of them.
I feel there should be a repository someplace of ALL VIRGIN (ORIGINAL/UNALTERED ROMs), i.e., WM5, WM6, WM6.1, and the various packages that can be added. Like going to a supermarket and getting the items for your favorite recipe. I mean, the whole idea of COOKING ROMs, and the proggies called KITCHENS, lets carry the idea further.
What does everyone think?
***** To all the CHEFS out there, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK - but remember as Chef Ramsey says "I am the best, you can only one day hope to be half as good as me!" Well, in order to be good, the best had to start off as simply good. *****
Hey you might want to look at the stickies at the top of the forum...
Kitchens are the way to go when building your own roms, and they have pretty in depth how-tos.. Pantry is where to go for the packages.. also stickied.
Look up near the top, and you will find the tools. Learning to use them takes time.
One VALID complaint I have is that people have stopped posting the cooking packages - that is, their dumps of whatever kitchen they are using.
You CAN rip apart an existing rom for a starting point, but there are often problems with doing it (missing pieces, etc) which you then have to resolve or the ROM you cook won't work. In some cases (particularly with 6.1) the XIP won't extract AT ALL which makes for lots of hacking around.
It would be nice if chefs posted their kitchens so we could modify too...... a lot of ROMs are close, but would be perfect with a few more inclusions...
as far as packages are concerned, I make my own from cab files, other peoples kitchens (maybe when I have time to rummage through.. You can also simply request a package on the kitchen tools thread, an I'm sure that we are a sharing peoples.
As far as kitchens, I would recommend finding Faria's to start with. It is extremely simple. All you have to know is that you have a limited amount of space.
As far as the kooking manual:
The WIKI is what you are looking for I got all the information I needed there.
yes it is faria that is easy to use though others prefer hypercore
it is always the preference of you if you like to cook in what kitchen
for me oem is the hardest part thou others find it easy what I hope is that there will also be a stickies on how to
there is a OEM creator
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2089816#post2089816
it would be better if you can also ask for a short tutorial on doing that
Thank You in Advance for all your replies; I will address each one separately:
::Zack84a:: I have been through many of the STICKIES, and I find that many of them are a big mess of babble. While there are some interesting post there, they the concept of linear thought is disconjointed and often bordering on chaos. I would be more than happy to post an illustrated and in depth KOOKBOOK (so to speak) if I can simply get a handle on some of the aspects and theories.
::Genesis3:: I have downloaded several of the kitchens, and unpacked them in different locations on my computer. They all have a multitude of folders, and files within them. I am a very advanced Windows user, and I find it hard to believe that there is not something out there, like the Windows XP or VISTA (joke) installation CD/DVD where you can install the OS to a PPC and customize the install. You would then have to add the little apps to make the PPC your own. Much like installing XP and choosing to use IE, NETSCAPE or FIREFOX for your browser (or one of the other dozen or so out there). It seems that there is not a single post of a COMPLETE and UNALTERED ROM out there for any version. Surely there has to be one someplace. It would also be nice to see a CONCISE and COMPLETE glossary of the terms, and perhaps not written by just one CHEF - but a joint effort.
::Character:: I would agree with you and Genesis3. Perhaps the CHEFS need to start posting (or making available) the complete (uncooked kitchen of their ROMs). This would allow a budding CHEF to play with its nuances and learn what taking a piece out does, remember you can always add more salt to a recipe - but you can never take it back out.
::S.V.I.:: Ahh, saved you for last. I am currently running your latest "901" posting on my WizardA100 (CINGULAR 8125 but being used on T-Mobile), and I LUV IT so far. I had to tweak it a little for myself, add some sounds (that I like), install BATTERY STATUS, and turn on my TODAY items. I am debating an upgrade in June. My contract with T-Mobile is up then. This phone is a hand-me-down from a friend who got a new Q. I loved it so much when he had it, he gave it to me. I have been using the Original T-Mobile MDA 2.26 ROM for so long and wanted to go to 6.0 or 6.1 (which I have been reading so much about). I came to this forum and I think that I have tried about 30 different ROMs so far. Some of them are NICE, some are PRETTY, and one of them would not do anything after 2 minutes from a HARD BOOT. The TODAY screen would come up, and if you let it sit for 2 minutes or longer...nothing worked; no buttons, nothing on the screen, had to SOFT RESET. That one got dumped right away. I would really love to learn from the MASTER CHEFS out here, and being a fast learner - think I would someday make a good chef too.
If I decide to get another PPC device, which one do you think would be good? I know there are 400MHz models out there, and they seem appealing...but I love the HTC Wizard (and its cousins). The phone I am still trying to figure out who made/makes it - is the one from the NEW KNIGHT RIDER MOVIE (the one the bad guy used). It had the coolest screen - looked almost Holographic or LCARS (Star Trek looking). I am surprised that there is not a ROM out here with that theme (LCARS the ST:TNG touch panels).
Okay, enough rambling. I hope that someone will help me go to chef school.
here is what I learned (having successfully cooked my first rom) and may be you will find it usefull when you decide to make a new rocksteady tutorial:
I learned that the color codes in this machene a re a variation of the same stuff as HTML; but with unpredictable results. the only code that works is basic collors, and not very many variations. I learned that reading this rom's RGU's and XML's (provxml's as well) is pretty self explanatory. If you can read the registry, and have enough common sense, it becomes easyer with every hack you put into it. For me it is all trial and error. Last night I spent untill noon trying t get my splash screens to work, and when I finally got it right, I realized that it is not that hard afterall. It is just the initial shock of :
"What tha f--- does THAT mean?!"
I think that most people are getting intimidated by all this jargon, as well as some cooks who have had enough of answering the same (not supid) questions over and over again. They all say: "please refer to this post" and link it. which often times seems pretty cold. However, it takes quite a bit of time and effort to find and link the post in question, and in fact it is a benevolent gesture, not an arrogant reply.
There are thousands of people making posts. ofcourse the information is going to get distorted and chaotic.
I have to say this though: cooking is not difficult (I paint, draw, and make costumes for theatre) I don't come from a tech bakground. If I can do it, than anyone who can put 2+2 together and justify the outcome as 5 or greater; can do it too. lol
I really hope that someone will be able to put together a deffinative cookbook together. someone who can teach, has the time and the patience to go through it step by step, in a language that even george bush can understand. Maybe that person is you (?)
well said...
i think a lot of us would like to make a thorough guide, but oh where's the time? we're all too busy making roms there's a number of good guides for basic kitchen use, but finding the detailed info past making packages is very difficult...
209 seems pretty damn stable, maybe it's time....
My biggest problem with the current 6.1 stuff (using Hypercore) is that neither using it OR some of the other bundled tool sets have I been able to take one of the existing builds and get a clean XIP.
So my cooking produces a ROM that works great but has a wrong version number. Not a huge deal, but......
I believe that this has to do with the nb0 that you are using, not the xip. and there is a very complicated tutorial about it on the wiki. I haven't been able to figure it out.
I dod notice, that when I ised the smaller nb that came with the kitchen the numbers match up.
You can hack the os number. If you have the xip that you should have, you should be able to change the version number of any nb0 using a hex editor.
Well I can split the .nb into the proper files but when I run the XIP extraction tool on it the tool HANGS!
It prints nothing at all and sits - forever.
Anyway I got an XIP directory that extracted properly from an earlier 6.1 build and it works; I've not had the ROMs I've cooked thus far with it (using "slim" as the base) do anything evil, but it bothers me that I'm running a hybrid like this.
When I was cooking 6.0 I had a hybrid that worked well but it took me several weeks to get something that was MOSTLY stable, and it still had some nasty RAM leaks. On the other hand most of the leaks were in the POP3 email support, which I use HEAVILY. IMAP has some problems with my server that make it unusable (Specifically I can't send using it) so I'm stuck to some degree.
Overall however I've got a decent 6.1 ROM; I've not yet "published it" as I need to get back in there and remove the custom funky tahoma font sub default and also put my own "branding" on the startup screen...... but it runs and is very stable.
If I do release it I'll do so WITH the kitchen pack so it can be cooked on further by people. One of the reasons I really like cooking my own is that to the extent I can put apps into the base ROM I don't use up program memory.
ARGHHHHH!!!!! My Brain Hurtz
All these damned terms: XIP, .NB0, .NBK, OEM, SYS, Na-Nu Na-Nu, etc.
This is what I want to clear up. I am willing to do my best in creating a DEFINATIVE/PROFESSIONAL KOOKBOOK, but I need to lear some of these terms. How's about we start a GLOSSARY someplace. Start listing words and definitions someplace and all the CHEFS add to/expand on them??
While I am like SVI, I have 3 jobs, but I find that I have a lot of WAITING time in front of my PC, while another one is doing something - I would love to start compiling ROMS, I have over 1TB of storage space available. If anyone wants to send them to me, with a complete description, contents, versions etc. Perhaps I can create a repository for all of them and HOST them. I dunno. Just trying to do something constructive. I could sit here for days reading these posts and never get all the ROMs, patches, updates, applications etc. Geez if there was a simple FTP location with all of them!!!
Okay, Okay - getting off soapbox so that I can bang my head on it.
Much Thanks to everyone!
Upgrading???

first thing i look inside a rom was dsm, certificate dates and other things..
( the only ROMS versions i have doubts are 20755 and 20753 seems at last in part real.
But i do this posts in a provocative way.
More about this **** crippling in imagefs, in nk.nbf they are doing to "PROTECT THEIR WORK" ( GUESS WHEN MICROSOFT WILL PROTECT THEeir WORK SAME WAY PLUS LAWYERS AND OTHER THINGS) FROM OUR ( OR SENYOR MEMBERS REALLY DO THE HARD JOB) reENGINEERING.

Soon, WITH the poorly SUPPORT i have. iam to release a kind of kitchen for our unis. Not new at side of discovery, not new at side of drivers. Using the well know tools.
But more to do new peoples, play with this things, do stupid obvious question and maybe after some time this NOT MORE stupid person was attracted by play with this, write something or do a BRILLIANT new discover for us.
but at last iam trying to put a fresh air here.. not closing forums with languages or cript things...

A LITTLE EDIT..
About this crazy new numbers versions.
for US, UNIVERSAL, if no one start to try port THINGS REALLY MATTER, like OEM PACKAGES, DRIVERS ( like phonesettings from newer devices).
just upper XIP/SYS with new numbers will show GREAT, but it is something cosmetic in most part..
What matter is someone do a HELL HACK in XIP to speed bost our devices, or MERGE all PIECES of RAM IN ONE I MEAN FLASH DISK AND STORAGE), DO A HELL HACK in OUR GSM DRIVER TO EVEN GET THE BASIC ENGINNER MODE WORK and we have use of cell towercode. DO A CRAZY MOD IN OUR BT DEVICES to become CRAZY NEW.. DO A MORE THAN CRAZY CRAZY VODOO and besides upgrade 128 MEGS but 256megs. PORT THE CRAZY DRIVERS FROM NEWER DEVICES TO TAKE ANY KIND OF ADVANTAGE FOR OUR UNIS, SAME NOT HAVE NEW AWESOME GPU/OMAP/AT/NVIDIA CHIPSET INSTRUCTION.

Understanding your point , the problem came from many cookers who dump rom and recooked never mention base rom came from where , special PDAVIET,some of us working hard to get new build working with old devices but what we got ? nothing , we can share with our work but who care ? from long time ago darkforcesteam release some of build without protection after three days that build all of place ( which I release 5 different languages) , did they said base rom came from DFT ? no , nothing at all , seems thier work and ask for donation , we never ask for donation , we are working for free but even a little be "Thank your hard work" no one want to say that's why we start add protection,we was here long enough and help this COMMUNITY,
if you can read Chinese see here http://www.darkforcesteam.com/showthread.php?t=351, we will release 20758 for Uni WWE/CHT next week , of couse will be had protection.
see here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=436821 does he mention where base rom from ? 20758 was we working a month to got that .

I already know your viewpoint and from other persons about this to.
I already have work stolen and even fired after this and the company used my work with another name( under justice now )..
But its the risk of all this.
Again.. imaginate if Linus Tovalds stop the kernel just because companies use some code inside a program or already the entire KERNEL and receive BIG MONEY for that. ( iam speaking REALLY BIG MONEY and this really happens all time).
The spirit of SHARE sometimes need to be little more than that.
when i start something i think. Humm, iam doing this for money, for personal use, to hobby or for GLORY?
If iam doing something for money. and someone use my work. Its matter of justice. I NEED RECEIVE FOR THIS...
If iam doing this for fun, hoby.. damn.. the time i spend trying to understand something or do work was the cool point of all, someone used this and never speak about me? so.. problem of this person. I know the risk of do something and turn public. who know what i do, is enough to do BETTER what was better ( the CHALLENGE by itself).
If iam doing this for personal use ( to prof myself iam GOOD A LOT), i even mentioned this to someone.
If iam doing something for GLORY THEN, of course i want everyone speak my name... but is not usual in my formation. Because this i become sad..
And same you can look about this here at xda forum.
from a time to now. besides some devices still very active.. others are failing down ( not because are old), but because the refuse of what EXIST and was shared sometime not be around any more. BECOME HARD.
Of course i can search and learn like who discover first time..
but reinvent the reinvented wheel. its loose time. Its put a happiness in develop something UTILE, in the sadness of doing something standard. so i close my knowledge and another one come to try to, start everything again.
What we need to know is for what purpose we are doing what we are doing. if this is for money, you are correct in protect your work and be sad and even do more things to protect this. but if it is for FUN? get something " RE ENGINE" put to work better.. huuu... lets to do it better then, everyone.. OPEN...
**** who get this use and not mention who made staling the work or even putting at EBAY ( already find it at ebay) . GOOD JOB FOR this person.. hope
the best friend of him do the same with the her wife .
My intent writhing this things is not to FLAME anything, but share a VIEW POINT. other persons do it to.. and maybe the GOODNESS from TOOLS AND PORTS look we are here to, the small ones.., that like to try play and have funn to..( the fun is not just write the rom to device, but play with the rom) and maybe one day EVEN BECOME A A GOD and start to contribute with REAL Things to community.
Another thing. Already is working to close this way the roms?

Already is working to close this way the roms?

nice post start like you as I said before we will release WWE version next week , BTW we play rom for fun not for money , even our forum not ask for donation and no AD in there, we knew its risk to post new build rom maybe one day we all been ask close it by "BIG GUY" and knew some "BIG GUY" was watch us .
hey guys,
this is really how things in this world are.
You do something for the people and other people will sometimes not even thank you, eventually they will steal your hard work and brand it under their name.
We have to live with that. That's how it works.
I know very good, how much time mwang and team invested into these ROMs. And it's not that easy to port the whole **** for old device like UNI is.
So as you said above FRITZ, before one even starts to do something, he must be clear about "why i am doing this?" question.
Anyway, the true ROMs for UNI are delivered by DarkForcesTeam. Everything else is recooked stuff.
All cookers should however mention, where they get the original from (as we used to do back in the good times) and give credits to original.
That will make everyone happy.
take care

AGAIN ABOUT STOLEN WORK..
WELL, why not in place cript something.. BRAND SOMETHING? PUT WAHTERMARKS.
starting by the screens, lather HEX names in codes and go on?
Soo, to get rid of this the STOLEN GUY will need to learn what you do very well. and at this point will start contribute to. more one looking a CODE mean LESS ERROR IN A CODE and MORE IDEAS COMMING. and even YU STOLEN IDEAS FROM THIS PERSONS.
When you port this crazy roms for US from, more crazy sources ( maybe a direct link with GOD?) .. PUT WHATERMARK IN EVERYTHING possible..
and let us poor guys ( this poor was for good now not bad).. get ride of this.. do WE HAVE WORK TO. STOLE TO STOLE, LET THIS be more hard for who do it, and put fun for who want to learn..and get rgus, modules and everything to play around.

[PLEA] I'm so confused about all the similar ROMs now!

I've been a regular reader of these forums since researching my first Android purchase. Over this time I have seem many new ROM projects born. I would like to argue that many of these projects are so similar that they are pointless.
I'm calling out anyone whoever made a new Hero/HTC-Sense ROM. Seriously. When you saw the 10 other Hero guys out there, what made you think it was better to release your own flavour instead trying to participate in an existing project?
I've taken a look, and as far as I can tell, there should only be 3 non-factory ROM projects:
- CyanogenMod, because of the effort Steve goes to stay 100% legal and teeter on the bleeding edge of Google's source code
- 1 Hero/Sense UI ROM, because we actually only need 1, why don't you guys work together, sheesh
- 1 Blur rip-off ROM, because goodness knows there are going to be people who actually think it's a great idea
Just because Android is based on Linux, doesn't mean we have to make all the same mistakes that has dogged and doomed Linux from the beginning. We don't need to splinter into a billion different distributions, at least not yet. Looking at the feature lists for many of these similar ROMs, the only thing that is different is additional locales or small bug fixes, hardly worth the effort of repackaging. /sigh
*end nerd rage*
i doubt they end. its their project, they build it how they like it and they share it. people do not have to download it. there are many reasons why they release their own, they have more freedom to do what they want. in past rom devs work together then they split up due to differences. working together is all fine and good but this isnt a utopian world haha, people have different opinions on how to move forward with a project.
just because you dont want to download and try different builds dont mean they should stop

I understand how you feel, but isn't that what this site is for? If we only had those three ROM's, then this would be a very boring site. I personally like when people take other ROM's and tweak it to their liking. I don't have a clue on how to cook ROM's, but others do, and they might make one that fits my needs. Just my opinion though....

As a regular reader you should know that there are about 5 different versions of Hero floating around to base off of. There are 2 different versions of blur. There is also pulse, donut, cupcake, and variations on them.
Hero includes: Tattoo (a specialized mix of donut and sense), the sense ui merged with magic, the official release Hero, the non-official beta Hero, and the Sprint Hero. (And if you ever read the threads, we do all work together) There are also multiple opinions on BFS and a2sd, which allows for variations.
Blur has both a Hero and a Cyanogen based version, depending on which way they decided to go to get the supporting files for the main system.
The rest are obvious, and I don't feel like going into that much detail.
If we all followed your beleif, updates would take twice as long and not have nearly as many features. Rather than Drizzy, JustAnotherCrowd, Cyrowski, and myself all waiting for the one day we all have 2 hours to meet on google talk, share files, and build an update... JAC relelases an update, Cyrowski writes a new boot image, I restructure the way a2sd operates, and Drizzy comes along and adds in some new apps he restructured to work on that build. Some people choose to stop somewhere along the path and stick to that ROM, others go all the way down the road. If there were only one update, most Devs would spend half the day just telling people how to disable, remove, or add the feature they integrated.
I just dont see how less is more in this case. If you don't like all the updates, do what I do. I have the ones I actually read followed, and I only ever take a quick glance at the first page of posts before checking those. If I miss anything important, it is only ever by a day. If it's that important, it inevitably gets bumped to the first page long before it becomes so old that I surely learned it somewhere else.

Hehe.
Okay, I get that there's a matrix of every possible version of Android against every different sort of UI (ie Hero+Donut, Blur+Cupcake, etc). My shortlist is obviously too short. But it's difficult to pick out, for example, the best Hero ROM. And I can see the same thing happening with Blur as it becomes more and more in vogue.
Watching 3 different Hero versions, you might decide that ROM A almost perfectly suits your needs except for the bug that only got fixed in ROM B. And ROM C has both the features and the bug fix, but has an ugly custom UI somewhere. So then you think to yourself "why don't I just make package D?". The only way you'll know anything for sure is to spend time trying out however many different ROMs knowing very well that there's a chance you'll be forced to compromise. The only differences between many of these ROMs seems to be the Android version, pre-installed applications and custom kernels.
I know I came off fairly irate and impetuous in my original post. But when you can see all these talented developers producing so many different forks and reproducing so much effort, it can be very frustrating for an enthusiastic end user.

i appreciate your input on these forums as well as drizzys and jac's
im glad there are multiple possibilities so i can see which one runs the best for my intended uses

when party b may use their phone for calls email and business
party A is using XXXHerorom that runs his needed functions the quickest and most efficient way possible

I don't agree and don't understand your frustration. You use what you want to use, let other people make their own decisions.
I happen to prefer Enomther's roms because they are more customizable in terms of what is included on the rom through the expansion pack and expension pack setup. I don't like arbitrary modifications as I prefer to have my phone close to vanilla Android but have performance improvements added. But going by your opinion it should not exist. Who are you to determine which rom's are pointless? I really don't understand the fuss. Different people have different preferences. If you prefer limited/no choice get an iPhone.
Unfortunately each Rom runs differently on each phone. My friend has the blurry screen problem while I dont. He can only run a few selected roms some of which doesn't do what he wants to do. I have gone though about 30 different roms before settling on one and quite frankly I think its pretty fun. I am on the bleeding edge of. techology.
I wish I would make a Rom. I have so many ideas for one.
The concern about multiple builds makes sense, but other folks have mentioned that different builds fix different things.
I've tried many of the Hero flavors, but sadly (unless I simply missed it) none of them have fully gotten bluetooth to work. I prefer using bluetooth for calling, and so far only Cyanogenmod's roms seemed to be able to nail this on the head. It's what I've been using for quite some time, and has proven to be the quickest and most stable.
It would be great if they all worked on just one version of the Hero rom, but it won't happen. Just imagine how many more are going to pop up when the official SenseUI shows up for the Saphire.
Eh
I completely disagree with the OP. Everyones needs are different and having a build thats just right for you is a luxury that you wouldn't get on most other types of phones. I really don't see an issue with having multiple builds even if they are fairly similar. Its not like we are wasting development time, there is no downside. Some may argue it makes it harder for users to find a good rom, but the bottom line is anyone who is flashing their android phone has an interest in technology and is going to enjoy trying out different builds. And once you've tried a few builds you get a pretty good idea of what your looking for in your ideal build making it much easier to choose. Using your Linux example, between work and home I use 3 different distributions everyday, the reason being each has strengths that make it ideal for specific applications, its not a problem or a mistake, its simply not everyones needs are the same.
Even for the novice like me it is not too hard to make sense out of what is available. I never liked when people do not read full thread before posting a question. Is it a problem of impatient generation or just a simple laziness? IDK.
Also, it has been a exiting jorney for me to learn everything about my phone and tremendous possibilities. Fear of bricking and yet the desire to try new stuff.
There are useful bits and pieces in almost every thread except yours, sorry to say that. There is nothing that can replace user's feedback and their own disoveries that are not necessarily coming from devs or people remotely in the field of android development.
Cease the proliferation of similar ROMs!
Click to collapse
I also disagree with this thread. More choice is better for everyone!
Also if there are 2 similar roms, as a user rather than a dev you can still take the bits you like from both and make it your own.
jokeyrhyme really? have you made any roms or customized anything for your personal use? if so did you like it? if not, how come you didnt make one custom rom? is it because you dont know how or just rely on others to do it for you? there are soooooo many ppl with different "styles, perceptions and ideals" that one extra rom might be their next rom of choice!! whats wrong with a larger amount of variety? who gives you the right to try and call everyone out when they are the ones spending the time to learn, make and fix all the bugs for everyone when it started off for them selves?!?!? this thread is a joke and is taking up space in development. request for it to be moved to the trash or general. which ever is easiest.
WTF?
Ok at this point i'm kinda getting sick of this whole android forum. Way to much fighting, ignorance, complaints like damn who gives a **** (sorry just vex) who does what or doesnt do what or makes what or doesnt make what. If you dont like something...move onto the next. I mean those who alert the devs/cookers (whatever you choose to call them ) to issues with the rom only for the betterment of the rom are in the right. But when i see dumb **** like "this person's rom does this and that" i get pissed..just reflash that rom sit down shut up and think about that little life of yours that obviously is worthless since you can spend time downing people's work and yet you can make a rom or troubleshoot a rom on your own. Y'all need to relax yourselves find **** that works for you and stick wit hit. If it aint what you want..move on silently. dont fault the creator just move the hell on. Dont post dumb threads like this and most off DONT SAY ****!!! it's these very same forums dedicated to development of our devices that make our devices that much more amazing so dont flood the forum with dumb ****!!!. Show respect to our developers, give em props for taking time out of their lives to make our android experience benificial and super amazing.
I also disagree with OP's sentiment. I'd rather there be as many ROMs as possible than to have my choice restricted to a handful.
And daeshawn you're right, some people are so rude and unappreciative. I just ignore the douchebags and try to contribute as positively as I can.
I completely understand what you're saying. These forums can be really overwhelming at first. But honestly, I enjoy switching between different builds of Android just to see what they're like. Some people want APPS2SD, some don't. Some people want to split FAT32/EXT3/Swap, some don't. There are simply too many combinations for a small set of ROMs to handle.
sigh..... guess well never find the middle of the tootie pop
If a middle ground were to exist it could go something like this:
Everyone can do whatever they want as far as their ROMs go. Perhaps, for new people who might otherwise be overwhelmed with choices, the Q&A (if it doesn't already) could link to a few long-running, stable ROMs that typically accomplish the very basics. And once people get a chance to try those, figuring out what you want becomes a little simpler and the tons of threads start making some coherent sense.
It's like "which is better, Cyanogen's rendition or Enom's" and the answer, for a lot of people, is that it depends. There might be similarities and both ROMs ultimately accomplish a lot of the same things (root, A2SD, compcache, linux swap, etc.) but preferences remain. I like one, you like another. There's no reason both developers, each of whom presumably likes their own, can't go on making what they want to make and offering it out there. More over, the experienced users are already aware of the alternatives.
It's really newbies that might find the choices overwhelming.
As for reinventing the wheel with every ROM, many threads already provide credit to a variety of developers, so clearly the work gets around. Just because they all do it at their own leisure and in the order of their choosing doesn't mean the developers are living in closed bubbles. Maybe the colab work that needs to be done is already being done even if it's not obvious. More over, even if two ROM cookers decide to both implement similar changes apart from each other, the choice to do so is totally in their court. Their time and their money and their brains.
There is kind of, for me, a question of stability. I have a fair confidence, for example, that Cyanogen is not going to drop Android development entirely any time soon and his ROMs will continue to exist with updates and bug fixes. Other developers share this sense of stability, but it's not an all around type of thing. There are ROMs out there now that are interesting because they are cool and new, but will they still be maintained a year from now is another question entirely. And I think that's a legitimate concern and reason for wanting at least a few long-lasting ROMs. Because, essentially, if 5 devs work on something and one gets bored, there's still 4 left. Conversely, if there's only one dev and he/she decides they're done, now what?
Just my $.02
I've no issue with the number of roms.
however, what is missing is a simple resource that lists them and a summary of features.
trying to wade through all the post to see what does what is a total ball ache. I think this is more the problem than the number of roms.
An up to date one pager that showed the current status of what was available would be perfect.
Well, I totally deserve all the hate this thread has brought my way.
*bows head in shame*
I agree that if there was ever a place to test out dozens of difference features, then this is that place. So it's totally appropriate to have as many different ROMs as there are demands for different features and such.
I do think more could be done to draw new users towards stable and long-term projects, as has been suggested by sleepykit and moa77. Maybe that's really the solution I was after. An update to the listing or something perhaps?
Sorry about being a poohead, I'll be good now.
*hugs all round*
PS. I changed the topic title to be less evil and more open.

[Q] Help Needed developing newest battery tweak

Collin_ph here. I've been working for literally months trying to get my battery tweak on the android market. The problem is that I don't do front end java development.. or should I say, I never have done it before. I have 2 full time jobs as a developer and a business owner and really don't have time to learn another language and framework. I'd LOVE to work with someone who A. is Experienced, and B. Has the time to work on something like this.
The next version really is going to be great, I just think it's time to get it on the marketplace so it's compatible with more than just certain ROMS on the Hero. I know it's technically possible.. I know the ins and outs of making it work, I'm just way behind on making a pure android app. If anyone really really wants to help, let me know. I'm wanting to make a profitable app on the market, and I want someone who'll share in the vision and the profits. There'll always be a free version, especially for XDA users. If you're interested, please PM me. This will make 3 times I'll be starting over because developers don't really have time to work on the project. If you're like me, you know this has potential.
Let's do it
collin_ph, will there be a shell script version of new battery tweak too, yes?
i think shell script is efficient and stable enough for me and i don't want to install an android java app.
love your tweak!!

LOL, with JM throwing his hat in the ring, you KNOW you're gonna have a winner!
A huge thanks to both of you guys!
In the long run, I really don't have any plans to continue the shell version. There are a lot of misconceptions about the shell version-- a lot of people think that there is no process that continues running, however, there is. I have a plan to have a very similar setup with the java version that should still have a small cpu and memory footprint.. possibly even smaller CPU usage as the Java version can be event based rather than timer based. Anyway, just know that I will do whatever possible to make the program fulfill its need the best and most efficient way possible. With Java, we can be usable on more than just a hero without having to port it every time, we can run on different roms without porting, we'll be able to run more things event based and remove most of the timer based things (if not all), and lastly, we'll be able to do things that we weren't able to do in shell. I'm excited for the new version, but as always, it's job is to make the phone faster and give it better battery performance. The new version will most likely be called "tweak tool", as Battery optimization will be only one of its functions, but the most important.
Anyway, after Easter, I'll be sitting down and going over a plan for the new version (once more). Hopefully we'll get a full blown launch out of this attempt.

I say Hooah!!
Haha. I'm excitied. Hopefully you two will join together. This is gonna be outstanding! Ha. Yea I know I'll shut up.
I'll have to learn how to write Android apps. Already know Java.
Can't be that hard after modifying Android source, right?

If you set up Eclipse, there is a lot of help/examples available. App Inventor is another tool that might be an option, perhaps less flexibility, but a "block" oriented approach that does a lot of the work for you.

I've tried appinventor and as a developer, it feels totally bass ackwards. I'm no java developer, but I've already put together a couple of tests in eclipse, which is the direction I want to go-- especially since I'll be doing everything in my power to make sure it's optimized.

Holy crap, if you AND jaybob are going to help collin_ph, this app is as good as gold. You two are by far two of the most dedicated and steadfast devs I've ever known on XDA.
Excited to see what comes out of this, happily willing to buy any app that comes out of it as support

Definitive Linux dualboot thread

Where can you find this grey area, where WP7 owners are meeting with Linux/Ubuntu developers to wrap up this dualbooting issue for once and for all?
Take a look at the Project HaRET thread -

If you must have droid and WP on the same device this is probably the most sensible option and more likely to be usable on a number of devices. Dual Booting will mean the need for a new bootldr, HaRET does not, just full unlock or perhaps even WP7 Root Tools v.12 beta will do the job, assuming it can be made to work
if, theoretically, the linux kernel has been run on the HD2/HD7 hardware, it stands to reason that anything from 1stgen wp7 and up should be kicking ass and taking names in terms of running the Ubuntu mobile version. Take that fact, add it to fact that having a first gen device means that youre too old to upgrade and too powerful not to upgrade. Warranties have expired and are therefore moot. Each device should have a HaRET section tucked away somewhere.

the HD2 was a very unique device though, in terms of dual booting it was only because we had the HSPL update and the secondary bootloader MAGLDR that gave us any hope at all in doing it, both of those are tightly controlled and we dont have access to adapting them to other devices and perhaps more importantely we dont have the knowledge base to do it ourselves. IRC, HaRET worked fine on the HD2 but only after a huge amount of work by some of the brightest members on the forum and a large community that was able to support them
Then we had the Android Boom, which diluted the talent base, simply put, we now have two problems
A, Many of the big names have gone to android and couldnt care less about WP
B, The people left here are largely unable to help, not for want of trying but because many of us dont know how we can help
Thats not saying we dont have any talented people here, far from it, in fact i think we have some of the best, BUT even the best need help and if the community isnt able to support them, then their struggles will be that much harder.
For HaRET we need someone who knows what they are doing to "Manage" the project, to direct and teach others. That is a very time consuming roll and i wouldnt blame anyone for saying they wouldnt have the time to do that.
Personally i couldnt care for Android on our devices but that isnt the point of what xda is about, development is what its about
And you could use the HTC Sensation XL software for example the HTC Titan (same hardware (minor differences))
I want Linux Ubuntu on my device, that's the bottom line. Years ago I started a thread about running Win 98 on WM6.1 devices using the Bosch emulator, three years later, I'd like to think the rhetoric has changed. The people who have any real info on the matter aren't saying anything definitive, that's hacker talk for ' We know something, but we can't state it officially'. I'm gonna 'leave' the matter alone now. Great ROM btw ,Sianto. Can you recommend a backup program that won't leave me in the dust? Last time I backed up I couldn't recover the files.

Well, I tried to backup with a lot of tools. But I didn't find a proper working onen yet. However, uploading your pictures to skydrive is one. Reïnstaller takes a while but wurks fantastic. And my rom should have some backup features build in as well.
I actually have spend some time building the sensation xl rom for the titan, but it didn't work out
Regards
Sianto
So, have you stopped already? I really want to help, and one of the reasons is to make things even with MS. So tell me what I need to do! HTC Titan user!
1. HTC first Gen has a good hardware environment.
2. There are ways of accessing the memory.
3. There are means of creating virtual kernels, partitions, etc.
4. There are OS's designed to run in these environments.
5. WP7 has a deadbeat dad.
And this means??
It means all the ingredients are in place to create a brand new subforum and niche market. Not unlike finding a new OS to port to an "old" device.
So do that. And your phones will be legends!
Any news?
Seen the Ubuntu article in the portal? Hmmm....
No, whats it about?
