OK, I've got two JAM's (backup for my boss in case he loses his, no joke, a definite possibility), so I've got the luxury of doing some playing with the spare. These are both 900/1800/1900mhz versions of the JAM bought before the 850mhz version was even available.
I was installing various radios (1.01, 1.05, 1.10, 1.11) seeing which is best. See xda-developers for instructions. I've got T-mobile sims in both JAMs.
I installed 1.10 radio (850mhz version) on the spare JAM, and I liked the speed with which it acquired a signal. Also the signal seemed to hold slightly better in my office, than the 1.05 radio version on my JAM, with both side-by-side.
So I do a little network check, by manually checking for available networks between the two sitting side-by-side. Well the 1.10 radio pops up and gives T-mobile and Cingular as options. And the 1.05 radio pops up with T-mobile and AT&T wireless only. Now I'm pretty sure Cingular in my area is only 850mhz, which would seem to be confirmed by this little test. Of course I can't connect to it, as the sim is T-mobile.
So I go get a Cingular sim from an employee, and pop it in the 1.10 radio JAM and do the manual network check, and Cingular and T-mobile again pop up as options. I pick Cingular and walaa, it connects with about 3 bars. I can make and receive phone calls. The upper right corner of the phone pad says Cingular as well. I then remove the Cingular sim and pop it in my 1.05 radio JAM. I do the manual network check and the only options which appear are AT&T wireless and T-mobile. I can connect to AT&T wireless but have only one bar.
So to recap, I put the Cingular sim in the 1.10 radio JAM (850mhz radio on device which is supposedly only 900/1800/1900mhz) and I can connect to Cingular. I put the Cingular sim in the 1.05 radio JAM (900/1800/1900mhz radio and device) and I can only connect to AT&T wireless not Cingular (it says AT&T wireless in upper right corner of phone pad).
To me, this means that the 900/1800/1900mhz JAM is really 850/900/1800/1900mhz (quad band) but only crippled to tri-band by the radio firmware. Am I all wet here?
edit- my model numbe is PM10A which is supposedly the 900/1800/1900 version.
What a great news!!! I am updating my only my radio image to 1.10 (w/ Chinese Dopod 818 1.06 for the OS) and see how it goes.

Apparently you could damage your GSM radio so that it might malfunction. However, I have seen a few people here who've used the 1.10 radio firmware without adverse results. Anyone have any more feedback?

If you're with AT&T (Cingular) and in the area where they use 850 MHz for coverage, that might be one of the reason. Universal (xda exec) doesn't cover that frequency. Universal is a tri band and not a quad band phone.
ya u may be right, cuz the mda, erickson and razr all work in the house
i mean when i leave the house it gets better, is there anyway i can improve the reception this phone is so much better than the mda dangit
Hey Guys,
Ive upgraded to the latest Vodafone WM6 ROM and was expecting to be able to get HSDPA connections, I live in Basingstoke and should (according to Vodas coverage map) be able to get HSDPA. I have also tried in Reading Newbury and Central London.
The max speed I can actually get is around 200kbits (average is about 140kbits) and I never get an "H" symbol just the usual "3g" one. Speeds were tested on the dsl reports mobile speed test with 100k download. http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
Can anyone on the Vodafone UK network get an HSDPA connection? I have complained to Vodafone but they are useless.
I also found out that Vodafones network is currently being upgraded to support HSDPA data and Voice simultaneously.
I have a feeling HSDPA is currently still off on the UK Vodafone flavor of the ROM but it would be nice to have this clarified.
All opinions welcome......... Thanks in Advance.
Hi.. Can't help you with Vodafone but I'm on Orange with a wm6 750v and only get the 3g icon but it does use the orange HSDPA network when i connect to the internet. Much quicker than when I was on wm5 and could only get UTMS, think you get the 3g icon with wm6 whatever network it uses but I could be wrong. There was talk that Orange and Voda were going to mix their 3g networks for better coverage, maybe it has something to do with that?
Hi, I'm on Vodafone UK (contract). I was hoping for WM6 to have HSDPA natively on this ROM, but I too only ever saw the 3G symbol. Out of frustration I re applied the HSDPA hack for WM5.
Sure enough - HSDPA is present. It shows 3G, then when data is actively moving - it changes to a H.
I've done speed tests and can get over 700k download speeds.
I live in the Durham area with 100% HSDPA coverage.
After applying the hack, or after a reset - reset it again - for some reason it takes 2 soft resets for it to "take".
But you need to apply the old hack.
Hope that helps you!
Ive upgraded to wm6 on 750v but still needed to apply this to get 700+kbit/sec
http://www.gadgetech.info/treo/hacks/hsdpa/
'H' all the way now
Be warned - rumour has it that using HSPDA on 750v causes voicecalls issues (ie you wont get any if push email occurs) in certain parts of UK on voda network.
Cheers for the input guys,
Im a little bit upset that HSDPA has not been included in the UK 750V ROM-- I know why because Vodafones network isnt upgraded yet--- but palm could of at least told us this was the case!!
Sooo are we expecting another ROM update when Vodafones network is ready?
Would be nice to get some clarification!.
HSDPA is there. I installed the Vodafone ROM (though I did remove the extended ROM) on my generic 750. Not to rub salt in the wound, but I am on 3 and dslreports is showing me connected at 900-1015kb/s.
I haven't experienced the issue of having a HSDPA push connection and have voice quality issues. I am on the phone most of the day with email constantly coming through.
Works for me
Ok so I have the Vodafone WM6 legit Rom and the HSDPA patch/hack installed and it works fine. When I make or recieve a call on the phone whilst browsing it drops the connection down to 3G as shown by the symbol (changes from H to 3G) then when the call is ended it changes back! Battery drain is exactly the same as using 3G but I am getting speeds on Vodafone in Sheffield of up to 1mbs
If I find I have any problems I will let you all know!
My 750v is unlocked and I'm using it on 3 in the UK with the WM6 upgrade. Get great HSDPA speeds now. No need to get the hack (which never worked for me on WM5 anyway).
I thought it worked!
Ok so I was sending a large email the other day (3mbs attachment) and I tried to make a call while it was sending the mail over the HSDPA. The phone tried to dial and then hung up. I tried to call the number again and got the same thing! I stopped the email sending and even though it was not transmitting any data I still could not make a call! I disconnected the data connection and making a call was fine, it worked 1st time!
I have since uninstalled the hack at it works fine now over 3G speeds!
What a shame, I want HSDPA back
I'm in central London (W10 and SW1) in areas listed on Vodafone's site as being in HSDPA coverage. Although I have WM6 installed I have never seen 'H'. I'm wary of the hack after comments above describing problems.
Vodafone have no answer for my issue.
Has anyone on a WM6 hack-less 750v picked up HSDPA in London/UK yet?

I have just bought a new TMobile Vario 4 from the UK (HTC TOUCH PRO T7272) I am working and currenlty live in Canada - I have returned and have noticed that I no longer get 3g or HSDPA as a data connection - I am using NRG v2 ROM and have flashed 2 radios however have no luck cathcing a 3g data connection! I have been searching online and here and seem to get some stories that it maybe hardware - can anyone confirm if there is anything i can do?
Cheers - hope I havent bought a ferrari only to have a mini engine in it!
Mods can you move this to the ROM forum as i think it maybe a more techincal focussed question than general
Cheers

I'm fairly certain the Vario is Europe/Asia 3G meaning 900/2100Mhz 3G. In Canada on Rogers/Fido (and AT&T in the US) we use 1800Mhz 3G.
The best you will get is an edge connection. If you need a 3G phone that works in north America too go across the border (hopefully you work/live near one) and pickup an AT&T Fuze.

This is the one I have http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=1320&c=t-mobile_mda_vario_iv_htc_raphael - it says that it supports GSM 1800! I took out the battery and it says RAPH 300 - If i select GSM UTMS Band of 900+1800 and UMTS 2100(Worl) in the phone settings i get no network connection? Im confused now - I could get HSDPA and 3G with my T Mobile Vario 3 - trying to do some digging on what specifically RAPH 300 refers too as information and actual phone activity seems to be contradictory! Any ideas of the meaning of RAPH 300?
Hi I've had a vodafone branded Palm Treo 750v (specs below) running OK on Telecom XT in New Zealand since May '09. On Friday the 13th Of November, the carrier line on today screen showed "53005" instead of "Telecom NZ" and may have even said "o2" in the spot for a bit...but still worked. Then, from mid-day on the 13th through now (17 Nov) it's said "No service"...and meant it.
There were 3 times where I briefly (minutes) got service...twice in central Hamilton and one in Papakura (near Aucklaland). A sim card from 2degrees works in the phone when I get no service from the Telecom sim. Got a v2 simcard from Telecom today...same problem in store, but when I walked out it started working outside building in central Hamilton! When I drove out of central Hamilton today it stopped working. Despite hours on phone/email with Telecom, no solution. So, I'm thinking it might have something to do with the bands...maybe they changed something on Friday? Some clues:
The band selection is set to auto and auto. I understand Telecom runs WCDMA 850...and in some city centres it runs 2100...but my phone has only:
GSM(900+1800)+UMTS 2100
GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850)
The places where I briefly got reception match up with where there is likely 2100.
Tried re-flashing ROM, removing sim, re-flashing radio, changing band settings to manual...no effect.
Any help appreciated.
I'd swap to a different ROM - preferably a generic one.
Those Vodafone ROMs are locked down for some frequencies.
Your best bet is to follow some of the guides which let you install a different ROM on your phone - a good one give you more control of the frequencies you can choose. The MiniSD card bootloader method is what you're after.
I can't speak for NZ, as I've not been over there yet to play with the XT network, but in Australia on Telstra's NextG network, I set the network to:
UMTS ONLY
and UMTS(850)
I've found the coverage of the 850 umts network to be better than any of the others, and stopping the phone jumping between frequencies also helps things considerably.
But if Telecom haven't rolled out 850 in the urban centers yet, I'd set it to UMTS ONLY/ UMTS (2100+850).
Hi there. I should've made it clearer...phone was Vodafone branded and I upgraded to a cooked ROM that was working fine. When problem happend, I then tried a couple radios and non-cooked ROMs...same issue.
Well...since my post Telecom replaced my sim card to a V2 card. But the new sim wasn't working at telecom store...went home not hopeful but then it just started working...problem seems to have gone. Still don't know what exact issue was...but it works.
Take home point: If you have issue, try new sim card and maybe give it a few hors to work.
Hi there,
I am having the same problem on HTC Touch Pro. It is Vodafone branded. I am using NATF latest standard rom.
Does anyone have any advice? I would love a fix as I do not want to have to change networks.
From Liam
Not sure but might want to look here:
http://pdabreak.com/2008/htc-touch-pro-review/
"And here is the bad news now: It has been officially confirmed by HTC that the devices would be available as quadband, with separate versions available for North American and rest of the world markets. That means if you own the European version of the HTC Pro and afterwards fly to the US, your $1000 piece of hi-tech gadget simply won’t work on their 850mhz band or even if it does with the custom Rom pack, but in that case won’t be able to use 3G frequencies there. A disappointing fact indeed as most phones these days offer seamless connectivity to all 3G and HSPA bands throughout world. Further to agonize, the North American version won’t be available anytime sooner than December this year."
Hello,
Using my UK/EU Version of the Touch Pro branded as HTC (RAPH100 on the back) I get Edge everywhere and 3G someplaces. However, I gifted a friend an AT&T branded "Fuze" (not sure of the exact model) and when the phones are side by side most of the time, the Fuze gets 3G everywhere and I am stuck on Edge.
They are both on AT&T, and as far as I know have the same data plans. I thought they were both quad frequency chips, and I didnt think there were any GSM differences in the hardware between the versions.
What gives? Can I take a broken Fuze, desolder the GSM chip, and resolder it into my T7272? Is there a way to check for 3G reception vs. 3G connection allowance? Meaning is my phone getting the 3G signal, but AT&T refusing my phone's ID?
you may have posted this in the wrong place.
Did you look at the radio versions? Sounds like each device had a different radio flashed on it. Check out the raphael radio thread here
Moved to Touch Pro, Fuze General for better exposure.
