I have done various searches but I cant find quite the answer I am looking for. What I want is a GPS sleve that will allow me to use the XDA I while I am biking. It must be able to run of the XDA power and it should use the normal GPS software/maps/talking stuff...
I have seen some CF stuff, but the CF slot is at the bottom of the XDA so that probably makes it no good.. Or am I looking at this wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Edy
Aside from the CF Jacket there's no other portable option for the XDA. You could use a CF GPS with an external antenna though, quite a few CF GPS have this option, the Globalsat BC-307 does and is frequently listed on eBAy at very reasonable prices.
There is no cf slot on the xda neither is there an option to add one, there is no gps sleeve that I know of either. The xda 2 has the option for a backpack which has a cf slot but i hear there are numerous incompatability issues with cf cards announced as "unrecognized device" or simply not seen at all.
The xda has a secure digital slot without IO capability so you cannot use sd card gps either. The xda 2 has SDIO slot.
Thanks guys and sorry for the typo... I of course ment to say SD card.
So no IO on the SD card... So for the XDA I it must be a car system or nothing? Is there anyway of running the XDA I as a portable GPS?
Ah sorry, with you mentioning CF I wrongly assumed there was a similar CF Backpack available for the original XDA.
As there isn't then your only other option is a handheld GPS connected to the XDA via a serial - null model - serial cable, maps on SD card. This isn't exactly a compact solution though.
Is there a solution you would recommend for this?
I want one system for the car and one for out and about on bike and hikeing. Sounds like I am gonna need to buy two systems - not a problem, but obviously I would like to save some money if I need to double my gadgets - only so much I can slip past the wife...
So, what would be your recomended XDA gps setup for car?
And what would be your recomebded xda gps setup for hiking/biking?
BTW - Thanks for all the help so far.
Why wouldn't a Bluetooth GPS be an answer?
this is sd and gps
http://www.semsons.com/itsdgpsrecxt.html
Thanks for the link, but it wont work for me because (as stated above) the XDA I does not support SDIO :-(
Also no bluetooth on the XDA I...
Any other suggestions... Keep em rolling, even if I am not getting an answer I am learning a lot about the XDA and GPS.
Edy
You only have one connection option for your XDA; serial. So you have to deal with a GPS that does serial, and power it.
If you're willing to upgrade to an XDA II, then you have a lot of choices; SD, serial, BT.
The price difference at the moment doesnt make the XDA II a good deal for me.... 49? for xda I... 399 for xda II... I know the II is a better phone, but the deal for I is too good to ignore.
So, say we stick with I, what are my serial GPS options outside of a car system ... which I intend to buy anyway. - In fact this looks like the car solution I need...
http://shop.wangtao.co.uk/info.aspx?ads=gps
Now all I need is a bike/hiking solution running on serial.
As I posted earlier, with serial being your only option and as you require a solution that does not require external power then you are limited to using a handheld GPS receiver that has NMEA out.
You can then connect this to your XDA and use it to drive an app such as Memory-Map. You coudl also use this set-up in car and power the GPS via 12v to save on batteries.
Thanks for the extra info Darren. So whats your recomendation for a good but cheap handheld GPS receiver that has NMEA out?
The eTrex range from Garmin are good value and even the base model has NMEA Out, see http://www.garmin.com/products/etrex/ .
Thanks for that, I'll check it out.
sorry if this has been posted before but is it possible in anyway to connect a usb flash drive to my desire using an adaptor or something :? saying that is there an app available to browse and external USB
No. It is impossible.
possible, yes...worth the hassle, nope.

my frined has a galaxy 2 and he has a cable for it, we tired a lot of things, but nothing works.
its a shame really
xoom usb host works pretty well - keyboards, mice, ps3 controller - out the box too
but for the desire - everything was picked up as an in-car device (without flashing new kernels)
I saw somebody last week connecting a usb flash drive to on his mobile but I didn´t had the time to see and ask which phone it was.
Have been thinking about it ever since. Would be so handy to push your date to a flash drive on the go.
I been to the same bar in the hope I would see that person again but I haven´t saw him again. I´m afraid it was a tourist.

It looks a big hassle indeed if you have to switch kernels to get to slave mode again.

My son is stationed in Afghanistan. He has (pays for) an internet connection. He is not allowed to install a wifi access point. He must connect via Cat5 cable.
He had a laptop which just had the power adapter connection break off inside the laptop. (Thanks for that great engineering, ASUS!) While he sends that back stateside for us to get fixed, he wants to get a tablet so he can still get on the internet, message friends and family back home, etc.
Originally, he was thinking iPad, but that seems to only allow connectivity via wifi. So do most tablets I've seen. I've seen a thread on here where someone is working on a USB driver which would allow the USB2Internet devices to work, but that requires rooting a device and installing custom drivers, and I'm not sure he is savvy enough to do that.
Are there any tablets that you would recommend that could connect to the internet via an internet cable instead of Wifi? (The only one I have found is the Gigabyte Win7 tablet.)
What does everyone recommend? (Ideally, something I can find on amazon, because I can dropship straight to him that way...)
Thanks!
This might help

Thanks Hooride707. I searched for similar threads but somehow didn't see that one...
I did find that the Toshiba Thrive can do it via a USB 2 Ethernet adapter:

So far that seems like a pretty good choice...

Hello everyone just bought a cable from Amazon and it got stuck in my USB port and broke my new Phone and the online merchant said that he would send me a new cable but that wont fix my phone now I'm heart broken it took me two years to save so I can get a android phone and be part of the android community now I feel so lost please help by the way my new phone is that. HTC Sensation .. thanks for all your wonderful help and advice ..
So how has it broke ? Has it snapped off inside the phone ? Have you damage the pins ?
Show us some pics
if it is in warranty , you could try sending it in for repair under warranty by saying USB port came out when you unplugged it from charger .....

Dude just call HTC and don't say anything about buying it used, just act as if you are the original owner. You should be able to get free repair or replacement phone.

call htc and LIE say that it happened with original usb cable.
hopefully they will fix it
Yeah if the device is still under warranty the warranty is totally transferable if the device is sold. Just contact HTC and they will probably ask you for the IMEI number and that will tell them if the device is still under warranty or not.
First off the phone is a month old and the USB port came out with the cable so I bought a battery charger but I wanted to modd my phone. It came from the united kingdom and I'm having a hard time getting through but I wont give up.. Thanks everyone for your input your all so awesome ...
Wow that suck how hard you pull that cord ???

I agree with everyone else above! Call them and lie, they wouldn't know if your the original owner. If they ask for your receipt, just tell them you misplaced it cuz it was such a long time ago...

Whatever cable it is, it shouldn't be getting stuck in your htc sensation. Just call HTC and make a complaint and hope for the best.. If not visit the nearest HTC service center, or maybe the place where you bought the phone from?
I'm curious...could you tell us what cable you bought...and also...if possible the link to said cable...just so no one else would make the same mistake.
Bought the cable from Amazon it also came with a windshield phone holder the cable was the cigarette style USB charger
Is it micro USB or just regular USB?

wierd
That's quite weird .. u can try to remove the broken charger pin with a forceps if its stuck in the charging port ..
But if u damaged the charging port then u can call for a replacement
HTC will (NOT) fix or replace your phone. That type of fault is not covered under the warrenty it will be seen as it was fine when they sold it and the damage happened when you plugged in and unplugged the cable.
I work in a phone shop and get this problem in all the time , they used to replace the ports on Sonys but not any more.
The phone would be classified as B.E.R (beyond economical repair )
SORRY TO CARRY THE BAD NEWS.
you need a new phone as the charge port is attached to the motherboard. (Or someone who will replace it, most engineers won't, too costly)

Has anyone been able to hook up a flash drive yet with USB OTG? Been waiting for my cable to arrive to test out. Just wondering since I didn't order a powered hub with it, since half the forums I have searched require it to work. If anyone has had any luck please let me know.

Nevermind figured it out myself. Need the powered hub.
On another note I am starting to really hate Samsung after seeing this. SamSung
Yep, we have a guide posted in the General section. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629134
official RUU is neccessary?
Will there ever be a chance that REAL usb otg is enabled? Which means without connecting external power? (I dont consider using an y cable and then externally powering usb to be "on the go")
While most modern phones made by samsung and some other manufacturers enable it by default but htc doesn't is beyond me.

I really want this too... i could control my dslr. and with power connection needed, it gets so worthless, because there isnt always a socket around...
Apparently Qualcomm does but HTC removes that feature.
in the leaked one x jb update you can use usb otg without external power, hopefully they will do the same for our phone.
