I have done various searches but I cant find quite the answer I am looking for. What I want is a GPS sleve that will allow me to use the XDA I while I am biking. It must be able to run of the XDA power and it should use the normal GPS software/maps/talking stuff...
I have seen some CF stuff, but the CF slot is at the bottom of the XDA so that probably makes it no good.. Or am I looking at this wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Edy
Aside from the CF Jacket there's no other portable option for the XDA. You could use a CF GPS with an external antenna though, quite a few CF GPS have this option, the Globalsat BC-307 does and is frequently listed on eBAy at very reasonable prices.
There is no cf slot on the xda neither is there an option to add one, there is no gps sleeve that I know of either. The xda 2 has the option for a backpack which has a cf slot but i hear there are numerous incompatability issues with cf cards announced as "unrecognized device" or simply not seen at all.
The xda has a secure digital slot without IO capability so you cannot use sd card gps either. The xda 2 has SDIO slot.
Thanks guys and sorry for the typo... I of course ment to say SD card.
So no IO on the SD card... So for the XDA I it must be a car system or nothing? Is there anyway of running the XDA I as a portable GPS?
Ah sorry, with you mentioning CF I wrongly assumed there was a similar CF Backpack available for the original XDA.
As there isn't then your only other option is a handheld GPS connected to the XDA via a serial - null model - serial cable, maps on SD card. This isn't exactly a compact solution though.
Is there a solution you would recommend for this?
I want one system for the car and one for out and about on bike and hikeing. Sounds like I am gonna need to buy two systems - not a problem, but obviously I would like to save some money if I need to double my gadgets - only so much I can slip past the wife...
So, what would be your recomended XDA gps setup for car?
And what would be your recomebded xda gps setup for hiking/biking?
BTW - Thanks for all the help so far.
Why wouldn't a Bluetooth GPS be an answer?
this is sd and gps
http://www.semsons.com/itsdgpsrecxt.html
Thanks for the link, but it wont work for me because (as stated above) the XDA I does not support SDIO :-(
Also no bluetooth on the XDA I...
Any other suggestions... Keep em rolling, even if I am not getting an answer I am learning a lot about the XDA and GPS.

You only have one connection option for your XDA; serial. So you have to deal with a GPS that does serial, and power it.
If you're willing to upgrade to an XDA II, then you have a lot of choices; SD, serial, BT.
The price difference at the moment doesnt make the XDA II a good deal for me.... 49? for xda I... 399 for xda II... I know the II is a better phone, but the deal for I is too good to ignore.
So, say we stick with I, what are my serial GPS options outside of a car system ... which I intend to buy anyway. - In fact this looks like the car solution I need...
http://shop.wangtao.co.uk/info.aspx?ads=gps
Now all I need is a bike/hiking solution running on serial.
As I posted earlier, with serial being your only option and as you require a solution that does not require external power then you are limited to using a handheld GPS receiver that has NMEA out.
You can then connect this to your XDA and use it to drive an app such as Memory-Map. You coudl also use this set-up in car and power the GPS via 12v to save on batteries.
Thanks for the extra info Darren. So whats your recomendation for a good but cheap handheld GPS receiver that has NMEA out?
The eTrex range from Garmin are good value and even the base model has NMEA Out, see http://www.garmin.com/products/etrex/ .
Thanks for that, I'll check it out.

hi all. been browsing here for a while. never really had anything to ask or anything i felt i could help with so have stayed on the side lines. all changed now
i bought myself an xda 1 about a month ago. i then decided that i would like to run gps from the unit. i have tom tom 5 discs coming soon on order. i had already bought a gps reciever a evermore gm-r500 model to go with the pda. it has the charger ect with it.being a complete newbie i didnt realise that it needed a driver to make it work i cant seem to find a driver to make it work either, does anyone know how i can get this to work. if you do and would be so very kind i would very much appretiate any advice. im lost in a world of gps at the moment., explanations as simple as possible as i am slowly trying to learn.......
cheers
dennis
I'm not a tech expert, but my understanding is that the TT software will see your gps receiver and so no seperate driver will be required (could be wrong though)
You could download this freeware programme to check and make sure your receiver is working (or just to play)

thanks mate....just tried it and i am only getting signal from one sat at the moment. that is one handy little programe. i will have a drive out later and see what happens
HI There
I have had two XDA's and loved them both, but found them impractacle when the battery ran out , I lost everything
Is the new Orbit any different or is there now a back up memory to allow it to save and not lose data?
Anyone know battery life on this device as well?
Many Thanks to you kind people for any help!
Hope i can be welcomed back into the Xda fold
(i am stuck between this and the sony 950i !)
Thanks
anyone know?
Hope someone can help thanks......
Presumably it will be a WM5 device and hence have persistent memory, like the Hermes etc.??
HI There
Thanks for the reply!
This is the deal breaker for me, If this thing loses all its settings etc like the previous two XDA / XDAIIi i had before then i will avoid it as its so annoying
all reads good though battery life, its just best knowing whether it retains everything if you can't get to a plug socket in time!
Anyone know yet? Many Thanks !!!
it's a windows 5 device so all settings and data are stored in the device and remain so even if all power runs out.
Hi you could have a look at this site.

After my current phones contract expires, end of Feb, I will get one. I can’t wait…
i have just got a t mobile MDA compact V aka a HTC touch diamond 2? anyway so far its useless.. bluethooth link to pc offers nothing but a serial conection, and from pc to phone i get the networking and file transfer. what the heck? my old artemis (xda orbit) had alot of things like the wireless stereo, HID options etc. and as for wifi, it seems to ignore the fact its connected to my home network (although it says connected) when using programs that need to go online, such as copilot amd the windows update. the phone has been fully reset back to factory settings. so whats going on here? is it because its a t mobile one that half of these things arnt on it? i would of thought the orbit would of been the same since its an 02 phone but nope it works better than this one!
um hello? lol you cant tell me not one of you know whats up here? how the hell can a phone from 2k6 out do, and have more features than a 2k9 one. WHATS WRONG WITH IT!!! also note, im using the same pc hardwere to talk to both phones and even a back up XDA mini, both xdas do everything well.
now, if i was to flash this thing, possably update tyo wm 6.5 (6.1 atm) would it, A. get rid of the t-mobile branding and B. work as you would expect it to!?
stress levels reising. please shed some light on this for me.
tia.
i forgot to follow this up for you all.. turns out there was indeed an issue with the softwere, somone may of tampered with it before and mesed things up. oh well i sold it to the local phone shop for almost what i paid for it so no loss
I would like to find a tablet that does not have wireless capabilities built in. This would include 3G (or any cell service), WIFI, Bluetooth, or even Infra-Red!
I work in an area where devices with ANY wireless capability built in are not allowed. It is not enough to simply turn them off.
So, I am looking for a tablet that does not have these wireless capabilities built in.
Any suggestions are appreciated!
I am also interested in the answer to this.
I don't think there is such a device. And if there is, it's probably a very old tablet that was made before any of these technologies were created for tablets.
The market for wireless-less tablets is so small that it's very unlikely that anyone will make them. Removing WiFi and bluetooth for a handful of people is just too expensive.
close it maybe the best way.
I'm think...
Out of interest, how would they know?
Most tablets have an Airplane Mode which will disable all wireless functionality.
Or you could root it and remove the drivers..
not worth losing the job on not being up front... it would lead to questions of a lack of integrity...
Have a dev build a ROM for you . Im sure someone would be happy to help if you were to donate for their help and time.

I think you'll be hard pressed to find anything main-stream that doesn't include all of those.
What if approached the power-that-be and present them with the idea of a disabled tablet where all of the drivers are removed? If they agree that is a solution you can then see about getting one of the Devs to build you the ROM as jtipton79 mentioned above.
Anyone find one can you PLEASE CONTACT ME ???
I have develop EMF and can't STAND WIFI, BLUETOOTH or ANYTHING WIRELESS ((((
YES, it SUCKS to me be (((, I know, but I just can't stand it.
So, if ANYONE on here READ this and find out, please please please let me know.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!!

Buy a 2nd generation nexus 7. Open it and remove the internal connectivity chip. Buy an external wifi adapter and use it at home.

First, I'm 30 and I've never even owned a cell phone. I'm very tech savvy with computer hardware/BIOS ROM flashes/linux etc. My most sincere apologies for any terminology mistakes and for not knowing enough on the subject. I've been researching this for the last week but I've hit a brick wall while trying to learn more.
I ordered a (working, stock) used Samsung Galaxy S 4G (NOT an S4). Should get it in a day or two.
I want to use it without any cell service what so ever; strictly over my home Wifi network and free hotspots. I'm planning to use Google voice or Oomas app for free/cheap voice service over wifi. The phone was cheap so I consider it a learner/throwaway phone to get my foot in the door with regards to phone rooting/flashing/modding. No worries about bricking the thing as I stumble around in a haze of noobish stupidity and ignorance.
Bleh.. I don't even know what terms to ask/search so I'll just spit it out as best I can.
The SGS4G uses a sim card or will ask me to activate a phone service before I can use it right? There are password/button combinations to manually bypass activation but that's a pain to do every boot. Is the activation built into the Kernal or the Firmware? Are there ROMs that ignore/disable cell activation nags to make this thing a strictly WiFi device? What search terms should I be using to find more info?
Apologies again for the noobish questions and much thanks for any tidbits of info you could toss my way!
I .. Think you'll have to unlock it.. U seem excited and nervous.. Don't stress yourself

You can use every android phone without sim card.
For exemple, I have one phone that is mount on my bike and I use it just for bicycle gps apps and everything is working well with out sim

Turns out its a Mesmerize. I also picked up a couple other android phones and was able to get them rooted and flashed; an LG-P505 flashed to Cyanogen 10 and a MyTouch 3G (HTC Magic 32b) rooted finally. T-mobile had a impassable "insert sim card" screen on the MyTouch 3G that took a GoldCard flash to even get into the phone.
Anyway, I'm totally stuck with this damned Mesmerize. I get nothing on the USB despite having the drivers installed and waiting. Nothing in device manager. The phone charges and brings up the connection mode announcement in the pull down. I've got USB debugging mode set. It will show a greyed out drive that i can't access when in mass storage mode and nothing at all when on KIES mode. The cable worked fine for the LG. Could the USB socket on the Mesmerize be screwed? Any way to force the phones adb client on?
Thanks again for any help you might have. Badass site here. Could read until my eyes bleed and still have more info to look through!
