Apologies for how relatively tech-illiterate this'll probably sound, I am not generally a tech person, I just have this very specific problem I've been trying to fix for years and this seems like a place that might be able to give me an answer if there is one
Backstory for where my troubles began: a long time ago, the standard music app on apple phones (aka what is used to play apple music) had albums, songs, artists, etc laid out in columns, with album art listed vertically on the left side of the screen and titles listed in the same row. This worked well for me. For visual reference:

Currently, songs, playlists, and artists are still arranged in this manner. However, at some point the album tab adopted a different layout entirely; rows and columns of album art, titles listed under the art, with no more than 6 albums onscreen at any given time, though with how big the albums are and how they get partially obscured while scrolling its often closer to 4. Again, for visual reference:
I really can't stand this. I have never been able to stand it and in all the years of using this stupid app I have never been able to get used to it. I like to browse my libraries; whether it's music, movies, books, whatever I like having collections that I can scan through, it's an integral part of how I consume media. The app being arranged this way makes this near impossible for me- there's so little onscreen at a time, it's like if any time I wanted to scan my bookshelf I had to put up an empty picture frame in front of my face and only look at the five books visible through that frame at a time. It makes finding music to listen to a big pain every time and I know it's not really THAT big a deal all things considered but I'm fed up with it at this point, it's like a splinter that won't go away. The rows system let me actually scan across titles effectively. I just want THAT back. That is the only thing I want back in regards to this app.
I might switch to another music streaming app, but there would be a lot of complications with that for various reasons; for the sake of this thread pretend that's not an option. Is there any way to jailbreak/hack into/use add ons for the music app on android in a way that could change the way the album tab layout looks on the app? Or, are there third party apple music apps on android that solve this issue? If this isn't the place to ask this or there's something more specific I ought to be asking let me know; I'm just looking for any fix anywhere I can find it at this point.

Thought I would post some progress on the collaborative project between my BF (Stev-o) and myself on our Android Music Program!!!!!
*Also can be found on my Blog at DoesItPew.blogspot.com*
This program need some more rework and a UI....however most of the functions are working decently well. You can use Voice to text for searching or type it in (personally I like using my Swype keyboard). This will generate the individual songs and playlists instantly playable by your media player of choice! Please comment on stuff that just does not work or any suggestions, only been working on this for like 2 months between about 5-6 different projects and working full time (BF is a grad student).
Search for a song on your phone by any information:
This program allows you to find any song on your phone by any metadata about the song. Want to find every song made in 1974? Type in "1974" and you will see a list of all the songs sang in 1974 from your library! Can you only remember pat of a song name or artist name? Type it in and see the results when you hit search! It really is that easy and you won't spend all that time scrolling through menus to find that perfect song for that perfect moment.
Search by Humming or Singing:
This feature is enabled through the use of the NSF funded TuneBot project by Bryan Pardo at Northwestern University. TuneBot is a crowdsourced Sound-Hound alternative that is Free, Open, and Ever-Ex panding. You can contribute to the Database by playing KaraokeCallout on your iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch and play a game too. It is free and highly reccomended. Plus the more you play, the better this program becomes and the bigger the database of songs is! You will see a VU meter pop-up when you try to hum, just make sure it does not go all red when singing as that means that you have had some clipping. This will show you the best matches from your phone music as well as best overall online results if you do not happen to have the song on your device (so that you can get it online - ie Youtube).
Search by Lyrics:
Can't remember the name of that song, but you can remember the refrain? Man, who knew that "Teenage Wasteland" was really "Baba O'Riley" ? The lyric search is provided by Leo's Lyrics and is Super Fast! Just like the searching for Metadata feature, you can type or speak your query. This will return the best matches from your Music on your device as well as the best matches online like the Humming feature.
Here is the Program: http://www.sendspace.com/file/yqg8n5
Sideload it
Background and Future Work:
Basically this project stemmed out of my boyfriend not having bluetooth in his car like I do in mine. He wanted to have voice control instead of fudging with buttons and scrolling through lists every time he wanted to listen to something. Plus, he is pretty mood-music kind of guy and never bothers to put together a playlist. In the future we hope to have voice commands added so that you can be in your car and say "Mix Country and Rap" and to will start playing all of your Country and Rap music for example. Eventally, would be very cool to have voice command dialing of phone numbers too.
Any suggestions, comments and such would be appreciated. I know it is rough and we are working on it y'all!
*EDIT NEW APK WITH ADDITIONAL FEATURES!!!!!!!*
Sounds great, but does Not install ob 2.3 on hd2 :/
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App
EDIT:could install but forces closes when trying Tor Start :/
Yeah, I have only tested on 2.1 and 2.2 since we have Evo's.
This is VERY good to know - wonder why it does not install on 2.3? I will work on the code more.
Really like the idea
I'll try to install it on my desire z in a bit (also with 2.3).
installed fine on cm7 nightly 23 but f/c's a lot
Updated code. you will find that now the single song selection feature in near instantanious and works great on gingerbread. No weird closing stuff!
Hi
been seatching for a good podcast app. currently using beyondpod because it supports paid subscriptions however the UI is dated and ugly. I tried pocket casts but it doesnt support paid podcasts.
anyone know of good podcast apps?
thanks
I've been using doggcatcher since forever. I'm pretty happy with it but 99% of the time I'm not in the UI, I'm just listening. Its locked into my BT toggle so when I'm on a headset (motorcycle helmet) I just toggle media and the next podcast kicks off).
I love Pocket Casts, it's worth the money!

I gotta say that I'm a big fan of DoggCatcher. It's super flexible, and has about every feature you could want. Having so many features and options makes it hard to produce an elegant UI, but once you've got it set to your liking (i.e. download and keep every episode of podcast A, only the most recent 2 of podcast B, only download when on wifi, etc) you won't have to worry about the UI clutter anymore.
The only feature missing from DoggCatcher is sending video to my Chromecast.
I own BeyondPod, DoggCatcher and Pocket Casts. I've settled on Pocket Casts.
DoggCatcher has a ton of features, but the UI is pretty mediocre. BeyondPod didn't really offer anything that DoggCatcher didn't.
PocketCasts has all the features I want, a great UI, and the best part - cloud syncing. Log in with your user account and you've got all of your podcasts, all of your playlists, and synchronization of your progress for any of the podcasts. So when I go home and drop my phone in my office, I can use my tablet right where I left off.

I was a BeyondPod user for years, but got tired of the aging interface. I've been on Pocket Casts since they had their big Holo update and haven't looked back.
Pocket Casts in my opinion is the best. Lots of features and a killer ui

Hi folks, I come today with a bug that has been plaguing me for the past few months. I've tried my hand at troubleshooting this myself, but it's just leaving me scratching my head.
Basically I'm experiencing a very strange issue with transferring mp3's to my Nexus 5. It's persistent, too. It happens to about maybe 7% of my library. I have everything tagged as I desire in iTunes (I know, I know... still a holdout from my iPhone days). All the file names correct, song orders good, album artwork displayed, all as I want them to be. I use doubleTwist's Windows app to help me sync my music to my phone - it's integration with iTunes has been very helpful in getting my music over.
The problem is that, while everything on my own computer looks good, when transferred, about 7% of my music ends up with strange, incorrect metadata. That means the artist is often ending up as ??????, songs with Japanese characters are losing their titles sometimes to ???'s and sometimes to random keyboard mashings. The error is not consistent. Sometimes the albums are transferred with everything but their album artwork. Sometimes they're missing their artwork and artist. Sometimes the songs lose their names.
Often (though not always), when the error occurs the songs end up on my Nexus with *old* metadata. In other words, it ends up being transferred with metadata it previously had (usually artist and album name) and sometimes it takes what I currently have it tagged as. Always the songs affected end up without album artwork.
It's happened on every ROM tested, and no matter how many times I try deleting and resyncing my library via different methods, it doesn't work. I won't list out every troubleshooting method I've tried (there have been a lot), but I've tried transferring my music manually to witness it in action. Here's an example of that:

This is the same mp3 transferred by a simple drag-and-drop operation. The transfer stripped it of its artist name, album title, song title, and album artwork.
I thought it might be a bug with unicode transferring, but even renaming the file, title, etc. to use exclusively ASCII did not work. I've tried retagging them in different programs and while it transferred with different information, it still failed to transfer these songs with the proper metadata.
TL;DR... Transferring mp3s onto my Nexus 5 leads to about a 7% chance of it being stripped of its correct metadata and replaced with either old or incorrect metadata. Have tried numerous tests to try to determine cause, but cannot find any consistencies. At my wits end for the problem.
EDIT: I also just tested it on the Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4 that I got yesterday and, to make matters more confusing, the problem does not exist there. So the problem is exclusive to the Nexus 5...
I know this will sound crazy but I want to make an app that is interactive and dedicated only to my girlfriend. My idea is that once you open that app,
** It will give you a title screen with background picture of both of you.
** That title screen has 3 options,
1.) Videos
2.) Pictures
3.) Exit
Once you open the "Videos", it will open all of your videos that involves both of you, and of course if an independent video player is very difficult to include, then after you select a video, the user will be prompted on what player to choose, for example a window will pop-up with a selection of "MX Player" and "Album/Gallery" app and there's two option below which is "ALWAYS" and "ONCE"
And on the other hand, same interaction in the "Pictures" department, wherein all of your pictures will show, and there's an option "SlideShow".
I know the question of "where would the videos and pictures come from??", I'm planning to make a folder which consists of all the videos and pictures (probably it's about 3Gb-4Gb) and just simple copy-paste it in the source folder of the app. For example, it should be place on the /android/obb
Do you think it is possible? If so, how should I begin then?
This is the title screen I'm thinking about, and of course we are those silhouettes.
That is 1080p x 1920p resolution (dedicated for her Samsung S4 GT-i9505)

Android App Dedicated for a Lover
On first start up of App, ask your lover to configure a dedicated folder to store personalized videos and Photos. Then implement Video Player and Image browser. This app is just a two in one type so not much hassle in implementation.
Up! I really want to pursue this app. Please help me guys
Sounds like a great idea, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread, to see how it goes, never made an app before but doesn't seem to terribly complicated to make something simple like this. Then again I could be wrong lol.
interesting idea... will keep myself posted to this thread.
Any xda masters here who can give me an idea or even a headstart?
Is it possible? I am annoyed that it only works with Samsung Music and all the rest have to rely on the typical ugly notification controls. I was hoping something like this would be possible: https:// www.xda-developers.com/how-to-add-third-party-music-apps-emui-lock-screen/

Musixmatch I believe has this feature and player pro does I'm not sure if any others do though but will keep an eye out

First we need to find if it's an API that allows for full screen widgets on the UI or is it's an app specific thing or both. If you replace S7's Samsung Music with S8's you get the updated look (that also is not matching the aspect ratio of S7 so it's a bad idea to do) which makes me think it might be a combination of things, like there is an API that allows such thing and the app is responsible what will be projected in the end.

Nice! My only issues with both of them is that their implementations is fiddly and they don't support gapless playback. Music Pro says it does but it fails to in a terrible way.

You can check out BlackPlayer Pro on PlayStore. I've been using it on every phone that I had, isntead of the stock music player. There is a free version and there is a pro version which costs about 2 dollars I think, totally worth it though. It also has built in tag editor, option to download album art etc. And you can edit the way it shows the notification on the lock screen (only you'll have to buy the pro version for that). Would not change it for a thing!
