New uses for an old device (Arnova 9 G2) - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys! I've been having an issue and IDK how to fix it after searching for days, and asking at the Noobs thread. My GF tasked me with making her old Arnova 9 G2 (quite the big device) usable again which... doesn't really seem possible, seems it's rooted (IDK why, it seems her dad rooted it somehow) but since it works with android 2.X nothing works, Chrome doesn't work, Firefox doesn't work, play store doesn't work, etc. etc. Is there a way of making it usable?
The only use I've thought about so far is downloading her books or College videos there for her to study, but i'd like for her to be capable of at least search something in google or watch a movie there without having to download it.
Do you guys know of ways in which I can breathe new life into this device?
And if not, do you know of any uses I could give it? It's only redeeming feature is it's big screen, so I thought about downloading some videos (it doesn't seem to have a big hard drive either)

The best thing to do is to scrap it. You would be wasting a lot of time to make it usable, and further waste exponentially longer time living with a laggy device that is pretty much useless today.
You are better off buying a new device, even if it is a couple of years old model.

Thanks for the reply! I think she'll get mad at me if I tell her that, but seems like the only solution so far. Such device doesn't even seem to have had anyone developing any kind of firmware for it.
PS: Sorry for my broken english, I speak spanish most of the time

Happy to help.
I have been through this at some time trying to put the 1st Generation iPad to some use (primarily media streaming). Most apps stopped working, so I tried bypassing this by jail-breaking it. It was of not much help either because the experience was just horrible. The hardware was just not cut for the demands of current generation apps. This is also due to planned obsolescence of the corporations.
At some point, we have to accept reality and move on. I'm sure your girlfriend would understand it.
Your English is very fine by the way. And language doesn't matter, communication does.

You can reuse it for something in spite of its limitations. A digital photo frame... cook, prayer, etc book. Gene Roddenberry would have killed for that limited (by today's standards) device.
I would keep it off the internet, no worries then.

I gotta say this...

I have been a loyal HTC owner since 07 and a member here since 08 (i believe, lol). As you all can see I rarely post anything. I do however have a good reason... Everybody says search before you ask. So i did and always find the answer, every time. Sometimes it takes a bit of work but I find the answer.
It is just now that I started posting because I believe I graduated from super Noob to quasi Noob. I have flashed, installed, bricked, recovered bricked, and tweeked all my phones and finely believe that I have something to contribute.
Anyways I started this thread to simply say Thank You...
Thank you to all the members, moderators, developers, cooks, and everybody else. It is because of everybody here that we are able to take cutting edge and bend it to out will. It is because of you all that we are able to reflect who we are though electronic style, much like a hot rod designer or fashion designer.
Again THANK YOU and keep it up!!!
x2 from another quasi-noob (Though I have not bricked a phone...)
You are right though. Just put a little effort into searching and you will find the answer.
Now on to the serious question... How do I install Android on my hd2?

Hay... it was my first flash ever and something went wrong, LOL. I recovered it. I guess that does not count at bricking does it???
The easy way? Drop t-mobile and get sprint with an EVO or Verizon with the incredible. Other then that... Or, gotta wait till some super phone Einstein dude\dudet takes the core of the android port for the TP2 and adapts its to the HD2. Least I think it can happen like that.
Huh? It just occurred to me we have the same... issue. I want the EVO but DO NOT like android. I use my phone for business. I own my own repo company and I'm always working with PDF's, word, excel, e-mail, ect. I know android does SOME of these but I need all of them no questions asked. It should be a choice. I think when you buy a smart phone (especially HTC) you should have the choice of android or WM. Don't cha think? However, I guess that's like asking for you cake and eating it too.
Yes thank you all here, i've spent hours reading through posts and helping myself to many great roms and addons.
I was just kidding about installing Android on my hd2. I actually like WinMo quite a bit. I guess sarcasm doesnt translate to text well.

As a new user we are not allowed to post links, please let us know your feedback on the application. You can also subscribe to our Beta Program. We are eager to hear your opinion.
PadKite is also an excellent app for tablets so we are also looking for people to test it on their tablets. Whether your multitouch device is a phone or tablet. Your feedback is very important to us. For any questions, please reply to this post or contact us at PadKite Contact us.
More about PadKite™: PadKite™ is the first multi-touch mobile mouse created to manage the tiny content on our cellphone screens. Never fumble or miss a target again. Wow! This looks like an awesome tool!
There's only Éclair and Froyo versions available though, I'm running custom Gingerbread on my N1.
I tried running the Froyo version on my N1 anyway, but it Force Closes as soon as trying to open the app.
Any ETA on a Gingerbread version? I'm quite eager to try your product!
They said a GB compatible copy will be along soon.
I really wanted to try it but it force closes on me.
Always wanted to tryout multi-touch...
nice stealth edit trololol...
Sounds interesting, I'll check it out.

They included the complete libwebcore.so in there effectively including a complete web browser in their so called mouse driver. What up with that?
Just sitting and clapping my hands :]
looks wonderfulll .. Did anyone try it already ? does it seem safe and real?
btw: So I've understood that it is a browser like dolphin and others. .. does it include Flash? (btw does it have hebrew as other browsers?)
Hi xda-developers,
Hope you are enjoying flying the web with PadKite, the first multitouch mobile mouse.
Yes, it is a web browser. It includes extended Webkit libraries that makes it heavier. Hopefully these will be able to be submitted into the WebKit build on the near future. The application does not include Flash for the moment and does not run on top of the OS or other applications. As a new concept we are starting small running as a stand alone browser aiming to grow bigger. We are braking the mold on multi-touch interaction and that has to be gradually. As you might have notized it has a lot of potential.
Currently we are making adjustments in order to run in all versions. This requires a lot of effort however it will allow PadKite to run in almost all devices. If you want to run on a Gingerbread version, let us know via our contact form and it will be delivered shortly.
Some users have experienced problems with Android versions of FRG83D and FRG83. We are currently looking into this and we will come up with a solution shortly. If you have problems, running PadKite on your Froyo, please contact us via our contact form too or join our beta program. We need as much information as possible from our users (especially your Logcat). Also, take part in our beta program and you will be the first to get updated on new versions.
Please follow PadKite on Twitter and get up-to-date info on new builds at padkite account.
Thanks for helping us make PadKite even better!
Cheers,
Jose Vigil
RoamTouch CEO
looks great, I'm looking forward to trying it when its available for Gingerbread.. also it would be great to get the adobe flash integration working.. But looks like a great concept, original and useful.
Bumping this, as it is a clear winner as a productivity tool, but so few people seem to have heard about it. I'm a huge fan, and that's based on only having seen the videos, as well as it partially working on a mate's Xperia X8 (the X8 lacks multi-touch, so is unable to take advantage of some of the more powerful features, such as text-selection via second finger-rotation, although as a pointer it works perfectly)!
Hoping they get back to me soon with an offer into the Beta program, as I'm dying to get this app! Also hoping they take it further, and fast, so that it becomes an integral Android feature, rather than just a browser tool.
This is a game-changer, people, so get on board and bring your family and friends!

Don't hold your breath on this one buddy. I gave up. I recieved 6 APK's from the dev...not one of the worked. FC every time. I was working on it with him for quite a time, and it never worked. Seems to only work on one or two phones.
Won't be holding my breath, but certainly won't be abandoning hope! If those who have been able to get it working could post details of which model phones they have, as well as the models that haven't worked, plus current Android version, the devs might be able to narrow the issue down. Not sure if I'm able to start a new thread, being a noob and all, so if people could list the following in this thread it would go a long way towards getting us what we want:
Phone model
Android version (stock or rooted)
Whether it worked or not, and if not, at what stage it crashed, plus any further comments.

Send the dev any info you like...it didn't help. I was in contact with him for a few weeks. I don't 'abandon hope' unless it's time to abandon it. After emailing back and forth for a few weeks, then not hearing back from the dev for the last 3 months, I would say it's abandonment time.

Well thank you SO much for your diplomacy. You must be new here. I was just sharing my findings. Did you even notice the last post before you necro'd this crappy app...was from Feb??? There is a reason for that.
Good luck with getting things figured out around here.
Crappy app, perhaps, but only in terms of its failing to work for most who've tried it thus far. The idea itself is a brilliant one, I believe!

95% of brilliance is implementation.
I can think of a bazillion good app ideas...but making them actually work is where the real skill is. I am upset with padkite because they seem to have spent all this time on making a website and sharing the idea...then they spent 2 minutes actually BUILDING the app...and it's garbage.
This looks fantastic. I downloaded and try to join beta program, to improve your software.
And 14mb is nothing, nowdays phones have 1gb or so of ROM space. Or move it to SD card.

Are you suggesting that they faked the videos of padKite working on the Motorola (Droid?) phone? Because unless they did indeed fake the videos, then they had the app working on at least one phone! Obviously more than 2 minutes were spent, and I'm guessing the problem to be overcome is actually a rather minor yet befuddling one.
As stated earlier, I've seen padKite partially working on a mate's Xperia X8, so we aren't talking vaporware, here. Please, Mean Mr Mustard, change your heart and let hope in, and encourage others to do the same, instead of working against what you've already acknowledged is something good enough to upset you by virtue of not working for you.
There must be some out there who've been able to get padKite at least partially working. Chime in, fellows, and let's make this fairy well again!

newbie about to buy viewsonic g tablet, questions, totall beginer here

so im about to do it. been wanting a tablet for some time and as nice as the xoom looks for 1/2 the price this make sense.
can a newbie root? i dont know the first thing about programming. ive searched the forums, and i see roms, and all these things i dont even know what they are. TNT programs, which sound not so newb friendly lol....and i want to know if there is a basic root that i may be able to follow. root for dummies is what im looking for.
and also, if i screw this up can i revert back to the original way this thing was?
sorta nervous to order and not use it to the fullest potential but seems like without rooting its not worth a crap.
i know probably asked 100 times, but ive searched and just cant find basic rooting 101 concepts. read the faqs - nothing so straight forward that i found.
thanks in advance. if i find the support i need here which seems likely im going to order the viewsonic shortly
First, welcome!
And then...
Start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
This was the post that helped me the most. Have you rooted and installed new ROMs on Android devices before? It's not difficult, but does require that every last instruction is read. Twice. And look at posts about people "bricking" their tablets to see what they might have done wrong, or what they had to do to fix their problems. Don't worry about rooting; I've rooted a MyTouch 3g, a TMobile Vibrant and this tablet and it was the easiest by far. I'd like to say that the stock software sucks, but I can't. I purchased this tablet because I knew I would be rooting and ROMing and only had about ten minutes in the store and ten minutes at home with the original software. It wasn't horrible, but I do know that Vegan 5.1 flies and is very stable.
READ READ READ and search your face off for your problems before posting. Many people frown on oft asked questions here. I see a lot of people writing about how easy it is to search to get your answer, but I'm not a fan of the XDA search function for many reasons. So, Google is your friend. When searching Google, be sure to state your issue clearly and concisely, and in as few words as possible. Oh, but do include "XDA" in your search, or "site:forum.xda-developers.com" if you want to only search the XDA Developers forum.
Happy modding!
(1) We don't mind newbies, although it's nice if they actually respect the hard work of the people here by pressing the shift button to capitalize where appropriate. It would also be appreciated if they don't use run-on sentences.
(2) We highly recommend against modding for people like you. Just turn it on, update what viewsonic has for you, and everything will run just fine. We recommend you play with the gtab for a while before taking the plunge.
(3) You don't need to know programming to root. This thread will give you step by step instructions on how to do the essential things of modding. These instructions are so easy even a cave man could do it.
(4) That said, again, their stock rom + update should be good enough for someone like you. I have 2 gtabs. I've modded one and kept the other one as is. Trust me, it's more than sufficient for your needs.
thank u!!! im going to review that. now thats a detailed step by step which couldnt be answered easily but somehow seems doable for a newbie thanks. brings me closer to ordering.
I somehow doubt you read everything I said.

Don't be condescending. Were you born knowing how to root and mod a G Tab? Let people ask questions, and if you don't want to answer then don't.

goodintentions - I was thanking adampdx but appreciate your input as well. I read his reply and his link provided and at first glance it seemed helpful. With that said, I also appreciate you letting me know the stock VS GT is pretty good and perhaps I will leave it as is when I get it. People make it out to be like this thing is so unsable out of the box, which apparently isnt the case. I just want to be able to get to the market and download a few apps I like using on my droid pro phone, thats all. Additionally I will use capitals and try watching the run on sentences. I was just excited to post and get involved.

I think your whole thing is condescending, including that rant you posted in the General section about the "wooters". If you wanted to be helpful you could do a write up and review about the stock ROM and make suggestions of what to do to make it better. This singling out of a group of people is rude and dangerous. You create an environment that is hostile and discourages fresh ideas. There are always kinder words to use and gentler ways to guide people.

Not to mention there be members who may not use English as a primary language and therefore may not be familiar with all of its intricacies. Respect begets respect. You get more when you offer more.
Well, here is my thought on why people are giving it such bad reviews.
(1) They compared it to the ipad right out of the box. Yes, the stock UI isn't the greatest thing, but it's usable. And after the update, it should work just fine.
(2) People were expecting an ipad when they bought this device. This is why I've been repeating over and over that this ain't no ipad.
(3) People have money coming out of their ears, so they want the bests and greatests. The slightest disadvantage and they will make it sound like the tablet exploded or something.
(4) Which brings me to my next point. People like to exaggerate.
I've always been a simple person. I like to work with what I have. I also hate Apple products with a passion. I only own one Apple product. I got my ipod (30 gig one) as a gift years ago. I've been thinking for a while to look for something that is light weight so I could drag it along for work and other activities. My laptop seems like it weighs a ton some time. That said, after I've done the appropriate moddings and installed the apps I wanted, the viewsonic gtab seems like a dream come true for me. It works incredibly fast. I didn't buy this thing to watch videos and listen to music. I have my tv and ipod for that. That said, I really think viewsonic is sitting on top of a goldmine with this device. I don't know why they haven't done more to publicize it.

Well, I apologize if what I said offended some people. But what I stated was a fact. Because of all the exaggerated reviews of how god-aweful the stock UI and screen are, average people get the wrong idea. They feel that they have to mod the device the moment they get their hands on it.
All I'm suggesting people do is give the updated stock rom a chance. Give it a few days before they decide to take the plunge. There's really no prettier way to say it.

[Q] Lollipop? Is anyone looking to develop a custom Rom for the Xoom?

I know our Xoom is getting a bit long in the tooth, but it still is one of the finest equipped pieces of hardware out there. I've been using the Omnirom 4.4.4 iteration for many months now, and love it.
How many tablets can you name that have external sdcard,HDMI, and USB capability besides the normative features most tablets have.
I think the Xoom might just might have a very good future with the next iteration of Android, Lollipop. I'd love to be able to
work on this, but if I did it, I'd have to find someone who would loan me a Xoom they have laying around unused for an extended period of time.
I don't know, but the more I think of it the more excited I become.
That's not how it works...... You are a user not a developer.... I will see what can be done when sources come out but no this is a scam! Why get a Xoom if you already have one? From a account with no rom threads started

Wasn't a scam Cameron. I have 1 Xoom that is my primary computing device with anything having to do with mobile devices. I will not have it's useability compromised.
By the way, long ago I wrote code for the Atari ST, STacy and Falcon. In the last few hours I have been able to get a second Xoom from a friend locally (he's not using it, and thought it was bricked-It wasn't, just needed help-I've got working) once I get my friend's Xoom up to speed and brush up on my coding skills I should be able to help.
Honestly, I'm 74 years old and just tired and busy enough that I'd rather not take away from my limited time to become a developer again. At this time I'd like to just be a user and return my friend's fully working Xoom to him
Cameron, It seemed like most of the developers had just gone into hiding and I was hoping to generate interest from the community..
You don't know me, or really know much about me. If you did, you'd know that I wasn't attempting to scam anyone. In fact, saying that my goal was to scam is almost criminal and libelous, but I'm not one to easily take take offense.
Just please don't do a rush to judgement again. Once you make such statements they aren't easily retracted.
I look forward to hearing from you soon. Your friend,
Rob

Thanks for the vote of confidence my friend. The Lollipop Software Development Kit (SDK) is out there. I think that I'm going to hide and watch(though I am available at any time) as far as development is concerned. There are many of us who need help, including me from time to time. I'll go back to helping when I can.
Blessings to all,
Rob

And add another vote from me - I have seen and read many a helpful Kingsman post in these forums - I wish I had some sort of useful skills other than flashing other peoples hard work or I would help - hope this generates the desired response from some other motivated developers - best of luck Sir Rob -

Since being on IOS since 2011 I haven't used this account ; I got on here to say thank you; you are an inspiration for the ages. As our knowledge and experience becomes "mature" it's good to see that young or wise by years; we can all work together.
By the way,
I do have a second Xoom of my own not, and am running Omnirom 5.1.1 Alpha on it. At the moment, I'm looking to see what it can, and can't do. I hope to be able to help Schischu develop this into a stable, and very complete Rom now. Even so, this alpha is very polished, fast, and smooth.
I think we're gonna love it.
Blessings,
Rob

Android 10 state on XDA

so I bought the 3a a few days ago, and I updated to Android 10. Wanting to install TWRP, I saw it wasn't available for the latest version yet. I know if I wanna root I can just flash the boot.img, but that's not why I'm here :
- are we gonna get TWRP anytime soon? I would prefer to wait for it
- haven't seen a custom ROM with Q/10 yet. Is it expected anytime soon too?
- Should we get multi rom support one day?
Given that there isn't any major feature in 10, I could just go back but I can wait a few weeks too.
Thanks in advance
PS: I'm not asking for ETAs, just a rough idea to help my decisionship

how fast does TeamWin respond to major android updates?
Given the current enthusiasm, or lack thereof with regard to Android 10 for this line of Pixels, I dont see much development happening soon if at all. I dont know why though its a great phone. I had the Pixel 3 when it came out and I do not miss that phone at all now that I have the 3a.

Every update is different. I assure you they are working on it as quickly as possible. I believe there are some major file and partition changes that are creating a pretty big hurdle they have to get over.

People don't decide to move faster based on these passive approaches of suggesting "they don't care." We both know this was a sneaky troll attempt. No one will bite, I assure you. They are just going to continue at the normal speed they can.
Nevermind,,,not worth my time,,, move on.

The 3a is the first phone I've gotten where I don't see any need for a custom rom. It's great just the way it is.

Exactly that. Only thing really missing is built in call recording and better sound quality through headphones.

Overall? yes you are right.
But i miss some feats like
Hide battery icon
Get rid of album art at lockscreen
Double tap lockscreen to sleep
...
Just small things that wont hurt that much ^^
@Unstroofy and @yabadabadooo.
Indeed. My needs are basic, bt for auto, maps for directions, and I add some of my own apps. I can definitely understand where those smarter and more adept than me like to test, tinker and experiment. I'm nearing 70 and I like this phone for dependability.
Oh yes and not a lot of bloatware.

I assume it was just an assessment and he wasn't trying to troll or anything, just saying the community around Android 10 isn't very enthousiast. No value judgment.

It is nice that you are extending a lot of latitude in lending the benefit of the doubt on this. The fact of the matter is that his claim was baseless. Android 10 has barely been out for a couple weeks. And to be honest, I have seen a lot of enthusiasm for it before and after. The truth is, that the whole "nobody cares" approach is used to cause a stir that the OP or replier is setting up as a challenge... as if the DEVs are failing and they need to get their sh*t together. It is a tired tactic that I am sick of seeing. It is subtle trolling. Even if he is the exception to the rule, I see this approach used too often and I think it does more harm than good to the userbase who counts on these DEVs (who by the way, don't get paid for their hard work).
Spot on brother, thank you. I have been around since the inception of Android and have been developing since day one. I have seen what great dev enthusiasm looks like and have seen devices get lost even though they are great devices. The Pixel 3a is a great device and everyone here is right it doesnt need that much in the way of custom roms. My hope is that it wont get lost esp when the Pixel 4 comes out. Not gonna take the bait on the haters who try to pick apart everything people say and turn it into something bad. This is a great community of Android enthusiasts helping other Android enthusiasts.

You sound like you want an argument to be honest. Maybe head over to reddit.
I can say that I'm not wild about Q, and was perfectly happy on P, but 99% of the reason I bought this phone was for the DSDS support which as far as I can tell, is completely dependent on Q at this point in time (and I'm assuming always will be). I've also been using CM/LineageOS for years now, and that's typically the 3rd thing I do to a new phone when I get it, behind unlock BL/root. I will say I'm a bit disappointed that LOS official isn't yet available for the 3a, but on the other hand, I totally get it with Q being so fresh.
I'd love to be one of the guys that is helping out with the dev side, but I've had so many irons in the fire with other projects for so many years that I just don't have time to do Android stuff as well. But I will say that I HUGELY appreciative of all the work that the devs have done for the community, and I will gladly wait for them to work their magic, especially considering we could all be playing the jailbreak cat and mouse game along with "damn it! the phone just updated, and I can't roll back to the version the JB supports now!".

Those are the best kind of arguments. Dishonest arguments suck.
Development will eventually happen for A10. After all, eventually all new phones will use it, or beyond. Anyone who complains about lack of development should learn how to do development and fix the issue themselves. Otherwise, you get what you pay for.
