Question Question regarding eSIM - Google Pixel 6a

Hello guys. I'm awaiting my eSIM code from my phone provider shortly and I'd like to ask a question (since I'm new to modding eSIM phones) if eSIM is saved in a designated read-only chip.
Example: I'm currently in an unsupported for Google country (where they neither sell Pixels nor support 5G, only VoLTE/WiFi) and would like to flash Calyx into the phone (and also patch ModemFix to unlock 5G capabilities in my country) at some point; Will I lose my eSIM profile? It will cost to retain my number back (10 euros for a new profile). Thank you for your answers!

What do you mean by that? Even if wiping your device removes the eSIM number (which it should), can't you just re-enter the number again? These aren't tied to devices, you should be able to use them in as many devices as you want (not simultaneously, of course).

Pretty sure that it's one time code; Once you download it, it's gone. That's what I know.
Another issue is that I can't physically use my sim because it doesn't work anymore, so my option is to go with an esim or a physical card. And I already have physical card in place...

Yup, you seem to be right. Not sure where I got this information from that an eSIM code can be used as many times as you want.
If you know you'll be tinkering with your device a fair bit, I'd recommend you try to use a physical SIM card. Even if there is a way to carry your once registered eSIM through ROMs, should you brick your device at some point or apply an upgrade that wipes your eSIM, you'll be SOL.
That being said, I've not carried an eSIM registration through multiple ROMs, so I'm none the wiser.
Thank you for correcting me on the reusability of eSIM codes though!

No problem. That being said, I can order a physical card so I can also manually enable 5G capabilities (because in order to get the 5G patch in place, I have to use a spare 5G certified device by my provider to be able to access 5G speeds, I happen to have spare phones).
And in the future, I'll be switching to eSIM because yeah; idk if it will even stay on the phone after completely wiping it. Initially I thought it's saved in some chip but whoever knows please let me know.

eSIM

I have done some reading on eSIM, mostly because I understood my Pixel 2 has one in it, and I hoped to be able to make use of it, since it doesn't have traditional dual-sim (ie with a dual card sim tray).
Is there a way I can make use of it, or is it really only for networks? Ideally, I'd like to be able to copy an existing SIM into the eSIM, and then pop out the SIM and replace it with my second one.
Is that possible?
Perhaps I've misunderstood this whole eSIM thing, but it doesn't seem anywhere near as revolutionary as I had hoped when I first heard about it...ie there is still hardware required, ie there is a fixed number of eSIMs any phone can have, and it seems unlikely to be anything larger than 1 or 2. Perhaps the next step will be fully programmable, where it is only limited by software. TBH, eSIM almost feels like a backward step since I'm sure networks will use it to lock the phones to their networks, and also make it more difficult for us to switch.
Does anyone have any good references to the technicalities of this eSIM thing?
I once asked someone who purported themselves to work for Google if I could make use of the eSIM to connect to Project Fi, while using a SIM card for Verizon at the same time. In his words, it can't be done; I would need to use one or the other. I know this may not be totally applicable for your situation, but, I think that answer to my question may be applicable to you.

Esim experience.

Hello,
I attempted to activate esim on t-mobile postpaid that did not go anywhere even though others have activated esim on pixel 3 before the t-mobile ban on postpaid accounts. T-mobile has stopped enabling esim on postpaid accounts for unknown reasons. It only enables esim on certain prepaid accounts and only on iphones.
Any other experiences with t-mobile or other carriers?
Confirmed working on Fi.

T-Mobile requires you use there app for esim. The iPhone is the only one that supports it at the Momment
I have T-Mobile and I was able to get the eSim activated on the 3a Xl . All I did was tell them I wanted to do a sim card swap and I provided the EID number. Took them a few minutes and they were done. BTW this was on a Postpaid account.

Phone call or chat? I had no luck with chat.
Did you use the full esim number - that is a very long number. Trying to duplicate your effort.
Thanks

called t-mobile and gave them the full esim number. Then uses this guide. Works great!
https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/a4507u/esim_works_heres_how_to_activate/
I got it activated on my Pixel 3a XL through chat. They asked me why I was changing sims, and I just told them I wanted to try out esim. They said ok and did the swap. I'm postpaid.
It's easier through chat because of the long EID number.

I guess I've had really bad luck because I have not been able to get esim activated with chat twice. That's the way it goes we'll try again. It is hit and miss.
Thanks guys for the information. Did another chat this morning asking for sim activation. Did not mention esim. Completed in about 2 minutes did not even have to reboot my phone. Nice. I can use the physical sim slot for something else now.

Generally curious as I am new to the Android side of things. What can you use the SIM slot for if you do esim? What is the benefit outside of saying you don't need a physical SIM?

I use an ATT MVNO Sim when I am not in a t-mobile area which is rare. I don't need two phones any more. One can do the same for the latest iPhone.
Actually there are other phones that have two sims like one plus, but two sim phones are rare in the USA but common in other countries. It has to do with the carriers. It would really nice if this feature discussed on the link below is included in android Q.
https://www.androidpolice.com/2019/...s-half-baked-dual-sim-support-to-the-pixel-3/
So two sims phones hopefully will become the norm in the USA since iPhone has this option and everyone copies Apple. Anyway I could be wrong but I think the Pixel had the esim before the iPhone.

I'm self employed and having dual sim is huge for me, no more having to carry two phone is big. This implementation sucks compared to real dual sim where you can have both active but it's still ahead of packing two phones around.

So at the moment, does your Pixel have DSDS capability? And if not (or before you enabled that functionality), are you at least able to take advantage of the physical sim slot by selecting it under network settings as the preferred option when you want to use the ATT network rather than the esim?
I had been using OnePlus phones with their dual SIM functionality for a long time by always keeping a T-Mobile SIM in one while using my China Mobile SIM in the other during my frequent trips into China. This enables me to keep a local number and avoid the internet censorship that is increasingly prevalent is most areas of the country.

Also. Currently using dual SIM in China. You will need to do the following to make network work reliable with all apps. This is a problem with pixel phones.

Thanks for replying. However, I didn't really get an answer to what I was looking for. I had also previously read the article in Android Police and I know what DSDS is. My previous OnePlus operated as such. The article suggests that DSDS is no longer an option unless you elected it in an earlier beta release. HOWEVER, I only want to know whether you are able to choose one or the other between your eSIM and your physical SIM slot? You will not get both signals at the same time. I understand that. But I'm just interested to see if I can elect via Settings to choose either the eSIM or a separate SIM card and use that one only.
With respect to the contents of the evil42.com article, I fortunately don't have those problems. Thanks for your help.

Question SIM Card Manager

I have a Canadian model Galaxy S22 Ultra (Snapdragon) and have an issue with how Samsung handles dual SIM set-up.
Here's my screen under Settings - SIM Card Manager.
https://imgur.com/a/1TjegB4
I want the Bell SIM (physical SIM) to handle most data-intensive tasks, but the Shaw one (eSIM) to handle SMS/MMS/RCS Messaging. It seems that if I set Bell as my Primary SIM, then the Shaw one won't allow MMS or RCS Messaging. It tells me to switch my primary SIM to Shaw if I want to do that.
It's been a while since I had a dual SIM Android phone but I don't recall having similar issues in the past. I don't think it's an APN thing either as these features work if only one SIM is available.
Any ideas? Apparently non-North American units have a more typical SIM Card Manager settings app that lets you specify which SIM is for data and which is for calls.
Maybe a regional Settings difference......?
My Note20 ultra (snapdragon) has more options in this regard:
Any idea if it's possible to get the SIM Card Manager APK from your phone? I doubt it would work but it's worth a try.
Someone in the Reddit thread I made about this mentioned it was indeed a North American thing.
Try either of these - see if it works......
(couldn't find a "SIM card manager".apk file)
Darn. The SIM Toolkit app won't install as it says the Package is invalid, and the SIMMobilityKit one just wouldn't install.
If someone with an S22 Ultra Snapdragon unit outside of North America could try, maybe that'll work
You could try flashing a non-North American stock Snapdragon ROM (e.g. China/ Thailand/ Korea)?
Anyone with a non-North American Snapdragon Galaxy S22 able to extract the SIM Manager app? Don't feel comfortable flashing a foreign ROM in case I brick ny phone or trip Knox
Looks like this is a more complex issue than what I thought. It's not a specific APK that's accessed when accessing the SIM Card Manager. Pulling a logcat reveals a process called "NU.SimCardManagerUtils"
Why Samsung cripples North American phones by limiting functionality of Dual SIM mode is beyond me (well OK, it's likely the carriers, but still.....)

FWIW there's pretty much no chance of tripping knox by flashing a signed fw and not unlocking the bootloader (not like you can anyways)
I am also curious at this and probably won't get to try flashing until my 2nd S22U arrives
I believe for some carriers Talk/Text/Data have to be on the same SIM card to make RCS work.

I would happily disable RCS to get better control over SIM card usage, but I don't think that's the case. RCS is supposed to be network agnostic, well except maybe AT&T where they just flat out hijack RCS.
I really truly wonder why anyone would still use that ****ty carrier tbh.
Yeah, this goes beyond RCS. Even downloading MMS messages from the non-Primary SIM won't work, and I've had no issues on iPhones or other Android devices. Even someone in my original Reddit post commented they can do it with an International phone (admittedly a Note 20, but it appears Samsung has been crippling the North American phones ever since they finally gave us eSIM.
Sadly I'm not a developer, so even if I flashed my phone with a ROM from a different region and compared logcat output from opening the same screen, I likely wouldn't understand what the differences are or what it's actually asking.
The s22 is different to my prior s21 in this way too. Before you could independently choose which sim did voice, data and SMS. Now it's one sim or the other for all three.
Wait, really? Were both from the same region?
If so, sounds like we'll have to try pressuring Samsung to put it back (however feeble that might be).

I actually think it's simpler the new way. Otherwise I had to toggle three items every time I switched sim.

Sadly no.
I am convinced Samsung is doing this in the Americas due to some backdoor deals with the carriers. The carriers do not want us to be able to use different sims for different things. They want you to have to purchase one expensive plan from them. This is the most compelling thing pushing me back towards the Pixel 6 Pro. Glad I still have it.
To overcome the MMS on the non-primary sim, I had to install a third-party messaging app. Pulsesms. I would rather use google messages.
For the phone calls, I just installed google dialer which lets you select the primary calling account (sim).
I have half a mind to file a complaint with my state's consumer protection board. It doesn't seem right that they can place these kinds of restrictions on US handsets, even if you buy it unlocked.

How do you mean "overcome mms in non primary via third party"? The problem is the non primary can't be used for data, and mms requires data.
The main problem here is use of data. Default sim for calling and texting can be set per contact thru the Samsung phone app. But data can't be switched to non primary. That's what there's no workaround for right now.

What I am saying is, that when I use pulsesms as my SMS app, it is able to send MMS using either number. I don't know how it does it, but it does.
With the google phone app, you can pick a sim card as the default for all contacts.

Unlocked or not?

I got a Metro by T-Mobile phone unlocked on eBay and while the phone no longer rejects MVNO sims, it won't connect to any network either. It still connects when I put the Metro sim back in but it won't connect with sims from Lyca, Tello or Hello Mobile, all T-Mobile MVNOs. The phone is a TCL 30 XE 5G (T767W) and I bought two of them new and they both have the same problem. I'm new to the T-Mobile network and I don't know if I'm missing something. I've never had this kind of trouble on Verizon or AT&T. Has anyone else run into a problem like this? I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Thanks!

Maybe you need to enter service menu and change your radio settings or maybe you need to flash a different modem for your specific model number.
I know you said you bought them new but can you confirm that their IMEI is intact?

Thank you for your reply! Both phones were shipped to me from Metro by T-Mobile. The phones were able to connect with an MVNO sim when I set the radio to 2G only mode but that option disappeared when the phones updated to Android 12 and now they can't connect at all. Even before the update, the phones would frequently disconnect and I had to set them back to 2G only mode to get service back so there was always something wrong. I'm pretty good with computers but I've never flashed a phone before and I've been suspecting that I would have to do that with these phones. I'll be happy to check their IMEI numbers if you could let me know what I'm looking for. I'd also like to learn more about flashing a new modem as you mentioned above that sounds like it might address the problem. And if you wouldn't mind letting me know where I could find the service menu?
Thanks in advance!!

After they updated, have you tried booting into recovery and wiping the cache partition(not factory reset)? Sometimes, after updates, wiping cache is necessary to remove conflicts between previously existing data and the new update.
If you are getting a connection of any kind then your IMEI is fine.
Flashing a modem is sometimes necessary but it can have risks if you flash the wrong thing.
I'm not familiar with TCL devices or how they are flashed. Typically, to flash a different modem requires downloading a firmware that has the modem that you want/need then extracting the modem from the firmware then flash the extracted modem onto the device.
Methods to access service/radio menu different from device to device, I don't know how it is done on TCL devices. Most of the time it is done by using your dialer and dialing a specific code, if there is a dialer code for your device, you should be able to find it with a Google search for:
"TCL 30 XE 5G dialer menu code"
Or
"TCL 30 XE 5G service menu"

Can you use the service menu to find out which bands/frequencies and network type the current modem/radio is using?
Can you find out which bands/frequencies and network type that your carrier network is using?
Compare them to see if they are compatible.
Or, try calling customer support for your carrier, there may be something they need to do in their system from their end to get your device to connect.

There are a lot of options to choose from, several of them list bands. Is there a specific menu I should look for?

But, are the bands that are presently available on the device within the range of bands that your carrier uses? Do the network and the device use the same bands? If so, you shouldn't need to flash a different modem, if not, you may need a different modem.
Did you boot into recovery and wipe the cache partition to remove any potential conflicts caused by updating to android 12?
Are you certain that the SIM(s) you are trying to use is/are valid and active? If they have been previously deactivated, they won't work

Sorry about the confusion. I did wipe the cache and in the past I've done a full factory reset from recovery mode it didn't help. And this problem already existed before the update to Android 12. It started the moment I changed sims. The phones only ever worked right with the original Metro sim and still do. That's why I wasn't sure if they were unlocked right but they don't reject other sims either.
The sims are active and have never been deactivated and now that I can force the phones back into 2G mode again, I can make and receive calls and use 2G data.
As for the bands I'm finding in the service menu, this is where it gets weird. They're all selected, there must be over a hundred bands turned on including bands I know this phone doesn't support.
I have confirmed the phone supports all the same bands that Tello uses. Tello uses the same bands as T-Mobile.

Ok, thanks for confirming.
It is weird, everything seems to be in place. Have you made sure your APNs(Access Point Names) are set correctly for the network?
I can't be certain that you have all of your network and radio settings set correctly because I have no idea what settings you have, what the options are or if there are any tucked away somewhere that isn't obvious.
If everything is right on your end, it may be something on their end that they need to get right.

Yeah, the APN was the first thing I checked and Tello confirmed it too.
I can send you screenshots of the service menus if that would help.
Tello is now saying the phone might not be "fully unlocked" I don't know what that means. Is there more than one way to lock a phone? Did T-Mobile come up with another way of locking their phones? A screen in the settings menu does warn the phone is still locked and it isn't yet eligible to be unlocked but it accepts the sim and connects to 2G at least. Could Tello be on to something here?

There are couple of different kinds of "unlocked"
There is SIM/carrier unlock and there is bootloader unlock. They two completely different things and have nothing to do with each other.
Have you tried going through the carrier unlock process yourself to confirm it has been done correctly?

Generally, there is a website that you go to to get an unlock code.
Google search:
"TCL 30 XE 5G (T767W) SIM unlock"

My understanding is that Metro phones can't be unlocked with a code. Instead, they're unlocked by a preinstalled carrier app when the phone becomes eligible for an unlock, which my phone isn't. In my case, I bought an unlocking service from eBay which had me hook up my phone to my PC via USB for the unlock. Is there another way to check?

You got scammed, whether they did it on purpose or not is another question. They probably didn't rob you on purpose, it is just a matter of there never being any kind of guarantee that a 3rd party unlocking service works on every device. You took that chance when you chose to go that route.
If there is an app that is supposed to be used, why is your device not eligible to unlock via the app? You will have to use the official unlock method if/when it is eligible, hopefully the 3rd party unlock service hasn't done anything that conflicts with the official method.
I suggest that, in the future, don't make gambles or look for shortcuts when buying devices without being 100% certain that you are buying from a reputable source that guarantees their products and services. It is best to buy directly from the carrier/manufacturer or from Swappa. I wouldn't buy from eBay unless I could confirm that there was a legitimately proven unlock method for the specific model number that I'm considering purchasing before I actually purchase the device.
If you can return the device and get your money back, I suggest you do it or report it to eBay to see if they will protect your purchase since what you got is not what you agreed to purchase.

I got the phones new from Metro not eBay. The only thing I got from eBay was the unlocking service which cost me $8. And I didn't pay anything for the phones either as they were free with the purchase of one month of Metro service. So there's really no point in returning the phones and I'm not gonna bother opening a case with eBay over $8.
Metro won't unlock the phones until I've paid for six months of their service.
A quick search on eBay comes up with multiple sellers offering unlocks for my specific phone model locked to Metro. I've been thinking about just trying to get the phones unlocked again by another seller but everything and everyone seems to be telling me the phones are already unlocked so I don't know what I should try next. Is there a way to check if the phones are really unlocked?

You've already used methods to check if it is unlocked. Obviously, the service you paid for didn't work, you can't get your money back for that, those services don't come with any guarantee. As I said, you can take another chance and try another 3rd party service that also is not guaranteed or you can wait and do it the official way. I'm betting the unlock service is a waste of time and money and you'll have to wait and do it the right way. That is the cost of blindly taking a shortcut.

One plus 8(IN2015)The operator name can be recognized now, but there is no signal。

I used to exchange mobile phones with others. When I took it, I said that it could work normally and there was a signal. It only took a few days

Negative. Supplier and network provider are two different things.
-- Your case could be a service glitch or distorted configurations.

The service fault does not exist. Because I replaced several SIM cards without signal, and I replaced these SIM cards with other mobile phones, all of them can use the network normally. As for the loss of configuration, I don't know how to operate it. I have been using it for several days. There is a signal. Suddenly, there is no signal one day. I have a signal from HO2, update to color13, and suddenly there is no signal at color13。I can't get the network when I change the system back and forth in Ho2.color13.oos.

Unless you and I referring to apples and oranges. Your issue has nothing to do with which operating system you are using or have updated to.
-- Reprovisioning resets your connection to the server and sets everything that reps can modify back to default settings.
-- Most carriers place the blame on user meddling on their device causing misprovisioning(s).
Reprovisioning refreshes the data on the UICC/SIM and APN settings.
It can also mean them changing the QCI settings on the UE and UPF at the core layer (meaning changing / presumably increasing the allowed speed of your service).
In simple terms, provisioning is the process of preparing and equipping a network to allow it to a provide service to its users. SIM Card provisioning is a process to activate said SIM and services before it is used by a customer.
Reprovisioning of a SIM is nothing but repeating the process from scratch.
In the event that you feel that it could be something else besides the SIM and/or IMEI, feel free to enlighten me.

I'm wondering if he's trade-in a stolen device or not. Since due to TMO's policies ( As mentioned in other topic, I have KebabTMO ) the device will be network locked permanent. And as I did lots of research on this matter with 8T, the only solution is to ditch the modem and replace with another one, then force EDL flash Global fw to convert it to global.
Using tools ( even Qualcomm Tools or other pro tool specific made for OP devices or to work with deivce's modem are both useless in this case, I even used QXDM, QCAT, along with QPST )

The general consensus it to perform a factory reset.
-- Take a deep breath, clear your mind and prepare to contact the network provider with explicit details.
-- You initially stated that you exchange phones with others.
-- You need to check to be certain that the ESN is cleared "for take-off".
A clear/clean ESN indicates that it is activated properly by the service provider. An unclear ESN refers to a phone that is either still activated, or lost/stolen.
ESNs might be “bad,” which means the carrier has blacklisted the phone at a moment's notice.

In this case you should have gotten a Chinese OnePlus 8. T - Mobile and other American carriers are picky with devices being used overseas, and there are often compatibility issues with doing so.
Often times your phone might not be able to connect to the cell towers in China because the cell bands may be different. This was the case for another Chinese user with the IN2019 (Verizon model) who couldn't connect at all. Your best bet would be to just get another phone or desperately try using the global or Chinese ROMs in the hopes of getting a connection.
