Hello everyone, I hope anyone can help me with and system update issue, I had sam issue in pixel 3XL, 4a, 6 and now in 6a. Phone get himself stuck on preparing system update and searching update screen in settings it alternates the two screens each second, no matter what you do, and the main problem is that phone heats and battery drains very very fast maybe last just 4 or 5 hours without using the phone, if I do factory reset all fine but is not a good solution. Also tried sideload update, it install and all is up to date but phone continue searching update. Sorry for my bad english.
Just turn off automatic updates and manually flash it.
If you're bootloader unlocked it's much faster to flash the factory image vs the OTA
Yes but it's a temporary solution, after some weeks problem comes again. And have no option to unlock bootloader, so just can use ota. But what is the reason for this issue?
If this has been doing this across multiple devices it's not a phone issue. It's either network or account related.
And you can turn off auto updates as a permanent solution and just manually flash the OTA every month.
Your English is fine if it is easier for you, you may use Google Translate

If it's still searching for updates after disabling that in developer settings and rebooting then something really weird is going on.
There is a way to look some system log or something like that to see what's a happening? In pixel community I see a thread where pixel's team help a guy with a weird issue reading some thing called logcat and found the problem.

Hi,
I have two Nexus 5 phones in my possession, both currently on 4.4.2 (Cataclysm and AOKP). I've recently noticed that the N5 running 4.4.2 Cataclysm has been using an immense amount of background data for 'Google Services' and did some digging to find out what it was. Turns out the phone is constantly re-downloading an OTA update, failing to flash it, then re-downloading it again, and so on.
There's a few attached images that are related - the file it's downloading, and the data used so far.
I found a couple of supposed solutions on various XDA threads and disabled the update service at startup, as well as installing FOTAKill.apk to system, but somehow it's still downloading and it's wearing me down as I can't figure out how to stop it. I understand an update to 4.4.4 would fix it, but i'd rather not as the person currently using the phone isn't all that keen on me taking time to flash & restore backups etc.
Are there any fixes for this that can be done by removing/disabling system services or the like? If it comes to it, I may just be able to block access to that particular ZIP in pfSense/SquidGuard.
Cheers.

Download this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice
Disable SystemUpdateService in Google Play Services + Google Services Framework.
The app itself doesn't store any data so you can uninstall it afterwards.
Or;
Open /system/build.prop, change
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/hammerhead/hammerhead:4.4.2/KOT49H/937116:user/release-keys
to
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/hammerhead/hammerhead:4.4.4/KTU84P/1227136:user/release-keys

Doesn't stop it from downloading the OTA again and again. That'll just hide all notifications from Android System, and you might miss something else.
If people don't want to be bothered by important security updates and other goodies, why should we care? I fully updated my manta last night (factory image, latest twrp, omni, restore stuff) in 30min. In my opinion, you're just being lazy with both devices.

The ROM used is an outdated rom, Cataclysm(4.4.2), which is based on stock.
It's their preference for what they want to use.
During the new phone setup in Lollipop, after flashed new rom, there is an option to restore old settings. Mine said that the last setting it back up is 27 days old. In the last few weeks i've flashed various roms and have setup my device as "new". For some reason it is not updating and backup my current settings and apps.
The 27 days backup settings have apps and settings that i no longer want to use. I like flashing new roms so it be nice to have settings and app back up current. I have tried various things to try to get my phone to update the settings with google but it is not working. Is there a way to force the phone to back up my current setting to google?
Thanks.
EDIT: If the back up is working for you, can you guy let us know so we have more info to troubleshoot the problem

I have this issue as well. The limit seems to be 10 devices. If anyone has any solution, it would be much appreciated.

I dont think this would be relate to the 10 devices limit. Wouldnt make sense if that is the case.

No, but a couple others have had the exact same problem.
I've been having the exact same issue.
I just went into the settings/backup option and clicked to turn off auto backups. It says it will also delete all backups on the servers. Hopefully next clean flash on set up it will show no backups and then I can turn it back on and thing will work from there.

Let us know how it goes.....
Did a clean flash this morning and my old backups were still there even though the pop up said they world be deleted. Instead of setting up as new I used the last backup from 28 days ago. Maybe the next clean flash it will update the data.
This is very frustrating.
Same here is there a way to Fix it
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium HD app
Yes, and this problem isn't Nexus 5 specific! What the hell is Google doing there? We need this feature. On my opinion, they can delete the old ones, so there is space for the latest. Oh well, Google....
Just did another clean flash after choosing an older backup to continue from. It did not work and did not backup any of my old settings.
I guess Google thinks we should only have 10 backups for infinity and after that we're screwed? Maybe they hope we will setup new accounts? I know this will only really affect tech enthusiasts but come on man.
I tested flashed as well. Turned off the back up option for a few days and flashed stocked 5.0 and setup new device., run for a few days, and flashed CM12, still no new back up choice.
When you guy select the backup to restore, how many choices do you have? I only have one and it is about 34 days old. I dont think google would limit it to 10, maybe they just turn off that feature for now???
Hopefully other people can chime in as well. Let us know if the back up is working for you.
I have only ten choices to choose from.
I've been searching for a fix for a week or two now and can't find anything that works. I can't even find good contact info to directly email Google and get the old backups erased.
I'm on an AOSP Lollipop rom on my Galaxy S5, and having same problem (still!)...
This really sux when doing a fresh install every couple of days...
Any news on this?
How can we fix this???
Weird. I just made a new install. And for the first time in a month I could choose a device from today! Yay!
Sendt fra min klte med Tapatalk
You could always chose to setup as a new device, just click on the drop down during install and select new device instead of an older back up.
I gave up on finding a fix. My theory is that this is new to lollipop and maybe Google turn off the feature or something. Probably due to bug. I just shelled out money for titanium back up.

Have you tried removing the phone from googles security page? That should reset everything. Disclaimer, I am not having this problem and have not tried tried my tip myself.
Firstly I want to apologize if there's a thread on this. I tried searching and didn't find anything. Google fails me as well.
For a few months now, Chrome has been driving me insane on my stock nordic Z3 (5.0.2 with the .690 firmware). I also have the most recent version of Chrome installed.
Every single time I open the app, it works for about 2 seconds, then completely freezes for around 15 seconds after which a message pops up stating "Chrome is not responding. Would you like to close it?" If I press "OK", it obviously closes the app and the problem appears again when I restart it. If I choose "wait", Chrome works just fine until the next time I open it. EDIT: The freezing problem started happening three times in a row a few days ago.
This happens every single time I open the app, whether launching it or opening it from the recent apps menu.
I'm pretty certain the problem has been around since the v39 build of Chrome, as 38 worked just fine. I have tried everything I can think of to fix it. Uninstalled updates and re-updated it, updating to lollipo didn't help, I also did a completely fresh install today (repairing via Sony Bridge for Mac) and it didn't help either. And apparently I can't go back to v38 anymore since lollipop doesn't seem to support it.
I would really want to use Chrome, as I've gotten used to it and enjoyed it quite a lot. I'd really appreciate the help.

Tried it, sad to say it didn't work either. Interestingly it now does the same 15 second freeze, but without the error message in the end. Curious indeed.
EDIT: Got the error message again.
Does this happen on Wifi or on data?

Are you rooted? Unlocked bootloader?
You say you are on the Nordic version of .690, is that the original region for the device you bought and the area you reside in?
Can you revert back to KK by flashing a FTF for your device and region and try V38 again to see if that works still.

I have a completely untouched device. So no root, locked bootloader and it's always been that way. Thus Nordic is the original region of my device.
I'd rather not flash back to kitkat, but I can tell you that I tried reverting back to v38 before updating to lollipop and it worked normally without the freezing issue.

Maybe try the beta version of chrome in case it's a bug which has been fixed but not yet rolled out to chrome. Perhaps try this first as it'll be quicker!
Perhaps it's some data associated with chrome that's getting pulled down after each restore. Perhaps you can try, on a desktop pc, backing up your bookmarks and then deleting them, and clearing chrome's data on your phone, then trying again? And if that doesn't work try getting rid of extensions (not that I think they should be pulling them down as chrome for android doesn't yet support them, although I'm sure I read years ago that one day they would). And anything else associated with your chrome account.
Another one, perhaps quicker (not sure) would be to see if you can associate your phone with a new google account with no previous chrome use and see if it goes wrong with that one. It would help to rule out account-related problems.
Another possibility is that it's not chrome causing the problem but something it relies on; google play services, for example. Perhaps clear data on any apps chrome could conceivably use.
I'm happy to report that my problem is now solved, though still a giant mystery.
My upper speaker broke and I had to get it replace under warranty. I got insanely lucky as they replaced both front and backside glass pieces, the frame, the screen module itself and of course the speakers. So I've now got a brand-new looking phone So happy.
Anyway, I complained about the software being a mess so they also did a complete reinstall and after that Chrome works absolutely perfectly. As magically does everything else too. Not yet a sign of lollipop's previous lagging and rebooting.
It still bugs me, however, that why would Chrome suddenly start having this unreasonable issue. I had tried everything suggested in this thread and nothing worked. My own clean install didn't work. I'm really quite bothered by this.
Has anyone with root had a problem with Android OS all of a sudden using 4GB+ of their data? Use to only use maybe 6MB. I haven't installed the newest update but I do have auto updates turned off. Google help was a no go. They told me Android OS doesn't use that much data. Anyone able to help me realize what's using it?
Noticed mine is doing the same but for the second time. First time i didn't knew what the problem was. But know i notice it used 1,53gb in one day of data, that is mobile data not even speaking about the wifi data. It started yesterday after a failed update of the OS through the UI. I think it's downloading the update over and over again every hour even when i did disable auto update in developer settings. The update is 100mb so it makes sense after a day.
The problem i dont know why the update fails. I do have a custom kernel installed. Don't know if this is causing the problem. Is it possible to have a custom kernel and OTA?
I had the same issue last month and had to call verizon to get a credit for their ota using up all of my data. You cannot take any ota's if you're rooted. The only way I could get it to stop was to sideload the update. The longer I put off updating, no matter which settings I turned off, the more data was used.
Okay, glad I'm not the only one. It even consumed data when I had the auto update turned off. Guess I'll try to side load when I get off of work today!
By months my 3a won't automatically update itself even with update/download "over any network", I have already tried to restore and wipe from recovery but still unresolved.
Does anyone noticed this issue?
I tried waiting almost one month without system (monthly patch) and apps (all pending) updates popup.
Google support after few attempts, just proposed me a warranty replacement but the phone otherwise is perfect.
Manual updates works.
Any tips?
TY
I had the same issue back in January and didn't get a system update well into April. So I had to manually update. Still haven't gotten the May update yet, but we'll see.
Also with the apps?
If you have an unlocked bootloader, I would not count on automatic monthly updates. They work sometimes, but not most of the time. My personal experience is that I have to sideload the monthly updates about 90% of the time.
As far as app updates, I generally manually check it every couple of days and find that there are pending updates. I will hit the "update" button and manually update them if I see pending updates. That being said, if I don't check it for a while (maybe a week), the phone will eventually update the apps, but it certainly doesn't happen on a daily basis, at least not in my experience. I just wanted to add my experiences as they seem to be very similar to yours.

Having an unlocked bootloader, too, but I never had issues with updates until now, they are coming directly at the first day Google is sending out the OTA.
I wonder if our phone service provider is also a factor? I have not been seeing the updates available within a day or two of when they are posted on the first Monday of the month. I get my phone service through a T-mobile MVNO. Maybe people on Google Fi are more likely to get it OTA quickly?
My phone is rooted with Magisk.
But I'm impatient so I have always just applied the update manually. It's a bit more of a pain because it means that I have to download not only the update but also the factory image to extract the boot image file and patch it with Magisk.
I have not had a problem installing updates for apps through play. I just have to remember to NOT update youtube so that I don't lose youtube vanced!
Hi all and thanks for your time!
I have a good news.
After avoid to do any manual update, right now I see that few apps have been updated themself from 11 hr and 2 days ago, but other 22 apps are still pending (when I wrote here the 6th May they were 40).
Around the 23th of Feb I had to do manual update search because it still was with Jan patch, even in March and April I did the manual search the week after the day 5th.
My phone is not rooted and during the day it uses both cellular and WiFi networks, mostly of the nights I put it in airplane mode and battery save (so it lasts easily for 2 days).
The cause was because I put all the nights the phone in airplane mode with battery saver, last night I leave it connected to WiFi and under charge, this morning I found the advice to reboot for install the system patch and after boot also the apps were updated.
The system patch has been found around 4 am.
I'm having a similar issue with my rooted 3a. I have stock rom, elemental kernel, and magisk. But apps that came installed as part of the ohone won't update in Google play. Stuff like phone, contacts, sim carrier, Gmail, camera, etc
There's literally about 20 updates right now that won't install. They download, and say installing, then they just skip to the next and still say there's an available update. After the final one is tried, I get a message saying that it was unable to update those apps.
Any app that I downloaded from play or as an apk, allows me to update without any issue at all.
I have googled it and followed the recommendations, but so far, nothing has helped. I cleaned the cache, hard reboots, switch update settings, turned off play protect, deleted cache and data of play store and play services. Removed my account and added it bad. And have some a few more things that I read about -- but yet nothing fixes it.
If I should start a new thread, that's no problem. I don't want to hijack this one. But saw that it dealt with update issues and thought maybe I would see if I could find help.
