Has anyone with root had a problem with Android OS all of a sudden using 4GB+ of their data? Use to only use maybe 6MB. I haven't installed the newest update but I do have auto updates turned off. Google help was a no go. They told me Android OS doesn't use that much data. Anyone able to help me realize what's using it?
Noticed mine is doing the same but for the second time. First time i didn't knew what the problem was. But know i notice it used 1,53gb in one day of data, that is mobile data not even speaking about the wifi data. It started yesterday after a failed update of the OS through the UI. I think it's downloading the update over and over again every hour even when i did disable auto update in developer settings. The update is 100mb so it makes sense after a day.
The problem i dont know why the update fails. I do have a custom kernel installed. Don't know if this is causing the problem. Is it possible to have a custom kernel and OTA?
I had the same issue last month and had to call verizon to get a credit for their ota using up all of my data. You cannot take any ota's if you're rooted. The only way I could get it to stop was to sideload the update. The longer I put off updating, no matter which settings I turned off, the more data was used.
Okay, glad I'm not the only one. It even consumed data when I had the auto update turned off. Guess I'll try to side load when I get off of work today!

Hi,
I have two Nexus 5 phones in my possession, both currently on 4.4.2 (Cataclysm and AOKP). I've recently noticed that the N5 running 4.4.2 Cataclysm has been using an immense amount of background data for 'Google Services' and did some digging to find out what it was. Turns out the phone is constantly re-downloading an OTA update, failing to flash it, then re-downloading it again, and so on.
There's a few attached images that are related - the file it's downloading, and the data used so far.
I found a couple of supposed solutions on various XDA threads and disabled the update service at startup, as well as installing FOTAKill.apk to system, but somehow it's still downloading and it's wearing me down as I can't figure out how to stop it. I understand an update to 4.4.4 would fix it, but i'd rather not as the person currently using the phone isn't all that keen on me taking time to flash & restore backups etc.
Are there any fixes for this that can be done by removing/disabling system services or the like? If it comes to it, I may just be able to block access to that particular ZIP in pfSense/SquidGuard.
Cheers.

Download this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice
Disable SystemUpdateService in Google Play Services + Google Services Framework.
The app itself doesn't store any data so you can uninstall it afterwards.
Or;
Open /system/build.prop, change
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/hammerhead/hammerhead:4.4.2/KOT49H/937116:user/release-keys
to

I believe you can long press on the notification and just untick show notification.

Doesn't stop it from downloading the OTA again and again. That'll just hide all notifications from Android System, and you might miss something else.
If people don't want to be bothered by important security updates and other goodies, why should we care? I fully updated my manta last night (factory image, latest twrp, omni, restore stuff) in 30min. In my opinion, you're just being lazy with both devices.

The ROM used is an outdated rom, Cataclysm(4.4.2), which is based on stock.
It's their preference for what they want to use.
I got the update the other day but my phone keeps giving me an error on install.
I don't see anything in Lolipop that interests me enough to bother messing with the phone to make the update happen so I turned off the update messages. My questions is, where does it store the update on the phone as I'd like to free up the .5 GB its taking.
Thanks
Anyone?
Pretty sure it's in /cache
And instead of just turning off the notification, you should disable the ota update receivers which will effectly prevent your phone from ever wanting/trying to update again. Check this thread for details- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2952845
Hello fellow pixel users.
my phone is costing me an exhaustively large amount of money for seemingly no reason.
as many of you are probably aware of this issue, "Android OS" or whatever is in this collection (see list below) is just continuously doing some background data bull**** and causing my mobile data to go through the roof.
I decided to set a restriction of 1gb of data usage of my phone in preparation for next month's billing and blew through 1gb in the day that my mobile data refreshed for the month.
I am rooted with stock OS from google, 7.1.1 and OTA updates is off in developer options.
what can I do, how can i stop this?
also, can i find out what its actually doing with the data? can I understand what is being requested somehow, is there a log somewhere?
until I can understand why this is happening and how to fix it permanently, mobile data is off.
all i wanna do is receive whatsapp messages and check the news at lunch.

is there a line for data usage?
if you click data usage, is the options
for background and unrestricted?
un check both for any apps you don't need using data
if you don't see those options
I'll try to find something else
Sent from my sailfish using XDA Labs
I'm using pure nexus rom, so you options maybe different

This has been answered a few times in different threads. If you are rooted and stock, your phone will attempt to download the OTA update over and over again, even if you have updates turned off. The only way I have found to stop it is to take the update (sideload is probably the easiest method) whenever a new update is released and re-root and reflash recovery after updating.
I called Verizon and complained that their update caused me a data overage without my authorization and got a 4 GB ($60) bill credit two months ago.

you can check the data usage detail here (the left side of the following pic).

The situation appears to be as noted by pimpinpanther96. My current plan is to try using FlashFire for keeping my phone up to date to avoid the usage. If that doesn't work, I may try out Pure Nexus, since their notes suggest OTA downloads have been disabled.

i have 7.1.1 on my phone and i am assuming there is no other OTA updates that it passes.
Is it possible to disable OTA update internally rather than the option to disable it in the dev options (which is already "OFF" by the way)

The only alternate option I've seen suggested is the following, which blanks the system updates in settings. I've tried it twice, and both times it kept my phone awake and wouldn't allow deep sleep, so I'm not going to use it. In one of the other threads a reply indicated their firewall was still rejecting traffic after changing the following, so it may not be any better than the development option.

By months my 3a won't automatically update itself even with update/download "over any network", I have already tried to restore and wipe from recovery but still unresolved.
Does anyone noticed this issue?
I tried waiting almost one month without system (monthly patch) and apps (all pending) updates popup.
Google support after few attempts, just proposed me a warranty replacement but the phone otherwise is perfect.
Manual updates works.
Any tips?
TY
I had the same issue back in January and didn't get a system update well into April. So I had to manually update. Still haven't gotten the May update yet, but we'll see.
Also with the apps?
If you have an unlocked bootloader, I would not count on automatic monthly updates. They work sometimes, but not most of the time. My personal experience is that I have to sideload the monthly updates about 90% of the time.
As far as app updates, I generally manually check it every couple of days and find that there are pending updates. I will hit the "update" button and manually update them if I see pending updates. That being said, if I don't check it for a while (maybe a week), the phone will eventually update the apps, but it certainly doesn't happen on a daily basis, at least not in my experience. I just wanted to add my experiences as they seem to be very similar to yours.

Having an unlocked bootloader, too, but I never had issues with updates until now, they are coming directly at the first day Google is sending out the OTA.
I wonder if our phone service provider is also a factor? I have not been seeing the updates available within a day or two of when they are posted on the first Monday of the month. I get my phone service through a T-mobile MVNO. Maybe people on Google Fi are more likely to get it OTA quickly?
My phone is rooted with Magisk.
But I'm impatient so I have always just applied the update manually. It's a bit more of a pain because it means that I have to download not only the update but also the factory image to extract the boot image file and patch it with Magisk.
I have not had a problem installing updates for apps through play. I just have to remember to NOT update youtube so that I don't lose youtube vanced!
Hi all and thanks for your time!
I have a good news.
After avoid to do any manual update, right now I see that few apps have been updated themself from 11 hr and 2 days ago, but other 22 apps are still pending (when I wrote here the 6th May they were 40).
Around the 23th of Feb I had to do manual update search because it still was with Jan patch, even in March and April I did the manual search the week after the day 5th.
My phone is not rooted and during the day it uses both cellular and WiFi networks, mostly of the nights I put it in airplane mode and battery save (so it lasts easily for 2 days).
The cause was because I put all the nights the phone in airplane mode with battery saver, last night I leave it connected to WiFi and under charge, this morning I found the advice to reboot for install the system patch and after boot also the apps were updated.
The system patch has been found around 4 am.
I'm having a similar issue with my rooted 3a. I have stock rom, elemental kernel, and magisk. But apps that came installed as part of the ohone won't update in Google play. Stuff like phone, contacts, sim carrier, Gmail, camera, etc
There's literally about 20 updates right now that won't install. They download, and say installing, then they just skip to the next and still say there's an available update. After the final one is tried, I get a message saying that it was unable to update those apps.
Any app that I downloaded from play or as an apk, allows me to update without any issue at all.
I have googled it and followed the recommendations, but so far, nothing has helped. I cleaned the cache, hard reboots, switch update settings, turned off play protect, deleted cache and data of play store and play services. Removed my account and added it bad. And have some a few more things that I read about -- but yet nothing fixes it.
If I should start a new thread, that's no problem. I don't want to hijack this one. But saw that it dealt with update issues and thought maybe I would see if I could find help.
Hi. Thought I could get a little help with something. I got my 1+8pro and I rooted it with Magisk only. It was a little tedious but my root check app says it is rooted. I had trouble with my bank apps. One was so stingy that I had to redo the root using a different app name instead of Magisk. Finally got that working. Then I started getting notifications for a system update. Well, in order to update I had to wait until that version was posted on 1+ website so I could download it and patch it in. I finally did that and eventually got everything back up and running with the update. It was tedious and the phone is finally working again, just like I want it to.
About another week later it began nagging me again to do yet another update and I did not want to go through all that all over again. I went into the settings for that system app to disable the notifications but the switch was greyed out, locked in the on position. I live by important notifications and having that up in my notification area constantly is distracting. So I contacted support and asked how to disable the system updates or the notification. They told me to do what I already tried and I had to send them a screenshot showing that it was greyed out. Then they were trying to talk me into resetting my phone which is scary considering it took me many weeks to set everything all up.
So I said "uncle" and ended up going through the update baloney all over again and getting it rooted like before. Tedious. I checked after doing so and the notification setting switch was still greyed out. So, now it started nagging me to update again only this time wants me to go to OS11 which I am certainly not even ready to try as it is still in its infancy and not interested in taking a chance that something stops working properly on the phone.
I have a root uninstaller app on the phone that disables apps, but it is so old that it is no longer supported and apparently doesn't work with this newer Android version like it did on my old phone. It just brought the app over when I transferred everything from the old phone to this new one. It has app disabling features that apparently do not work for this version of Android. So I cannot use it to disable the System Update app. Now, I can probably install the Pro version of Titanium Backup which has an app freeze feature but not sure if it will work after paying for it. So before I do such a thing I wanted to see if there are any other options to maybe get this switch un-greyed so I can block these notifications. I know also that I can clear the cache and data for the app and it stops for a few days, but then I have to keep doing that once or twice a week and that is just a pitb to keep doing. Besides, 1+ said that it shouldn't be greyed out.
Anybody got any ideas for me to try without jeopardizing having to lose it all and start over? If I knew what I was getting into with Magisk, I would have installed TWRP first so I could have backup images to roll back to. But that is an afterthought now. I don't think Titanium Backup can create an actual flash image of the phone like TWRP. Maybe I should start over and just do it right with TWRP, then Magisk in the first place. But I want to leave that as a last resort.
Ideas, thoughts?
Thanks if you can.
