Question Frustrated with app reload/redraws. RAM performance vs 4a 5G? Anything safe to debloat without losing function? - Google Pixel 6a

I've been very frustrated with my current 4a 5G. It seems to have trouble managing with 6GB of RAM and redraws every time I switch between apps.
I am considering upgrading to the 6A but I see thatit also has 6GB. Has anyone gone from 4a 5G to a 6A? Is performance any better?
The other thing I was wondering if it pays to debloat things like Digital Wellbeing etc (I'm rooted) to free up RAM and improve performance.

I looked up a quick comparison. You will find it below:

}
Pixel 4a 5G:
It seems cpu is almost double the speed of the 4a 5G.
GPU is about 3x.
Memory is about 30% faster.
User experience is 50% better.
Overall, even though it has the same RAM (6GB) you will be dealing with a much faster and smoother phone experience with the 6a.
Also, you're guaranteed a longer shelf life of Android updates, but we all know that, don't we? :3

Thank you for this!

Task swapping wise its the same, I am also struggling. Waiting for 7a and 8 to see if 8gb becomes stock, or maybe 8 will get a 12gb variant.

What all are you all doing on these phones?
I consider myself a fairly power user of the phone (not gaming or streaming but actual work, including collecting 3 gmail and about a dozen other imap accounts, maps (waze and G), communications (incl. G voice, What'sapp and a few others).
I use Nova and I have a half dozen widgets.
I don't see my phone struggling with task swapping or anything else very often (occasional glitch here and there but I'm being generous if I say it happens 4 times a month) so I'm not sure why yours would be so disappointing.
I'm Magisk rooted and running the recent quarterly Beta but my exp. so far has been pretty consistent starting with Android 12 and through to now.
There might be some resource hogs you need to hunt down or otherwise try to figure out your bottleneck. I don't think your experience, or OP's, is very typical.
Good luck.

Enough Free Ram?

My razr maxx hd has been sluggish. When I checked running apps I found that sometimes it uses ALL available ram. The most free I ever see is about 38.
Is this normal? Any suggestions to improve performance?

It's normal for Android. It manages memory differently to Windows. Do some googling about Android memory management. What you need to look for is apps that are using CPU when they should be "asleep". An app like Android Assistant will allow you to look at that. Any app that's using more than, say, 1% cpu when it's not being used isn't playing ball and you should probably kill it. If it continues to do it, I would be removing the app.
Hope that helps
i think this is enough for your simple use , if you want to play games then not
I've seen that answer a lot, about how Android handles memory. Admitadley I haven't done any specific googling myslef. I have, however, observed how my my Linux boxes have handled it and after looking at the image posted I truly am going to be Googling Android specifically because it seems to me that it should free up memory before it gets to the point of the screenshot; can you imagine what the swap file looks like because it makes me wonder if it isn't full, assuming its a compressed RAM swap, and spilling over as a file on the card as well when things might be better already freed up at this point. If it was a desktop then I'd understand, but its a phone and you want a smooth experience out of it as much as can be provided. Its one thing to say "Learn how Android uses RAM" but I sure hope you do when you say it. As for me, I'll stop there and say that I really genuinley intend to find out (have the google search bookmarked for free time) because I know that my phone lags at times before it gets even close to what's posted, that I've never seen it get to what's posted, and that these setting can be easily changed on a rooted device... and that based upon experience with my previous Android that sported way more bloatware but a lot less lag, I've long been wondering if the settings could be just a little better. Usually its not a good idea to second guess the manufacturer but at the same time, a small change in a value can go a long way at times. Not saying you're wrong to say so, just saying that I hope you gave the answer as a person who genuinely understands for themselves and aren't just repeating others, lobie81.
All that said though, and knowing that my phone's ROM is supposed to be one of the more carrier bloat free varieties, what little I can see of the running services suggest that he might have a lot of things going that could be better handled by one process, like sticking it all in Tasker however that's a bold assumption based on a small portion of what's available to be seen.

Multitasking/RAM

You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Xiaomi Mi 5 performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Xiaomi Mi 5 keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.

After playing pokemon, when you go back to Home, the home reloaded!
Multitasking in miui is a bit different and its awesome, also it depends how you configure it in the security app.
U have to lock your apps in the recent apps screen. Otherwise if the app does nothing in the background, OS will kill it.

It's not awesome! It's terrible. The lazy OS don't do your job and play it to back of users.
I hate to lock/unlock the apps, it's feels like a workaround.
Poor RAM management on my Mi5 is the main reason I'm not using it at the moment.
After going back to my HTC 10, it's amazing how terrible it is on the Mi5. To be fair, the 10 has an extra GB of RAM (4 vs 3 on the Mi5), but still, the overview screen (recents) always lists >500 MB free, yet still closes apps so quickly, even music apps while they're playing music.
I'm intend to buy a Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus, the 6GB RAM + 128GB ROM edition, I think it would more fast than Mi 5, But I'm not sure. I saw someone say 6GB OnePlus 3 still shutter.

It is indeed faster. SD821 configuration differs significantly in the LITTLE cluster with 820. The one in Mi 5s Plus is clocked 2.2 GHz, much higher than 1.6 Ghz in Mi 5 Prime/Pro.
In Pro version you have even too much RAM

Never had issues but ram management seems to be poor in miui.
Terrible RAM Management on "Distributor edition" MIUI 7.
Phone sometimes lag (terribly), restarted but still lags.
It even managed to restart during a boss fight in a game! Just wonderful!

Brazilian version with only 2 gb certainly lacks in this deparment.
Pretty smooth and quick in my 4/32gb variant.
Nothing to complain about, my version is Brazilian with 2GB and Mult-task works fine, it just happens that it closes all open apps if I stop using the device for more than 5 hours, it happens when I'm sleeping.
My BR version 2/32 for now is working fine!! But there are many complaints from other users regarding lockups and crashes programs.
Us 2/32 variant (wished I would have gotten the 4) but so far not too bad. Had to replace a 9 month old lg g5 that bootloops when hot.
Might root it if it gets slow but for now it's ok.

4/64 version running pure nexus. Almost keeps too many apps hibernating. When I pull recent apps list to go back to something else I was doing I have found apps that were active days ago still hibernating. Memory has been stable across both rooms I have used.
Stock rom no root no bootloader unlocked antutu scores
64081 not bad.
I'm coming from a Zenfone 2 Z00A 4gb/32gb. Do you guys think that I will suffer with a 2gb RAM phone (Brazilian model only has 2gb)?
I never leave more than 5 apps in multitasking, and I always close all apps before locking screen (except when I'm listening music on Spotify or using YouTube with background playback).
Just using apps like Telegram, Facebook, Tapatalk, Chrome, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram, Greenify, Lastfm Scroobler and sometimes Netflix, Discord, Google Photos... And rarely playing games, and nothing like Asphalt 8, just more simple games that don't get all my battery. I just want to see no lag in my device while using those apps continuously. What you guys think?

By closing apps Android actually uses more memory and battery to reopen them I'm using 2 gig variant everything is smooth so no worries also look for alternatives to heavy apps like facebook metal is great and u can theme it

Question xiaomi 13 8/256Gb

First impression.
Very friendly in size, screen, handling.
MIUI 14 Android 13.0.9 update. Interesting in many ways, but more difficult to discover the properties in the setup than MIUI 13.
Apparently the same problems in the older MIUI configuration. (Difficult to change the MIUI system launcher or cancel the apk download from unauthorized sources, for example)
Chinese apks almost all uninstallable.
Google play pre-installed, Chrome installable, Maps, Google One.
Fast wireless charging
A very good phone, a bit expensive, but much better than the xiaomi 12.
Unlock in 7 days.

An FHD+ screen on a device of this price is a bit of an overkill.
12 pro WQHD+, LTPO (Low Temperature PolySilicon oxide).

Oh, I see. Thanks.
I had the Xiaomi 12 and found that to be an excellent device with very few flaws in my eyes. The only thing I missed was a flat screen. Purchased my Xiaomi 13 12gb 256gb storage from china. Only issue I have found so far was that it has taken a bit of setting up to get the majority of google services on there and working. So far the only thing that does not work is google assistant via voice recognition.

Samsung 10e (SM-G970U1)

Hi there,
recently I purchased the obove mentioned Smartphone.
Its my first Samsung and I was quite scared by the encroaching behavior of OneUI, paired with Google this a no Go.
I heard, that Samsung has locked my Phone very well, so please kann you give a Guide how to get LineageOS on this Phone.
Btw. i live in Germany and i wonder how I came to an US Version of the S10e .....
Thx a lot in advance
If it's the Snapdragon SOC the bootloader is likely locked.
The Samsung UI is extremely customizable. Galaxy store, choose a theme (the native high contrast one works well), then free icon pack, then choose whatever wallpaper you want.
Turn on dark mode.
Get the Good Lock family of apps especially One Handed Operation Plus and these:

All Samsung's should be optimized. I use most of the Samsung apps instead of Google except for gmail and gmaps. Google play Services is normally temporarily disabled unless I need it as is Playstore. It increases speed and reduces battery usage.
Disable global power management and deal with power hogs on a case by case basis. Use app settings first and either Package Disabler or adb edits to take out the trash. Don't go too nuts, dependencies! Most of the small Samsung system apps should be left alone as many provide functionality and appearance enhancements for the UI, they use very little resources.
Disable Bixby and disable the cloud crap if you don't use it. Battery hogs. Get a V30 rated SD card like a Sandisk Extreme and use it as the data drive, all critical data goes here, then back that up.
A stock N10+ (Pie) tricked out as described.
Thank you for the Answer.
But thats not what I had in Mind. I want to get rid of all the Samsungness' Samsung is calling more home than Google. For privacy reasons, I wont use Phone that way.
Btw.
Its a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with 8 Cores

Use a firewall to lock it down. Bixby is the worst in that respect, read its EULA for fun, it's nasty.
If it's using the Snapdragon chipset loading a custom rom probably isn't doable. If it's the Exynos chipset you can.
I used Android Debloater and AdAway. Now i'm feeling much better with the phone
Thx
