Privacy on chinese phones - General Topics

Hey there,
I've been using my Realme 5 Pro with an ungoogled custom ROM for a while now, and I felt safe until I saw a video from The Linux Experiment (Videolink is with timestamp):
In the video, he mentions that he no longer wants to use a Chinese phone because China might force the manufacturer to install spyware. I know that The Linux Experiment is very skilled, but in this case I am not sure if he is a little bit paranoid. ^^
My questions are:
1. Is it possible for Chinese companies to spy on a phone with an open bootloader, custom ROM, and custom recovery?
2.1 I have already read that backdoors on the hardware side might be possible. Is this true?
2.2 How high is the risk of this happening?
2.3 What Information can they get with a backdoor on the hardware side?
3. How concerned should I be, because getting a phone without chinese influence is very hard?
Thanks for your help.
PS: I don't want political discussions. Just the technical view on my concerns, which are my personal opinion.

Is it really worth the effort? wouldn't a Hardwarebackdoor mean, that you only get machine language which has to be processed and sorted?
For a very important device like the phone of a president or minister that might be a practical solution but how much work is it to do that for a massive amount of people?
Thanks for your answer!

Hey Snapdragon port

I came across this in the Opo forum. The Dev says it shouldnt be to hard to port to the Nexus 5. Just wondering if anyone wants to give it a go.

This would be nice, but if I recall correctly there was legal issues with changing the low power core used for the pedometer, for other things.

I didn't even think we had a low power core.

I'm not entirely for sure but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on here that we had a low power core, and that someone had accessed it to use always listening but would have gotten in legal trouble if he had distributed it.

Because that too would help with Doubletap 2 wake...

Yea, but of course, the legality of it is questioned.

Wouldn't help for wake gestures at all.

800 is just as capable as the 801. Low-power core is just used for a hardware pedometer instead of "always listening", as well as legal issues if you were to enable it without permission.

The low-powered core is only good for things that usually require wakelocks (i.e. always listening, music playing, hardware pedometer). Screen-off gestures are done at kernel level and does NOT require a wakelock, so the low-powered core is completely useless in that regard.
Only factor determining if screen-off gestures drains or not is how power is provided to the panel. If it's possible to power the digitizer on separately, then it uses less battery. If you have to power the entire panel on, it'll use more. Either way, it's the exact same thing and not really done much differently across all devices; just make sure the digitizer is powered in any way and wake the device (or whatever) on specific gestures.

Gah I hate being wrong. Whats worse is I actually knew that once too!
But, would there be any legal issues if it was a feature ported from another phone.......
the nexus 5 low power core was defaulted to count steps instead of being a low power core. i dont think that it can be the low power core as we would like it to be. but i guess with lots of work, it could be possible?

Its still using the same low-powered core. Unless you want to somehow rip it out of a OnePlus One and hack it into a Nexus 5 (i.e. pretty much impossible and hardly a good idea)

It's still a low powered core (and the same one as any other device with the Snapdragon 800 SoC), just being used for a different purpose.
I don't know what it would take to reprogram it/use it for other purposes, but its been done before and there was a proof-of-concept, method not released because of the legal ramifications. If there isn't a way around it/loophole, or a legal way to do it, then you'll have to wait a few years until the Nexus 5 becomes an old legacy device that nobody cares about lol

This is like the third time it's been explained to me and I still can't get it right. Don't feel bad. xD
if its a legal issue, then its something that someone would be able to do to legally to their own phone, just wont be able to distribute it. something like posting instructions how to do it would be legal, just distributing the finished mod could be illegal. but i dont see where legality would come into affect on this.

All sorts of strange laws about. Way back when, when i was a blackberry owner, it was against forum rules (crackberry) to discuss or give instructions for rebranding as apparently that was "illegal" in the US.

[Q] Ok Google without charging?

Im not sure if this is possible or a way to make it but i am wondering if its possible to make this work? I know there are apps to do this but i fell there is something you can mod to allow this. If so i can't seem to find it anywhere. Anyone have a idea of how this is done? If not whats the best app for this? Openmic?

Google doesn't provide the option, so no.
It would be extremely silly on the Nexus 5 anyways, since it would be in a 24/7 wakelock.

The low-powered core is also used by a hardware pedometer.
It won't happen until a legal loophole is found, or until the Nexus 5 becomes an old legacy device that nobody cares about in a couple years.

Mysterious water droplet sound randomly occurring

It's driving me mad. Anyone know what it is or how to identify it? It doesn't seem to be associated with any other events. I don't see anything new pop into the notification area or anything

Thanks. Speaking of which, is there another ROM available for my j727vl (sky pro) one? This sub forum is a little unorganized. Maybe the question is has this phone been rooted? (?). Technically I don't know so much how these things work, but I know if I can get this thing rooted I can possibly get wifi hotspot working on it which would be super fantastic. Might you know? Thanks

G9550 Is there an overclocked core?

dear all:
Does the G9550 have an overclocking core? My phone is very slow, I can't stand it. I want to have an overclocking core to make my phone smooth.
If there is no overclocking core, is there a LineageOS 16 version that supports G9550? I did not find support for the G9550 device on the official website.
Thank You

dear :
I reset my phone, but the speed of the operation still has not improved. I must suspect that the software is slow to open because of other reasons. My phone does not have ROOT permission. I will determine whether to obtain the highest permission according to the obtained plan. .
The end of By Alan is my habit, there is no other meaning, I am sorry, I am very sorry.
Thank You

I tried to use the 'package disabler pro' to disable unwanted services, I was surprised to find that the effect was very good, Now the speed is perfect.
Thank You.

Any ROM for P40 Pro modified with google services?

Is there a modified Android ROM to introduce Google services for a Huawei P40 pro, instead of having to do it later with Goglefier or similar? If so, does it allow updates?

after so long, I wonder if there's any progress here?!
We don't have any confirmed way to unlock the bootloader, so with that being said there is no custom roms.

There are ways to unlock it and not insanity expensive either but I think there's no market for it.

Yes there is now, but at the time it wasn't possible. Also pointless at the moment to open up your phone and unlock the bootloader as there's no custom roms in the work.

Its not done by software alone, you have to short a pin or two alongside software etc, not something most people are willing to do.

The method I saw used software test points. And I saw it first hand, it worked flawlessly if yet a bit nerve wrecking. I am not sure if the program is allowed to be mentioned here as it can have illicit uses so I won't say it's name but it's publicly available. I only seen it used on P40 pro + but would assume it works similarly for all P40 series devices.
I uploaded this way twrp, but due to the lack of modified software nothing after that I could not do more. I would need to know how to modify the software
