Debloat tools and battery saving tips - General Topics

To all those who claim to get over 7 hours screen on time, especially by using debloat scripts, using adb to uninstall/ disable pre-installed apps and services, other tweaks, etc.:
Please do us a favour when posting your battery stats:
1. Use your phone in manual brightness mode with brightness set at 50% (if you want, you can increase but not decrease).
2. Do NOT watch videos (local or streaming) for more than 30 minutes during the day.
3. Do not use any app (like browser) for more than 2 hours during the day.
4. If you're having dual SIM, leave both ON.
Now post your battery stats.
In cases where I see people claiming great battery life, I see that much of the battery savings happen because the user was mostly watching videos at very low brightness or just using one or two apps for more than 50% of the time.
These are NOT typical usage. We need to evaluate the effectiveness of changes done by using the phone normally.
For a smartphone, normal usage means leaving all the smart features ON, including but not limited to, WiFi, Mobile Data, Bluetooth, Location, Auto-Brightness, etc. Also keep display resolution at maximum and screen refresh rate at Adaptive (or auto managed by system).
Thanks.

Screen on time without using apps or streaming video? That doesn't make sense. You're basically saying don't use the phone and just leave the screen on. Sounds like a recipe for burn in.
No one is going to leave their screen on without using their phone. Whether it's gaming, social media, streaming media, or web browsing, "screen on time" infers that the user is actually using the phone. Battery age also plays a huge part - my Pixel 5 when new could easily manage 8+ hours of YouTube, but 3 years later it would probably only manage 5 or so....I'm not sure because I keep it plugged in.
"Normal usage" is subjective. My normal usage involves social media and streaming media. Others might do a lot of gaming, which is particularly power intensive. Others might simply use their device as a phone/PDA.

You're saying to limit usage to 2 hours 30 minutes or less, but why would someone's screen be on if they aren't using their device?

I was referring specifically to just video watching or using just one or two apps for an extended amount of time. Normal usage would involve a lot more like phone calls, video calls, chat, social media, etc.
In most battery stats that show a high SOT, I see that videos pretty much are the main usage (like 4 to 5 hours), browser for a couple of hours, and rarely or minimal use of other apps.
I too can get 7 hours or more of SOT on my S22U if I only watch YouTube at night (minimum brightness). But that isn't typical usage. On an average, I get only about 5 hours of SOT and a standby of about 12 hours (17 hours since last charge) when the battery is around 15%.

Just to prove my point, I'm attaching battery stats from two different devices that demonstrate phenomenal battery life.
In both cases, I used the phones primarily for video streaming over Bluetooth and browsing the internet. Although the Motorola phone has only the most essential apps, the iQOO phone is pretty much a full setup.
I did NOT use any debloat scripts or uninstall apps using ADB. I simply disabled unnecessary apps and services wherever the system settings allowed me to.
CONCLUSION
The battery life is largely a function of the quality of apps installed, network reception and screen brightness. Debloat scripts and other battery saving tips often only provide a placebo effect.

Getting reasonable battery life

Hey guys, just wanted to throw out what I have found re: reasonable battery life.
As most of you know, you can tell when the phone is not getting what I consider reasonable battery life.
Here are the things that I found worth doing:
1: Greenify apps if you can. Unfortunately, Facebook is one of the worst violators of battery and if you greenify it, you will go a long way towards having decent battery life. Of course, then you don't get your Facebook notifications, but for me, this is a plus.
2: Battery Doctor. You can set it to kill apps when the screen is off. There is a whitelist as well so you can keep certain apps running instead being killed.
3: Adjust the auto brightness curve. This seems to work well. Keep the screen reasonably bright but no more than necessary. I think this might work better than just a fixed brightness level because if the area gets really bright, at least the screen will react and become brighter so you can still see the screen. To me, the screen is a battery killer.
4: If you have a super AMOLED display supposedly you can black out the screen with a dark UI. Not sure how much this helps.
5: Custom Kernel. I have only tried IceCode and insanity. Both were giving reasonable battery life. I tried the lower voltage tables in IceCode but didn't notice much difference.
For me, even though I tried several different ROMs, if I did the above, I got reasonable standby/sleep times. It was usually 1 to 1.5 percent per hour in sleep. When the screen was on, battery life was totally dependent on screen brightness. For me, reasonable is with decent use - check/reply to mail a few times an hour, browse web, text, talk abut an hour a day, etc... from 7a-3p and still have around 70% left. For me, the phone still needs charging every day though. Any other tips???
For Facebook, I use the Tinfoil For Facebook app, which is pretty much just a wrapper of the mobile browser version. Beside the battery drain the official app causes, the privacy concerns with the addition of them listening in on your mic makes this worth it.
Hi all. Can anyone please suggest which Rom & kernel combination gives best battery life for Ville c2 . Main use is web browsing on mobile data & some casual gaming.
I recently got this device and am new to this (c2) forum.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda premium
I use the "Snapdragon BatteryGuru" application.
A feature I love is that I can set what apps have to be updated ever, when I use them or basing on my use. For example I installed Facebook, Twitter, a mail client and Skype on my phone. I can choose that the mail client has to be updated ever, Facebook and Twitter basing on my use, and Skype when I use it.
BatteryGuru can enable some features like the Wi-Fi or the Mobile data basing on my use. For example, I surf the internet between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM. The Snapdragon's application registers this activity and it will automatically enable internet connection between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM.
Another feature I like is that I can enable a low power mode when the battery reaches a choosen level and disable, for example, the mobile data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, apps update, etc.
Awesome app!
I saw that app. Will need to check it out. Sounds like useful features.
Thanks! I'll try Greenify with Facebook.
I'm quite satisfied with the AOSPA 4+ ROM (stock kernel). I unplug the phone at 9am and around 10pm - 56% battery remaining (with Greenify + Auto brightness + Dark UI theme) with normal usage like browsing/checking emails/phone calls every now and then.

[Q] Battery life not as it should be?

Hi
First of all I'm back on Android and back on the forum after four years of iOS, really enjoying Android and the forum again!
I just got my Z3 for about 2 weeks now and I'm not getting the 2days out of my single charge, when I take the charger out at about 7 in the morning, I'm left with about 30-40% at 11 a'clock at night. I'm just wonderring if these 2 days should be able to reach with heavy whatsapp usage (groups, really almost receiving a couple of messages a minute ) and moderate Facebook, Snapchat, browsing, and maybe some app downloads? Are there some settings you guys recommend to increase battery life? (already using stamina, doesn't really make a big difference).
Thanks in advance!
You can follow the battery life thread.
I have autosync, location and WiFi calling enabled and I still get 6-9 hours of screen time out of a 24 hr period with heavy usage with or without WiFi calling. At first I got no more than 5-6 Hrs screen time but as I used it and it settled/calibrated it got better.
Whats your signal strength like? It can have a big impact.
As for battery saving tips:
Try turning off or reducing the nunber of apps syncing. Facebook can also be a killer at times, I disabled, I barely use it and when I do need to I just use the mobile site.
Also turn off background WiFi scanning and set the following option -> WiFi off when screen off or on w/screen off only when connected to power.
Lastly try calibrating the battery as even Apple as you probably know reccomends for their devices:
1. Full drain
2. Full uninteruppted charge
3. Discharge with regular use to 0-1%
4. Full charge and use normally
As for stamina its not done anything for me either so I disabled it. More like placebo effect lol, I think they will fix it.

Thank you for quick response!
I've searched for a battery life thread but I couldn't find one, where can I find it?
My signal strength most of the time has all the bars, except at my house I have only one or two bars in various rooms, I didn't know about its big impact so this might indeed be a reason for my battery drain. Turned off almost all the syncing for my apps, and did the WiFi settings you mentioned, if the setting 'WiFi off when screen off" is enabled should my WiFi be of when I light up the screen without unlocking my phone or just really when the screen is off? Thanks for the tips, I hope I can get more hours out of it now!
At some time I had a short battery too and after those same steps I have 3 days battery without any problem:

Battery normal?

Well I have a less than a month old galaxy s6.
It's constantly connected to wifi or 4g. (90% of the time)
I also have a geo location on with the high setting (GPS/Data/Wifi)
I use facebook, instagram, snapchat, messenger(Facebook) app, and spotify the most (Power hungry? or not)
I see and hear people getting at least 5-6 hours of SOT without root or custom ROM, but I only get maximum of 2.5 hours of SOT and 9-10 hours of total running time.
So I was wondering if it was my phone's problem or my usage habit problem.
I turned sync off from the settings if that helps.
How often are you using spotify while your screen is off?
Those apps drain battery, go to settings and data usage, restrict background data for each individual app that you don't need constant updates, like Facebook and Instagram, not Spotify since you would actually be using it in the background. WiFi also drains more battery compared to 4g when on standby(maybe it's just how mine is configured)
Sent from my SM-G920T1 using Tapatalk
2.5 hours SOT on stock rom is not surprising. All of those apps are known battery hogs, and you don't even have to use them much because once they are installed, they stay in memory and run in the background. If you want to get serious about maximizing battery, flash a debloated rom and use Greenify + Servicely + App Ops to restrict wakeups.
Edit: I routinely get 4.5+ hrs SOT and 30+ hrs total standby, but I don't use fb, snapchat, instagram, spotify or whatsapp. I do, however, stream a lot of music via Deezer.

Quite alot. I dont use music app anymore. Once I leave the house(wifi zone) I use spotify offline mode. I thought that could save me data and battery
Wakelocks
Oh, also is there a way to check for wakelock in the stock ROM?
I came from nexus 4 which was super easy to root and install custom roms on it.
However, galaxy s6 is not a cheap device so I want to keep the warranty/knox before rooting and putting custom roms on it.
Trying to look for the max battery without any rooting for now
There's no reason to be getting such a low SOT on stock. I use whatsapp, facebook, and I stream a lot on Deezer through my car on bluetooth using 4G, and get around 5 hours every day.
The only app in there I would point the finger at is snapchat. Camera is power hungry and if you're taking a pic every time you send a message (Yes I know people who do this), then that will have a massive effect on battery. Spotify offline mode won't cause too much trouble.
I would check battery stats and possibly install GSAM just to confirm which app is eating the most that'll give you an idea of what to modify.
Do you have any enhanced features switched on like Wifi calling, Voice over LTE or maybe even NFC switched on?
Also location features can cause a drain, I turn mine off unless I specifically want it.

I dont think canadian models have wifi calling or VoLTE and I always turn my NFC off.
I will try turning my location off when i dont need it.

Tips to For Increasing Battery Life on the Galaxy S9

Sooner or later you will find yourself looking to save some battery life. here are a few ways.
1- Disable Always-On Display
2- Put apps to sleep
3- Lower screen resolution
4- Use Dark wallpaper/ Shorten screen timeout
5- Auto Screen brightness off
6- Turn Wifi off when not in use.
The video shows how to do these if you're not familiar with the settings on the phone. Feel free to add to the list.
Honestly I don't get any better battery life when using the phone at FHD rather than QHD. If anything it seems to me that the software had become so optimized for QHD that it may actually turn out more SOT and general battery life times. But that may just be my experience, not sure

Why not let it fall below 10% ?
I've yet to see any conclusive evidence that the battery life improves when you lower the resolution. Best argument I've seen for doing this is an improvement in scrolling and animations

And every year I laugh at it because every year people buy the best phone on the market and then make a list of how to disable everything and cripple it so they can squeeze another hour of battery life in.
I get it because I used to be obsessed with battery life but then I realized I have chargers, wired and wireless, everywhere.
Install BK Package Manager and disable all bloatware.
Quick tip for excellent battery life:
1. Go to wifi advanced settings and tell your phone to turn off wifi during sleep unless the phone is charging. ( helps a little)
2. Turn on data saver on your phone (so when ur phone is off it updates using ur data instead of wifi. since wifi is off during sleep if u did step 1)
3. Go into data saver settings and give unlimited data access to specific apps that you use such as Google play services( for account and data backup) messenger, gmail and any other important apps)
4. Go Into your battery settings, under unmonitored apps, remove every app sitting in there. Then go into always sleeping apps, and set everything to sleep except the apps you use the most and want to receive regular notifications for. (So of course Google play services and Samsung services if u use those to back up your data and some messaging apps and mail apps, messenger, snapchat etc)
If you do these steps you are preventing your phone from randomly syncing information. (The biggest culprits being the apps you don't really use such as the Samsung apps like AR EMOJIS, ant services, galaxy app store, etc).
this has saved me significant battery life. Averaging about 8hrs screen on time and get abt 2 days battery with relatively heavy use. (Inbox,YouTube, instagram, snapchat, bleacher report etc).
Hope this helps

Are you inside a building during most of the standby time? Or anywhere that would cause a weak signal? I found inside large building or places where cell reception is low causes a lot of battery drain during standby

No just no. Feels like i disabled every app there is. 4 hours sot. Maximum 24 hours total time. Draining 10% minimum during sleep if left unplugged for (7 hours) i put every app in sleep. Cant find samsung ar etc in (always sleeping apps tho) i set everything except for messenger. Snap.waze. bbs and spotify in always sleep. Still not sure it will work. Aod on. Auto brightness on.. maybe i shouldn't complain. But when people get 7 hours sot i feel like i need to complain. I had bad battery time with my s7 aswell.

I understand why you would be skeptical. i will try to get a screenshot the next time i have a chance.
Another thing I did notice is screen brightness is one of the biggest battery killers on the phone. Maybe try power saving mode but only use the -10% brightness option that should help a little bit or manage your brightness manually. Hope that helps
I'm pretty disappointed with the battery life on my S9+ to be honest. Today for example, with minimal usage, after unplugging at about 9:30 am I was down to 35% by noon.
I've recharged it and now left it sitting - it is consuming power at a rate of 1% per 10 minutes, just sitting on the table without me using it. I'm at home, with a strong 4G signal, WiFi router is in the same room, and Bluetooth is disabled.
I moved from an LG G6 to this phone because I was tired of the LG hanging and stumbling to do basic things, but at least the battery lasted a little longer - I could sit it on the table and I'd only lose a couple of percent over the course of a few hours.

[Tutorial] How to get 14hours of Screen On Time!

I'm in HAVOC 2.0 OFFICIAL (Pie), but it will work with ANY custom rom. If you don't have the 1st option Smart Pixels in "Havoc Settings" ('cause you're using another Custom Rom) you can use the app: "Pixoff: Battery Saver" or similar...
Tutorial>>>>>
1 - Havoc Settings > Screen > Turn on Smart Pixels (62% of pixels disabled), and increase the brightness just a little to compensate.
2 - Use Greenify along with Greenify4Magisk module to freeze all GCM apps.. But you can just disable GCM and other stuff in "MyAndroidTools Pro" by yourself decreasing the need of freezing unnecessary apps... but you have to understand how android works or you will break your system (USE WITH CAUTION). (A 1 million dollar tip here: Disable things like "analytics", "gms", "GCM" (if you're not finding those words tick this icon "<-->" to expand the service names..
P.S.: Only play with Third Party apps... Don't mess with system apps!
3 - Use Naptime to make Doze mode work properly...
4 - Use AfWall+ to block all apps that don't use internet to leak data and hog your battery unnecessarily.
Extra Magisk modules I'm using:
- AdGuardDNS Adblocker (unofficial)
- Sysconfig Patcher (sp) helps to doze Google Play Services and system apps that hogs battery...
- Swap Torpedo -> to SPEED memory.. my old devices 1gb ram runs blazing fast with this and it works so f**cking good in Note 5 aswell..
* You can turn all animations off systemwide and your experience will be better IMHO
You can tell me if it worked or not.. But I'm getting 14hours of SCREEN ON TIME. :victory::laugh:
In the screenshot below I was in 7h39mins of Screen On Time with 50%... I'm just sharing all these stuff 'cause I finally manage to have a GREAT battery life. I used to mess with Amplify app once and didn't have so good experiences (Phone app missing calls and whatsapp doesn't showing notifications), but maybe someone else manage to get a better SOT than mine, using it properly..
https://imgur.com/oT0FXAy
Nice share
But usually the SOT is not the similar that you would get from 100 to 50 % battery and from 50 to 0 % battery. So it's not fair to say the SOT would double by sharing a screenshot of 100 to 50 % of usage.

If my usage will keep the same (4G always on: Whatsapp + Opera (facebook site mainly) + Instagram + editing photos on Snapseed + gallery), my estimated SOT is 12-14 hours.. I will post a new 100% test screenshot to prove you.
I mean, if the mAh consumption will keep the same over the same kind of usage, it's easy to trace a statistic number over it. Ok ok.. You want proof, just test it and tell me.. I had to plug the phone in PC to install some last apks.. But tonight was my final installs and tomorrow I will test it from 100% to almost 0%
Getting 11 hours of SOT on Revolution OS & Insigniux kernel and no tweaks at all. My usage consists of a lot of YouTube, reading books on the Kindle app, playing some games, and the usual social media (whatsapp, twitter, instagram). I also listen to a lot of music via bluetooth headset (about 5 hours per day). The phone lasts almost 2 days with such a usage. So yeah, I think this is more than enough for the average user such as myself, no need for all the hassle you posted above. It's really unnecessary. At this point, this is just turning to a "who has the best SOT" battle. Even 7/8 hours of SOT is something great for this device, while 800/1000$ flagships are struggling to push over 5 hours of SOT.
Thanks a lot for the time spent writing this. Would you have more information about the firmware and kernel you're using ?
First, to everyone that read OP, realize there are some inaccuracies. Sorry man.
Smart pixel settings and apps like PixOff only save battery for OLED displays. HAVOK OS is available for multiple devices and this feature is beneficial for devices with OLED displays, but does not make a difference to LCDs.
Our phone has an LCD display which cannot actually "turn off" a pixel . It consumes the same amount of battery no matter what color it displays. Display brightness makes the biggest difference in display battery consumption.
So by turning on "smart pixel" and increasing the brightness you are actually HURTING your battery life overall.
Secondly, you only tested from 100-50%. You will ALWAYS get vastly more battery life from the top 50% than the bottom, because batteries voltage does not drop linearly, it is chemical reaction that is actually quite hard to measure accurately.
There have been many times where I was "getting 14-15 hours SOT" in the top half, but then watch as your battery drops from 40-20 from only 1 hour of light use. I can almost promise you this guy won't actually get more than 11 hours by the time he hits 0.
Use it from 100-0 at least 10 times , showing 13-14 hours of SOT and I will actually believe you are on to something.
On MiUI 9.5.17.0 I already can achieve close to 14 hours SOT, but that is within 1 day 10 hours usage. Usually I get 11-13 hours only within 1+ day usage. On AOSP, specificly RR 6.2.0, I easily reach 4-5 hours SOT by 70% (which I usually charge it already), 15 hours if interpolated to 2 days usage. 10 hours SOT is almost guaranteed. Last test is 13 hours SOT within 2 days 2 hours. If you want to see what is the configuration and usage, just check the link. I prefer to state my configuration and usage during the test, to show any possible different variable.
1. SmartPixel AFAIK is useless in IPS LCD. I would prefer the full maximum resolution as not to downgrade my user experience
2. I don't use any greenify, simply use the battery optimization from android. I whitelist several apps : Automagic, GMD gesture, Whatsapp, MiXplorer. I never clean my recent/RAM. I remove the "nuke button" from the configuration.
4. I don't know starting from which version, but since Nougat 7.0+, we have the setting to restrict data usage for each app in the app info. I simply create a flow to automagically open the app info everytime I install new app and decide whether to restrict the internet usage or not.
For ads, I just use hosts based - adaway. I don't limit play services, just let it run normally. I don't tweak much on the RAM side, but I adjust the minfree on every reboot (using automagic) to the lower value than default by RR. This is to let more apps stay on RAM as long as possible.
I don't want to limit the phone's perfomance to ridiculous level. Smartphone are meant to be used. The battery used is the proof we enjoy technology. Of course if the drain is unusual and wasted, we have to troubleshoot and find the culprit, as I have done in the wifi deep sleep drain bug. But other than those exception, I want the full user experience I can get from my phone.
SOT Variation
SOT is kinda non standard way to measure the usage. It varies depends on the user habit and usage behaviour. I am using dual SIM with good signal in most of the time, no microsd. Common usage :
- idle with no internet : 0,3-0,4%/hour
- idle with wifi : 0,5%/hour
- idle with LTE : 0,6-0,7%/hour
- Screen on dim (brightness < 10%) : 5%/hour (outside of idle drain)
- screen on bright (brighntess > 80%) : 10%/hour (outside of idle drain)
- Play game : Depends on game, it can consume 8-20%/hour
Using basic math, If 25% are used for the idle with wifi, I can get 25% / 0,5%/hour = 50 hours usage. 75% for screen dimmed, I can get 75% / 5%/hour = 15 hours. So 15 hours SOT is possible within 2 days usage. This interpolate nicely with my 70% 4-5 hours SOT.
But If I use the phone outdoor and the brightness increase, I can only get half of that, 7,5 hours SOT only within the same 2 days. Or maybe 9 hours SOT within 20 hours usage. If I have bad signal, it will reduce even further, 5-6 hours SOT only. Playing heavy game (PUBG) usually reduce the SOT by half too. So playing PUBG in dimmed brightness will consume 10%/hour and in brighter, 20%/hour. Increasing/decreasing the graphic also modify the drain per hour. Usually playing heavy game result in max 5-7 hours SOT only. But sometimes I can still get projected SOT around 10 hours, depends on what game I play and how many hours I played it.
Taking it to the extreme, we can spare 10% for the wifi idle, giving 20 hours usage and 90% for screen, giving 18 hours SOT. Which mean we can achieve 18 hours SOT within 20 hours usage. I am quite addicted to the phone. I use it for browsing, learning language, reading ebook, watching video, designing flow in automagic, usually without any gaming. But even then, it is very difficult to use the phone straight for 18 hours within those 20 hours (without gaming).
It is very difficult for me in usual daily activity to test the battery life till 1%. I usually have to plugged the phone for screen mirroring or transfer data. It will skew the battery usage then. I also usually just charge the phone at around 60-70, sometimes higher, sometimes lower.
At this kind of battery life and perfomance (SD636), I am very happy with current usage without the need to tweak so much again. Just use your phone as usual and only troubleshoot the battery life if something drain too much without doing anything useful. Enjoy your smartphone.
