Best use for a spare phone - General Topics

I have a OnePlus 8T that can be put into some interesting use. Any interesting ideas?
Someone said that Pixel Experience ROM (and some other ROMs too) would help in getting unlimited storage in Google Photos (in storage saver quality). That would be one very good use.
What are some other interesting possibilities?

The phone is in pretty much brand new condition. So there should be much better things that can be done with it.

New Android handheld gaming console

The Yinlips YDP-G18 is probably the cheapest Android device you can find with dedicated game controls. It would be cool if someone could cook up an updated English language ROM for it.

Hello,
This is a very promising console, we are currently testing and we must admit that this console is doing pretty well ... It's just a few thoughtful developers to take advantage of the machine maximum.
Go on google and write "CAANOO forumactif" to see the test!
The root is effective and the market is available.
Sorry for my poor english, i'm french
They already rooted it and installed android market on it. IMHO, it should get its own section. Having stripped down froyo or gb roms on it could further improve performance and battery life.
If I had the coin, I'd buy it right away. It's priced at $125 with free shipping. And it's the projection of my most beautiful dreams. Except for the two cameras it has.
It's actually a good product that can have enormous potential. Its biggest flaw is its current autonomy should be 3 hours with Wi-Fi enabled.
The screen is resistive, but responds well. It allows running N64 and PSX games fairly easily and without overclock.
I would love to also see a section for Android handheld and quickly see the arrival of Roms Customs and modified kernels.
For those who want to take the tests, the French member of the community are being Caanoo get them to see what she has in the stomach. I'm happy to keep you informed of the various tests that we will achieve.
I'm also getting one of these, looks promising with some tweaks or a new custom rom will be much better
Only 3 hr battery life? You'd think they'd be able to get more in there. But cool concept nonetheless.
Those who want to see the handheld running you can go see the videos that were made by @ BAFelton at: Sorry but i can't link URL, so Go on Youtube and search BAFelton61
It gives a good idea of what is possible.
Also, @ qbertaddict also examines the machine
Will get back to you almost certainly after the new year. Ordered it yesterday and they announced 15-20 business days until arrival
Yinlips has announced the update 2.3 (gingerbread) on the G18. This is good news to know that there is a follow-up from the manufacturer!
k0en, here too ?
Yeah i'm follow up this awesome device too, and still check what is possible to do with .... Christmas is coming...
Why not a CyanogenMod ? lol

otherwise, it is the iReadyGo, not the G18 Yinlips. The prototype iReadyGo is not marketed. Here we talk about the G18. Is there any devs interested in working on improving it and make some changes?

From what I can see in the videos, it's Chinese by default but can be changed to English. Since it's an Android device, in theory you would eventually be able to cook custom roms for this thing.
This is a steal, even though the touchscreen is resistive the specs are very good.
My interests are in the details, though: Does the analog stick work as a mouse in android? How is the screen quality with brightness and color? How easily can ROMs be customized?
If these things met with satisfaction I would buy today.

What new android phone should I get?

Hi,
I'm using since many years a LG Optimus 4X HD rooted but with the stock Rom,
I did not find any custom ROM that would be half way up to date and would run well on it.
Now there is kind of a security SNAFU the Stagefright bug (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stagefright_(bug)) that king of makes continuing the use of the phone a No Go that is unless some one points me to a reliably working ROM that would have that bug fixed....
Anyways What new phone should I get to ensure I will not find my self in a similar situation for at least 5+ years using that phone. That means a long therm community support must be to be expected.
Yes I know thats a long time, but for me any non x86 device is just a toy that does not have to do much:
1. Navigation (Navigon)
2. VPN
3. RDP, VNC, ssh client
4. taking pictures
5. playing mp3
6. surfing the web
What I would else require would be a micro-SD card slot.
Now what sounds really well is the http://shop.fairphone.com/fairphone2.html but lets be honest for 530€ I can buy 3 to 4 reasonably cheep smartphoens each time with an up to date android on it. So the price is simply to high.
I would say that a reasonable price for me would be around 300€
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Best game performance

Hello all. I bought this phone in 2018 and kept it for half a year. All that time I used ROMS and stuff. Since camera was my most important thing I always used stock roms. Now I got it out of a drawer to make it a retro android emulation device. So the only thing that I care for is to have the best possible speed and performance. What do you have to recommend for this kind of use?
No opinions?

Can only suggest to go with stock oos11. If you want to go with Custom ROMS , my view of best roms with a balance of speed and performance is as below
1. Lineage OS -- If you are not worried about Photography and sheer performance. This will be the best choice.
2. Dot OS or Palladium OS : I am using DOT OS and i love it's customisations and performance. For photography i have uninstalled Gcam 7.3 and installed 8.1 . Palladium on the other hand has few glitches but fairly neat and clean experience of Android similar to DOT.
The choice is yours, but these are my personal favorites. Some would recommend using Pixel experience or Paranoid. Personally out of all ROMS used , DOT os hasn't let me down with my tests or performance.
Thanks for the answer. I don't care about customization or about photography. I will setup this device just as a gaming platform. So I only care about the best performance.

Question Huawei MatePad paper custom firmwares

Hi!
First of all, sorry for posting in this thread , but there is no other thread for the Huawei matepad paper.
My question is if there is or will be any custom firmwares for this tablet, because even if its a good e-reader, notetaking device, i don't trust it for handling my private documents, because its Huawei and also it runs Harmony OS.
Maybe my answer comes after 1,5 a month, but I'll give You my 5 cents. Unfortunately, as there is no way to unlock Huawei this days do not count on any custom roming.
It's stupid of them, but sadly that's the way they choose to do it.

I love this device. Got it somewhere in September and have to say it crushes any other eink Android tablets (got few, mostly made by Onyx). It's superresponsive, doesnt lag at all and, with help of Aurora, has access to Play Store and all ebook apps available there.

sorry, bro... but our tablet is dead as a "custom-rom-enabled" device
it works good (yes, with old Android 10 VM and old HMOS 2, but good) without modifications.
I hope our chinese brothers makes HUAWEI to release some sources and some unlock-software that helps us make our device great again!
Price was good, so I've bought it.
If I knew that it will not receive an upgrade to HMOS 3 and not able to unlock and flash some custom rom, I didn't buy it
Are You sure?
On their HOS3 site I see that Paper is included: https://consumer.huawei.com/en/harmonyos-3/
They are still updating other devices and Paper is not the flagship device unfortunately.
And even without HOS3 it's great device. A10 won't be forgotten by Google for few more years, so not a problem for me.

Recomenedations for creating a emulation mini portable

Currently I have two phones Xiaomi phones in my possession, a redmi note 8 Pro and a Mi 9T, both with 128GB of memory. I would like to use one of them as a mini emulation portable and the other as my phone, hopefully emulating PS2 and Gamecube games but I'm happy with N64 games. Since both of them have similar specs I would love to hear you guys opinion, specially since the Note 8 Pro has SD card memory capability.
Also I would like to use a USB C controller like the Backbone One, Razer Kishi V2 or GameSir X2 so you guys know if there are any compatibilities issues with the devices and these controllers or any of them are fine?
Finally since MIUI is bloated AF, for performance should I load a custom ROM? If so what do you recommend? I have done basic debloating in MIUI before with ADB but in my opinion is too buggy and I have installed custom ROMS before without problems so I'm more inclined to install a custom ROM.
Thank you.

Don't have any of the specific hardware you mentioned but it should work. I just wonder if a little USB-hub might useful (more controllers, charging etc)...

Sure, can only help! Did you check if any LOS is available?
https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/#xiaomi
There is probably more in XDA's threads... just use the search above, stock ROMs are moot
Just one thing: How would you attach it to a TV/monitor? I tried such gaming setup years ago with a Note 3 and it was running... but I never managed to hook it to a bigger screen... (nowadays I'd prefer a PC with linux proper anytime over those crooked phones)
