Question 7 pro battery drain - Google Pixel 7 Pro

In last few days I noticed battery drain. And as well I think it started same time I noticed screen flickering when in battery settings. Video explaining attached. As you can see its fine until I get deeper into settings then "system operacyjny Android" starts flashing slightly and screen flickers and it's laggy. It stops and then starts again Anyone else has similar problem?

XDA allows 200+MB attachments?
It'd be easier to describe (in English?) the settings path you took.

I was surprised too sorry it's in battery settings and that's what's flashing "android os"

Hi mate, I do have the same problem with the battery settings view. But no solution so far.

Looks like a small glitch then. What app can you suggest to have a proper look into battery usage? Like idle etc with details. Something is draining my battery. I have accu battery now but I don't see any details there

I've rooted all android phone since I bought my pixel 7 pro a few days ago. Don't want to root again because of magisk hide etc. But there a a few things, like the battery section or the missing nfc quick tile, that makes me to want to flash a custom Rom. But so far I stay strong and keep the stock Rom.

I don't have that glitch... Rooted here.

I don't have that glitch, either

Perhaps a full device wipe is needed.
If I continually update and re-root my phone each month without the "wipe' parameter, I eventually run into some not-super-noticeable OS issues. But, of course, once that occurs I just make a Google Drive backup and re-image my phone with the same factory image. However, I just leave the wipe parameter in the flash-all batch file when I do this and any OS or root problems seem to be resolved after doing so.

You don't need to re-root with every release. Just use Pixel Flasher.

If I remember correctly, Pixel Flasher is re-rooting after full system images are flashed. Or perhaps it updates over the OTA method? Regardless, I have never used it as I have never needed to, haha =P. Re-rooting only takes me a a few seconds =)

So, it is re-rooting after the updated system image is flashed, haha =D.
Just for clarification, rooting a Pixel is done in the act of patching the stock init_boot.img and then flashing it. When the system is updated, the entire factory image is flashed, and thus, the previously patched init_boot.img is replaced with a stock, unpatched init_boot.img. At this point in time, the phone is no longer rooted. But that is why users like us re-root our phones afterwards =). The Pixel Flasher is just incorporating that re-rooting process into its convenient, ease-of-use application experience - which is a very good thing to provide an option for.
Every day is a new day to learn something different =).

battery drain on a smartphone can be caused by various factors, including:
Screen brightness: A bright screen can drain the battery quickly. Try reducing the brightness of your screen to conserve battery life.
Background apps: Apps running in the background can consume a lot of power. Make sure to close all unnecessary apps when you're not using them.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS: If these features are left on when not needed, they can drain your battery. Try turning them off when you're not using them.

The thing is that that drain started on Friday I think. Didn't install any new apps etc. I have around 30% phone iddle - is that normal?

What do you mean 30% idle?

Like that

Ehhh when idle apps are still running in the background checking for stuff etc... It'd be better if you used some other battery analyzer like GSAM for more details.

Ok so looks it's back to previous battery performance after yesterday's update. Definitely flickering problem is fixed and that's my today's battery result. And the phone idle seems gone down from 25-30 to 15%

I have the same issue since the last update from I think Monday evening.
Since then my battery drains a lot faster then before. I have a loss of 30% during a night without doing anything within these 7 hours. Before the update it had around 6-8% less in the morning. And it drains a lot fast during the day too. I have 100% after charge in the morning, go to work and when I come back it is down to ~30%. Last week it was on ~60% or more when I came home.
No new apps, nothing changed except the update.
This is really annoying me!
Don't want to wipe the hole phone as I don't use any Cloud on my ohones and would have to backup via MyPhoneExplorer and set up all by hand again.
Or is there any backup solution to backup everything on a phone all at once without root?
Oh and my Idle has around 30% battery usage, before the update it was on maybe 10% during a day.

I've been through this. For no reason, it's an insane battery drain. I ended up wiping and reflashing the newest firmware, staying on Stock Kernel and restoring my Swift backup - user apps/data only - and only logged into the apps I actually use and it got better. Not perfect, but better. After I week I reflashed the Kira Kernel and it's been back to pretty stellar again, like you said, only dropping a few percentage points at night

Is anyone else getting massive battery drain?

Since I upgraded tp 4.0.4 my battery life has been completely terrible (nexus s GSM, stock, latest glados kernel) even though I don't use it the entire day, it drains over half in about 4 hours. Anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this? It was perfectly fine before the update and would last days if I didn't use it, and about 12 hours if I did. Right now it's just unusable.
BetterBatteryStats and/or a fresh install (data/factory reset, format /system, optionally format /boot, install ROM).

Are you using a custom ROM?
I've had the same problem when I was in stock 4.0.3, which is why I decided to root my phone and resort to custom ROM's and kernels. Now my phone is doing ok in the battery department and is also much more snappier and smoother. Oh and most custom ROM's are already using 4.0.4 anyway.
Let's try and be scientific about your problem, here are some things you may want to try out first to improve battery life:
turn off wifi when not in use
turn off automatic syncing if you don't need it
set your network mode to 2G only if you're not using the internet
turn off mobile data when not browsing/using the internet
install the watchdog lite app/widget from the Google Play store so you can monitor rogue apps that are sucking up juice
do not set your screen brightness to AUTO, but manually adjust it when you need to. you can do this either in the settings menu or thru the power control widget
This are the things I can think of off the top of my head. If this doesn't improve your battery life, even just a bit, you may have no choice but to resort to drastic measures....and go to the dark side.
Hope this helps! Cheers!
mine is okay
Batt I think it quite good on 4.0.4. I can get about 23hrs of usage. Some wifi, some 3g (fb, whatsapp, updating apps, email), some music. Stock ICS.
I had this issue after stock 4.0.4 update from 4.0.3.
I found mediaserver using more battery than it should, so I;
1) Copied all files and folders from /sdcard to PC
2) Re-format /sdcard
3) Re-store all files and folders back to /sdcard
Mediaserver process is now minimal and battery is good again
Ok thanks for the suggestions guys, reformatting my phone would be alot of effort on my part due to how much time I spent setting it up so I would like to use that as a last resort.
I installed battery stats but I can't decipher what it's saying so if someone would be as kind to explain? I took screenshots of everything in an album and I would really appreciate it if someone had a look in the album below.

Well for one, you have chunks of bad signal(red bars). That right there can kill a battery quickly. The other stuff you may be better off saving the dump file and posting it as an attachment over at the BBS thread. The guys over there are pretty informative and may be able to give you more stuff to look at to help you out.
The red bars are when I was using the underground, the battery drains just as fast overnight. I will look for that thread, thanks.
Edit: I do not stay on the underground overnight, and I have a good signal in my apartment (you can see it's fine when I arrive)

yep...a weak network signal will drain your battery a lot faster. if you're not using it to text, call or surf, or if you're just going to play games, might as well go airplane mode for a while, or at least until you get above ground where the signal is stronger.
After a good couple of hours not using the phone in a good signal area create a log and post it. Preferably get the hours just after charging.

I'll have a good look tomorrow with some suggestions. Had a fair bit on the last couple days with minimal internet access.
What ROM and Kernel are you using right now?
There are a couple of interesting details there but nothing that i can point out that will take you from 100% -> 30% in that time.
Some things to test:
-Turn phone off (noting charge), remove battery, replace battery, leave phone off overnight and turn it on in the morning, again noting the new charge
-Keep data off and see if battery is still draining / Airplane mode
-Uninstall half of your apps and see if it still happens. If not, add half of the apps you uninstalled. If so, uninstall half of the apps you have left, and so on.
-Do a clean install and try for 2 - 3 days, see if it still happens (preferably a stock ROM, preferably from fastboot images)
-Attempt going back to Gingerbread and try for 2 - 3 days (preferably a stock ROM, preferably from fastboot images)
These steps can (and should) be done pretty much in order and will rule out ALOT of possible reasons and give possible solutions some merit. Let me know how this goes.

Using latest stable cyanogenmod + tried glados and netarchy and matrix kernels, all the same result. Will try what you said, also I bought a replacement battery to see if the actual battery is faulty (weird because it used to be fine). As for the airplane mode thing I already tried that, to no avail.
edit: should add that was using stock 4.0.4 before cyanogenmod.

XZ 41.3.A.2.128 excessive battery drain

Anyone experiencing excessive battery drain with the May patch update? Android system drains the battery too much. I just reset my phone 2 days ago, installed my usual apps, updated the system and then this happens now. Any fix on this?
Hello,
It's actually a well known problem in the community
1. I have submitted a report to Sony and request them to release a software update to fix the Kernel
- which means that our best chance here is to hope it is fixed with an update, the root cause is the Kernel not being optimized
2. I am on the verge of snapping this phone in half as I asked around the community and received no answers , been trying to fix this for 1 year straight

Out of the blue: A factory reset could help.
You definitely have a problem that your phone does not idle (look at my screenshots (v ..128):
idle (Ruhezustand) should always be in the top three).
One of your messengers might the culprit.
Try to disable them all and switch them on one after another to find a possible culprit.
Hi,
I too have these issues. Did you manage to workout which app was at fault?
Yes, another case here. We are still investigating the problem and checking if it's some app or system itself. Most of battery was used by android system and battery was empty in 11 hours.
Problems started with 41.3.A.2.128.
So is it worth updating?

In our case problem was either facebook or whatsapp. Both remove/disabled and now battery lasts as always.
Yes, it is horrible!! I woke up at 7 am, took my phone off the charger and never made a call, or even turned on wifi. I came back from being outside around 11:30 and I was down to %34!! Without the phone having done nothing but sit there and recieve 2 missed calls and 5 text messages!! I usually get 2-3 days on a charge with my XZS depending what I am doing. Needs to be fixed and fast!!!!
Dont factory reset, because the battery issue will not go away for rom issues.
But the "Messages" app do look suspicious for 5%.
There are some devs like to tell people factory reset for everything first and even reset for regular stock rom updates.
Its a bit excessive, like formatting Windows for every time it crashes or even for every Windows updates... Unless you enjoy restoring data & apps.
Should try something to troubleshoot and fix it first before resetting, so we know whats wrong.
The battery drain on idle is slightly better after a week, but we still have to wait and see.
i have problems too, with last existenz with this version battery its a joke

Battery Drain on Android Pie?

Hi All--
I've been on the Android P Beta for a while.
However, starting with the final beta that was released (and now on the final version of pie) I've been experiencing really quick battery drain.
Tried a total wipe and restore, and the same thing. My wife (also the pixel) isn't having those issues at all.
Thoughts?
(nothing shows up in the battery section)
Yes, I had great battery life. Then once Android Pie was released, jumped on the beta to get 9 sooner. Then got the upgrade from beta to final and battery life is horrible. I did not factory reset, I have battery saver on and it doesn'tseem to matter. If I leave on standby, no issues. If I use the phone, it can bleed as much as 10% per hour! Unacceptable. I may try factory resetting, but idk...
have you allocated sufficient time for app battery optimization?
I also have a pixel, Android 9.0/Pie (bought it brand new three days ago) and think battery is draining very (!) quick.
Yesterday I had roughly 2.5 SOT (with battery saver enabled) and this seems consistent with what I can expect typically. I did factory reset and have tried restricting "background activity" for my frequent apps - seems to make no difference. Obviously it had not time to do full battery optimization yet I guess, but I doubt it would mean a that big difference?
Saw a thread where someone mentioned it seems CPU-freq is high/inc. very rapidly when just tapping the screen (GPU-0%), and I can agree with that although I have not the prev. experience of what to expect.
My previous experience is with Xiaomi mi6/mi5 (lineage 15.1), similar usage would give 2x or 3x SOT (however with some other hw-issues.. ).

Flashed factory image without -w/"wipe". Will that do or should it be "full" factory reset to make sense?
Thank you for your information, I will stay on Oreo.

I don't think it would make a difference. The user data is on a different partition.
You could try flashing the image again, without Magisk or any other additions.
I had used up 50% with only 21 minutes screen on time.
I noticed the app Device Health Services, was constantly active in the background.
I had the same like the OP: everything was fine until the last beta came, and battery is draining faster, phone gets hot from even the smallest usage even in the prod release of android pie.
I was thinking it has something to do with being about 36 degrees (summer time....), but it is the same even in cooler temperature rooms. It's like if the phone is constantly doing something in the background, but only if I use it.
It has been a few days since I upgraded my Pixel 2. Battery life is noticably worse, maybe 20-30% more battery drain in a day than what I saw in Oreo.
I notice the issue as well. I did factory reset after update it's been a week. I was on beta and started noticing battery issues in the first beta and throughout. I decided to install Accubattery to track my battery usage and ended up with a result.
My phone states the battery is in good condition but this app says otherwise. I guess it's time to change the battery along with cracked screen!
i'm curious if my battery is shot as well... Seems like after I purchased my used Pixel.. the battery is not as lasting as I hoped for the smaller pixel phone... I may try one of those battery testing apps to see if it will tell me its current health..
I normally welcome up updates, but this update screwed up my battery life so bad. I mean everything was perfect until the update. Now the battery drains so fast I can watch the percentage count down like a timer and now when the battery gets anywhere from 15-40% the phone will just shut down.
I would like to go back to oreo, but it's such a pain in the ass having to back everything up and flash a ROM considering I haven't done that since before I bought the pixel
I have the same problem. I hope Google can fix it.
Wow, that is not normal. Stock android 9 with root and elemental kernel.... I go back to android 8.1.0 and wait for feature releases
I think I found an Draining App/Setting
I disable the RCS Service on my Phone. It can be found under Messages >> 3 dot Menu >> Settings >> broadcast News. Disable it.
And then Bluetooth and WiFi scan disable.
Same here, crazy idle drain after pie, only 50% deep sleep, tried factory reset and no luck
Try BetterBatteryStats. People in that thread spend their free time analyzing logs to tell you what's eating up all your battery life.

OP6 Always Awake, Poor Battery Life

Hey guys,
I bought OP6 8/128 version and first, the battery life was ok, I was getting 4-5 hours of sot. Now, I see that battery is discharging in constant rate and something is keeping my phone awake all the time. Firstly I thought it was Instagram when it helped when I force stopped it. Now I'm lost 20 percent overnight and battery stats show, that all the time my device was awake. Cannot see anything suspicious through gsam or better battery stats as I believe the put it under android system. Help anyone?
Did you already do a reboot?

From personal experience, i found that updating OTA was the culprit. To get around this, download the full update from Oneplus and update that way.
Ever since i started doing this, I have not had the battery drain issues i used to have. Also, wipe cache before booting phone after update.

So I should try to do fresh install from OnePlus site? Awake time drops when I clear recent apps, so I believe this is either Instagram or Facebook doing this. Really weird. Even without awake time shown in graph, I got 35% drain in 1h sot and 11h standby, this shouldn't be normal, right?
It's crazy, because I used to have a good battery life

for testing, can you uninstall Instagram and Facebook for 1 day and see how your battery life changes.
I can tell you right now Instagram has a prefetch service which causes close to 1-2 hours of wakelock per day for me. I have root so I can disable it but there's no other way from the app itself.

You can just set the app to not use any background data from within Android. I have it on all that's not important for me.
Loose about 0.3% per hour without any apps or mods on beta 2.

So, the story continues... After following your advice and restricting background data for Instagram the wake up time fixed itself, however battery is still draining. Screenshots attached (facebook and time sensors used??)
I will test every available option and if they won't work, I would consider moving to beta oxygen os. Now I'm on 5.1.11
I am ready to trace this to it's roots for people who will potentially encounter this problem in the future.

It could be your spotty connection. Your awake time is fairly high when the mobile network connection goes south. Can you try using something like 3G instead and see if the awake time goes down? As well as the battery drain?
Naturally 3G uses less battery but if you see a drastic difference then it could be the tower connection you have. When the signal gets worse the modem tries harder and effectively uses more battery trying to stay connected.
Have a look if Facebook is allowed to use unlimited background data, I believe there is a setting for it on 5.1.11 aswell (I'm on beta, its a beast.)
There are many reasons not to install Facebook apps on your phone, and this is one of them.

Background data off both for Facebook and Instagram fixed (at least it seems) the overnight drain issue even with airplane mode on. Last time I lost 20-30%, tonight less than 4-5%
Just when I thought I found what was causing the drain, take a look at this: 20min sot and 20% down in 4.5h
Screens attached, still searching for the issue. Android battery stats show no awake time, but something is definitely draining (app usage insanely high on 80%)

So strange.. I feel we still have 3 options here.. 2 old and one new.
Flash 5.1.11 without wiping anything (you won't loose data so it's just an upgrade)
Flash beta 2 dirty as an upgrade, (you might get device corruptednat boot, press power 2 times and forget about the message) you won't loose any data or apps this way either.
Last option is the least fun, clean install of rom :/. If you ask me, I'd go for beta 2 option, if you wanna run something you know is stable go with 5.1.11.
I didn't run into any issues with beta 2 but some are (I believe user error here..)
Changed my mind.... I have 2 more posible fixes.. (I think)
Hmmm, one more thing I just came to think of is try using SD Maid, now this is just a guess that it will do anything at all..
The other thing is flashing a kernel, something could have happened there after an upgrade or something (just a guess.)
I'm running flash kernel now, it's really good

Thanks for your thoughts, thinking of going to beta 2 since I am on 5.1.11 right now. As for flashing kernel, I've been there with custom roms and kernels with several other phones and in the end most of them (except galaxy s5) were working better on stock ones after a while... However, doesn't rooting void the warranty on OP6?

Beta 2 is really good
48 hours and I'm at 18% with soon 9hrs of screen (usage and SS in battery thread)
As of warranty, no, you will still have full. However this shouldn't have to be done as a "fix" , i was just curious if stock kernel somehow got messed up :s

I would suggest doing a factory reset or uninstall your apps one at a time. Considering it's saying kernel wakelock (could be false positive) I would start go straight to factory reset. If going to Android Pie beta 2 is overall stable and forces a reset anyways, then go ahead and do that instead.
Im just getting 5-6hours SOT on my new op6, is this the normal battery life? Was planning on flashing custom kernels? Any suggestions?

So, I can close this case as SOLVED.
Today, phone was mainly on 4g, doing photos, videos, calls, 4 hours of spotify via bluetooth. 3h50min SOT, 16h standby and still 27% left. Dirty install of Beta 2 fixed it! Thanks for your help!

Where can I download beta 2?
I am on 5.1.11

Why did the August update destroy my battery life?

I'm not even kidding. Everything was perfect and I had absolutely no problems until they sent out that update. Now I can watch my battery percentage dropping by the second and my phone will shut off around 30%.
Once again, I had no problems until the August update. I never even rooted this phone, so the last thing I want to do is to figure that out to downgrade to the last version. I will if I have to though
If your phone spontaneously shuts down with the battery at 30%, then I see 2 possibilities:
It's overheating, or
The battery has reached end-of-life
Use an app to determine the remaining capacity of your battery (usually displayed in mAh). The results of such apps should be taken with a grain of salt, but if it says your battery is only at 60 or 70% of original capacity, then it's definitely not normal.

You could try to go to recovery, wipe cache and reboot. Or, if possible, wait for the next security update and see if it gets fixed if you have a spare phone to use. These are the only two opportunities without messing around or loosing data.
A downgrade always needs a full data wipe AFAIK. If you aren't afraid of data loss, you could try a full factory reset and see if the battery drain is gone.
I noticed the same on my Pixel - i don't use it a great deal and was seeing 6 days before it'd drop to 30 to 35% battery level, now i'm seeing 2.5 to 3 days - my usage has not changed
I really don't think it's battery nearing end of life - the phone & battery are just now hitting the 2 yr mark

I don't think it's end of life either. Like I said, everything was great until the update. My GF got the same phone around the same time and I told her not to update. So she's still running the last version and her phone is still perfect.
Is the battery life still abysmal when running in safe mode? if so, it may be a rogue 3rd party app.
my battery life was crap with the kernel and android system after i updated to August as well. I assumed it was a Magisk update or module that was the issue. Once I moved to Android Pie my battery life has returned.

I haven't tried safe mode - my battery was surprising decent under Android 8. the day it updated to Android 9 it went south in a handbasket. And i noticed "battery saver" selection is no longer available
i'm trying to read up and re-learn installing a custom rom, and which rom to choose - i last did a custom rom in 2010 and haven't been near the forums since then, but this issue and the more i learn about google's surveillance collection, i want to go custom
Since you're willing to install a custom ROM, why not try to reinstall the full stock ROM first?
appreciate the suggestion - that's what i originally wanted to do and posted here a few weeks back asking how to revert to android 8 and was told it couldn't be done but i could do a custom rom
and now, with the privacy issues i've been reading about, i think i'd prefer to limit my services as googles' "product". It kind of alarmed me how sensitive the phone's microphone was - i actually wrapped the phone in a heavy towel and left it 5 feet away, and said "OK google" in a normal voice - and bam, it was opened when i unwrapped the phone. There's no reason for the microphone to be that sensitive, imho
but i'm an old fart, and the younger generations don't seem to relish their privacy like i do - that's fine for them, no judgment on my part, i just like my privacy
