Hey guys, I'm having severe battery drain with my new Xperia XZ. The phone basically never goes into deep sleep and I have no idea what the cause could be. I'm on the latest firmware. These are the battery stats overnight when I wasn't using the phone.

There must be something wrong with the software, since I'm also experiencing twice the time of phone activity than screen-on time. I have contacted Sony Customer Service and they advised me to do factory reset and since I had no time to do it lately, I can not say if it worked. If you have spare time to backup and restore your data, you should go for it. Keep me informed of results

Sorry to hear that guys.... My xz is running with the last software update also, but the battery drain during night doesn't exceed 4-5%. Wifi always on, alarm and stuff....
I have done a factory reset and used the pc program to repair the software and still android os is taking many %

Factory reset doesnt changed anything
Every time you factory reset and/or flash something it takes a while for the android OS to rebuild caches etc.
Please see how this goes over a week and then see if there are any issues.
If you still have no deep sleep or wake locks then you will need to provide logs in order for anyone to have an idea what is causing it.

No issues with battery here. When I got my phone I reinstalled the OS right away through the Sony companion. Maybe try that. Will check what happens overnight since I got the phone just yesterday.
I didn't got an issue with CPU, but my XZ battery drain over night is about 4-5% (did check and close/disable all apps and connections ) and by day use is too high (may not last a full day with facebook checking & web surfing frequently, full at 7am to 20% at 7pm ). (I did use Z1 before, and that is quite terrible cuz Z1 did last longer when it was still new)
Hope nougat update fix that :'(.
I've had the phone for just about a week, so I'll give it some time and see if it settles, especially considering my brother's Xperia XZ doesn't suffer from the same issue. Thanks. Well at least the Nougat rollout has begun.

I did Factory reset with software repair (via Xperia Companion) and after reinstalling my apps and whole night charging I saw little improvement...
My 2nd thought is "Smart Cleaner". Since I have installed some really badly made apps like Facebook, Messeneger or Snapchat, my observation is that they don't like to have cache cleaned. So I have turned it off and magically my issue is gone. Deepsleep 95% of time.
IMHO every performance improving software feature must have some issue...
does the drain fixed with new N update?

Despite the battery size it does what was advertised.
No root,
Not unlocked
No custom ROM
All info is stock Android N from my XZ. I can get easy 4 hours SOT through the day.
I don't bother with stamina, it's not the same since before 6.0. Just cripples performance. Huawei have somehow managed to implement stamina style features into their 6.0 ROMs. If Sony manage to do the same I'll use it again.
But then, I've had over 3 hours screen on today and still have 57% left, more than happy with that given my cell reception is never over 2 bars here.

my battery life seems to vary, maybe wakelocks? I am not rooted so I can't check. Some days I get 7-8 hours sot, however today (a day at university with wifi connection) my battery life is terrible, mobile network standby and Android system seem to be battery hogs.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I wanted to post the same thing... I haven't even installed all my apps on the new phone,
and I get terrible battery drain especially in standby, it's losing 20% overnight.
Then I factory reset it and it seems a little better now, but it's too unstable...

There have been reports of other users on battery drain with certain themes installed. What theme are running and could you compare with the default theme?
same here, not found the cause yet but tempted to do a full reset and start from scratch.
For wakelocks non root, download wakelock detector lite, you just enable it via a chrome app and usb debug, will have to do it when you restart the phone but thats not so often now days.

In my house the reception is not very good, but that's why I set it to 2G and turn off mobile data, leave it only on Wifi.
Did not install any theme, default everything. But really, can a theme cause battery drain ?

The battery standby stability is not great is it?
I'm currently turning on "battery saver" when I am not using the phone - a slight pain, I know, but it does seem to have helped, a bit.
Will keep an eye on it and let you know (I am hoping to get away with charging the phone every two days rather than every day).
Will see if that proves possible - FWIW, for me, it seems that Ourlook and Bluemail are two key culprits. I have changed the settings on Bluemail from Push to Fetch every 15 mins, which has helped, but of course you cannot do this on Outlook. Well done Microsoft.
At this rate I'll end up using the "extreme" power saving mode
I know battery usage will never be consistent among different users, but the background drain is too much (based on what I see here and the other thread). If you can figure out your background drain you'll be sorted.
I know Dropbox had a bug that affected a lot of people recently, where it would keep the phone awake for hours at a time, they sorted it out in a BETA but not sure if its been pushed to stable yet.
I'd recommend everyone to download BetterBatteryStats, give it permissions via ADB and then use your phone normally until you reach 10% and see what is keeping the phone awake. My phone drains less than 1% an hour overnight (typically lose 4-5% over an 8-9 hour period.)
By the way, it is VERY common amongst the U11 and U11+ for mobile network standby to appear very high. It always does, even when I get 7-8 hours SOT, the mobile drain appears high. I think the battery stats are a bit bugged if I am honest. Sometimes it will say Spotify has been using battery in the background for 10 hours, yet it drains less than 1% and doesn't show up on battery historian. Other times it will say Nova is using 50% battery with 10 minutes screen usage (even though my phone has been running for 30+ hours). Doesn't always make sense.
My experience with battery drain is that I don't have any issues. As others have said, it will be different for different users depending on apps running in the background.
I have over 100 apps installed, some are running in the background, but I usually have 50% left most days. My battery drains really slowly. Couldn't be happier.

This is the problem I have with this HTC U11+ battery: if I don't reboot the phone after charging, kernel is always awakes
If you reboot your phone regularly you won't notice this.
I wonder if it is a common problem to U11+ and if HTC knows this.

Seems more like a software issue.
I would try seeing what apps maybe like to wake up when charged (anything that backs up only when charging etc) or do a factory reset.

I did factory reset, wipe cache, everything... Unfortunately there are many people with this problem since the last software update, so I think it's something HTC related that must be fixed.

I have the China version U11+. After I upgraded to 1.24 via OTA, battery draining has become a serious problem, even in airplane mode.
I have solved it after I noticed the problem by doing a factory reset.
I have the European U11+ and I'm experiencing very fast battery draining after the latest OTA update too.
With me it's Google Play services causing the problem even in airplane mode and with extreme power saving on

Disable background data and motion permission and if you are rooted install magisk module dose on google play service

I don't think it's play services' problem… Because the maximum battery consumption is caused by the EPS.
Maybe it's a bug made by HTC. They may change some files after the update, but forget to deal with the case of these files have been generated. So my problem was solved after factory resetting.
I use Google apps too, they don't cause battery draining if everything goes well.
I reached out to HTC as I noticed an absolutely huge decrease in battery life. I was asked to calibrate the battery and that seems to have stopped the issues at the moment. Email I received had the following instructions:
Recalibrate the battery/charging logic with the following steps:
•Charge the device for at least 10 minutes
•With the device truly OFF while still being plugged into the wall outlet, push in and hold volume up and volume down AND power button, for 2 minutes.
•Let go. Device will boot up, and battery/charging logic are re-calibrated.
I tried that and then reset it and I've been getting about a day since then. It's definitely linked to the last software update despite what they'll try and say.

I have to agree that something is happening with the software, and moreover, since last week the drain became really noticeable.
I was losing around 15% by night, so what I did to fix it was the following:
Clear cache of Sense Home
Disable the apps I was not using; for me those were:
Weather
HTC Account
Device configuration
Google Documents (didn't let me uninstall, but Sheets and Presentation let me)
Duo
Zoe Video Editor
Facebook
Facebook App Manager
HTC Alexa

I've ended up doing something similar- starting in safe mode I found that I wasn't getting the same drastic battery drain so I removed/disabled some apps, including HTC Weather and Touchpal, same as you. Now battery life seems much better and Google Play Services isn't causing a problem. I'm cautiously optimistic....:good:

I've been on the Android P Beta for a while.
However, starting with the final beta that was released (and now on the final version of pie) I've been experiencing really quick battery drain.
Tried a total wipe and restore, and the same thing. My wife (also the pixel) isn't having those issues at all.
Thoughts?

Yes, I had great battery life. Then once Android Pie was released, jumped on the beta to get 9 sooner. Then got the upgrade from beta to final and battery life is horrible. I did not factory reset, I have battery saver on and it doesn'tseem to matter. If I leave on standby, no issues. If I use the phone, it can bleed as much as 10% per hour! Unacceptable. I may try factory resetting, but idk...

Yesterday I had roughly 2.5 SOT (with battery saver enabled) and this seems consistent with what I can expect typically. I did factory reset and have tried restricting "background activity" for my frequent apps - seems to make no difference. Obviously it had not time to do full battery optimization yet I guess, but I doubt it would mean a that big difference?
Saw a thread where someone mentioned it seems CPU-freq is high/inc. very rapidly when just tapping the screen (GPU-0%), and I can agree with that although I have not the prev. experience of what to expect.
My previous experience is with Xiaomi mi6/mi5 (lineage 15.1), similar usage would give 2x or 3x SOT (however with some other hw-issues.. ).

I don't think it would make a difference. The user data is on a different partition.
You could try flashing the image again, without Magisk or any other additions.

I noticed the app Device Health Services, was constantly active in the background.
I had the same like the OP: everything was fine until the last beta came, and battery is draining faster, phone gets hot from even the smallest usage even in the prod release of android pie.
I was thinking it has something to do with being about 36 degrees (summer time....), but it is the same even in cooler temperature rooms. It's like if the phone is constantly doing something in the background, but only if I use it.
It has been a few days since I upgraded my Pixel 2. Battery life is noticably worse, maybe 20-30% more battery drain in a day than what I saw in Oreo.
I notice the issue as well. I did factory reset after update it's been a week. I was on beta and started noticing battery issues in the first beta and throughout. I decided to install Accubattery to track my battery usage and ended up with a result.
My phone states the battery is in good condition but this app says otherwise. I guess it's time to change the battery along with cracked screen!
i'm curious if my battery is shot as well... Seems like after I purchased my used Pixel.. the battery is not as lasting as I hoped for the smaller pixel phone... I may try one of those battery testing apps to see if it will tell me its current health..
I normally welcome up updates, but this update screwed up my battery life so bad. I mean everything was perfect until the update. Now the battery drains so fast I can watch the percentage count down like a timer and now when the battery gets anywhere from 15-40% the phone will just shut down.
I would like to go back to oreo, but it's such a pain in the ass having to back everything up and flash a ROM considering I haven't done that since before I bought the pixel

I think I found an Draining App/Setting
I disable the RCS Service on my Phone. It can be found under Messages >> 3 dot Menu >> Settings >> broadcast News. Disable it.
And then Bluetooth and WiFi scan disable.

Try BetterBatteryStats. People in that thread spend their free time analyzing logs to tell you what's eating up all your battery life.

I bought OP6 8/128 version and first, the battery life was ok, I was getting 4-5 hours of sot. Now, I see that battery is discharging in constant rate and something is keeping my phone awake all the time. Firstly I thought it was Instagram when it helped when I force stopped it. Now I'm lost 20 percent overnight and battery stats show, that all the time my device was awake. Cannot see anything suspicious through gsam or better battery stats as I believe the put it under android system. Help anyone?

From personal experience, i found that updating OTA was the culprit. To get around this, download the full update from Oneplus and update that way.
Ever since i started doing this, I have not had the battery drain issues i used to have. Also, wipe cache before booting phone after update.

So I should try to do fresh install from OnePlus site? Awake time drops when I clear recent apps, so I believe this is either Instagram or Facebook doing this. Really weird. Even without awake time shown in graph, I got 35% drain in 1h sot and 11h standby, this shouldn't be normal, right?

for testing, can you uninstall Instagram and Facebook for 1 day and see how your battery life changes.
I can tell you right now Instagram has a prefetch service which causes close to 1-2 hours of wakelock per day for me. I have root so I can disable it but there's no other way from the app itself.

You can just set the app to not use any background data from within Android. I have it on all that's not important for me.
Loose about 0.3% per hour without any apps or mods on beta 2.

So, the story continues... After following your advice and restricting background data for Instagram the wake up time fixed itself, however battery is still draining. Screenshots attached (facebook and time sensors used??)
I will test every available option and if they won't work, I would consider moving to beta oxygen os. Now I'm on 5.1.11
I am ready to trace this to it's roots for people who will potentially encounter this problem in the future.

It could be your spotty connection. Your awake time is fairly high when the mobile network connection goes south. Can you try using something like 3G instead and see if the awake time goes down? As well as the battery drain?
Naturally 3G uses less battery but if you see a drastic difference then it could be the tower connection you have. When the signal gets worse the modem tries harder and effectively uses more battery trying to stay connected.
Have a look if Facebook is allowed to use unlimited background data, I believe there is a setting for it on 5.1.11 aswell (I'm on beta,its a beast.)
There are many reasons not to install Facebook apps on your phone, and this is one of them.

Background data off both for Facebook and Instagram fixed (at least it seems) the overnight drain issue even with airplane mode on. Last time I lost 20-30%, tonight less than 4-5%
Just when I thought I found what was causing the drain, take a look at this: 20min sot and 20% down in 4.5h
Screens attached, still searching for the issue. Android battery stats show no awake time, but something is definitely draining (app usage insanely high on 80%)

So strange.. I feel we still have 3 options here.. 2 old and one new.
Flash 5.1.11 without wiping anything (you won't loose data so it's just an upgrade)
Flash beta 2 dirty as an upgrade, (you might get device corruptednat boot, press power 2 times and forget about the message) you won't loose any data or apps this way either.
Last option is the least fun, clean install of rom :/. If you ask me, I'd go for beta 2 option, if you wanna run something you know is stable go with 5.1.11.

As for flashing kernel, I've been there with custom roms and kernels with several other phones and in the end most of them (except galaxy s5) were working better on stock ones after a while... However, doesn't rooting void the warranty on OP6?

Beta 2 is really good
48 hours and I'm at 18% with soon 9hrs of screen (usage and SS in battery thread)

I would suggest doing a factory reset or uninstall your apps one at a time. Considering it's saying kernel wakelock (could be false positive) I would start go straight to factory reset. If going to Android Pie beta 2 is overall stable and forces a reset anyways, then go ahead and do that instead.
Im just getting 5-6hours SOT on my new op6, is this the normal battery life? Was planning on flashing custom kernels? Any suggestions?

So, I can close this case as SOLVED.
Today, phone was mainly on 4g, doing photos, videos, calls, 4 hours of spotify via bluetooth. 3h50min SOT, 16h standby and still 27% left. Dirty install of Beta 2 fixed it! Thanks for your help!

Where can I download beta 2?

In last few days I noticed battery drain. And as well I think it started same time I noticed screen flickering when in battery settings. Video explaining attached. As you can see its fine until I get deeper into settings then "system operacyjny Android" starts flashing slightly and screen flickers and it's laggy. It stops and then starts again Anyone else has similar problem?
XDA allows 200+MB attachments?
It'd be easier to describe (in English?) the settings path you took.
I was surprised too sorry it's in battery settings and that's what's flashing "android os"

Hi mate, I do have the same problem with the battery settings view. But no solution so far.
Looks like a small glitch then. What app can you suggest to have a proper look into battery usage? Like idle etc with details. Something is draining my battery. I have accu battery now but I don't see any details there

I've rooted all android phone since I bought my pixel 7 pro a few days ago. Don't want to root again because of magisk hide etc. But there a a few things, like the battery section or the missing nfc quick tile, that makes me to want to flash a custom Rom. But so far I stay strong and keep the stock Rom.

Perhaps a full device wipe is needed.
If I continually update and re-root my phone each month without the "wipe' parameter, I eventually run into some not-super-noticeable OS issues. But, of course, once that occurs I just make a Google Drive backup and re-image my phone with the same factory image. However, I just leave the wipe parameter in the flash-all batch file when I do this and any OS or root problems seem to be resolved after doing so.

You don't need to re-root with every release. Just use Pixel Flasher.

If I remember correctly, Pixel Flasher is re-rooting after full system images are flashed. Or perhaps it updates over the OTA method? Regardless, I have never used it as I have never needed to, haha =P. Re-rooting only takes me a a few seconds =)

So, it is re-rooting after the updated system image is flashed, haha =D.
Just for clarification, rooting a Pixel is done in the act of patching the stock init_boot.img and then flashing it. When the system is updated, the entire factory image is flashed, and thus, the previously patched init_boot.img is replaced with a stock, unpatched init_boot.img. At this point in time, the phone is no longer rooted. But that is why users like us re-root our phones afterwards =). The Pixel Flasher is just incorporating that re-rooting process into its convenient, ease-of-use application experience - which is a very good thing to provide an option for.

Nope, it patches and flashes the image automatically itself.
battery drain on a smartphone can be caused by various factors, including:

The thing is that that drain started on Friday I think. Didn't install any new apps etc. I have around 30% phone iddle - is that normal?

Ehhh when idle apps are still running in the background checking for stuff etc... It'd be better if you used some other battery analyzer like GSAM for more details.
Ok so looks it's back to previous battery performance after yesterday's update. Definitely flickering problem is fixed and that's my today's battery result. And the phone idle seems gone down from 25-30 to 15%

Since then my battery drains a lot faster then before. I have a loss of 30% during a night without doing anything within these 7 hours. Before the update it had around 6-8% less in the morning. And it drains a lot fast during the day too. I have 100% after charge in the morning, go to work and when I come back it is down to ~30%. Last week it was on ~60% or more when I came home.
No new apps, nothing changed except the update.
This is really annoying me!
Don't want to wipe the hole phone as I don't use any Cloud on my ohones and would have to backup via MyPhoneExplorer and set up all by hand again.
Or is there any backup solution to backup everything on a phone all at once without root?

I've been through this. For no reason, it's an insane battery drain. I ended up wiping and reflashing the newest firmware, staying on Stock Kernel and restoring my Swift backup - user apps/data only - and only logged into the apps I actually use and it got better. Not perfect, but better. After I week I reflashed the Kira Kernel and it's been back to pretty stellar again, like you said, only dropping a few percentage points at night
