Android OS battery drain, no deep sleep. - Sony Xperia XZ Questions & Answers

Hey guys, I'm having severe battery drain with my new Xperia XZ. The phone basically never goes into deep sleep and I have no idea what the cause could be. I'm on the latest firmware. These are the battery stats overnight when I wasn't using the phone.

I have the same problem with my xz
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

There must be something wrong with the software, since I'm also experiencing twice the time of phone activity than screen-on time. I have contacted Sony Customer Service and they advised me to do factory reset and since I had no time to do it lately, I can not say if it worked. If you have spare time to backup and restore your data, you should go for it. Keep me informed of results

Not here
Sorry to hear that guys.... My xz is running with the last software update also, but the battery drain during night doesn't exceed 4-5%. Wifi always on, alarm and stuff....

I have done a factory reset and used the pc program to repair the software and still android os is taking many %

Factory reset doesnt changed anything

Every time you factory reset and/or flash something it takes a while for the android OS to rebuild caches etc.
Please see how this goes over a week and then see if there are any issues.
If you still have no deep sleep or wake locks then you will need to provide logs in order for anyone to have an idea what is causing it.

Now my android os is down to 10% so i think is going back to normal again

No issues with battery here. When I got my phone I reinstalled the OS right away through the Sony companion. Maybe try that. Will check what happens overnight since I got the phone just yesterday.

I didn't got an issue with CPU, but my XZ battery drain over night is about 4-5% (did check and close/disable all apps and connections ) and by day use is too high (may not last a full day with facebook checking & web surfing frequently, full at 7am to 20% at 7pm ). (I did use Z1 before, and that is quite terrible cuz Z1 did last longer when it was still new)
Hope nougat update fix that :'(.

I've had the phone for just about a week, so I'll give it some time and see if it settles, especially considering my brother's Xperia XZ doesn't suffer from the same issue. Thanks. Well at least the Nougat rollout has begun.

Update:
I did Factory reset with software repair (via Xperia Companion) and after reinstalling my apps and whole night charging I saw little improvement...
My 2nd thought is "Smart Cleaner". Since I have installed some really badly made apps like Facebook, Messeneger or Snapchat, my observation is that they don't like to have cache cleaned. So I have turned it off and magically my issue is gone. Deepsleep 95% of time.
IMHO every performance improving software feature must have some issue...

does the drain fixed with new N update?
im still using MM and suffering from this prob badly

2h SOT
Happy D6633 user

I do hope Nougat fixes it. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Very poorly holds the battery in this phone. I am almost collapsed!
Happy Xperia XZ & Z3Dual user

Despite the battery size it does what was advertised.
No root,
Not unlocked
No custom ROM
All info is stock Android N from my XZ. I can get easy 4 hours SOT through the day.

I don't bother with stamina, it's not the same since before 6.0. Just cripples performance. Huawei have somehow managed to implement stamina style features into their 6.0 ROMs. If Sony manage to do the same I'll use it again.
But then, I've had over 3 hours screen on today and still have 57% left, more than happy with that given my cell reception is never over 2 bars here.

I seem to have phone idle and Android system as my main culprit. Running android nougat. Any fixes yet? Phone doesn't seem to want to enter deep sleep

[Q] Battery life issue!!

I understand that many people have battery problem with nexus 5 due to the camera app running in the background with skype or other apps that uses the camera. I dont use any of these apps and recently i am barely getting 2.5hrs screen on time(SOT) where just before a couple of weeks i was getting almost 4.5-5 hrs SOT. its a huge drop. I assumed it was a rouge app that i must have downloaded that is using up the battery so i factory reset my phone and have only reinstalled several apps such as facebook and whatsapp and several others but even today i only got 2hrs and 30 mins of SOT.
The battery setting shows the android system and the screen using most of the battery. Is anyone else facing similar issue? or if you can suggest me what I can do to fix it, I will be very thankful.
ps. i am running stock rom with stock kernel (not rooted)
thanks in advance
Normally I'd suggest installing BetterBatteryStats and see what is keeping your device awake, but it could be your sync settings/frequency, radio signal strength, and etc that are the culprit.
Factory reset again and install only updates for stock apps. Leave all other 3rd party app off your phone for 24hours. Use the phone as a phone, rather than a social and gaming platform for that amount of time.
See if you get better life at that point. If so, then it's at least one or multiple apps that you need to monitor closely. Best way is to get your baseline as I suggested, and then install apps one-by-one to find the issue.

If using the device stock with only stock apps doesn't increase your battery life the problem could be hardware related too.
The first N5 which I ordered the day it launched had the battery life fall to almost half
I tried everything I could think of, flash stock, factory reset, dim brightness, disable everything, only use 3G nothing worked.
then the earpiece started to go, called google for a RMA and the new device works perfectly
with the same apps installed I'm now getting 4 - 4 1/2 hours of SOT when I was lucky to get 3 before, usually 2 1/2
Seems battery had a hardware issue as well, I had been chalking it up to software battery drain issues, but it was definately hardware in my case.
Without screen shots from gsam or something, anything but the stock battery usage section in settings.....we're all just guessing here.

Faulty Battery sells often do get into the production line and its very common as OP has no pics we cant determine weather is software or hardware related
If anything send it to Google for RMA or LG for a replacement battery

Same problem i had in the past with Nexus 5 . We cant say that it is a hardware or a software related.MIGHT BE OR MAY NOT BE.
Its better to factory reset again and install all apps one by one to find out the actual reason only updates for stock apps leave all other apps for the time being.Turn off your Bluetooth and use your phone as a phone only, for a while.

Battery problem

Hey guys I'm not new here but I have a serious problem here my battery only lasts abt 3 hrs.
My phone gets extremely hot and not holdable and I'm afraid the backplate will get lose (glue) it happens since I updated to lollipop.
Stamina doesn't work at all out does not help.
If I use screen mirroring and charge it discharges or if I play a game tomb raider 1 Google playstore it also gets damn hot more than mentioned above.
I noticed android os drains battery and is on the list abt 5% it sucks my battery.
How can I get rid of this?
I tried Flashing several ftf and doesn't help after all I repair my phone with pc companion and still persist :/ my phone is around 4 months old.
So you still have warranty? If you have backed up your TA partition you can restore it, relock bootloader and take it to repair under warranty.
What brightness options are you using right now? (% and whether adaptive or not)
If I set brightness to the max and non-adaptive brightness, I get around 3h of screen-on-time on my Z3 as well.

5 times repaired from the shop or repairing the software through sony pc companion? If you haven't done so repair it with the pc companion. If the problem still persist flash another regions ftf file.
And are you sure you're not running any apps that is causing the battery to drain? Mind posting a screen shot next time?
5 times repaired in shop and yes I already flashed lot of ftf's and doesn't change anything and I'm using same apps I used b4 with kk, with kitkat I got 5-6 hrs SOT now only 3, I'm very sure it's not causing any app
Then install BBS (better battery stats, available in Google play and here on XDA) and monitor what's eating your battery.
Low battery life for users who have updated to Lollipop is a known issue and is affecting a variety of users on many different devices. I too have drastically decreased battery life since updating to Android 5.0.2.
What I did that made a HUGE difference:
Go to Settings / WiFi / tap three dots in upper right corner (menu) / Advanced / Keep WiFi on during sleep set to = NEVER or ONLY WHEN PLUGGED IN.
It looks like with the Lollipop update the stock Android settings take precedence over what is set in Stamina Mode. (I believe this was the other way around in Kitkat but do correct me if I'm wrong)
Last night I installed BBS and I'll keep watch closely and update here when I have more info.
Mine has slightly decreased since lollipop but I've never bothered because the battery is still great.
What exactly does better battery stats do? I installed it once but never really understood it

Battery life greatly getting worse

Has anyone noticed their battery getting incredibly worse over time? I bought my S7 on release (non edge). And since then, I've noticed that it doesn't last no where near as long. Today, for example I started my day at 7:00am when the battery was 100%. As of 30 minutes ago, the battery reached critically low (5%). From 7am all I did was watch a few videos, facebook, snapchat and then play music. But all the above for not too long.
I've also noticed that once the phone hits the 15% battery (I know due to the notification), that within minutes the battery can be done to 10% or so, without touching it.
I'm more so tempted just to take it back, unless there's an easy fix OR it's a known issue with the current version.
Thanks!

I've definitely noticed this since rooting. Maybe it has something to do with that? Like a ROM you flashed or what not? I'd like some suggestions here as well.

What does the battery stats say is using the most mAh?
Facebook app is a known battery hog
Obviously over time, you'll install different things, and slowly the phone will start using more and more power running background apps
A backup and Factory reset will show if there is a hardware / battery issue, or if it's purely from stuff you've installed over time
Also clearing the caches from recovery could help
yeah ive noticed this too. My usage habits havent changed but my battery life is almost half of what it was when i just got the phone.

Cache has been cleared from recovery, and I don't generally install many apps so since I've bought the phone the apps have stayed the same.
Android system is always on top. Unless of course I spend hours on Facebook.
Might have to factory reset. I've used my phone with the same apps and time since I've bought it, and I'm finding I'm charging it 3x as much.
I think it's a root issue - deep sleep.
After S6 Edge Plus, when you root a samsung phone, it won't go in deep sleep. I believe there's a fix for that.
Have you checked the battery usage stats? It gives you the breakdown on what apps are eating up the battery.
I have had my S7 for about a month and battery is about the same.
Just to update this thread for those that may have a similar issue...the other day I couldn't live with the battery life the way it was. The phone used 50% in several hours where I barely used it.
Decided to completely re-flash with stock (was stock before) as opposed to simply wiping all data. A week in, and the phone's battery life is back to the way it was. I went to bed when it was on 100% (as a test) and woke up 7 hours later with the phone on 94%, with wifi, location and bluetooth on.
Not sure what had caused it to use so much battery previously, but it's back to what it should be and that's all that matters.
hi with my s7 exynos i do 3h screen. i think there is a problem. i bought my s7 one week ago. can anyone help me?
Rooting and installing custom kernels when done right should greatly increase the battery life of your device. This is a well known guide here on XDA for improving battery life for our devices.
That being said, Lithium Ion Batteries hold less charge the more cycles they are put through, its a given fact but as you said your device is relatively new and therefore should not be experiencing this kind of problem. The way I see this is there are 3 possibilities which may be causing the said problem...
1) You have rooted the device and done some modification/s. ( which you haven't done )
2) Your battery is being drained by a service ( Like Oculus or VR ) in fact a number of reddit users complained their S7 was overheating and battery was draining really fast for some reason. Check This page out, It might help you.
3) Battery Defect, you must've gotten a "bad" model, if you haven't tripped KNOX you could try bringing your phone to Samsung and see if they would fix or replace it.
Good luck
I think this has to due to them samsung updates. As far as i know samsung been always doing things like this where they made the OS slow as hell after a while so you gonna get a upgrade sooner but a battery should last 2 years minimal without degrading.

i get like 5 hours screen on time and bout 1 day standby time but i have most bloatware disabled with the package disabler. But if i was you i would contact samsung.
This happens with Samsung updates on every Galaxy phone. It's like a curse. It's unavoidable.

May i ask if the people with these problems use the fast charge? I hearing many bad things bout this so i switched it off and must say the normal charge isn't that slow and if it can keep the battery good for longer then we all should use this.
I turned fast charge off about a week after I got the phone, was making the phone and charger pretty hot for the sake of about 5-10 mins quicker charge
Pointless really, unless you are desperate, only have a few mins spare and need as much power as possible in that short time, and if that's the case, enable it for that one time
Restrict background data on all but the most important apps (phone, text, email), dave power all but the most important apps. Battery life is fine

Phone idle using a lot of battery?

Sorry if the question has been answered before but does anyone else get a lot of battery drain due to 'phone idle'. I'm unsure whether if deep sleep not working or what but have never had this problem with any other phones I have had.

Yes, I'm definitely experiencing the same problem. I left the phone overnight and it lost almost 7% which is a lot compared to my old Z1 (only 1-2%). Other time is also similar. Sometimes, it feels like it as if actively using the phone actually uses less power than leaving it idle. Looking at the battery chart seems normal but the phone actually discharges fast on standby (sometimes I lost 25% after just 4-5 hours standby) I'm really want to know if others experience this as well and how to fix.
Yes I'm having the same problem.. Phone idle taking more drain than screen right now..
It's deffo a bug with this 7.0 update.. Hopefully it gets fixed in next update..
My battery sucks now after the Nougat update! Drains really quickly on standby. I even turned WiFi scanning off but it didn't seem to help
I am facing the same issue too
Phone idle appears at the top of the list, claiming 135 mah
While my screen states its using 49 mah
Similarly and annoyingly. Since Nougat my phone barely deep sleeps.
My phone was deep sleeping amazingly on mm. But now it barely deep sleeps. Ridiculous update which now requires me to perform a clean full wipe install of Nougat. Which currently I have no time for, hence my battery dies ridiculously fast. Annoying and not what I was expecting, this removed my excitement away from receiving the new Nougat update and instead am left with work to do to get this one back to par.
This has happened to me before on previous Sony phones when installing new ota updates. Clearly something Sony is good at.
For the OP - this is one of the best apps to determine CPU behaviour, simple and to the point. Particularly scroll to the bottom to obtain how well or not the phone deep sleeps.

Since upgrading via OTA to Nougat my device barely deep sleeps, rather it sits at 307mhz when idle. Battery gone to sh!t. Forced to do a factory reset fresh installation (when I get enough time to.)

Clean install, locked and unrooted, DRM in tact?
Still unfavourable deep sleep?
Then that surely is pointing to a inherent issue with Sony Nougat.
However why isn't everyone here with XZ Nougat complaining the same?
We need more input.
In the meantime I will need to bite the bullet and reset my phone as well and report back.

I got the same problem with you too, 7% after night, my old phone was Z1 to compare too. After update to 7.0 then back to 6.0.1 battery drain is less, but still more than normal.
I also Started to get huge Phone Idol drain (top of battery usage) after OTA update to Android 7 on Stock unrooted, Ive done a complete fresh start through xperia companion and still getting big drain from Phone Idol.
Got the same problems you guys are facing.
My phone did drain from 100% to 88% in just 2 hours (Display on: 35 minutes half brightness, phone calls 10 minutes) and its on WiFi not even mobile data. My girlfriends phone did drain about the same with 35 mins display on BUT calls of 45 minutes.
Oh and idle yeah on WiFi about 1% every hour and on Mobile Data 3%/hour.
This is really bad imho and it's been 2 times I've repaired the device via Xperia Companion. Funny about this is, that always on the first run I get a message "Firmware could not be repaired". Then I restart the whole process and it does just fine. Same with restoring images/videos.
I've started to notice my phone idle is near the top of battery usage. Initially after installing Nougat, battery life was great. Now I narrowly get 5hours of SOT. Currently at 70% and phone idle has used 19% of battery at 196mAh and SOT 1.5hrs with 182mAh. Not sure why the phone is not sleeping.

I upgrade to 7.0 again recently, and it only cost 1% per night, it's quite good . But battery consume while using is not much improvement like idle.
Facing the same problem, though i dont think its actually draining in my case, the phone deep sleeps fine but the drain with screen on is just appaling, since I got it I only got 4 hrs Max SoT thats with MM and N. It just seems that the battery generally sucks.
As of now, i have 84%: sot 23% 48 min - phone idle 20% (time on 4 h 35 min). By this it means i'll get about 3.5 hrs SoT which is normal in my case (though not good in my opinion)
I've just updated to the lastest .374 from .327. From what I experienced, the standby battery life have improved. I left it overnight and it only lost 2% (unlike 7% like before) which is probably ok for now.
Do you want to say.....that leaving the phone all the night....it lose 2% only???? I can't belive....normally it goes down by step of 2/3% for hours....so in 7/8 night you have to lose at least a 20%....minimum....
Well my battery result probably need more testing but it has never lost up to 20% per night. It would be outrageous if that happens. Are you sure there isn't anything that continuously running in the background of your phone? You could try a factory reset? Usually losing that much of battery per hour is only when the phone is actively being used, I think.

XZ 41.3.A.2.128 excessive battery drain

Anyone experiencing excessive battery drain with the May patch update? Android system drains the battery too much. I just reset my phone 2 days ago, installed my usual apps, updated the system and then this happens now. Any fix on this?
Hello,
It's actually a well known problem in the community
1. I have submitted a report to Sony and request them to release a software update to fix the Kernel
- which means that our best chance here is to hope it is fixed with an update, the root cause is the Kernel not being optimized
2. I am on the verge of snapping this phone in half as I asked around the community and received no answers , been trying to fix this for 1 year straight

Out of the blue: A factory reset could help.
You definitely have a problem that your phone does not idle (look at my screenshots (v ..128):
idle (Ruhezustand) should always be in the top three).
One of your messengers might the culprit.
Try to disable them all and switch them on one after another to find a possible culprit.
Hi,
I too have these issues. Did you manage to workout which app was at fault?
Yes, another case here. We are still investigating the problem and checking if it's some app or system itself. Most of battery was used by android system and battery was empty in 11 hours.
Problems started with 41.3.A.2.128.
So is it worth updating?

In our case problem was either facebook or whatsapp. Both remove/disabled and now battery lasts as always.
Yes, it is horrible!! I woke up at 7 am, took my phone off the charger and never made a call, or even turned on wifi. I came back from being outside around 11:30 and I was down to %34!! Without the phone having done nothing but sit there and recieve 2 missed calls and 5 text messages!! I usually get 2-3 days on a charge with my XZS depending what I am doing. Needs to be fixed and fast!!!!
Dont factory reset, because the battery issue will not go away for rom issues.
But the "Messages" app do look suspicious for 5%.
There are some devs like to tell people factory reset for everything first and even reset for regular stock rom updates.
Its a bit excessive, like formatting Windows for every time it crashes or even for every Windows updates... Unless you enjoy restoring data & apps.
Should try something to troubleshoot and fix it first before resetting, so we know whats wrong.
The battery drain on idle is slightly better after a week, but we still have to wait and see.
i have problems too, with last existenz with this version battery its a joke
