i have a son... i have a mdm on this phone now however all he has to do is power down the phone theres got to be a way plz help.... btw its a usa variant so boot-loader inst unlock-able

It's a matter of trust and actions having consequences. If he reboots* it he has to inform you immediately. If he doesn't or even if he does, penalties.
Days, weeks, whatever he gets only a stupid phone for a companion. Software can't replace leadership. He'll get the idea...
*I don't accidentally reboot my phone and it can easily run for a week like that.

[Q] Nexus S goes into some sort of fault state

My two months old Nexus S started to behave in a way that renders it pretty much useless - Freezing / Locked U
Freeze/Delay Between Menu and basically the phone is dead.
Very often when the screen is off, pressing power button powers up the screen with the screen lock, but the phone is not responsive so the screen just goes off again as it is impossible to slide to unlock it.
On top of that, leaving the phone with the screen off for a half an hour or so brings up some sort of warning sign and a small android (can see the screen shot here: http://yfrog.com/h3apmgqj) and the phone is effectively dead. The only thing to do in any of the two cases is remove and reinsert the battery, but that is no solution to anything. All this is while the battery is fully charged.
Did anyone experienced this before? resetting phone does not help.

Hi, no I do not - the image is actually from different phone but it looks exactly as it did on my Nexus S (little green guy with an exclamation mark). I never rooted my phone or done any custom mods to its system.
I actually sent it to Samsung and they are claiming that they found no problem, so they re-flushed the phone and are sending it back. I am seriously angry at samsung. It is arriving on the 11th so I'll let you know if that helped but I doubt it.
I believe this might be a faulty memory because I often received notification that the internal storage was unavailable or something of that nature as well, right before the problem would occur. Are the any tests I could perform for memory / storage?
just try to flash it back to stock
then do wipe data and wipe cache
see if that gets it back on its feet

I just received my phone from Samsung repair and of course, the phone is NOT fixed. On the side note, they also sent back my note that explains the problem meaning it was ignored completely.
I will be contacting @SamsungServic and calling but at this point I am not sure that they can fix the phone other then replace it.
Also,
I've spoken to Samsung and chat online and - yes they nice and throw back lots of promises and niceness back but they are NOT doing anything about it, for now at least.

I've been keeping a notebook to document my debugging of this problem. No app in particular is responsible, in my opinion. I have observed the phone lock up after a Factory Data Reset + USB wipe, and with no accounts configured. In fact, I have had it freeze after following this procedure:
1. Factory Data Reset + USB erase from Settings menu
2. Phone reboots.
3. Go through initial setup screens, skip account setup.
4. Power down phone.
5. Remove battery.
6. Remove SIM card.
7. Replace battery.
8. Power up phone.
9. Let phone sit for 15 minutes or more.
10. Phone freezes.
This is about as close to bare bones as I can get with this device.
I have also documented at least four freeze modes:
1. Phone is completely dark (both display and buttons). No combination of power button or other buttons can bring phone back. Battery removal required.
2. Phone display is dark, but the four "hard key" buttons are illuminated. No combination of power button or other buttons can bring phone back. Battery removal required.
3. Phone displays only a green android by a warning exclamation sign. Holding power button down, then volume up, then release volume up, will bring up the Android system recovery screen, from which phone can be rebooted.
4. Phone is frozen at the unlock screen. Sometimes this freeze occurs while swiping the unlock icon. No combination of power button or other buttons can bring phone back. Battery removal required.
I have observed the phone going from normal standby state (display and buttons dark) to state 2, and at other times to state 3, while it was sitting on my desk by the keyboard.
I'm just about ready to send it to Samsung. I just wanted to verify that the problem would be reproducible after a factory reset and without the SIM card.
I think it may be a hardware problem. It's also possible that part of the Android kernel or some device driver on my device has become corrupt. Unfortunately I can't reset the OS.

I did a factory reset from the stock recovery, too. Doesn't help either.
My phone arrived on Friday Samsung mobile repair in Texas. And like they did to ohter Nexus S devices from other users they will do the following to mine:
Reflashing the phone -> doing some functional tests ...
... and this is the crazy thing about it. The error we have is just appearing when the phone is in standby and because of this the phone passes the functional tests Samsung is doing at the end of the service. Phone goes back to user. A defective phone.
Some guy managed to keep the phone alive by setting the display turning off after 30mins. He is charging it twice a day

An evaluation is already being conducted to determine the fix. We don't have a timeframe of the resolution.

The support team is friendly and to me it feels like they try to do anything they could.
Funny: One guy got a replacement device. But then no one other. Just reflash...
I think they will do something but on the other hand I'm worried that they will do nothing. But time will tell....
Maybe it would help us if Google will be aware of the problem, too. Ok maybe they allready know it, but I don't know that.
So if some of you here do have some connections... please do us a favor and forward this topic or the link to the google support topic. Feel free to forward this topic to any website you think it would write a news about it. Maybe Google will throw a eye on it. My phone is 8 weeks old and yeah this so anoying. And of course all my friends who are iHippster are trolling me like hell.
It don't want to flame or blame Samsung\Google for this.But our phones are in warranty. The error hits only a few devices and so they should replace it. My 50cent about it... this is not a Google expierence they talked about...
I also had the same problem and sent my phone into Samsung. They only re flashed it, which didn't fix the problem. I immediately called Samsung to inform them that the issue was not fixed and they just told me to send it back for "double checking." Do you think it is better to send it back in or just wait for fix to emerge?
I will be sending it back and demand replacing the phone, also making sure they just don't re-flash again. I guess anything but re-flashing could work.
Remember that I've mailed my phone with one page letter explaining the problem. Their response was flashing the phone and sending it back - with my letter.

Yeah i wrote a letter too explaining the issue and how to recreate it (the first time). They told me that it passed their quality assurance inspection after re-flashing it, which must be very poor because my phone shut off again 15 minutes after receiving it. Just dropped it back off at UPS today. Can they replace the phone because of this issue? I know one person had success, but it doesn't seem anyone else has.

Samsung may not be able to reproduce it after reflashing; as this issue does not seem to occur when connected to a PC/computer via USB. Their automated testing could be over USB.
Looks like more and more people are facing this issue as the day goes by.

I figured that was why they couldn't recreate the shutdown. Made sure they knew that it has to be unplugged. Mine always shuts off within 10-15 minutes if untouched.
I have same problem.Only remove battery helps. I have been having nexus s for 2 and half months and this problem just came last week. I don't know how to solve it. I tried reflash firmware but didn't help.
welcome to the club. you have to send it to USA to get it serviced (make a extreme detailed problem description and make sure the support worker writes it down 1:1 into their ticket system). they provide a 2day ups shippment label, BUT only to locations in USA.
I can recommend FedEx. They helped me a lot with this duty stuff for shipping to USA. That's not so easy . I paid €50 to get it shipped to a friend of mine in USA.
You have to send only the foreparts of the device. No battery and back panel, no charger and so on. But they will give you all informations at the end of the service request.
or: wait for a hotfix. which maybe never will come.

I just mailed my phone again... they told me they do not replace phones (not sure what that means yet). The Rep was arguing that if I want the phone replaced then I need to talk to T-Mobile - it does not make any sense.
Anyway, I explained the problem as much as I could and did not mail any notes this time as they obviously do not care for it. But I made sure he included every detail in his notes.
I am very skeptical but still hoping....

About the part when the phone does not freeze when plugged in or charging. I had my Nexus S charging overnight and it was frozen in the morning.

Also, I've contacted @SamsungServic via Twitter and asked if their team recognized it as a problem, but I've got no response.
On the other hand if you report the problem to them, they will respond that they will look into it - which means nothing, but if enough people asks the same question them they will have to.

[Q] HTC Surround Frozen?

Okay, googled, and bing'd the crap out of this and it looks like so far everyone who's had this issue has had to send their phones in for repair, but before doing that I thought I'd ask here aswell to see if anyone has been able to solve this problem.
I've had my HTC Surround for about a month now and this morning when I went to use it I noticed I couldn't read my emails, it said something like "Oops we were not able to retrieve your email." I thought no problem I'll just restart my phone. I turned it off, and turned it back on. Ever since then the phone has been stuck on the white HTC start screen. I've pulled the battery four times and tried restarting it. I've restarted it holding the volume up and down buttons and I get a bootloader screen (no option to hard reset). I can plug it into my computer on the bootloader screen and the computer recognizes the device as an HTC SD card. (This is nice to know seeing as I can, if I ever get the phone working again, load files on the phone's SD card that Zune won't let me) however this is bad because Zune will not recognize the phone.
Sooo, anyone else had this problem and been able to fix it themselves? I don't want to have to send it to HTC because I have no warranty. I bought the phone used. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
And this is running 7004, I have no unlocked the phone or tampered with it in any way. (yet)
Have you looked in the development forum for your stock ROM and tried flashing it from the bootloader?
I couldn't find a rom to flash. Maybe I will just use this as an opportunity to switch to Sprint and buy an Arrive. That way I can be done with ATT's crappy service.
I'm on my third surround now, with both previous ones dead with the exact same situation you have described. I called ATT, had them replace them on warranty for free. I'm waiting for this third one to die so I can get a different model
P.S. I tried flashing the stock ROM, hard resetting, and everything else trying to get both phones back to life but I ended up just having to warranty them. Call up ATT and have them send you a new one.
Thanks, I was able to do a warranty claim. Technically I wasn't allowed to because I bought the phone outright (used) on craigslist. But since the person at ATT was lazy and didn't check when I went in the sent me to my local device support center and I was able to walk out with a new phone in 5 minutes.
Hope this doesn't keep occurring though. If they were to ever check how the phone was purchased I'd be screwed.

I had the same problem with my Surround a few months ago. Then I had another one that kept losing the data off the device. I'm on my third one now and it has been holding up for three months.
I also noticed in the store that all the display models of the phone were having the exact same issue.
I think they changed something up, as this new one seems to be hanging in there much better than the last two.

So I recently had a problem with my Rooted Droid Incredible 2 running MIUI 1.12.9, I started up my phone and it displayed the splash screen for longer than usual and then it just "died". The screen went off so I tried pressing the power button to see if it would do anything, nothing. I tried holding down the power button to see if it would change anything, nothing. I resorted to doing a battery pull, nothing. Tried charging it with two different chargers, nothing. Connecting via USB, nothing. Taking out the battery, holding the power button for ten seconds, reconnecting the battery and holding the power button for ten seconds as many have suggested; still nothing. I browsed a few threads in multiple forums and decided and came to the conclusion that my phone, simply, needs to be replaced, as I read from a similar problem that someone had of mine.
The phone had been running fine with the same ROM for about a month and a half with no problems (I had also used this ROM multiple times before; I've had this phone since May of 2011.). It was fully charged the night before and then this morning I turned it on, only to see it "die" in front of me.
So I called Verizon Customer Support and they are sending me a new Inc2 and I have to send them back my current "dead" Inc2.
So my question is; What can Verizon do if they inspect my phone, somehow get it to boot and discover that I've rooted and installed a custom ROM, along with S-OFF?
The customer support rep also told me to remove the "card" before I ship my phone back to them, SIM card or SD Card?

THIS would wipe of all YOUR data , on the phone so kindly back up all by any app like Titanium backup .

AND U NEED REMOVE THE SD CARD AND SEND THAT WHAT THEY WANTED TO SAY
Have you tried flashing another ROM? just to verify this is some kind of software problem.
Before you return your phone, flash it back to stock rom, and S-on.
The phones go back to HTC after VZW's warehouse. Thy will see that it had been unlocked and do a charge back of up to $499. Best bet would of been to step on the screen and file insurance.

First off, I did consider S-ON and RUU but seeing as I can't boot up my phone at all (unless there's some magical method of booting up a "dead" phone.) there's no way for me to do either of these.
My phone is not able to boot up. To my knowledge anyways, after I have tried the methods that I stated in my first post. If there is a method that I haven't listed, please let me know.
And I really hope you aren't serious boosterp. Further elaboration would be nice if you could do so. I would like to know how HTC could charge me $500 for doing something that they provide a service for to their customers, through HTCdev..
Edit: I cannot access my bootloader either.

All carriers have warranty contracts with the manufacturers. Just as short as a year or so ago they all have been doing "charge backs" for damaged phones returned because in turn the manufacturer charges the carrier. Rooting is specific and in all the contacts as voiding a warranty. So yes, you get to pay back retail value of the device if the warranty is anyway voided. As long as there is no physical damage and the phone will not go into HBOOT, then you are covered because HTC is only going to strip, rebuild, and/or reflash the phone and send it back to the carrier for warranty replacements. It is the same concept as if you sent the phone to the manufacturer under warranty for repair.

BTW, ask a Spint employee (have 2 ex-employees and one current who contracts for Sprint who have or is working for them) if there is one on this boar; Spint will often do an alternative replacement meaning replace one phone with a different kind. Sprint then looses money two ways, the initial cost of the equipment and some employee in a central location rebuilding or just putting that phone back into circulation.
ATT and VZW I know will sometimes do an alternative replacement because it makes "financial sense" meaning it is better than loosing you, better than sending the 24th replacement that shipping has already cost the same as the phone, or if the warranty replacement option is not in stock.

[Q] Has unrooting for warranty ever worked for anyone?

So I have a new Galaxy S3 I747 Bell Canada, and I'm thinking of rooting it, but I still have 11 months of warranty left. Now I know that I can just follow the complicated guides to 'unroot' it, if I need to send it back, but has that ever actually worked for anyone here?
Because think about it. If you need to send your phone back for warranty, it is probably broken, right? If your phone is broken, how can you possibly unroot it first? Sure there are some non-bricked reasons you could send your phone back, such as a broken camera or a small deadzone in the touchscreen, but I'm just worried that my phone will suffer a NAND flash breakdown (after that whole kefuffle in the news) or a malfunctioning CPU while in a rooted state.
But then I think, well if the NAND flash or CPU completely dies, will THEY even be able to tell if the phone is rooted? I mean sure they have tools where they can rip the flash out of the mobo and read it and see if it's rooted, but to do all that would cost them labour hours. I would imagine if I sent back a rooted phone with just a broken camera, they would turn on the phone and see the big "THIS PHONE IS ROOTED!!!" message and refuse my warranty, but if I can turn my phone on, I will unroot it before I send it in for a broken camera. But if the phone CANT turn on, would they really bother with all those low-level hardware tools to try and fix my phone and see if its rooted? Wouldn't they just send me a new phone, and possibly try and refurbish my broken one to resell, without ever noticing that its rooted?
Depends on what your issue. Most of the buttons on my D2 stopped working and I had to send it in for warranty. Had to sbf and wipe and then it was fine. VZ has additional "root counter" features, but as you aren't using their device the standard unroot procedures should be fine. I think they take care of the on-board root counter.
If your phone is completely unusable then you're just out back. Obviously you can't take care of what you need to do if the phone isn't functioning at all. That said, depending on the damage they might not even be able to check for root anyway, and they just might not care. Also depends on your carrier's policies.

So, I flashed my S8+ onto BatMan-Rom today with no apparent issues. Clean flash, booted with no problems. While restoring apps (not system data) with Titanium Backup, my phone's screen switched off and I couldn't get it back on. The phone got really hot but would not reset with holding power+vol+bixby or any other button combination. Tried plugging into my PC, ADB didn't detect the phone. Desperate, I disassembled the phone far enough to disconnect the battery from the mainboard and then reconnect it, hoping that would force some kind of reset. Instead, I went from a hot phone I couldn't do anything with to a cold one. No button combo gets me anything - no recovery, no odin mode, nothing. Am I as screwed as I think I am? It seems to me I'm out $900 on a paperweight, and I can't even figure out what went wrong since I wasn't messing with anything at the system level when this happened.

Oh, dude...I feel your pain....wish I could help.
Can't you just contact the retailer and sort of, ahem, forget to tell them that you rooted it and took it apart and that it just, well, simply broke?
Surely there's some kinda warranty?
Or claim on home contents insurance?

You're proposing fraud, which is a form of theft. And ultimately, it's all the other customers who subsidize such acts.
What we customers are subsidizing is Samsung's greedy bull**** of producing different versions of a product specifically so they can get away with not offering warranty coverage for unlocked/rooted devices in North America. If there were a way for me to game the system to force them (or a retailer) to replace my phone, believe me, I would, especially since this happened when I was restoring apps and not in the course of flashing a rom or otherwise messing with anything at the system level; it does feel like a defect in the device to me at this point.
That's all academic though, since I'm outside the retailer's return window and there's not going to be anything accomplished through that angle. Worst case scenario at this point is selling the device for parts and going back to my Nexus 6P with all its battery issues until I can get my hands on a phone made by a company that doesn't pull this "no warranty for power users" crap - an Essential Phone or a Pixel 2 XL, I guess. But I would of course prefer to find a way to fix my S8+. At the moment I think the first problem is that it's not charging - battery doesn't even get warmer than room temperature after being plugged in for hours. I'm going to try a wireless charger tonight and see if the charger lights up saying it's connected to the device, but I'm not holding out much hope.
I've read that previous Galaxy devices could be reflashed to stock with special USB devices that repair shops had access to...do we know if there's anything like that with the S8?
"Power users" amount to nothing now with all the millions sold and billions made. They make more locking down there stuff. Doing the stuff we do now is considered a security risk.
Look, this is getting off topic. Whether or not you think billion-dollar corporations should be able to artificially create situations that drive certain customers to purchase devices without warranty coverage so they can ignore us when things go wrong and make another easy $800 is not really important. The situation I'm in is what it is, and I imagine others might find themselves in that situation sooner or later, so does anyone have any ideas on a) how this might have happened in the first place or b) what I might try in the way of repairs, short of replacing the mainboard?

just sent it to change/repair using ur garant...it seems a phisical problem more than firmware/software issue...if not go to a repair service so they can check wich piece is making the problem.
Theres a posibility is the mainboard so dont waste more time asking here and go to a repair center in or out of warranty.
