Hi, sorry if this is promoting clutter but I've scoured the internet (google, wiki, searching these forums and others) and haven't been able to find a solution.
Some background:
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S 4G
Running stock GB 2.3.6
A couple months ago I woke up to find my phone would not pick up and connect to the t-mobile network (it constantly displayed (searching) on the dropdown menu). After trying many things it would sometimes randomly connect to the network and allow me to send/receive messages and make calls, but it doesn't last.
Things I've tried:
Rebooting
Going in and out of airplane mode
Unselecting and re-selecting use packet data
Manually searching for mobile network operators (it recognizes that there are available AT&T and T-Mobile networks, but when I try to connect to either it fails)
Performing a factory-reset
Rooting, Flashing to a different GB ROM
Factory reset, then flashing to Slim ICS instead
Performing another total wipe/reset, and now I'm back to stock.
EDIT: Sorry, I've also gone to the T-Mobile store and switched SIM cards to no avail.
I used the new SIM card in a new phone (another Samsung Galaxy S 4G) and it works perfectly fine, it's just this phone.
If anyone could give me any other ideas I'm all ears, and I appreciate any help lent in advance.
Thank you, and if you need any other information please let me know.
And you have checked your apn settings? You have an imei number listed in the about phone?

Wifi, gps, bluetooth work at all? calling or txting or data or nothing?
Heimdall one click and re-check
Sorry for the late reply, I've been on shift.
Champ: My APN settings look correct (registered on T-Mobile US, epc.tmobile.com), and I do have an IMEI number listed.
Geto: Wifi works. GPS works. Bluetooth I haven't tried. Calling/texts/data doesn't work at all.
Itzi: Just tried heimdall one click with no success =( Picks up on the T-Mobile network (instead of saying (searching)) but doesn't display the 4G/3G/etc. next to the service bars and won't text/call.
Good be a bad chip. I'd call Samsung and talk to them. They made the phone and if your still under warranty they will do the right thing.
Could be a defective modem 'cause it gave you random connections. Are you under a contract with T-Mobile? If so, they will replace it for free. Although u have to pay the replacement fee of $25. Call them.
Hit the thanks button if it helps. It's my motivator to be more helpful.
I was afraid it was a hardware issue... Thank you for all your help, guys.
I'm not under warranty nor am I under contract. Any chance they would still replace it?
Also, if not, is there anything you recommend I do with this phone? (sell it, use it for something else, etc.)

Out of warranty they will still fix it but the price may be more than the phone is worth. Its still worth calling them to find out. AS Far as other uses the thing makes an incredible mp3 player. The Wolfson DAC in it is way better than most. In airplane more just playing music I can get 20 hours plus out of this phone. Which is pretty sweet.
If you bring it to T-mo lab, Heimdall back to stock without root, or they will blame you for this and get lazy on analysis...

I have a one-plan three sim that I have been using for ages as my unlimited portable internet access without any problems, then I put it in a tablet - still no problem. They don't mention any restriction on device use in the T&Cs. So I bought a PAYG SIM for my wife to use in her tablet. It worked for a few days then popped up with the message:
Taking your SIM card out of your mobile phone and putting it into a different device – like a dongle or tablet – isn’t what our phone plans of Add-ons were designed for.
There's no mention in the T&Cs of this but they obviously like the idea of me using it in a phone.
- - - My Questions are : How do they detect that a SIM is being used in a Tablet and not a Phone? (I'm assuming IMEI lookup or sth)
Are they going to do the same to my pay monthly SIM in my tablet?
How do I block it/reverse it if I need to (It's not in their T&Cs so it seems a little unfair)
There doesn't seem much on this when I googled it, though someone from PC Advisor had the same problem last year:

I'm interested in this too. I had an All You Can Eat data sim (PAYG) in my iPad and it worked fine for like 6 months.
That was like between just before Christmas of 2012 up to June/July 2013. I used like 30GB a month, it was EPIC!
Then, one day, everything stopped working. Just like that! And no matter what I try it's never worked again since!
I've even tried different sims in different tablets. They all work for like a day then the next day they're blocked again.
You know how there are hacks out there that enable tethering without the carrier knowing you're doing it?
Not many of them work in my experience but I have come across a couple that have, and still "do" work.
Is there a hack of some kind that can bypass this detection of a phone sim being used in an iPad?

:crying:
I'm curious as to a solution too.
No need to spoon feed me if you dont have the time.. Further reading links will do
still no answer to this?
Anyone got around this? Ive a feeling its browser based.
Right,... So I'm a newbie from London, England. I splurged on a new Galaxy Tab S t705 to use as my primary phone. I unfortunately found that my line carrier (3mobile) have a block that prevents using a normal voice sim card phone plan on their tablets. I have complained to no avail that its a phablet because it has a stock phone app but they will not budge. For personal reasons, I dont want to move carriers, so Im between a rock and several hard places.
I have tried every way for 4 days to get around this (and in the promise have been come a semi expert on firmware, flashing, odin, custom recovery, rooting, etc. I've soft-bricked my device several times and encountered numerous bootloops.
The end result is that I am a considerably wiser android user and will never go back to Apple or Windows after being enlightened to the world of Droid, BUT...I can't crack this sim block. How do they know I'm using a tablet and how do I get around it. There's a drink waiting for anyone who can help me and thousands of other Brits solve this riddle.
:good::good::good:
The only info I have found is that I suspect it is browser based. As the internet seems to work fine for other things until you open a browser. Then it detects it and boom. SIM001 error.
This was on my Ipad. It was detecting both safari and chrome based sessions. So I suspect the build number of the browsers is what it reads. Of course this is all my own speculation. I ended up getting an ASDA mobile pay as you go for the rare occasions I am outside wifi with my iPad. If your tablet truly is a phone then 3 should allow you. But I appreciate you will get nowhere with there tech support. Computer says no.
The mobile service provider gets a lots of ID of your connection when you logon their network: SIM S/N, device IMEI, etc... and this is the important ID: the device. I guess they are able to identify the device as at least what kind, like phone, table, dongle, hotspot, etc... that's the only thing what they need... so my suggestion is changing the IMEI to another device to one which is on the whitelist. But I don't know how it could affect on the device...
Can someone olease help me i have a newly purchased Moto G x1033 i got a new microsim. (Did not cut it or anything)
Moto G detects the sim but says either no service or emergency calls only.
Im running on latest the latest kitkat version.
I have tried a master reset. Manually changing operators does not help. Should i get the phone replaced or is this a software issue?
please help thanks

Do you have the possibility to try another sim?
If you can connect to an operator with another sim, then the problem must be your new sim.
Thanks for replying. I have tried 2 different sims in bothr the slots they still dont work. Though they do work on other phones. I dont think the new sim should be the problem i had used a cut sim first and then gotten a new micro sim.
UPDATE:
Some more info The signal bars are full and orange in colour/color and say No Service beneath them.
It also does show the name of the service provider at certain places.
UPDATE 2 :
I tried to switcj on mobile data and that seems to be working fine on 2G. But im still getying no service

The same thing happened to me but my G is a single sim, xt1032 cdma. When my phone was doing this, I actually tried to place and emergency call just to see if it would go through and it did not. Apparently the RF software was corrupted. To fix it I had to reflash the entire stock firmware.
Hi thanks i will try that. Could you just tell me will flashing the firmware again void my warrenty?
Also a link/tutorial to the procedure would be nice but i can look it up to.

Flashing the firmware needs an unlocked bootloader.
By doing this your waranty will be voided.
In case you just recently bought your phone I would return it and ask for a new one.
I have the same issue. The weird thing is that 2G and 3G Internet works but voice calls don't work (voice registration state is emergency calls only, data registration state is connected). I flashed stock firmware again but that didn't help solve the issue. I have tried this with multiple SIM cards. I have requested a replacement however that is pending "approval".
Im having the exact same issue i also have asked for a full refund from Flipkart.
Ill see if i should buy another peice of moto g or shall i go for xperia C/M2

This is weird. I reflashed the system partition and relocked the bootloader, and the phone is working fine now. I unlocked the bootloader and it still works. This doesn't make sense. How can reflashing just the system partition fix a network issue that occured in both stock and CM 11? The system partition had been formatted once or twice from CWM recovery earlier while I was going back and forth between CM and stock to debug this issue. Only reflashing the system partition from mfastboot fixed the issue.
it does not matter now i have returned the phone

I just received this email from Flipkart:
Please find below the statement from Motorola on your recently purchased device.
We have uncovered an activation problem with some Moto G devices sold in India. If you have unboxed your Moto G and are having network connectivity problems this applies to you.
The problem: IMEI numbers are 15-digit unique codes that help cellular networks identify valid phones. If your new Moto G s IMEI number begins with 3533 your phone is incapable of connecting to the network right now because of a programming error on our part. It may take several days before your phone will connect to the network. You can find your IMEI number listed on the box or behind the back cover. At this stage, our understanding is that this only affects the 16GB version of Moto G.
How we are fixing it: We are working around the clock with our network partners to ensure your device is listed properly in their system. Because of the complex process to activate, your device could begin working as early as Tuesday or it may take a few days after that for your specific device to begin working properly.
If you are impacted, we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused to you. We let you down and are working around the clock to fix this issue.
To help make up for the issue if you are affected, we will be crediting your Flipkart wallet with Rupees 1200/-with which you can buy a Moto G cover or an item of your choice.
If you do not want to wait a couple of days for the phone to be activated, you can exchange it for an operational unit or return it for a full refund with Flipkart, no questions asked. Your replacement request will be processed after a week.
On behalf of Motorola, please accept our deepest apologies. We are passionate about making people happy with our products and we will work tirelessly to gain back your trust.
Regards,
Flipkart Customer Care

So my guess is that reflashing the system didn't solve the issue, instead something changed on the network operator end by the time I reflashed the system partition and tested it again.
Could have been that.
Im going to order the phone again once it is back in stock.

Hallo everyone,
What's up: my Nexus 5 can't make any type of calls.
The story behind: in march the memory chip of my Nexus 5 died, so I let it repair from the official LG support (it was still under guarantee). They changed the whole Motherboard and send me it back. At the same time, I received the new SIM card from my mobile network operator (o2 Germany) because I moved from prepaid to contract, but I still keeped my number.
Since the first day with the repaired Nexus and the new SIM, the LTE worked without problem and I could surf, but I couldn't make a single call. I talkd with the o2 Germany support, and they toldt me that It could have been a problem related to the number porting. After a few weeks the porting was officially completed, but I couldn't still make any call. Then after many weeks and many support calls, I had a so simple Idea...just let's test my o2 SIM on my old Smartphone (an HTC Desire)...and finally I could make a call! So I'm sure that the problem doen't lies on the operator or the SIM.
What's happen exactly with the Nexus 5 and the o2 SIM (here the Video): the LTE Network is full available, I call a number and appears "Dialing" (sometimes the screen turns black without any reason until I press the power button, but not this time), after seconds of absolute no sounds it shows the error "Cellular network not available". Of course I tried to call different numbers, but the problem persist and it still remains, even if I use another SIM from another operator.
I'm really concerned that maybe the problem lies on the Nexus 5 hardware, maybe the antenna, after a bad repair...but that's just what I suppose.
I'm looking forward for your opinions and support, thanks a lot!
Have you taken any steps to troubleshoot?
Seems the issue is the N5, as the SIM is working, but it is unclear where the problem lies. Have you checked the APNs, do they match the ones on HTC device? Maybe try reflashing factory image? Factory reset?
You said LTE is working, so it is not antenna, I think it is a software issue. Start by checking APN.
Thanks for your answer, I will consider the antenna as functional
I have been checking the APN Settings with the same o2 SIM on the two different devices (Nexus 5 and HTC Desire), they are identical, but the Nexus 5 got some extra settings.
As usual, with the Nexus 5 I can't call, but if I move the SIM on the HTC Desire it does. Just using the same dafault APN configuration. Those are the suggested configuration on the official o2 Website, but I would just stick with the default ones that already works (on Desire).
Any suggestion?
I would do a factory reset just a last choice, because I got tons of apps and data that needs time to be reinstalled.
Another info: the LTE Network on the Nexus 5 sometimes disappears, and then appears again.
Bump, any Idea about this problem and how I could fix it?
Hallo, I'm asking again for your support
those last weeks I couldn't get rid of the problem with the calls, and I'm still clueless about how I can fix it. At the end of the month the 2 years guarantee expires, so I need to hurry up.
Summary: SMS sometimes comes later als expected, sometimes LTE Data doen't work, most of the times I can't make calls.
What I have already done:
- already moved my main SIM (o2 Network) from my Nexus 5 on an old device, and there I have no problems at all, and I can make all the calls that I want.
- already checked the APNs, they are all on defaults settings and are ok.
- already tryed to use a fully functional SIM from another network operator (TIM Italy) on my Nexus 5, even if the Network is fully available I can't make any single call.
At this point, I'm pretty sure, that the o2 SIM and the o2 Network itself works fine.
Today I have done a factory reset after a full backup on my Nexus 5. With all default an no extra app there's no improvement at all, call function works only a few times, most of the times I got the Network but the call function doesn't work properly... here just a frash Video about it:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0yEcZCOozgkdmdjZWs0bkdIUnc/view?usp=sharing
After this try the LTE Network has disappeard (here a Foto) coming back only later as EDGE Network.
Could be maybe that after the Nexus 5 repair in march, the Device was assembled incorrectly and the Antenna have an unsteady contact?
Isn't the IMEI stored on the motherboard? If so, its possible you got a motherboard with a blacklisted IMEI.

I don't think that the officially LG Support (that replaced my Nexus 5 Motherboard im march) would use Motherboards with blacklisted IMEIs. Even if my motherboard had a blacklisted IMEI, then I shouln't be able to make any single call, but that's not what happens, because I can still and receive calls sometimes.
Well then I think you already know the answer. The warranty repair wasn't successful. You've eliminated everything else except the phone, and it used to work before, correct?

Yes, sadly seems that the problem lies on the unseccessful repair. Could you reformulate your last sentence/question? I didn't understand what you you mean
Is your phone switching to 3G while calling ? Because afaik, 4G can't be used to call someone.
So I suggest you to force your phone to stay in 3G and try making a call.
When I try to make a call with the LTE (4G, with full coverage showed), the call doesn't succeed (look at the last Video that I posted) and just after this the Network disappears and shows "Mobile Network Not Available" (but this doensn't happen always), then a few second later the LTE is available again.
When I move from LTE to 3G there's no Network available, and the call just doens't work. Same with 2G.
Update: I received back from the LG repairing my Nexus 5. In order to fix the problem with the calls, the entire motherboard was swapped. I didn't received more detailed informations about this fix, but right now it works again greatly.
Hi guys,
I'm new to XDA and wanted to thank everyone for all the great posts.
I have purchased a Mate 9 MHA-AL00 recently. It has been a great phone to play around with and figure out all the great features it has.
I have been facing some trouble with regards to connecting it to my carrier. I have tried inserting my sim card and I only get the "emergency call only" prompt.
I have visited my carrier story to ensure that network settings are correct and they have verified that this is not the issue. I have visited a cell phone repair shop and they were not able to assist either.
The weird part of this is that the phone picks up my phone number and carrier information but does not connect. I have tried 3 other carrier sims and haven't had any luck either.
I did however get a little break the other day. I placed two different carrier sims in my phone at the same time. Both carriers worked! No data, just phone calls were working. After about 5 minutes, one carrier dropped. I removed the sim for the dropped carrier and the second carrier dropped as well. Could not get them to reconnect.
On a couple of occasions, a 3G sim card has worked as the only sim. It works for 5 minutes and then drops.
I've tried to research and look around to see if anyone has any similar issues and have not had any luck. I'm quite new to android phones and by no means a cell phone expert.
The phone was purchased in Malaysia and I do not have the option of returning or exchanging.
Thanks guys. I look forward to your expertise.

That's definitely not normal. Try reflashing.
Was this a brand new unit? If not you might have gotten yourself a stolen unit with a barred IMEI.

Yes try re flashing ur phone.
Download this file it is Al00 firmware, exctract the rar and copy the exctracted folder to an sd card, turn off ur phone and press 3 buttons, power volume up and down till the phone start updating.
This will wipe everything so make sure to backup first.
It is an old firmware but you can update to latest firmware in system update.
Good luck

Follow gm007's instructions and try reflashing it. If that doesn't sort it I'm afraid you're stuck. Get in touch with the seller if that's an option, you might need to ship it back to the country of origin to have it looked at by Huawei. Then again if you're in possession of stolen goods (you implied that's a possibility) you can forget that.
Bypassing IMEI locks is illegal and discussing it is against XDA's TOS.
