Hey, guys, when I get my S3 on Wednesday, I'm going to root it ASAP.
I want to remove as much bloatware as I can without losing the cool and useful things Samsung has added to their UI. Like S-voice the eyeball watching thing, the gestures etc are all things I want to keep.
What I don't want is verizon nag screens and useless apps and adware that they put on.
Any suggestions or point me to a thread where this is already talked about?
Geez No response yet? I would like to know this as well....
Id like to know to. In the mean time, I just hid them. There was only 4 apps from VZ and the only one that I use is the mobile hotspot app.
VZ mobile, apps, and nav are hidden and never seem to show up in my running apps.
I've froze in titanium backup without issue so far...
Allshare (All 3 of them)
Amazon Kindle
Apps 3.05.78
ColorGoogle+
Guided Tours
Keis air (Both)
Media Hub
Music Hub
S Suggest
S Voice
Samsung Account
V Cast Tones
Voicemail
VPN Client
VZ Nav
Yahoo (both)
Do either of the Kies apps need to be enabled in order to receive OTA updates?
I would recommend using an app like Titanium Backup that has the capability to freeze applications rather than deleting them, so you can play around with it and disable what you don't use or don't like.
I also recommend using the standard ICS application disabling capabilities first, then using a solution like Titanium Backup for those apps that cannot normally be disabled.
For the record, on my Verizon S3 I have roughly 30 applications frozen/disabled.
I actually worked in the opposite direction. I flashed the stripped version onto my phone and then manually added back the apps that I wanted to keep via Root Explorer. The only apps that I added back were Divx, Video Player, and Music FX. The phone runs fast and battery life has been GODLIKE.

I have cracked the screen of my One X and will be receiving replacement from insurance soon. My phone is not rooted or modded in any way. I would like to back up all my settings, apps, pics etc so that i can restore all the info on the replacement phone. What is the best way to do that. I would like to try to avoid if possible redownloading/installing all apps from various app stores, as well as needing to reset all my settings?

What's your software version?
And are you prepared to root/unlock the device to restore these apps and settings if required?
And depending on your provider not being able to root/unlock your new device so the above might be for nothing...
Software version 2.20
I was trying to not have to root, I have done it before on previous android phones, so i am no stranger to the process, but i am pleased with everything about this phone. I did not want to have to tinker with it. Why should i have to do all that anyways? iPhones have itunes to backup/restore. Samsung has Keis. What does HTC have? I thought that Sence had services for back up, and even location services when when i log into htcsence.com there is nothing there. I dont see any options to do anything. Why is it even there? What am i missing?
You can just transfer pics and other files (music, video, etc.) to a laptop/desktop computer by connecting your phone via USB and copying them.
As long as you have your phone set to backup to your Google account, some of your settings will stick (although not all of them), and your apps from the Play Store should be loaded to your new phone when you get it and login.
App data, such as game progress are tougher. I don't think there is an easy or comprehensive way to do it without root.
You can backup your SMS to Gmail using the app SMS Backup+. Make sure contacts and calendar are backed up to Google, and it will just automatically sync to your new phone when you login to it.
Aside from app save data (like games) and things that are not replaceable (like personal photos), its really not that tough to just redo the settings and other basic setup (homescreen, etc.) from scratch when you get your new phone. You would probably spend way more time finding out how to backup those settings, than it would take you to just do it from scratch.

If you bought your phone with 2.20, or updated the firmware without unlocking the bootloader or achieving SuperCID, there is no way to root your phone anyway.
As for HTCSense, it says right on the home page why the services are no longer there:
Why are some of the HTCSense.com services no longer available?
HTCSense.com is undergoing a renovation to improve the services and value we deliver to customers like you. Until the new services are ready, features previously available on HTCSense.com will no longer be available. If you would like phone location or backup services for your device, please visit Google Play (formerly called Android Market) and download an application the best meets your needs.
HTCSense.com has pretty much been down since I think April. They are supposed to be coming out with some new revamped version, but it seems to be MIA at this point.
Hi everyone!
I was wondering how do I go about with backing up my Nexus 5 if the need ever arose.
Being an iPhone user since Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone and I've been pretty much pampered by iTunes doing all the "heavy lifting" (read: backups). It's not elegant, it's slow, but it works whenever I migrate from an old iPhone to a new one.
Now that I've made the switch, of course I had to move most of my emails, contacts and calendar to Google's services... and they are essentially in the cloud.
Does Google actually backup any stuff for me, like what Apple's iCloud does?
So my question is, do I really need to download/purchase an app for backing up?
Hope you guys can enlighten me
Are you rooted?

Well, I'm not sure how iCloud works because I despise Apple :silly:, but the short answer is yes and no. Anything that Google syncs with it's servers is backed up (ie. Contacts, Calendar, basically anything that you can log in on a computer and access). You can set Google+ or even Dropbox to backup your pictures to the cloud just in case. That's what I do since I once deleted my whole camera folder on accident. I take it since you have been a heavy iPhone user that your N5 is not rooted? I ask because, usually, even for some paid games, they don't really make your data transferable to another device, or recoverable in case of data loss on your current device. For this reason, I root all my devices and first thing I do is make a nandroid backup using a custom recovery. That way, if anything ever goes wrong, you can always restore your phone to exactly how it was when you made the backup. Another priceless app I use is Titanium Backup. With this app, you can backup all your apps and their data (ie settings, game progress, etc.) You can even backup system apps and data, although it can be dangerous if you're not entirely sure what you are doing when restoring.

First of all by been already here, you have the tools and a 5 million community not to buy a single app never again. I personally have used rooted and unrooted android phones quite a while and I can recommend you:
1. Titanium back-up (you need to be rooted thou)
2. SMS Backup&Restore
3. Dropbox for your pics
4. Google for your users info and contacts
5. You can use File Expert to backup your Whatsapp folder to Dropbox
have fun!
If you are rooted,
Take nandroid backup - this is a system image in case everything gets screwed up
Titanium Backup - this will allow you to create backups of apps and app-data for any app, or sms or call log etc
FolderSync will backup individual files
If you are not rooted,
Email/contacts/calendar are auto-backed up to Google
Photos - enable google plus auto backup (or dropbox or copy auto-backup)
Music - store on google music, so no need for separate backup
Helium - allows backup of app/app-data
Individual files - FolderSync

iTunes or iCloud works great because you just turn it on and it backs up everything, and if required you can restore from there. To me, it's great because it's "first party".

How safe are the apps that are not available through the officially channels?
One of the apps I installed outside of the Google Play Store was Netflix as it isn't available in my country's Play Store... but I don't think it will ever see updates? (Is that correct?)
For what it's worth: I do not intend to install any antivirus in my phone...
Hey everyone, first post.
I just picked up a Gear S2 classic. I started playing around with it and so far I have a few questions and issues with a couple things. I'm pairing it with my Galaxy S7.
My first and foremost concern is the removal of the stock and bloatware apps. I realize most people may use the fitness aspect of the watch, or its other built-in features, but I won't. All of the pre-installed apps are cluttering the watch for me. For example, I won't be using the email app (I use Gmail solely), Buddy, Find My Phone (I have location turned off), S Health, Running, S Voice (I thoroughly prefer Google), Samsung Pay, World Clock (it's really irritating and pointless to have 4 different clock apps on the watch. They should be lumped into one like on the phone), Messages (unless this can work with Textra), Music Player (I use another music app on my phone, although I do appreciate that this one somehow controls the music once it's started on that app on my phone). This is a make or break point for me as far as keeping or selling the watch.
Next, is the only way to use the Galaxy Apps store to have to sign into your phone with your Samsung account? I absolutely don't want to be connected to the Samsung Cloud. This is the only reason I'm not using Samsung Pay. If I sign into anything on my phone with my Samsung account, it signs my whole phone in and connects me to the darned Samsung Cloud. Many people have their information synced up there even with all sync options off, so I want to avoid this.
Third, some notifications like the ones from Snapchat are not being acknowledged by the watch at all. And yes, all notifications are selected to appear from the Gear App (Snapchat included). And no, I don't have the blacklist setting on.
I appreciate everyone's help with this, thank you so much. As much info as possible would be wonderful.
I am just wondering why you bought this watch if you don't want any of the connected features that come with it? . In any event I don't know of any way to remove pre-installed apps

I mean, it's supposed to be something like the best smartwatch out there in a lot of ways, and I wanted essentially an extension of my phone on my wrist that could function on its own too. I also have a Moto 360 first gen I play around with here and there, and for a first generation smartwatch, it does well. So far, with the issues outlined above, I can't really say the same about the Gear S2.
I know this is a tired topic, and it seems without legit root + TB that it really isn't doable...still, I'm very curious if there are strides made that maybe I'm not aware of. All of my searches, regardless of device, seem to be more or less the same; you can get a good chunk between apps like Helium, SmartSwitch, and ADB backups, but none of those will be all-inclusive or really even close to that.
For those seasoned in this, is this just the status-quo at this point? Devs, is it safe to assume that without root, one simply cannot backup app data verbatim?
I ask for the obvious reason: I don't necessarily recall every user ID and password, all settings, etc that I set up for a given app. Especially with the introduction of finerprint readers. I seldom have to type in passwords anymore, between saved credentials in Chrome and established logins on individual apps.
I'm really hoping it isn't a far stretch to find a way to transfer, if not backup this data completely.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup
Works on majority of apps, make sure its set to app data only, otherwise it won't backup. If it nags about some desktop password remove pin/pattern or any other screen locks.
If you want to backup sms/mms/call logs use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup

I've used Helium in the past, and it wasn't all-inclusive. If I do app-data only, will it backup app data that includes login info and whatever settings I've configured per app?
You really don't have much choice, this is the only app that can backup data, you can try smart switch but I didn't have much luck with it. Just try it and hope for the best.

Are you coming from a non samsung phone? When I had to return my 1st Note 7 I backed it up to the samsung cloud and when I received the 2nd Note 7 I restored from the cloud and it did the screens, apps, data and everything. I was surprised and also happy with it.
I currently have the S7 Edge. Samsung cloud is enabled on it. I sincerely can't be the only one who is looking for this ability without root though.
Im also searching, but for per app as helium doesnt work for me

I can't remember as it's been well over a year. If you have Samsung Pass on your phone and you back it up I would think it would log you in to your individual apps.
