Hi everyone!
I was wondering how do I go about with backing up my Nexus 5 if the need ever arose.
Being an iPhone user since Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone and I've been pretty much pampered by iTunes doing all the "heavy lifting" (read: backups). It's not elegant, it's slow, but it works whenever I migrate from an old iPhone to a new one.
Now that I've made the switch, of course I had to move most of my emails, contacts and calendar to Google's services... and they are essentially in the cloud.
Does Google actually backup any stuff for me, like what Apple's iCloud does?
So my question is, do I really need to download/purchase an app for backing up?
Hope you guys can enlighten me

Well, I'm not sure how iCloud works because I despise Apple :silly:, but the short answer is yes and no. Anything that Google syncs with it's servers is backed up (ie. Contacts, Calendar, basically anything that you can log in on a computer and access). You can set Google+ or even Dropbox to backup your pictures to the cloud just in case. That's what I do since I once deleted my whole camera folder on accident. I take it since you have been a heavy iPhone user that your N5 is not rooted? I ask because, usually, even for some paid games, they don't really make your data transferable to another device, or recoverable in case of data loss on your current device. For this reason, I root all my devices and first thing I do is make a nandroid backup using a custom recovery. That way, if anything ever goes wrong, you can always restore your phone to exactly how it was when you made the backup. Another priceless app I use is Titanium Backup. With this app, you can backup all your apps and their data (ie settings, game progress, etc.) You can even backup system apps and data, although it can be dangerous if you're not entirely sure what you are doing when restoring.

First of all by been already here, you have the tools and a 5 million community not to buy a single app never again. I personally have used rooted and unrooted android phones quite a while and I can recommend you:
1. Titanium back-up (you need to be rooted thou)
2. SMS Backup&Restore
3. Dropbox for your pics
4. Google for your users info and contacts
5. You can use File Expert to backup your Whatsapp folder to Dropbox

If you are rooted,
Take nandroid backup - this is a system image in case everything gets screwed up
Titanium Backup - this will allow you to create backups of apps and app-data for any app, or sms or call log etc
FolderSync will backup individual files
If you are not rooted,
Email/contacts/calendar are auto-backed up to Google
Photos - enable google plus auto backup (or dropbox or copy auto-backup)
Music - store on google music, so no need for separate backup
Helium - allows backup of app/app-data
Individual files - FolderSync

iTunes or iCloud works great because you just turn it on and it backs up everything, and if required you can restore from there. To me, it's great because it's "first party".

How safe are the apps that are not available through the officially channels?
One of the apps I installed outside of the Google Play Store was Netflix as it isn't available in my country's Play Store... but I don't think it will ever see updates? (Is that correct?)
For what it's worth: I do not intend to install any antivirus in my phone...

Man, I am loving this tablet! I am totally addicted to the higher resolution...
Anyway, I've got almost everything configured the way I like and I was thinking about backups. If my device died, I wouldn't want to reconfigure my settings, add all my bookmarks again, etc.
What are you guys using to backup your device? Any suggestions on applications that work well with Honeycomb? I'd really like to have it so I could take a new Transformer, restore my backup and have things just like they are now.

Does a very good job.
Bookmarks, contacts, email accounts, and wifi should all be backed up to your Google account. It will even backup which apps you had installed and redownload those as well.
You can go a step further with the stock browsing app and sync your bookmarks with chrome, which to me is one of my favorite features.

Yeah, but only the ones you got from the Market.
If you are in the habit of getting APKs from... er... different places, you will need something for saving them.
A very nice app to do that is File Expert, which not only works as an excellent file manager (with working SMB support and streaming... whohooo!), but it also backs up all the installed apps (if you want even the system ones) to a single directory.
I just wiped my TF101 more or less voluntarily... I have witnessed before that in Google market only my PAID apps seem to be restored automatically; is there any way to also get the free apps at least listed? I always forget which apps I had installed

Well if you use Titanium backup you can backup all your apps so when you wipe your device you can restore them all quickly and easily.
I dont use Google to backup my apps, much easier to use Titanium.
One other app that is really good is Mybackup you can backup your apps that way as well along with many other features but most are really designed for a phone.

Yeah, I know. I have Ti Backup but as I stated in my post I wiped more or less voluntarily... That's why I was wondering if there is some kind of Google magic that can be used as a backup-backup So basically it was my fault to not make a Ti Backup first. Luckily, I don't have any important data on the TF!
For me it restores all my downloaded apps automatically by default, weird.
if you log onto market. android.com go under my market account and that lists everyapp you ever downloaded.

I also found an app called AppBrain App Market which apparently also stores the installed app information and can be used to sync with any given device. It's got really good reviews and is free
EDIT: I think I know what might be the reason that I do not get the free apps. When I click on the apps in market.google.com they show up as "installed" although they are not! Either I am missing a setting or it's a bug in the system!

Someone told me that in essence, the Google app store does the same thing, so long as your phone is set to back up your apps. If this is the case, which process does everyone here prefer?
I still use tibu. Google is unreliable. You can't force it to restore.

Not exactly the same. The Play Store will restore your apps without data. In essence, it just redownloads all your apps so you don't have to. TiBu will store data as well. Also, TiBu will backup and restore any app that you installed from outside the Play Store (like Swiftkey 3 Beta or the Amazon App Store) and restore apps much faster (since they are already downloaded, all it has to do is batch install them).
TiBu has a plethora of features too like automatic backups and syncing and such. However, restoring your apps with data may cause some headaches sometimes. For instance, restoring Friendcaster Pro with data after doing a wipe will break push notifications until I remove my Facebook account and re-login. Though restoring data to something like Tasker is freaking great since I don't have to go through the hassle of setting up all my profiles again.
Thank you very much for confirming my thoughts. I'm a long-time Titanium Backup user, and I don't doubt that sometimes the app store restoration process can be unreliable. I shall continue with what I know works, and works well!
So I'm a toro GNex guy. I am a crackflasher. I am not a big fan of dirty installs. I do use Titanium backup to restore some of my apps. Anyone have directions on how to restore Google Now data or which application it's stored in? Any info is helpful. Thanks

If I recall correctly, Google Now data is stored in the cloud. If not, it would probably be stored in Google Search.
So would that mean that when installing new Rom's and signing the phone back up with the same gmail account, the Google Now information would basically reinstall itself? I know I might need to redo some of the setting, which is no big deal, I just wanted to it to keep 'learning' and not lose previous data...if that makes sense.

It makes perfect sense I was wondering the same thing actually when I was flashing ROMs. Google now data is stored in the cloud, I know this because when I go to google maps there's a little check mark that shows me where my work is and where my home is that it learned. This is Google Maps on the computer that I'm talking about so it must not be device specific.

All of my searches, regardless of device, seem to be more or less the same; you can get a good chunk between apps like Helium, SmartSwitch, and ADB backups, but none of those will be all-inclusive or really even close to that.
For those seasoned in this, is this just the status-quo at this point? Devs, is it safe to assume that without root, one simply cannot backup app data verbatim?
I ask for the obvious reason: I don't necessarily recall every user ID and password, all settings, etc that I set up for a given app. Especially with the introduction of finerprint readers. I seldom have to type in passwords anymore, between saved credentials in Chrome and established logins on individual apps.
I'm really hoping it isn't a far stretch to find a way to transfer, if not backup this data completely.

I've used Helium in the past, and it wasn't all-inclusive. If I do app-data only, will it backup app data that includes login info and whatever settings I've configured per app?
You really don't have much choice, this is the only app that can backup data, you can try smart switch but I didn't have much luck with it. Just try it and hope for the best.

Are you coming from a non samsung phone? When I had to return my 1st Note 7 I backed it up to the samsung cloud and when I received the 2nd Note 7 I restored from the cloud and it did the screens, apps, data and everything. I was surprised and also happy with it.
I currently have the S7 Edge. Samsung cloud is enabled on it. I sincerely can't be the only one who is looking for this ability without root though.
Im also searching, but for per app as helium doesnt work for me

I can't remember as it's been well over a year. If you have Samsung Pass on your phone and you back it up I would think it would log you in to your individual apps.
