I know this is a tired topic, and it seems without legit root + TB that it really isn't doable...still, I'm very curious if there are strides made that maybe I'm not aware of. All of my searches, regardless of device, seem to be more or less the same; you can get a good chunk between apps like Helium, SmartSwitch, and ADB backups, but none of those will be all-inclusive or really even close to that.
For those seasoned in this, is this just the status-quo at this point? Devs, is it safe to assume that without root, one simply cannot backup app data verbatim?
I ask for the obvious reason: I don't necessarily recall every user ID and password, all settings, etc that I set up for a given app. Especially with the introduction of finerprint readers. I seldom have to type in passwords anymore, between saved credentials in Chrome and established logins on individual apps.
I'm really hoping it isn't a far stretch to find a way to transfer, if not backup this data completely.

Works on majority of apps, make sure its set to app data only, otherwise it won't backup. If it nags about some desktop password remove pin/pattern or any other screen locks.
If you want to backup sms/mms/call logs use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rerware.android.MyBackup

I've used Helium in the past, and it wasn't all-inclusive. If I do app-data only, will it backup app data that includes login info and whatever settings I've configured per app?
You really don't have much choice, this is the only app that can backup data, you can try smart switch but I didn't have much luck with it. Just try it and hope for the best.

Are you coming from a non samsung phone? When I had to return my 1st Note 7 I backed it up to the samsung cloud and when I received the 2nd Note 7 I restored from the cloud and it did the screens, apps, data and everything. I was surprised and also happy with it.
I currently have the S7 Edge. Samsung cloud is enabled on it. I sincerely can't be the only one who is looking for this ability without root though.
Im also searching, but for per app as helium doesnt work for me

I can't remember as it's been well over a year. If you have Samsung Pass on your phone and you back it up I would think it would log you in to your individual apps.

Only problem I have is that after I backed up on Back up pro like I always do & works fine, That it will not find the files, Would not restore for that reason, Im not to happy with the FROYO 2.2 thing, other than that it works good & fast.
Can some one help me on how to restore after the update
???
I had the same issue....Back Up Pro could not find the apps. But I chalked it up to a different ROM. and reinstalled my apps the old fashioned way. I have since learned to list ny Apps so when I find the paid ones they will install.
So Im really worried about the data ? How can I get that, Is there another back up app better ? thats whats bothering me.
Use Titanium Backup. It now works with Froyo on the Captivate. Another option, for apps only, is to get an Appbrain account and sync your apps with Appbrain. That way, if the worst happens at least you can reinstall from there, but you won't have the data.

AppBrain has been brilliant for app restores for me. That is one thing I always hated about flashing roms/doing resets, and although you still have to click through the permissions, it works great. The fast web installer is awesome too...
yeah i just use appbrain
Titanium Backup is Better
TB (Titanium Backup) is better to use because it can restore not just the app, but the data and settings as well. All AB (Appbrain) does is perform a reinstall of the app minus any data you may have created with the app.
A good example would be your email app. With TB you would get back all your email configuration and settings. While with AB, you would have to go through the process of setting up your email account info all over again as well as any other config settings.
If you use LauncherPro, you know how tedious it is to set it up just the way you like. Use TB and you get it back just the way you left it without having to go through the lengthy customization process.

Chainfire (edit) Darkstriker told me the same in i9000 faq thread. He seemed to think it's discussed everywhere and obvious. Well I've read through at least a couple of the most recent active threads on the topic, and certainly it is not posted everywhere and is not obvious.
Can you point to a thread detailing specific instances of problems? All the problems I've read about are with SYSTEM DATA... widegets and SMS mostly. I have not found anyone mentioning problems with normal app data.
edit: and BTW three apps failing out of a couple of hundred is a big so what.. so long as un-install and re-install of those apps fix it without messing up the whole system. I thought it's pretty hard for a single app to do too much damage to the whole system in android.
Hello all,
I have a neighbor who has a son that has been getting into trouble...specifically a lot of illegal activity. I don't want to go to far into it but it is very serious trouble (not just smoking weed or whatever). My neighbor has installed the app "SMS Backup and Restore" onto the sons phone without the sons knowledge. All SMS will be sent to my neighbors email. The phone was rooted so I was able to make the app a system app so it cannot be uninstalled.
However, we still have 2 remaining issues.
1.) The app icon could generate suspicion
2.) If a user of the phone clicks "clear data" than the settings of the app will be erased and the SMS messages will not be received by my neighbor
How would we be able to remove the app icon from the launcher as well as disable the clear data button? One idea I had for disabling the clear data button was to get the source code of the app and going from there. The source code, however, is not publicly available so that plan has been thrown out the window.
Anyone have any ideas or is this completely impossible?
SMS backup and restore is not a "spying" app, all the backups are stored locally on the system, so your neighbor would still have the problem of retrieving said information, which I guess is your question. Your solution would to install malware on his phone that would sit on the phone without any icons or appearing in the applications menu. However, I would recommend that your neighbor talk to his/her son, rather than attempt to spy on him. If he finds out, it would only cause your neighbor's plan to backfire and probably make things worse.

The SMS Backup and Restore has an option where the backups can be sent to an email address. My neighbor has tried talking to his son before but the son refuses to listen to reason of any sort. Where could we acquire the malware to install on the phone?

Hi everyone!
I was wondering how do I go about with backing up my Nexus 5 if the need ever arose.
Being an iPhone user since Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone and I've been pretty much pampered by iTunes doing all the "heavy lifting" (read: backups). It's not elegant, it's slow, but it works whenever I migrate from an old iPhone to a new one.
Now that I've made the switch, of course I had to move most of my emails, contacts and calendar to Google's services... and they are essentially in the cloud.
Does Google actually backup any stuff for me, like what Apple's iCloud does?
So my question is, do I really need to download/purchase an app for backing up?
Hope you guys can enlighten me
Are you rooted?

Well, I'm not sure how iCloud works because I despise Apple :silly:, but the short answer is yes and no. Anything that Google syncs with it's servers is backed up (ie. Contacts, Calendar, basically anything that you can log in on a computer and access). You can set Google+ or even Dropbox to backup your pictures to the cloud just in case. That's what I do since I once deleted my whole camera folder on accident. I take it since you have been a heavy iPhone user that your N5 is not rooted? I ask because, usually, even for some paid games, they don't really make your data transferable to another device, or recoverable in case of data loss on your current device. For this reason, I root all my devices and first thing I do is make a nandroid backup using a custom recovery. That way, if anything ever goes wrong, you can always restore your phone to exactly how it was when you made the backup. Another priceless app I use is Titanium Backup. With this app, you can backup all your apps and their data (ie settings, game progress, etc.) You can even backup system apps and data, although it can be dangerous if you're not entirely sure what you are doing when restoring.

First of all by been already here, you have the tools and a 5 million community not to buy a single app never again. I personally have used rooted and unrooted android phones quite a while and I can recommend you:
1. Titanium back-up (you need to be rooted thou)
2. SMS Backup&Restore
3. Dropbox for your pics
4. Google for your users info and contacts
5. You can use File Expert to backup your Whatsapp folder to Dropbox
have fun!
If you are rooted,
Take nandroid backup - this is a system image in case everything gets screwed up
Titanium Backup - this will allow you to create backups of apps and app-data for any app, or sms or call log etc
FolderSync will backup individual files
If you are not rooted,
Email/contacts/calendar are auto-backed up to Google
Photos - enable google plus auto backup (or dropbox or copy auto-backup)
Music - store on google music, so no need for separate backup
Helium - allows backup of app/app-data
Individual files - FolderSync

iTunes or iCloud works great because you just turn it on and it backs up everything, and if required you can restore from there. To me, it's great because it's "first party".

How safe are the apps that are not available through the officially channels?
One of the apps I installed outside of the Google Play Store was Netflix as it isn't available in my country's Play Store... but I don't think it will ever see updates? (Is that correct?)
For what it's worth: I do not intend to install any antivirus in my phone...
So recently I factory reset my Nexus 5 because it was having performance issues, and during my time before resetting it, in the settings, my Nexus 5 data was backed up, as shown in the image below. Now, when I reset my N5 I forgot to uncheck back up my data, so there is an image of my N5 in googles cloud. And when I set up my phone, it asked if I wanted to restore from back up or scratch, and I chose scratch. But the thing is, I don't want the backup saved in the cloud.
So my question is this: How do I delete previous cloud backups?
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
Log on to the gmail address on a PC and delete the back up data from there.
Can you be more specific? Where can I find the Cloud backups?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Free mobile app
First, untick those two options from your screenshot. Then you have to log out from your google account on phone and log in again.
deleting nexus backups
i've been trying to delete my nexus backups from the cloud. can't figure out how to. all these tutorials just keep sending you off into a different direction. the replies you get on the forums are usually poor quality. or google figures out a way to store away your information indefinitely.
I too want to know "where" specifically on the Google website I can find the phone backup and delete it.
Does anyone know? Is it even possible?

http://developer.android.com/tools/help/bmgr.html
Warning!
When backup is disabled, the current backup transport will explicitly wipe the entire active data set from its backend storage. This is so that when a user says they do not want their data backed up, the Backup Manager respects that wish. No further data will be saved from the device, and no restore operations will be possible, unless the Backup Manager is re-enabled (either through Settings or through the above bmgr command).

It seems that disabling backup deletes all backed up files on the server.
disabling backups does not delete the older backups
when we disable the backup, one may want to assume that no information is being stored on google servers. but what happens really is, no new back up is created, but the older backups remain.
so if you reset your device again, you'll see the older backups reflecting on google's servers. only nothing new has been stored.
i have backups that are ranging from 3-4 months old to last year. i don't want google to store my information, but i cannot figure out a way to remove these.
p.s. thanks for approving my first post. have been a smartphone user since xda days. hopefully looking to learn and contribute here.

Dear Celestial Fury
The screenshot you've provided seems very dated. If I use Google Dashboard from the link you have provided, it lists out 2 android devices, while I have only one. Then, if I click on Manage Android Devices, I am unable to view the location of my Nexus, like one can do on the Find my iPhone Application, and there are options to erase the device and lock it. But there is no option to manage the backups and delete them.
Sorry to say, but a reply like yours has earlier as well sent me on a wild goose chase. Google has changed the way we approach the dashboard, I believe.
Dear @r7un,
You don't see this part in your Google Dashboard - all on the same page after signing in and clicking on Android?
If by dated screenshot you mean logged in to Google Dashboard and taken JUST BEFORE I posted?
Detailed instructions then:
Sign in to Google Dashboard
Click on Android NOT Manage Active Devices (It'll show you all the devices you have. You may have more than one listing if you're using XPrivacy to randomize your IMEI. A different IMEI counts as a different device. This thread is about deleting android backup. If you can't see location then perhaps your phone is blocking location permissions or your browser is or Google location is not working or slow.)
Scroll to the last device listed and you'll see Delete backup data.
By clicking the button you will permanently delete backup data of the account '[email protected]'. Please note that new backup data will be created if backup is enabled on any of your Android devices.

@Celestial Fury Do you have 'backup my data' enabled on your device?
Because it seems that we do not have the same dashboard. I have neither 'NOT Manage Active Devices' nor 'Delete backup data'. Clicking of 'Manage active devices' redirects me to the android device manager.
@Primokorn, yes I have 'backup my data' enabled on my device and I'm using it. And no, I'm not going to try clicking delete backup data to see if it actually works (in case someone decides to ask me that) .
Step 2 is click on the WORD "Android" and NOT manage active device.
Do note, this is the first time I'm using Google Dashboard after trying to find a solution for this thread so it's not that hard for any first time user to Google Dashboard.

Finally, those cloud backups are correctly deleted if we disable the backup option. I'll try during my next clean flash.

there is no link that says delete backups
i am attaching a screenshot. i hope you're able to see that. but i am afraid there is no link that says remove or delete backups when i click on the android button. really apologetic. i also tried to enable the backup on my phone and run through the steps you've detailed, but its really not working.
it really seems that google is not interested in allowing people to delete their backups.

Dear Celestial Fury, please don't get angry. Like I said earlier, there is no button that says "Delete backup". All it gives are the details of the devices. That's it. Nothing is clickable out there. Nothing as already explained
I have been increasingly disturbed by the distracting number of ads I am getting. I even get video adds that open with full volume!
There seems to be no way to ID apps that are pushing adds behind the scenes. But I wonder, even in today's add craze world, if I'm dealing with some kind of bug or malware that cannot be stopped. I mean how could a developer, legally, push endless numbers of intrusive adds anonymously, in a way that makes them unable to be ID'd and stopped?
I'm getting an S9 soon and want to avoid infecting so I'm not going to transfer files from the S8. I will reinstall amm my apps from the Play Store. But what about app data? Can I copy data files to an ext drive then copy them onto the S9, after I've reinstalled the app? Of course, apps with a backup option wouldn't be a problem.
Hi, looks like some apps might be pushing the ads. Best option would be to locate the app pushing the ads. Unfortunately, you will have to manually uninstall and check. However, you can take backup of your apps and data with titanium backup beforehand.

You will have to use either google or samsung back up option to get your app data back. The data is stored on a part of the device you have no access to without root.
Get an ad blocker of a VPN. IF you use youtube then you can get an ad free version without root. I personally have not seen an ad in years.

Yes, it appears that is what is what's happening and that there is no way to ID the source. It seems, to me, that there ought to be a law against such an action. It's clearly deceptive and dishonest.
