Hey all! Long time lurker, first time poster. Is anyone working on running the Nexus 5 on multiple networks? Specifically, Sprint and Tmobile?
I don't see why this wouldn't work right off the bat. In my head, the radios are present and sprint uses the imei number instead of a Sim card. So shouldn't it work similar to a dual Sim phone?
My hope is to keep my $30 T-Mobile plan and add FreedomPop as my source for free minutes when in a sprint area.
I'd love to hear from everyone, my searching couldn't find anything but if your googlefu is better than mine please help!
Thanks,
Matt

I never thought about this before but now that you mention it, it could be pretty cool to have access to two LTE networks if one of them is being slow. Sprint want a ICC security SIM card in the phone though, not sure if you could bypass this or use the phone without it anyway.
You need a sim card for spring LTE and voice/data on T-Mobile, and there is only one sim slot.

Thanks for the quick replies guys! I'm still very interested in it, perhaps you are right that the security Sim could be bypassed. I'd love this to gain some traction, this would be an incredibly unique feature to boast!
The phone doesn't have dual radios to even accommodate this anyway. So even if you were somehow able to activate it with a TMO SIM and on Sprint (which alone would take a ton of ROM hacking), you still physically couldn't talk to both networks. The radio would need to pick one or the other. It can't just flip flop at will, it has to set up the connection with the tower and maintain it.
I disagree. If you were to activate it on sprint, you could use it without the sprint Sim... You just would not get LTE. So technically you could activate it on Sprint (as you don't activate the phone on T-Mobile just the sim).
It would be cool if we could bypass the sprint Sim necessity.

This won't work because when connected to LTE on Sprint it uses eCSFB to fall back to 1x to accept the call. This happens over the LTE connection. If you're connected to tmobile LTE, there's no way for it to tell you you have a call incoming from Sprint's network.

So do you think it could feasibly work as a simple menu option choice, or a widget to switch networks? I personally use Google Voice so receiving calls would happen in whichever network happens to be connected

No, you actually have to switch the SIM. Once it's registered to Sprint with a SIM, then swapping that SIM for another carrier's SIM completely switches it over. Then, when you want to use Sprint again, you put your Sprint SIM back.

I guess what terky meant is he will forward calls to two numbers in Google voice settings ( let's say T-Mobile and freedompop) and then whichever network will be active will receive the call. So you will still be receiving the call.
Sounds logical but it has to be tried.
I see freedompop's website now accepts meid numbers. But my concern is; will activating the nexus 5's meid number on freedompop block using the gsm functionality of the phone??
If not, it would be just terrific!!

So with the new Android 5.1 update, which now supports dual sim, (I know guys N5 only has one sim card slot) do you think it would be easier to do this?
My idea is to get a freedompop service with the imei number, just registering the phone online and you dont physically need a sim card from them. And lets say we use another sim card ( Att, tmob, etc) to use. So basically we would have two service providers.
And from my point of view; i wouldnt need both of their services at the same time. Lets say i want to use freedompop first, and whenever it expires, I can switch to my other carrier manually.
Any thoughts on this?
Brainstorming?!?!?!
Hi,
I am facing this problem for long and have not found any solution.
I am using Jio sim in SIM 1 slot and Airtel in SIM 2 slot. I am using Jio sim for 4G data connection. Whenever I receive call on any SIM the 4G data connection drop. Not sure what is the issue.
Please advice.

2 months. So should I take it as there is no solution.
My guess, and it is a guess, is that when you have a dual sim phone, and a call comes in on one line, the other line (including data) is temporarily shut down? Do you know other folks with dual sim in your area and how their phones data works with two lines when a call comes in?

Mine should be here on Thursday. I'll post some info once I get it
Thanks where did you buy it?
I got mine today from Amazon from a seller called Mobiles International (only one selling it right now). I'm on Mint mobile set up the APN and rebooted. Getting signal on par with my Mi Mix 2s no issues. I'll be posting more thorough post probably Sunday with my thoughts.

Any idea how to change our find apn for Verizon?
This phone is GSM only. That might be part of the issue with Verizon. To set the APN you go to settings>Sim cards and mobile network>click on the Sim card>Access Point Names.

Are you on t mobile? Some of my other xiaomi's phones have it enabled but it still drops to 3g during calls. But another different xiaomi with the same sim will also have it working so I've been confused whether it's carrier or device dependant
I'm on Mint Sim. I did make a few calls and discovered a few things. If you enter the above code it then shows the VoLTE option under the sim card. If I toggle it on, phone calls don't go through. Toggle off they do. I observed when making a phone call that the mobile signal says 4g rather than LTE during the call. If I use *#*#4636#*#* to go to the info screen it says the voice network type is LTE. Lower on the screen it says that VoLTE provisioned is off. If I toggle mobile radio power off then on the LTE provisioned will then go to On. If I try to make a call the connection resets (network drops for like a minute) and the LTE provisioned toggle goes back to off once the network comes back up.

I'm on Mint Mobile too. I've been trying to find any info I can to enable WiFi Calling, as Band 2/4/5 coverage in my area is weak, and the only strong signal we have at our home is Band 12 which this phone doesn't support, unfortunately.
A few observations:
I disabled both the VoLTE carrier check (*#*#86583#*#*) and the VoWiFi carrier check (*#*#869434#*#*) and enabled both toggles within the SIM card settings page with no luck.
I also saw the settings you mentioned on the hidden info/settings screen ( *#*#4636#*#*) and, similarly to what you said, any options I modify simply revert back. IMS Status is also indicated as "Not Registered" in the more tab at the bottom, and I'm not sure if this is directly related to these features not working. I can't seem to register my SIM Card with the Xiaomi SIM Activation Service either (it requires an international text or something). When I attempt to do so, I just receive a "Can't activate SIM card; Server error occurred while requesting an activation SMS." message. I linked my number with my MI Account on the website, but I still am getting that error, so I'm not sure what's going on there.
Lastly, if I change my phone's WiFi Calling option to WiFi Only (via another secret menu that I accessed with an app literally called "WiFi Calling" lol) it can't make any outgoing calls at all. It can only function with a mobile connection available. If anyone has any info to share on the possibility of enabling WiFi Calling on this phone in the US, or has had experience with configuring other stingy Xiaomi phones, that would be greatly appreciated.
I know in the mint app there's a toggle to turn on wifi calling which is off by default. Did you turn that on?

Oh, yes. I have. At this point I may just have to purchase a cell signal booster for our home, but VoWiFi would definitely be the best case scenario.
Changing regions
Anyone know if you could do factory reset and select a different region that would put you on different bands for Verizon allowing me to get service here in the US? Just checking if anyone's tried that ?

I'm on t mobile and have a few different budget phones from xiaomi and none of them stay on lte during calls for some reason even though I have the volte toggle enabled after dialing the code. Only one of my xiaomi phones which is a more expensive kind will have volte working by default with the same sim card. Not sure what the differences are between them but the budget phones are volte capable for other users just with a different service. Weird because if it's carrier related and my same sim isn't working then something else isn't right. Volte will be an important requirement in the US starting in 2021 because of the 3g shutdown right?
There is a pc tool to modify the modem and also a different one for band unlocking but not too sure how reliable they are. People did have success with it though check out this thread here

It's a different xiaomi phone but I think the method could be similar. On the last page, someone on t mobile said they were able to get volte and rcs working after some changes. Not sure about wifi calling though. I might try this myself soon though I'm not too advanced with it. It should be fine if an old budget phone is used for testing. Seems to be one of the most useful info I've found after some digging around

The only Verizon bands this phone supports are the 4G bands 2, 4, and 5. No 2G or 3G. It's tailored more so for GSM carriers and Verizon is a CDMA carrier. I don't see how factory resetting or changing the region would affect the bands as that has more to do with the internal modem and antennae than it does the software. But I could very well be mistaken. Awhile back I know there was a weird method to "unlock all bands" if your phone had a Qualcomm chip in it, so phone tech and their carriers can admittedly be a bit of an enigma to me lol. Regardless, I'd advise against getting this phone if you're on Verizon.

Thanks a ton for this info! My dad has a Redmi Note 7 so I might try this out for both of us and see what kind of results I can get.
I stumbled across this icon today, to my surprise. I had followed the steps to modify the modem in the phone, but could not really find an adequate profile among the options to enable for T-Mobile/Mint in the US. I mostly work from home where my cell signal isn't the greatest, so I didn't even see it until a couple days after the modifications.
I'm not entirely sure if it's the modifications to the modem that caused the icon to appear, or simply enabling it via the dialer code but I was surprised to see it, nonetheless.
I tried making a few calls with it, but it seems to disappear when I get into an actual phone call, and unfortunately I have no news on the VoWiFi front.
I just updated to 6.0.0.122 and now everytime I try to make a call it hangs up right away and says call ended. In the call log it says cancelled. I'm using at&t and it was working fine before the update. Any ideas? Thanks!
Try switching the at&t sim to the second sim.

If you have a different network sim, try it with Magic V or put the AT&T sim in another phone to see if the problem is with the device software or the network.

Hi,
Aren't you able to downgrade to the older version?
If your carrier hasn't provisioned VoLTE via the SIM for your phone, then you will be able to connect to the fastest available data network (ie 4G or 5G) for streaming, downloading, etc., but voice calls will drop to 3G. VoLTE enables calls to be made over 4G or 5G. The problem is that US carriers are actively shutting down all 3G networks, so you will have data, but not voice unless VoLTE is enabled.
I had to factory reset today (actually I used the Android Flash Tool just to make sure I had a totally clean slate). I was using my Boost (AT&T) pSIM with my Tello (T-Mobile) eSIM no problem but I installed the eSIM for the free T-Mobile Network Pass yesterday and it was acting weird. Kept losing data, sometimes I would lose both my Tello and T-Mobile eSIMs... It was very strange as I never have any issues with the phone so I swapped the T-Mobile eSIM for my Boost pSIM at which point Boost and Tello started working together perfectly again.
Well today I decided I wanted to see if the T-Mobile eSIM was working any better. I mean it should seeing how my Tello eSIM on the same network works fine. I tapped on the T-Mobile eSIM, it prompted me to turn off my Boost or Tello SIM, I told it to turn off Boost, and immediately I was right back to having data and signal issues. Went to turn my Boost pSIM back on and it was nowhere to be seen in the network settings. The phone acted like there was no SIM at all. Removed it, put it back in, rebooted the phone, reset network settings... Nothing would work. Even worse, when it was in, it knocked out the signal on my two eSIMs right after it got inserted each time. I freaked out thinking my SIM slot died, pulled out the Boost pSIM, stuck my old Tello pSIM in and... It popped right up. Put the Boost pSIM in my OnePlus 9 and it worked there so I knew at this point it was my phone but I thought that it could still be software. Ended up biting the bullet and restoring the stock .031 ROM (I was on the beta 3 QPR), stuck the pSIM in when the phone was at the home screen, and I was back to having both my Tello eSIM and my Boost pSIM again.
I don't know what was up with the T-Mobile eSIM but I removed it since I have no desire to mess around with this and have to reset again. This could have been a fluke or it could be a legit bug. Also, I forgot to mention, I tried disabling the T-Mobile eSIM when I was trying to get the Boost pSIM to be recognized again and the phone said that there was an error. Same when I tried to delete it. I had to reboot to get it to cooperate.
I would advise people wanting to mess with dual eSIM to be careful. This isn't the first glitch I've had with it. In fact the first time I enabled dual eSIM, Settings crashed, and I have gotten the error turning off an eSIM once before as well when I had US Mobile eSIM and Tello eSIM active and wanted to switch back to my SafeLink pSIM but that time it just took a reboot to fix it.
As for the T-Mobile eSIM issue, my guess is the phone didn't like two SIMs connected to the same network. It could be a modem limitation. On my 12 Pro Max I was able to use Tello on pSIM and T-Mobile on eSIM no problem but that could be a Qualcomm vs Samsung thing or it could be specific to dual eSIM. Like I said, I'm not willing to mess with it anymore. I had to do all this at my partner's house and I ended up losing everything on my phone besides what was backed up to the cloud by Google. It's not a huge deal as none of it was all that important but it's a pretty big inconvenience as I had about 50GB of stuff on there that I'll have to manually download and restore.

I mean I explained the whole sequence of events as they happened. Not much more that I can really do.
I was able to trigger this again. I was trying to see if I could get the QCI for my eSIM with Network Signal Guru so I told the phone to disable the pSIM and it disappeared again. Reinserting it didn't work. What did was turning off my eSIM and *then* reinserting the pSIM. Since I opted to go back to .031, this bug appears to be in both the release and beta versions.

I'm seeing very similar behavior with a physical sim and an e sim
I had planed to leave the pSim in the phone for calls/sms and using an eSim for data.
Data connection is "spotty" at best, if i don't see the same behavior and i just lose connection on both (both showing with a little x)
Even worse, my pSim isn't reachable randomly and only starts working again when i either start a call, or reboot the phone. (Seeing this as i'm getting a bunch of sms from my provider about missed calls)
(This is on a Pixel 7, i'm just adding the info here as for me with as a first time eSim user it feels very buggy)

Are both of them on the same network by chance? My phone seems to do fine with AT&T network pSIM and T-Mobile network eSIM or Verizon network eSIM and T-Mobile network eSIM but when it was dual T-Mobile eSIM, it freaked out. I have used dual SIM since I got the phone without any issue until I tried two from the same network.

Hi Ethereal,
I wasn't sure and checked, it's two different networks (two biggest networks we have here in Switzerland)
I can confirm this same bug still exists in the November update.
To trigger it all I have to do is have a pSIM and an eSIM active and then turn off the pSIM. It disappears from the list on the SIM screen and removing and re-inserting it doesn't re-enable it unless I disable the eSIM first.
You can see what I mean in this video. Once I turn off the pSIM, it disappears from the list of SIMs in the phone.

It may not be a "dual esim" problem, according to this thread, there may be issues with tello sim configurations even in physical format; https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/data-connectivity-major-problems.4519577/

No, it happens no matter what eSIM I have active. If I have an eSIM active and disable the pSIM, it disappears from the phone entirely.
Also, my Tello pSIM had issues but my Tello eSIM has been fine.

Also, my Tello pSIM had issues but my Tello eSIM has been fine.

Is there always a Tello *something* when there are issues?

No. It happens with a Verizon eSIM too. It's definitely a bug. In fact I just tested a hunch and if I turn off the eSIM first, I can disable the pSIM without it disappearing, so it's something with the eSIM being active and the pSIM not that's the issue.
Hello. iPhone 13 Pro Max definitely supports two eSims from the same carrier but of diff number, whereas Android 13 can’t seem to do it. Maybe it’s because there is only one EID per phone, despite two IMEI? Thanks. Will December update fix this? Are we saying iOS is more superior? I am using TMobile network pass (3 months free) and T-Mobile grandfathered plan.

I haven't actually done further testing to confirm my suspicions so it's all a guess at this point. That said, the iPhone uses a Qualcomm modem and the Pixel uses Samsung, it wouldn't surprise me to find this to be one of the inherent differences between the two modems. I also can't see it being an issue for more than 99% of people as most run dual SIM to have different carriers.
I'm utilizing both physical sim and esim and it's marginal at best. Both numbers are T-Mobile, the physical sim struggles for connection at times it shouldn't and text/sms is hit and miss. I believe in part it's rcs that's problematic but not sure. Voicemail is another issue, depending which sim I have set for default is the one that receives voicemails. My previous phone was a note 20 ultra direct from Samsung and that had no such issues.

I have zero major issues using two different networks. I'm using Boost Mobile (AT&T network) pSIM and Tello (T-Mobile) eSIM just fine. It was only when I was using two T-Mobile that things went wacky.
Or if I turn off the pSIM in the settings instead of removing it... That causes it to disappear entirely from the phone. Really annoying.
Hopefully they can address these issues but even with them, I'm still pretty happy with my phone so far. Still much less buggy than the OnePlus 9 it replaced.
