Getting my ‎note 20 ultra international (SM-N986B) saterday and thinking about getting back into the root scean. - Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Questions & Answers

So back in the day I used to root all my phones. HTC one, HTC one m9, some old LG phone, all of my Samsung notes and anything ni could get my hands on. I loved and died by the venom roms for anything I could put them on. Recently I started looking back Into the scean and it seems like it's not as popular anymore. That being said is it really worth rooting the note 20 ultra once I get it? I could care less about Samsung pay but I do need access to my bank account, PayPal and so on. I read about a work around for the saftynet thing and wanted to know if that was indeed still possible, if so what good roms are there now? I'm upgrading from my note 10+ from att that's Sim unlocked so I'm excited to be able to root again after all these years but want to make sure it's still worth it.

Yes you can use close to any app with Magisk Zygisk Deny List + Universal SafetyNet Fix.
Is root still worth it? Nobody can answer this but you.
AdBlock, GMSDoze, Debloat and other Mods are enough to justify root for me.
Is it enough for you? IDK

That's fair, imo it still is but I'm still stuck on where to find decent roms. Before there was a lot of options but from what I gathered it's a very niche market that still makes roms.

Its a niche by now on many phones. I think samsung is closed too much but they are very good out of the box. You have to seperate a lot if you like to have custom roms. OnePlus before the 8 series or the pixel series are a very good choice. I guess "Nothing" will be good in the future too.

I think all root discussion is going on in the Note 4 Developers ONLY section...it is probably fair to assume any root method found for the Note 4 and S5 would work for the S6. But still no major progress. As in the past a root method will probably come out of nowhere from a developer that rarely posts.

Yeah, this kind of sucks. Every phone I've ever owned I have always rooted and I really miss some of the root functionality.

Time to switch from Verizon or AT&T then if you must stay with a Samsung phone. They got a pretty good lock on their security software so far.

I know, but T-Mobile's coverage sucks compared to Verizon....ugh. I would switch to them in a second if it was better. I have Verizon for my business and switching to T-Mobile could save me about $3000 a year over Verizon.

Then perhaps trying a less secure Verizon phone if you do not have T-Mo coverage, like HTC. I think the M9 still cannot be rooted or S-OFF but the M8 can.

This is correct. Verizon s6 will be much like the Note 4, it will never see root. Sad, but true.
And still no word on a developer edition :/
We may be hoping for another futex/towelroot type of kernel level exploit that can leverage root for multiple devices. They don't come along every day but they do come along on occasion. I'd be surprised if there's a targeted root exploit for Samsung devices but I'd be thrilled to be wrong on that.
As for the bootloader...I'll be planning on never. Somebody (or a team of somebody's) might get it, but I won't blame them when they sell it for far more coin than they'll make from some partially paid bounties.
The Note 4 and S6 have different SoCs so its not the same at all. Besides these differences, alas there will be no bootloader unlock.
my 2 cents
On a general basis, i think the galaxy s devices are a little more popular than the note series, and the s6 is proving to be more popular than the s5. So hopefully with a larger following will come increased chances of root....hopefully
I will say this though, the S6 has been the first device I've owned that i didn't want to root right out of the box. Root at this point would just be nice to have for a little more control over the device.
Verizon root
I would pay 500 bucks to a dev that could root this phone, to bad I dont know any personally.:crying:

While I understand each device is different, does anyone know approximately how long it took for previous Samsung devices to get a Root that didn't disable Knox from when they were released? (S6, S6 edge?).
Also will the T-Mobile version be able to be rooted easier since it's supposedly an unlocked bootloader? I don't care about bringing it to another carrier, I'm just interested in a permanent root that doesn't trip Knox, and preferably a way to install TWRP for Roms.
This will be my first phone with no root from day one, but I'm still looking forward to this phone.

When ANdroid 5.1.1 was released on the S6 - we had to wait for Kernel Source to be released before they couid get root working - chances are this will need to happen here too - I am not sure what they did - but I beleive root had to be injected into the kernel to make it work - (not that I know what that means anyway - LOL) Suffice it to say - I am sure we will have root - but it make a take a few days - weeks - it did on the S6 - even before 5.1.1 when the S6 was first launched it was about 2 weeks before we had root - chances are that will happen now too - but it will be worth it!
Thanks for the reply, a few weeks or even a month is definitely doable. I was just afraid from other posts that there wouldn't be a root, or if it was it would take forever since there's not going to be much dev support on this phone.
the main problem will actually be that the most talented devs have stopped buying samsung phones for a variety of reasons, so there will be many fewer knowledgeable folks on this phone to do things like root and other customizations..

Samsung put a root restriction into the defconfig of the kernel. You have to change it and recompile to enable root.
And Samsung likes to release half ass kernel source as well.
I know quite a few devs who are skipping this note since Samsung didn't do so hot with it. Plus they are trying everything they can to disable all root functionally.

Yeah I tried the Nexus 6 too and just wasn't very impressed. I ended up giving one of my jump on demands up and got the galaxy s6 instead. I really do love the Samsung phones. Even if we can get fruit and just a halfway decent rom the phones are still so much better in my opinion. I go back and forth with it but usually end up with Samsung, I just love their screens cameras and general functionality

My big thing is front facing speakers. The camera is OK, but then again I have a high end DSLR for pictures.
Dont get me wrong, Samsung makes a premium device. But I cannot deal with a company that is completely against root and modding a phone.
If I pay 800$ for it. ITS MINE. Let me do what I want.
So I'll never own anything Samsung ever again.
Fastboot OEM unlock, fastboot flash recovery, flash SuperSU zip. Done. Rooted nexus. That simple.

I understand - and it is a shame - I agree that Samsung made some mistakes (at least as far as we are concerned) but they still know how to make a pretty incredible phone. Better than most -
The Note 5, despite the things we miss - is pretty incredible.

Incredible failure yes. Incredible phone no. They are eating Apples table scraps. They need to stick to their ways. The Note 3 was a huge step in the correct direction. Which I still have one of those. Note 4, not even a worthy upgrade.
And Note 5. Just total failure. With the note line I got a happy feeling with them I've had them all, except 5. And I will not. As it is just a failure.
Stop following Apple and be your own company.
I am still using N4 and on KK 4.4.4 My Wanam Exposed work great. And my hotspot meter never go up.
Why change when old thing work? No wonder I am a conservative.

Each to their own I suppose. I respect your feelings and passion - I guess I look at things differently but no matter. I personally like the note 5 but that is just me I guess. I am no where near as knowledgeable about code work, developing and that sort of thing as you are- and I guess I am easy to please. Regardless I wish you well and hope you find your next 'dream phone'.

Same to you buddy.
Learning all this is easy. Alot of just doing and if it doesn't work, return to previous state.
I started back with the Nexus One so I've been doing it a while lol.
And honestly, I don't think a company will ever release my dream phone. Every Phone will have sometime we have to live with, or don't like.
But that's why android prevails.
And exactly, you want big name devs, Nexus devices. The next batch of Nexus devices are going to be a huge hit. Assuming all leaks are true.

5.1.1 is actually a very nice upgrade for Notes. 5.0 was trash honestly. 5.1.1 they fixed a tub of issues.
At least on a nexus, the 5.1.1 was a very nice upgrade.
Granted I'm on 6.0 at the moment. Gotta love a nexus.

root access to S8 or S8+

does any know if s8 or s8+ can be rooted?
are there plans to do this or does samsung now block this?
some tools titanium backup et.al. need root access
Yeah I also want to root it. Plz anyone tell the method.

Won't be a method until it's released, then I'm certain the devs here will start cracking on it. Give time, the guys here are pretty good at what they do but there's still no guarantee root will be achieved (US models that is).

Root will happen
(If not I'll be suprised)
Look at s7 edge (exynos) if you want to have the approximate method.
Once twrp is released, I bet around the beginning of Mai, you will be able to install it using Odin (breaks knox, s pay, etc)
From there you'll be able to flash whatever you want (magisk, SuperSU, etc)
Edit:
Although I just stumbled over this:
Quote:
Finally, the Exynos 8895 also includes what Samsung is calling an “enhanced security sub-system with a separate security processing unit” for use with user authentication, mobile payments, and the like. Based on Samsung’s description this sounds a heck of a lot like Apple’s Secure Enclave, which would be a very welcome development, as in Apple’s case it has made their phones a lot harder to break into.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11149/...-8895-soc-10nm
yeah, saw on their website that encryption layers are going to be a lot stronger. I still think it'll be cracked. It's a large enough phone. just might take longer than normal.
Even root on Verizon's locked bootloader?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Yea root not enough for me, also need unlocked bootloader
geez the phones not even out yet. Gotta give the devs time to get there hands on the phone, then time to actually find a way to root it.
Would it be wise to right off the bat unenable automatic downloads of "Security Update: Improves Performance and Battery" in case someone finds a way to Root and they slip in an irreversible Firmware Update?
I bought this phone knowing it's going to be at least a year before at minimum root being achieved
if at all ,so I'm not getting my hopes up at all
This phone might be the straw the breaks the developers backs
I only needed a rooted phone for ARU unchained anyway ,but since the area51 got it to work unrooted
I can afford to wait

I hear you, preference I guess, I just like being up to date. I find that sometimes you are unable to use certain features without the updates.
I have the note 4 myself, and the only update that was a problem with that phone was MM, you could not downgrade from it. I have the AT&T variant so, no root access, and the current temp root that they have listed on the forums is not viable because your only temp rooted on experimental testing firmware.
The main feature you'll be missing out on is Bixby most likely, idk how good it will be or how bad, but you'll be behind that, apparently Bixby is not finished yet, and will not be shipped with the phone, at least not the complete version.

Haha, Buzby (as I call it) is the one INTRUSION I do NOT want!! Never asked for it, just forced upon us. This would be great, but I suspect the Phone already has Bixby embedded into it, what with all the hype (publicity for it) about it not functioning at launch I believe is a marketing ploy to bring attention to it. The part that is not being made available at launch is their end, nothing to do with needing an update for it to work (for those who blindly want it).
See, you watch, they will make such a big deal, like a major announcement when it is made to function and they "switch on their Bixby servers" it'll be posted all over the web like when the Note 7 fiasco (supposedly) happened.
Stop for second. And think. THINK. For yourself. That right there is invaluable advice. Bixby is not your friend.

Sprint LS997 variant updated to ZV9

I just got the update and for the first time it was nice to be up to date with security patches for a change lol... the previous updates were usually a month or two behind..
But the download didn't specify fixes or improvements, I wonder if anyone knows a way to find out if there are any, like at the sprint website with a change log.. I can't seem to find one as I used to find one with previous phones with sprint.
the update was about 650 mb.
and nobody to update it to zv9. Seems the rom community has halted.
hi guys my phone update to zv8 can i do downgrade firmware to zv6 or earlier ?
No u cant unfortunately
I'm almost willing to forego my root and hotspot for an updated phone at this point. Particularly because every rom I've tried has been a goddamn Bluetooth nightmare, and somehow I suspect aosp isn't going to be better because I've never had a phone run aosp without Bluetooth issues, and I've tried 9 phones.
Hey guys, this is a new phone to me (was rocking a release date Note 3 until last week), and unfamiliar with this forum specifically. (Not sure how I like sticking all the carrier variants in one section, but given the relative obscurity of the phone, I guess it makes sense...)
This seems like as good as any place to ask fellow Sprint V20 user w/o creating a new(b) thread unnecessarily?
I'm also on the ZV9, and it's been so long since I've had an unrooted phone, I had forgotten how much of a pain in the ass it is. True adblocking alone is driving my need for root here.
Is my phone rootable with this version of software? Is the Dirty Santa the way to go? Thanks in advance!

Ugh. Thanks for the response.
The phone is brilliant (after rocking the same phone for over 4 years, even last years phone feels like magic), but this might end up being a deal breaker for me.
Do you know off the top of your head what carrier models are still rootable?
My MNVO carrier (Ting) has other options of carrier models I can use, but T-Mob seems to be the most compatible.
Either way, thanks again for the quick response. ((I apologize for the non-searching, noobish questions, it's been a few years since I was an XDAddict, and still feeling my way around this new forum section.))

yeah, the unpaid work of XDA devs is a thankless job. I try to make donations to devs that have made my life better.
And I suspect with the relative obscurity of this phone, there won't be much more root dev'ing happening at all.
Might have to make a new device gameplan. And I really, really, never want to go back to Samsung.

I just got the v20 ls 997 also has zv9 preinstalled. I've been reading the forums and there is still active work on root for these phones. Thats all I know. Seems like they are trying to create a kdz or tot file since sprint never released one for this phone. Also there is a thread about creating a universal lg bootloader solution. I think there is some active work in the G6 forum and they talk about how it could help other models.... Just keeping my fingers crossed because I too haven't had a nonrooted phone in about 5 years and I don't like it. nope. don't like it one bit. The v20 is good but would be a dream if I could get root. heres to staying hopeful and keeping an eye on the resale market value.

This really is a 'best bang for the buck' phone right now, esp if one is on a budget, getting a slightly older device. (I was limited to 300 or less by the wife in my search for a device to replace my old Note3) Plus the removable batt, the SD card use, a jack, a great cam...
I don't even use root that extensively (not a flashaholic anymore), but for the 2 or 3 reasons I do, it's important.

I switch ROMs but really just being able to block all the ads! I didn't realize there was so many. And creating a back up shouldn't be so hard. Don't even get me started on all the background stuff apps are doing! And really there are so many great features missing from stock experience.

Yup. That's the NUMBER ONE reason for me. True adblocking.
Been doing my normal browsing for the last week on this unrooted device, and (long stream of explitives here) the amount ads that I had forgotten about are stunning.
Getting rid of bloatware would be nice as well.
Have to admit though, stock LG isn't horrible, compared to Samsung.

I've been using Ad-guard and does a pretty good job at blocking ads for the most part.

How to root the G970U?

What's the best guide to root the G970U? I'm finding guides for the Exynos variant but not so much for this one. Have even read that it can't be rooted or it isn't supported so far :crying:
As far as I know, the Snapdragon variant is not rootable. From what I understand, there is no way to unlock the bootloader. Samsung has this one completely locked down.

I see. Thanks for replying. I wasn't keen on coming back to Samsung but the form factor of this phone is almost irresistible to me. However, seeing as how development is almost nonexistent I think I'm gonna pass on this phone.

I would not recommend it. The form factor and specs are all great, although the battery is a bit on the small side. It has automated power savings features, except you can't control those easily with Tasker (you can with Bixby, but most of its profile triggers are pretty limited). And the power savings features appear to mute Google navigation when the screen shuts off.
But after being on custom roms since basically the beginning, One UI has been a gigantic pain to learn where all the settings are (and getting around not being rooted to do things I like/need). I could go on and on.
I put off upgrading for years for a smaller phone with decent specs. This was about the only option for me. I'd definitely recommend the Exynos version, but that's a no-go if you're in the US.
Too bad. I was just thinking about upgrading from my XZ1 Compact and this phone otherwise seems perfect:
1. NORMAL size
2. Fingerprint sensor on the side
3. SD card
4. 3.5mm plug
I can't root Samsung Galaxy S10e Snapdragon.
I already unlocked oem lock, kg lock.
But I can't find the right twrp for beyond0q. (no lte)
The office twrp is only beyond0qlte. It is no usable.
I flash TWRP_G9700_3.3.1-9.tar success.
but I don't know why I install magisk failed.

Actually, G9700 (snapdraon) variant of s10e is unlockable, but it is ture that few custom roms are available...
I would like to root just so I can have control over my phone, but I guess those Android days are over here in the US. ?
And it's sad because this phone is almost perfect. Having the fingerprint reader on the back and giving it a normal power button would make it so. Every company out there is a churning out overpriced phablets with a load of junk we don't need nor care for.
I also currently use a Sony, an X Compact. It's getting rather long in the tooth, but still works well. I have gone ahead and ordered a Snapdragon s10e, as there is really no other current phone in that size category. Hopefully between Nova Launcher, Tasker and Automate I'll be able to set it up to my liking. To be honest, I'm most concerned about the unusual placement of the hardware buttons: try to adjust volume without activating the fp sensor, etc. But I imagine I can get used to handling it differently. @andTab

I have a terrible problem hitting the Bixby and Volume keys when I try to press the power button. I had to use a re-mapping function to disable single & long press on Bixby.
Maybe I'll start a thread. I've managed to figure out almost everything I like to do, finally, with Tasker. A few things I need AutoInput for (which is far from ideal, unless it's a task you can do late at night when you aren't using your phone).
The single task I couldn't do satisfactorily was custom charging limits to try to save battery since I charge my phone overnight. That can only be done with root! Although this could maybe be accomplished by toggling the USB connection from charging to file transfer. But obviously that's not an option with wireless charging.

Please do start a thread. Once I get my s10e I can contribute what I've been able to do using the few tools I'm familiar with.

Got a link for that guide? I dont care so much for having a custom rom flasher. I just want to root.
I have a G970U1. I have been trying to unlock the bootloader for several days with no joy. I can't get "OEM Unlocking" to appear in Developer Options. None of the procedures I've found online to make it appear have worked. Anybody here have any idea how to do it? Or, how to unlock the bootloader by any means?
Thanks!!

Ehh?? I'm rapidly approaching a conclusion that Samsung has succeeded in making the bootloader on the G970U1 unbreakable. I'm really hoping for someone to prove me wrong. Please?

This answer is kinda condescending and not helpful. I get it's a pain to explain the birds and bees all the time, but it's even more of a pain to browse hundreds of non-answers on XDA to find info.
@wseverin he's basically saying that the G970U/1 doesn't have an OEM switch in developer settings because it's not *factory unlockable*. Generally, only the EU, by forcing telecoms and Samsung through legislation, have phones with unlockable bootloaders.
Truth is, there IS a way to root the US version of the 10e. You can find various threads on XDA of people referring to Telegram channels where they'll charge you money to remotely root your phone.
They do this through either various hardware/software dongle bundles, or ENG firmware. The S7 / G930U was rooted with an ENG firmware flash - at the expense of battery life.
In this thread they talk specifically about using ENG firmware to unlock the bootloader of the G970U: https://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f1...sm-g975-sm-g973-sm-g970-2570127/#post13639840
For US devices the only solution is by flashing an eng-boot + script if it exists for your particular device/version.

Whether or not that would work, I don't know. I've ordered a couple of S10e to test on. But I'm surprise that there hasn't been more work done to explore this solution on XDA. There used to be big bounties here to get root and bootloaders unlocked.

Thanks for these infos which haven't been shared on XDA yet.
IMO those with the knowledge to root the G970U think that they can make more profit by selling the rooting service for 100 or 200 $ per phone than to collect the bounty (although I think that they are wrong with this.)
I'm quite annoyed by the posts on XDA which advertise the paid rooting service (like "contact me per PM to get further infos"), although I can't really care as an Exynos user.
Has anyone found a way to root sm-g970U in 2021 for android 11? or its just not worth the effort
No, I just bought one used from amazon for 300 euros and they sent me a SM-G970U....now I have to send it back and ask for a refund and get a SM-970F somewhere (for similar price range ofc, I live in Italy)....i'm almost sorry, it looks new

Lol i know how you feel but dont because trust me if youre a root fan you arent gonna enjoy it tbh i sold mine like a few weeks after i got it and im just planning to get an Iphone and use it for the forseable future until i change my mind. If you love root dont buy the S or Note devices buy the j or A but if you dont like those i know because they are low end devices sometimes especially for a gamer..... so intead probably get a poco phone one of the newer ones with a snapdragon 860 or a xiaomi with flagship tier performance etc because i know xiaomi and google pixels there bootloaders can be opened and the warranty isnt voided permanently.... meaning once you unroot you get back warranty atleast thats what im sure ive noted.
