Problems with dark mode. - General Questions and Answers

Hey!
I am using Hex but I am not able to have all of my applications on dark mode. Some of the applications not having dark mode are TikTok and Snapchat.
I remember couple of years ago I didn't have this problem. I used to theme all the applications well without any exception. The problem is, I don't know what application I used (could be Substratum but it didn't work when I tried).
What I am asking is whether there is some way to turn applications which don't have dark mode to dark mode? I have tried with Substratum, Hex installer and various themes. They don't turn all applications to dark mode.
Forcing dark mode doesn't have either.
I don't know whether the problem is device, system or application related.
I am using S20FE Snap One UI 4.1
Thank you for reading!

You mean the force dark mode setting in Developper options?
That's the best you can do. If that doesn't apply dark mode in your applications i'm afraid there's not much else you do except wait for official dark mode in those apps.

Forcing dark mode is turned on in Developer Options. It doesn't help.

If that didn't do the trick I guess the only solution is to wait. Snapchat added Dark Mode on iOS, i'm sure it's just a matter of time before they make it to Android as well.

I hope so. It's still very hard for me to belive that there's no application able to theme. It's a simple white to black inversion.
I'm not judging. I don't know how I would do that but I find it strange.

Dark mode has become increasingly popular in the last few years and it blows my mind that popular apps such as Snapchat or TikTok like you've mentionned still don't have it in their settings.

I agree. We will see.
I think I used Substratum back in past to theme applications which weren't compatible but not even that is available now.

You could try some modded apps with black themed skins. I remember this was the way back in 2015., before dark mode and substratum.

updated to Oreo, menus now white, how do i get them dark again?

It seems they are now inverted from before the update. When I hit invert, the menus look correct, but the rest of the stuff is messed up, so that doesn't work.
How can I get my dark menus back without ruining the colors of everything else?
To clarify, I'm referring to the menus in settings and when I swipe down from the home screen.

yeah, that's Oreo's default theme. Lots of white. So what you are seeing is entirely expected and normal.... inverting the colors affects everything...
If you want to theme Oreo, you can do so, but you will need to be routed and install 'substratum' found in the play store... Oreo supports theming, but I think for now, you must be rooted (although, last I heard there should be a paid app available soon that doesn't require root)...
Also, there are lots of Oreo compatible themes for substratum, available in the play store.... I'm using a dark / pure black theme. Love it.
Good luck
You can try Substratum and Swift Dark/Black Theme
I still have this problem. It would be nice if Textra fixed the issue. If you go to Customize Look -> Screen Color -> Light, then the menu appears white with dark text.
But if you choose Dark or Black, then it's white with very light text.
Why can't Google just provide a setting to let us to choose either a light or a dark background for the menus? I don't want to root and I'm not going to buy a theme app. I don't want to "theme" anything else. I just want a toggle to choose either light grey or dark grey settings screens. Simple enough.

I'm sure they will down the line. theming/OMS is still very new in AOSP and stock Oreo and AFAIK, they are still ironing out support and their own dark theme...
if you don't want to root or pay a Buck or two to a hard working theme developer, than you are S.O.L.
If it is simple enough, feel free to write the supporting code and contribute to AOSP.... complaining in am XDA forum isn't going to make that support appear for u.

It's back on 8.1. If you have a black wallpaper it will detect this and theme everything dark. Download the developer image from Google. You can root it too, with a working SUhide.

My settings menu didn't go dark. Just the Google App and the notification pane. And Swift Dark is not quite there yet on 8.1
Oreo update HORRIBLE, knew in 2 seconds I would hate it when my notifications section turned to white background (you suck google) then noticed all kinds of thinks I didn't like. Apple updates made my phone worse EVERYTIME and now google is doing that. Simple stuff like changing background colors GONE and worthless stuff added to hug up the phone. Had my Moto for 3 weeks, first 2 weeks liked it, updated to moto oreo and now DON't like it anymore. I just wanted security patches not my OS screwed and ALL my setting gone, and why is this clock showing up again. all my setting which took forever to figure out and now reset back to what i didn't like, then add the horrible WHITE background garbage like the notoication window. I didn't want my nice UI screwed up. So I learned that like APPLE every Andriod update will be worse TOO. sad, don't like my new phone anymore, thanks for updating it to GARBAGE.

Hey!
I will pay! I will pay a developer! What apps do this?! I will buy them in a heartbeat. I am just as frustrated as OP and some other posters in this thread.
I AM NOT ROOTED ON AN HTC 10.
I spent all morning on a deep dive in the Play Store tinkering and installing several apps, and none of them addressed the actual issue of allowing the user to choose the color of the notification shade. I can't stand the white either.
Please help.
Andromeda, it's on the app store and also probably easy to find on here. Sorry I don't have a link at the moment, I'm on mobile. But the app is about 2 dollars and works great on my Moto z2 force.
Keep in mind you will need a laptop and some basic knowledge of turning on usb debugging in developer settings. It will need to be a Linux/Mac/Windows computer. Chromebooks are not supported as far as I know at this point.
See the xda thread for more details. Find it by looking up "Andromeda xda" on your favorite search engine of choice.

I went through that whole process this morning also. I kept getting a "run shell script" error with my Mac. It's real frustrating. I didn't want to do it, but I gave it my best shot, and I followed all the videos and directions, but no one knows what to do if "run shell script" error comes up.
Didn't work out I guess. But I gave it a shot. Still is so much to do just for the option to make an eff-ing black notification shade.

I have a few I've used that are unmistakably dark.
I think the reason is because I use Nova Prime as my launcher, so the themes aren't going to pick up on that and thus change the color of the notification shade.
Yes I too I'm pissed off at this new Oreo white look I like the look of my old build WTF why can't Google give us a choice why can't we theme just the God damn color I'm really pissed off now.
I'm so pissed off as well, can't get menus and title bars or even pop-up menus to be black. It was fine back on nougat 7.0
Now it's all white
I dont mind the Oreo update but like so many I hate hate hateeeeeeee the stupid status bar, its white. I wish they allowed up to change the color on the status bar like we can for the AOD clock. I have a background of nature and the sun is up there and I cannot read the clock, battery, connection status etc because its invisible on the wallpaper and I have a theme. I tried to use Andromada but it looks so confusing to use and you have to pay for it and the feedback from the public is bad
**** google for this. YOU HEAR ME??? **** YOU GOOGLE! YOU SUCK! FORCING WHITE BACKGROUND SCREENS ON US! MY EYES HURT... I"M GONNA CONTACT MY LAWYER!!

Facebook Dark Mode now out in the wild

My brother has it already and he didn't do anything, it just enabled on his app and there is no settings for it and I think this is account specific, like other features on Facebook not everyone will get the new thing all at once

His phone is Vivo V9, an update just released weeks ago to Android 9. Also, I don't think that Android version is one of the factors to get the dark mode. And I also forgot, his phone is in dark mode (system-wide) maybe that will be one of the factors to get the dark mode

It is server side. It's a waiting game for them to push it to you. Some have it already and the rest of us wait.
There's a setting in developer options to override and enable dark mode system wide. That setting enabled dark mode in all apps for me. It's called override force dark. Try it out. Some apps don't play nice with it but most do.

You have to be on the new stable version of Android 10, and have developer settings enabled. Within developer settings near the bottom of the list you should see overide dark mode.
If you use Textra, turning this setting on will screw up your chosen colors...so off it goes.

Oh well. I've had Android 10 (official / stable) on my Pixel 2 XL for a while now, Already have Dark Theme turned on in Settings / Display. Override Force-Dark in Settings / Developer Options turned on. Rebooted (several times). Still no dice with Gmail (and I'm also on the latest APK - 2019.09.01.268168002). I don't even see the Dark theme in Gmail settings - evidence of it at all in Gmail so far.
Sure seems like I'm still waiting for server-side update lottery to pick my number.
Force Dark Mode does not always give me nice results.
For example Facebook replies are in a white box with light gray text "you can not read the facebook replies"
Turned Force Dark mode off.

If you are rooted and have the latest gmail installed and you are rooted then try the following.
Go to data/data/com.google.android.gm/shared_prefs/Flagprefs.xml and change the line that says name="DarkThemeSupport_dark_theme_support" value="false" to "true" and save it.
So it should now read name="DarkThemeSupport_dark_theme_support" value="true"
Force kill gmail and you should have the option in your gmail general settings then.

I think it's only available to Beta users at the minute, unless someone else knows differently

Did they remove dark mode in the message app?

I switch from Google Messages to OnePlus native messages a lot and noticed that there is no setting for dark mode. I swear it was there last time I used it and it's not using the phone's dark mode theme. I'm on 10.3.3.GM21AA
10.3.3.GM21AA and 10.0.6GM21BA (EU)
Messages
have normally dark mode.

App drawer colour

Sorry if this has been addressed before, I am new to this device and have had a quick search and can't find anything.

Thanks. I was aware of that but, I just require black app drawer background to go with my black wallpaper, not system wide.
This has been possible on most of my recent devices and also on my wife's X2 Neo
Well I don't think it's possible to change the app drawer's background independently from the overall dark mode. But just to make sure I'd suggest you check back to your wife's Neo to see where the option is on that one and see if that works on the X2 Pro the same way. The OS should be pretty much the same anyway I guess. If there is no such option on the Pro then I guess there is no way to do this. IIRC I have seen other people ask about the same thing but to no avail...

There doesn't appear to be on. Think it's 'themed' with the wallpaper.
