updated to Oreo, menus now white, how do i get them dark again? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

It seems they are now inverted from before the update. When I hit invert, the menus look correct, but the rest of the stuff is messed up, so that doesn't work.
How can I get my dark menus back without ruining the colors of everything else?
To clarify, I'm referring to the menus in settings and when I swipe down from the home screen.

yeah, that's Oreo's default theme. Lots of white. So what you are seeing is entirely expected and normal.... inverting the colors affects everything...
If you want to theme Oreo, you can do so, but you will need to be routed and install 'substratum' found in the play store... Oreo supports theming, but I think for now, you must be rooted (although, last I heard there should be a paid app available soon that doesn't require root)...
Also, there are lots of Oreo compatible themes for substratum, available in the play store.... I'm using a dark / pure black theme. Love it.
Good luck

You can try Substratum and Swift Dark/Black Theme

I still have this problem. It would be nice if Textra fixed the issue. If you go to Customize Look -> Screen Color -> Light, then the menu appears white with dark text.
But if you choose Dark or Black, then it's white with very light text.

Why can't Google just provide a setting to let us to choose either a light or a dark background for the menus? I don't want to root and I'm not going to buy a theme app. I don't want to "theme" anything else. I just want a toggle to choose either light grey or dark grey settings screens. Simple enough.

I'm sure they will down the line. theming/OMS is still very new in AOSP and stock Oreo and AFAIK, they are still ironing out support and their own dark theme...
if you don't want to root or pay a Buck or two to a hard working theme developer, than you are S.O.L.
If it is simple enough, feel free to write the supporting code and contribute to AOSP.... complaining in am XDA forum isn't going to make that support appear for u.

It's back on 8.1. If you have a black wallpaper it will detect this and theme everything dark. Download the developer image from Google. You can root it too, with a working SUhide.

My settings menu didn't go dark. Just the Google App and the notification pane. And Swift Dark is not quite there yet on 8.1

Oreo update HORRIBLE, knew in 2 seconds I would hate it when my notifications section turned to white background (you suck google) then noticed all kinds of thinks I didn't like. Apple updates made my phone worse EVERYTIME and now google is doing that. Simple stuff like changing background colors GONE and worthless stuff added to hug up the phone. Had my Moto for 3 weeks, first 2 weeks liked it, updated to moto oreo and now DON't like it anymore. I just wanted security patches not my OS screwed and ALL my setting gone, and why is this clock showing up again. all my setting which took forever to figure out and now reset back to what i didn't like, then add the horrible WHITE background garbage like the notoication window. I didn't want my nice UI screwed up. So I learned that like APPLE every Andriod update will be worse TOO. sad, don't like my new phone anymore, thanks for updating it to GARBAGE.

Hey!
I will pay! I will pay a developer! What apps do this?! I will buy them in a heartbeat. I am just as frustrated as OP and some other posters in this thread.
I AM NOT ROOTED ON AN HTC 10.
I spent all morning on a deep dive in the Play Store tinkering and installing several apps, and none of them addressed the actual issue of allowing the user to choose the color of the notification shade. I can't stand the white either.
Please help.

Andromeda, it's on the app store and also probably easy to find on here. Sorry I don't have a link at the moment, I'm on mobile. But the app is about 2 dollars and works great on my Moto z2 force.
Keep in mind you will need a laptop and some basic knowledge of turning on usb debugging in developer settings. It will need to be a Linux/Mac/Windows computer. Chromebooks are not supported as far as I know at this point.
See the xda thread for more details. Find it by looking up "Andromeda xda" on your favorite search engine of choice.

I went through that whole process this morning also. I kept getting a "run shell script" error with my Mac. It's real frustrating. I didn't want to do it, but I gave it my best shot, and I followed all the videos and directions, but no one knows what to do if "run shell script" error comes up.
Didn't work out I guess. But I gave it a shot. Still is so much to do just for the option to make an eff-ing black notification shade.

I have a few I've used that are unmistakably dark.
I think the reason is because I use Nova Prime as my launcher, so the themes aren't going to pick up on that and thus change the color of the notification shade.

Yes I too I'm pissed off at this new Oreo white look I like the look of my old build WTF why can't Google give us a choice why can't we theme just the God damn color I'm really pissed off now.

I'm so pissed off as well, can't get menus and title bars or even pop-up menus to be black. It was fine back on nougat 7.0
Now it's all white

I dont mind the Oreo update but like so many I hate hate hateeeeeeee the stupid status bar, its white. I wish they allowed up to change the color on the status bar like we can for the AOD clock. I have a background of nature and the sun is up there and I cannot read the clock, battery, connection status etc because its invisible on the wallpaper and I have a theme. I tried to use Andromada but it looks so confusing to use and you have to pay for it and the feedback from the public is bad

**** google for this. YOU HEAR ME??? **** YOU GOOGLE! YOU SUCK! FORCING WHITE BACKGROUND SCREENS ON US! MY EYES HURT... I"M GONNA CONTACT MY LAWYER!!

My wife is really loving this theme! She does have 4 suggestions:
1. Make the locked screen button pink instead of the redish color.
2. In the Call log of the dialer, the phone numbers for each contact show up as orange. She would like them changed to pink.
3. Make the clock pink in the status/notification bar instead of the current grey.
4. In the default browser when you load up a webpage, she was wondering if the bar that shows the webpage loading progress could be Pink instead of orange? I told her this probably isn't possible, but then again it might be. I have no clue
The locked screen button color changed is the main thing she wanted, let me know if you need screenies for any of these. Your theme let me convince my wife that she should root her phone to customize it further, so thanks again!!

I just forgot a couple other things she told me. And one thing I think would be cool...
1. Change the 4g logo in the status bar to pink
2. When you select an icon, it has a orange border. Would be nice if it were pink
3. I was wondering how hard it is to remove the location icon. If all the other things are pink, it would be nice if that just went away. If that's hard to do, maybe make the pink so it fits in with everything else?
edit. Donation sent, really appreciate what you do! Trying to make my wife like android as much as I do.

4.4 transparent notification bar...what if you have a light background?

Given all the icons are now white and the notification bar is transparent, what if you have a light/white background? The icons are going to disappear into the background now?
I guess it will be semi-transparent or even customizable

Yes, it would be good if one could also change the color of the icons. I miss that aswell but at least google catches up to iOS on this one and various custom roms that already had this feature months ago,

That's what custom ROMs and themes are for. Who among us on XDA going to buy this device and use it "as is" right out of the box?
It looks to me like there will be a drop shadow to compensate for light backgrounds/icons. I like the transparency idea very much, actually.
This is always a PITA for us developers, assuming we want our apps to stay current with the appearance standards for the new versions of Android as they come out. Basically, I have to supply icons in differing sizes/colors for several versions of Android and in 4 different densities for each. So for a given notification icon, the app will probably contain about 16 icons to cover it all even though only one of them ends up being used on a particular user's device!
I'm waiting now to see if Android 4.4 will specify something different for the main app shortcut icons since it looks like the standard system icons have a new look.

Except that that is ugly, to me at least. You guys should be happy google does not for some reason start to use Comic Sans as the main script.
Comic sans is the most overused, notoriously evil font ever to exist. Even NASA and other institutes have been known to use it.

It's much more subtle than the example above, and it's quite well done. Even Samdung has found a way to do it in the S4. The drop shadow is just enough. Doesn't look ugly at all. It's actually the only pretty thing about Touchwiz, and it didn't arrive until the latest iteration.

Always On Display Themes

Hi Everyone! just received my new Galaxy S7 and as always trying to learn everything about it before i brick it!
So i've been messing with the always on display themes and for the moment all i could find are 5 new themes in the Samsung theme store.
I wanted to know what options do we have to manually change the AOD and to create our own theme..
Also location of files and resolutions would be nice if anyone knows!
Where did you find the always on display themes?

goto settings then top right Themes then more themes and from yesterday there is a sectioin "Always brighten your style with AOD" themes.. it changes all the phones theme but you can go back to the one you had and keep just the aod theme.
Anyone figure this out yet? I would love to pick my own image.
does anyone know how to add other "alerts" to the AOD screen? ie i would want to know if i had a number of hangouts messages or work emails. It only really tells you about missed call numbers and new sms (i mean who uses SMS these days unless it is to strangers or old people who don't understand hangouts??)

Looks like only Samsung's Phone, Messages, and Calendar notifications are available. For example, I like Google Messenger, but since SMS/MMS notifications don't make it to the AoD, I'm stuck with Samsung's Messages app (which looks nice actually).

I'd be interested in creating a dual clock, calender, & advanced notifications aod; how does one get started making android/ Samsung themes?
I want to keep my current theme and use the AOD from another theme. Has anyone figure this out yet?
i have only 6 AOD themes on the store. It whould be awesome if we can find more. And btw is this a feature that only s7 has ? If there is AOD mod for other phones mabe we can find themes from what they use ?
Functionality extensions would be better than almost useless themes.
i don't find the aod theme , maybe there aren't in france

You can just search "Samsung theme development" on Google and it should be the first site on the list. http://developer.samsung.com/theme-service
You have to apply, which entails getting Samsungs approval by phone and probably sharing anything they deem worthy of their own app store in terms of revenue. I don't think it's as easy as pie if that's what your hoping but I'd love to be wrong because Aod needs some work and it would be welcomed! I did some reading tho and it can be done if your driven to do so, I looked all this up as I wanted to create my own themes instead of waiting for what I may not find to come along. Looks like they have their own sdk you use and more info can be found at the link I provided. Cheers!

How to remove ugly drop shadows?

Recently got the Pixel 3a and love it. The only thing that bothers me, on dark wallpapers, the notification bar has a greyish backdrop under it. Is there anyway to remove this from both the home screen and the app switcher screen? Nova launcher seems to clear it from the home screen, but the app switcher still has it.
I can't attach photos to show, but just set a pure black wallpaper then look at the top of the screen.
Could you try using a different launcher? I think Nova Laumcher has a option to show/hide shadow on desktop.

Unfortunately, I don't have a solution for this, but I still wanted to add, that I had my 3a sent in for repair partly for this exact behavior.
I can't link a photo atm, but on a solid black wallpaper I could see ~4 brighter bars at the top of the screen, and something similar at the bottom (like LCD/LED displays suffer from clouding, but technically impossible on an OLED). I recommend you to turn on the screen rotation of the Pixel Launcher, because it follows orientation, therefore proving it's not a hardware issue per se.
Like you said, it doesn't appear on screenshots either, so it is beyond recognition of screen capture. Another software layer maybe.
Could you also carefully check dark greys and blacks of any video? Those colors seemed to be muddy for me, especially noticeable when using a black filter dimmer in CF Lumen.
Also, I might add that my Pixel didn't have this issue for the first months, it suddenly appeared and was even gone for one day before sticking.
So yeah, I guess I had this exact issue as well, let me know if you find out anything and I'll make sure to let you know how my repair went.

Yeah, you can see the grey gradient at the top. It's like a backdrop on the status bar. Yours looks a bit worse than mine though, as mine doesn't stand out as bad as yours. What that is called, is gradient banding. And I checked some dark videos for you and don't see it in videos. Also, my grey backdrop at the top doesn't have banding, it's a smooth gradient. You can google gradient banding to see examples of what it looks like.

Gotcha, I always described it as if a gradient got its color depth reduced, good to know there is an actual term for that.
And thanks for checking the greys. My whole display was affected by this issue, rendering darker tones what felt like yellowish/greenish, looking muddy.
And to reiterate, it became like this from one second to another, so if anything broke, you might be affected before noticing, because for you it looked like this from the start, from what I understood. I hadn't had a chance to compare it to another 3a, maybe that's something for you to check, just to be sure.
Still, I'll let you know when I get mine back, if the repair helped and if they found the culprit, or if I'm going crazy entirely.

Yes, just an edited Pixel Launcher.
Quick update as promised:
I have my 3a back and they told me they replaced the device instead of repairing it.
The banding is now gone (of course), but the drop shadow is still there, although barely noticeable. Hopefully the other suggestion worked out for you.
So thanks for telling me about banding and sorry for a possible confusion. Really glad to be back on team 3a though.

Anyway to petition to Google to NOT completely remove option for pitched black theme?

I swear Google may lose a crap load of customers if they completely remove this feature! At least keep the option of the two( greyish and pitched black) I understand the reasoning behind this but damn everybody is freaking different they shouldn't pull an apple unify their users like this. Come on Google!
Google cares only about change... forcing their crap down your throat.
And mining your data.
Personally, I like the change. Pitch black just looks hideous
There should definitely be options. The latest A12 dark mode theme color looks terrible in settings.. It's not TOO bad elsewhere I guess. I would absolutely sign a petition for that lol. And another one to bring back app suggestions in recents.

You should be able to control the black/grey/color gradient rather than have one size fits all jammed down you're throat.
Pure black can goof up web pages and make check boxes etc invisible.
A dark gradient uses only slightly more power; a negligible increase. My wallpaper is a very dark gradient with a very slight color accent to offset my icon pack.
I always wuved Kitkat's dark theme.
Google has rocks for brains; give them enough time and they will screw up everything.

I use one of their "high contrast theme" that locks in the messaging, phone screens as well as the keyboard colors.
Add a free icon pack from the Galaxy Store, then my own wallpaper, enable dark mode, and add the Good Lock family of mods. I use the home screen folder options and add my favorite Digi Clock widget.
It doesn't even resemble the stock phone and still uses the fast, efficient, extremely stable stock One UI launcher.
Apples make me want to puke, alternating with boredom and horror.
"But Debbie, pastels?!" No.
No material design crap drab here

I was planning on getting the S21 Ultra, but now I'm not sure. I don't have much faith in Google and their next Pixel, lol.
Android is everywhere right now.

No SD card ie data drive... a deal killer for me.
The 20U looks a lot better to me or the 10+ which is running on Pie. Q is not any upgrade to Pie and 11 certainly is not.
I wuv my N10+, fast, very stable and just fun to use even after a year and a half. Samsung and Google gave me very little incentive to leave this platform... so I won't.
Google dropped the ball and so did Sammy, perfect.

I definitely miss the theming store for Samsung. You can change the entire look. It's sad that Google, the creator of the 'customizable' OS doesn't have anything like that. At least without a 3rd party launcher and/or root.

I've tried a couple of 3rd party launchers but none were as good as the stock One UI.
Lol, one of those boot looped me twice, 2 back to back factory resets.
Without the Samsung mods I wouldn't be pleased at all.
Google is more like Apple anymore it seemsā˜
