Always On Display Themes - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hi Everyone! just received my new Galaxy S7 and as always trying to learn everything about it before i brick it!
So i've been messing with the always on display themes and for the moment all i could find are 5 new themes in the Samsung theme store.
I wanted to know what options do we have to manually change the AOD and to create our own theme..
Also location of files and resolutions would be nice if anyone knows!

Where did you find the always on display themes?

The Theme store has a banner for Always On Display. It seems to be anice actual theme that also themes the AoD.

goto settings then top right Themes then more themes and from yesterday there is a sectioin "Always brighten your style with AOD" themes.. it changes all the phones theme but you can go back to the one you had and keep just the aod theme.

Anyone figure this out yet? I would love to pick my own image.

does anyone know how to add other "alerts" to the AOD screen? ie i would want to know if i had a number of hangouts messages or work emails. It only really tells you about missed call numbers and new sms (i mean who uses SMS these days unless it is to strangers or old people who don't understand hangouts??)

Looks like only Samsung's Phone, Messages, and Calendar notifications are available. For example, I like Google Messenger, but since SMS/MMS notifications don't make it to the AoD, I'm stuck with Samsung's Messages app (which looks nice actually).

I'd be interested in creating a dual clock, calender, & advanced notifications aod; how does one get started making android/ Samsung themes?

I want to keep my current theme and use the AOD from another theme. Has anyone figure this out yet?

i have only 6 AOD themes on the store. It whould be awesome if we can find more. And btw is this a feature that only s7 has ? If there is AOD mod for other phones mabe we can find themes from what they use ?

Functionality extensions would be better than almost useless themes.

i don't find the aod theme , maybe there aren't in france

Interested in creating themes?

You can just search "Samsung theme development" on Google and it should be the first site on the list. http://developer.samsung.com/theme-service
You have to apply, which entails getting Samsungs approval by phone and probably sharing anything they deem worthy of their own app store in terms of revenue. I don't think it's as easy as pie if that's what your hoping but I'd love to be wrong because Aod needs some work and it would be welcomed! I did some reading tho and it can be done if your driven to do so, I looked all this up as I wanted to create my own themes instead of waiting for what I may not find to come along. Looks like they have their own sdk you use and more info can be found at the link I provided. Cheers!

Are there themes yet that look like aosp?

I've looked around but couldn't find if there are any themes that make the phone look aosp. I'm on the fence right now between this and the G4. Google now launcher can take care of the home screen and app drawer, but want the menus and notification shade to look aosp as well. Possible? Last thing I need to know before pulling the trigger. Thanks

Sorry thot, I should have specified a non root theme. Didn't Samsung open their theme store for user submitted themes? I'm going to be test driving the phone and I doubt they'd like if I returned the phone in 14 days rooted with the efuse tripped....
Oh no. Nothing like that. All samsungs themes are cartoon or hipster garbage or an outright advertizement.

How do i theme?

Not really needing or wantting to make a full theme, but i am trying to change the brown sms reply buttons and bar. Ive always hated the color from the s7e and wanna see if i can change it

Ohhh ok gotcha!! Bit outta my knowledge.
Yeah i would like to do some design changes myself but don't know how to access the UI to make the changes.

Samsung only gives access for the theme software to themers and the application process is a bit finnicky and you require a portfolio for them to look through. Maybe a different texting program? i personally use textra. Chomp SMS also has some theming capabilities

Recommended theme that looks like the stock theme but dark grey insted of white?

Or is it possible to change the white background without installing a theme? Thanks.
I am using material dark but with stock Samsung icons. Very close to stock this way

The only one I found in gray that looks decent is
http://www.samsung.com/global/themestore/index.html?appId=minuhome.SpaceGrey&SITE_CODE=us
Minu Space Grey.
But this does change the icons. I am using cobalt icon pack so I don't know which icon pack you can use to make them look stock.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated :good:
It's a shame Samsung removed the ability to change the colour of the SMS speech bubbles. There's quite a few fairly good grey ones let down by having hard to read SMS!

I guess it's to sell more themes? A fully customiseable skin would be nice though!
There is a stock one made by Samsung, its jet black, To get an instant preview, goto "Accessibility" "Vision" and enable "negative colours"
If you like this look, then do the following, first turn off Negative Colours.
The theme is called High_Contrast_theme, you need to be logged into your Samsung account.
then goto "Settings" "Wallpapers and Themes"
Then "Themes" (at the bottom) "Search" (at the top) for "High Contrast" download and apply this...
This makes the system menus black, and so for the phone, contacts, calendar, calculator and notification shade.
Then its like someone cut your circulation - made your world turn black !!
feedback your thoughts. After smashing the "thanks" button =)

Hi I have tested and i like this theme. For installation respected the process and ok. Thanks

Anyone willing to make a theme for the S8?

Recently my friends and I (all S8 owners) were going into the black style to save battery. We were looking for a theme that simply made the native apps black without changing the way the app looks at all (black instead of green on the phone icon but keeping the new S8 look). I don't know if Samsung doesn't allow people to make themes based off their SamsungExperience design, but I've consulted many people who would like to see this theme for the phone but it simply doesn't exist, and I do not have a computer capable of running any of the required software to make a theme (not to mention I have nill as far as experience in this). I was wondering if anyone would be willing to make a theme like this.

If you want somewhere to start, take a look at this thread. There are different mods all through the thread, not just in the OP.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8+/themes/substratum-inversion-ui-overlay-overlays-t3604341
I'm using a dark theme from the theme store, pixel nav bar, red with dark notifications and no battery in the status bar. No root needed, just install the apk and reboot, if you don't like uninstall through settings and reboot.

updated to Oreo, menus now white, how do i get them dark again?

It seems they are now inverted from before the update. When I hit invert, the menus look correct, but the rest of the stuff is messed up, so that doesn't work.
How can I get my dark menus back without ruining the colors of everything else?
To clarify, I'm referring to the menus in settings and when I swipe down from the home screen.
Google pixel, Android 8.0, stock

yeah, that's Oreo's default theme. Lots of white. So what you are seeing is entirely expected and normal.... inverting the colors affects everything...
If you want to theme Oreo, you can do so, but you will need to be routed and install 'substratum' found in the play store... Oreo supports theming, but I think for now, you must be rooted (although, last I heard there should be a paid app available soon that doesn't require root)...
Also, there are lots of Oreo compatible themes for substratum, available in the play store.... I'm using a dark / pure black theme. Love it.
Good luck
You can try Substratum and Swift Dark/Black Theme
I still have this problem. It would be nice if Textra fixed the issue. If you go to Customize Look -> Screen Color -> Light, then the menu appears white with dark text.
But if you choose Dark or Black, then it's white with very light text.
Why can't Google just provide a setting to let us to choose either a light or a dark background for the menus? I don't want to root and I'm not going to buy a theme app. I don't want to "theme" anything else. I just want a toggle to choose either light grey or dark grey settings screens. Simple enough.

I'm sure they will down the line. theming/OMS is still very new in AOSP and stock Oreo and AFAIK, they are still ironing out support and their own dark theme...
if you don't want to root or pay a Buck or two to a hard working theme developer, than you are S.O.L.
If it is simple enough, feel free to write the supporting code and contribute to AOSP.... complaining in am XDA forum isn't going to make that support appear for u.

It's back on 8.1. If you have a black wallpaper it will detect this and theme everything dark. Download the developer image from Google. You can root it too, with a working SUhide.

My settings menu didn't go dark. Just the Google App and the notification pane. And Swift Dark is not quite there yet on 8.1
Oreo update HORRIBLE, knew in 2 seconds I would hate it when my notifications section turned to white background (you suck google) then noticed all kinds of thinks I didn't like. Apple updates made my phone worse EVERYTIME and now google is doing that. Simple stuff like changing background colors GONE and worthless stuff added to hug up the phone. Had my Moto for 3 weeks, first 2 weeks liked it, updated to moto oreo and now DON't like it anymore. I just wanted security patches not my OS screwed and ALL my setting gone, and why is this clock showing up again. all my setting which took forever to figure out and now reset back to what i didn't like, then add the horrible WHITE background garbage like the notoication window. I didn't want my nice UI screwed up. So I learned that like APPLE every Andriod update will be worse TOO. sad, don't like my new phone anymore, thanks for updating it to GARBAGE.

Hey!
I will pay! I will pay a developer! What apps do this?! I will buy them in a heartbeat. I am just as frustrated as OP and some other posters in this thread.
I AM NOT ROOTED ON AN HTC 10.
I spent all morning on a deep dive in the Play Store tinkering and installing several apps, and none of them addressed the actual issue of allowing the user to choose the color of the notification shade. I can't stand the white either.
Please help.
Andromeda, it's on the app store and also probably easy to find on here. Sorry I don't have a link at the moment, I'm on mobile. But the app is about 2 dollars and works great on my Moto z2 force.
Keep in mind you will need a laptop and some basic knowledge of turning on usb debugging in developer settings. It will need to be a Linux/Mac/Windows computer. Chromebooks are not supported as far as I know at this point.
See the xda thread for more details. Find it by looking up "Andromeda xda" on your favorite search engine of choice.

I went through that whole process this morning also. I kept getting a "run shell script" error with my Mac. It's real frustrating. I didn't want to do it, but I gave it my best shot, and I followed all the videos and directions, but no one knows what to do if "run shell script" error comes up.
Didn't work out I guess. But I gave it a shot. Still is so much to do just for the option to make an eff-ing black notification shade.

I have a few I've used that are unmistakably dark.
I think the reason is because I use Nova Prime as my launcher, so the themes aren't going to pick up on that and thus change the color of the notification shade.
Yes I too I'm pissed off at this new Oreo white look I like the look of my old build WTF why can't Google give us a choice why can't we theme just the God damn color I'm really pissed off now.
I'm so pissed off as well, can't get menus and title bars or even pop-up menus to be black. It was fine back on nougat 7.0
Now it's all white
I dont mind the Oreo update but like so many I hate hate hateeeeeeee the stupid status bar, its white. I wish they allowed up to change the color on the status bar like we can for the AOD clock. I have a background of nature and the sun is up there and I cannot read the clock, battery, connection status etc because its invisible on the wallpaper and I have a theme. I tried to use Andromada but it looks so confusing to use and you have to pay for it and the feedback from the public is bad
**** google for this. YOU HEAR ME??? **** YOU GOOGLE! YOU SUCK! FORCING WHITE BACKGROUND SCREENS ON US! MY EYES HURT... I"M GONNA CONTACT MY LAWYER!!
