Question Crash and restart every 3 hours on September update - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

I have an Exynos S22+ which I got late April and it's always crashed and restarted since I set it up, especially after learning usage patterns. At first, I just thought it was software problems and didn't think much of it as it was max 2 times a day at worst then. It even stopped crashing for a few weeks after I did a clean flash of the August update through odin.
However, since last Sunday it started crashing again out of nowhere and ever since I updated to the September patch it reboots every 3 hours without fail especially once I start using it at the beginning of the day. I even did a clean install of the September update through odin and downloaded minimal apps and once again it rebooted at around 3hrs uptime as I was using it. I have literally just set it up and only changed basic settings.
6 months into security patches this shouldn't even be possible for such an expensive phone, that too after multiple factory resets and dozens of attempts at changing problematic settings. I am at my wits end with this phone and it has done nothing but frustrate me since day 1.
Any idea what I could do to fix this? Thinking of going back to august update so it stops annoying me every by crashing every few hours.
And could it be a motherboard or battery problem? And what is the likelihood Samsung will repair it if I tell them?

Sounds like a memory leak although I never experienced one using Androids. Did you check for that? What's individual app memory and ram usage look like from crash cycle start to finish?

Have you tried running the phone in Safe Mode for a while and see if is happening?
You said you had a clean flash of August patch....you made a factory reset after flashing or what do you mean? Have you restored apps/data/settings from backups after flashing?

So I put the phone into safe mode and sure enough a few minutes after the 3hr mark the phone crashed and rebooted itself out of safe mode. I guess that rules out 3rd party apps causing it. What do you think i should do now?
And the August patch I just flashed it without home csc which ended up factory resetting the phone. I backed up phone log, messages, contacts, clock and voice recordings which I restored from samsung cloud.

Not sure how I should analyse this memory leak could you explain a bit more? and is a memory leak serious? is there any way to fix it or is repairing under warranty my only option? as this happens in safe mode as well.

It's easy to find as it progressively uses more memory over the course of time until if large enough will crash the device eventually. Saw a buggy 3rd party app do it on an iPhone. Rebooting clears the ram and it would then restart its 3-4 hour countdown. Happens sometimes of Windows too. Almost always it's a poorly coded 3rd party app.
So simply look for an app that's memory usage steadily increases over time. You'll also see available ram space grow smaller and smaller. Unlike lame Apple, Android has better tools to help spot this.

It shouldn't be crashing like that. Take it back to Samsung and let them fix it while still under warranty

According to device care the ram hasn't gone above 5gb the times I've looked at it. But surely this shouldn't be happening on safe mode? 3rd party apps aren't even available with it but it still crashes after about 3 hours.

Seems like the only fix but until then the phone is unusable sadly. It's a shame such an expensive phone is a mess like this.

Hardware. Sorry... Sammy's been dropping balls like a drunk juggler.

My Exynos has started to restart occasionally . It's been fine since April but in the past month or two it's started to randomly crash and restart. I have a feeling it's a hardware issue.

Should i worry about one reboot on my Sensation?

Allright, i've owned my Sensation for several weeks now. Today, i sent a text, and as soon as i went back to the home menu, the phone turned itself off, and rebooted. It was a pi**-off, for sure, and now im worried.
I've done some research, and apparently (correct me if im wrong) it's because of too much RAM usage. However, i set the phone to notify me when free RAM is less than 50MB, and it never did. It just pulled an auto-reboot on me.
Should i worry about this? Is it normal; basically 100% guaranteed that it is because of low RAM?
Which leads me to this: I ALWAYS questioned all the things i had running at the same time. That's probably the only thing i don't like about the phone. Things start automatically. I have an EQ program, Groove IP, and the Music Player running at the same time. I don't understand why the phone won't just close apps if they aren't in use... Or at least if there was a more streamlined way of closing apps. Not going into Settings,Apps,Manage Apps, Running... That's pretty stupid, if you ask me... If there are alternate/better methods, i'd like to know them.
Back to the point, though. Should i worry about this reboot? And, what exactly is the cause/is it RAM usage?
Do not worry unless it becomes a persistant problem.
And even then do not worry because it can probably be fixed as long as its a software issue and not a hardware problem.
And free ram isnt a big deal with android. If you use it, you will use up all your ram quickly. But android will kick things not in active use out of ram when apps in use need more ram. Having free ram is actually a waste.

Okay, this thing about RAM is one of the biggest misconceptions I think a lot of people have regarding Android. Android doesn't use RAM like Windows. On Android, RAM usage is a good thing. It means that when you want to reload an application, it does it quickly. In other words, RAM unused is just RAM wasted on Android. And the other thing is, apps running in the background do not consume resources unless they also have background processes running as well. The other thing is that Android will automatically kill off certain processes when your RAM is low. So yea. You don't have to worry about RAM.
If you're worried about the crap that comes preinstalled with the phone, you might want to consider rooting and removing all those apps though.

Are you using an app killer to monitor your free ram?
That could easily be the cause. Sometimes those app killers will kill the wrong things and force a reboot.
You're better off dumping apps killers altogether. They work counter productively to the way Linux operates.

I guess i'll stop doing that...
HOWEVER, i still don't like how, for example, once i sign into Groove IP for the first time, it will stay signed in. Every consecutive time i go to use the phone again, it signs in automatically... After it wakes up from sleep mode, it will sign into Groove IP, and load things like the EQ program i use. I won't worry too much about the EQ, but other apps like Groove IP that are connected to some sort of signal, i don't want automatically running... Is it really not safe to just terminate a process in task manager?
Finally, on to the subject of reboots...Since owning the phone for...I don't know...A few weeks now? I've only actually turned it off/rebooted once...
Did that contribute to the random reboot? Was that not a good move, on my part, to pretty much always keep the phone on (although in sleep mode when not in use, of course...) ?

Yeah it could have. Try reboot the day every week at the bare minimum. Ideally, I'd suggest rebooting every 4 days or so.

If you are manually killing an app that's causing problems / pissing you off / or because you just don't like it's face, then no. That's okay. It's the automated app killers that kill everything as soon as you close them and then keep killing and killing like battle droids gone berserk that you want to avoid. It's that constant killing, which means an app restart and power usage, that will drain battery. And being unmonitored they can kill the wrong things that cause system instability.
But if you have 1 app that's bothering you you can kill it through the apps menu. That's normal.
The bigger problem is an app that constantly turns itself on like that. I hate those. There should be an option in the app settings to prevent that from happening. If there isn't, it's a bad app no matter how well it does what it's supposed to do.
You can use gemini app manager to change autorun settings for each app individually and autokiller memory optimizer to change the preset android memory limits so your phone automatically closes apps itself a little bit sooner.
Both are free apps but require root.
Gemini is really good. Certain apps start just because you received a text or plugged your usb in. Or your signal changed. I put a stop to that straight away!! Just don't change the settings for system apps.

Happened again... Alright, im being irritated by this restarting problem... My phone was just idle, i haven't touched it for hours. It was next to me on my desk, and i heard/felt the vibration upon restart.
Should i call my service provider for a replacement? This is ridiculous... I didn't get this thing expecting it to restart on me.

They are going to make you go through a lot of TS steps that you can do prior to calling them.
Have you downloaded any apps recently, say just before you had the problem the first time. It could be the fault of a buggy app, (Usually not likely, but is possible). Are you rooted or fully stock?
As for the Groove ID - look in settings, there may be a way to stop the auto sign in. Just an idea, I don't use it.
I'm not having anymore problems with Groove IP auto sign in. The "lite" version of the app doesn't have the option to disable it, anyway. I just don't run it, unless i need to use it.
This is the second or third time it's restarted. I believe it's the second time, since the 23rd of April, when i created this thread.
As far as rooted or not rooted, i'm not sure what that means. I think it's in regards to the SD card. No, i haven't messed around with it. It's stock. Other than adding some music to the phone. Nothing has been messed around with.

Also, one thing i want to add, that i find a bit strange. If i restart the phone, the display brightness will be noticeably brighter than what i actually set it to. It's almost as if i have to remind the phone of the brightness level i set in display options. All i have to do is go to the brightness setting, and touch the slider.
Is this normal behaviour? For it to be brighter upon startup? (even when reaching the home screen/whilst the main UI, past HTC logo screen)

It's a possibility that the app is causing the problem, though it is a small one. You might uninstall it and try it for a while, see if the device continues to reboot.
As far as your quirky brightness issue... It's technology. No two devices are the same, even if they have the "same" hardware/software. That almost seems like a fluke happenstance. Just a minor bug in your software.
You might want to read into S-Offing your phone and rooting it. Do some research into it. There are a lot of perks of rooting your device and going with custom ROMs. And if you ever have issues and have to get a replacement, as long as you can turn the device on and it's functional, you can always set it back to S-On with no root.
I've learned over the years, and this is just my personal opinion, stock ROMs are more likely and it seems as if they are meant to have more problems, however it's like anything else in the tech world, it's bound to deteriorate over time. It's how they keep you buying their product.
There are some really good guides that lead through the process step for step if you decide to S-off and root. And there are a lot of helpful people on XDA that will answer any of your questions.

Allright. Went to grab my phone just now, and saw the error notification. The old "abnormal reset" notification.
I'm going to assume it reset on its own once again. So....
Any insight into this? Why's is reseting itself? Hasn't happened in a while... but... still.

Is it just me, or does Lollipop kind of suck?

Ever since upgrading to Lollipop, my phone has become a huge pain in the ass.
Music will shut off randomly. I wonder if this is some kind of garbage cleaning behind the scenes, because Pandora/Music/Spotify will all just cut out at random.
The battery life is beyond awful. I can't last a normal workday anymore.
Performance sucks. Everything has a slight delay. Random freezes all over. Google play store takes absolute ages to get anything done.
I don't know. Am I alone?

Well...in my house I have a G3, M8 and Note 4 on Lollipop and do not see your issues. All the issues you mention seem to relate to transfer of data. Are you on wifi? Is the router going bad? Are you on LTE? how many bars? These all seem to be signal related issues, especially batter drain, not Lollipop.
My s5 is snappier since lollipop, all in all its better imho

I am in 100% agreement. Since the update, my phone (and my wife's GS5) is borderline unusable. It reboots randomly a few times a day, usually when I am actually relying on it for something. It is slow to do anything and the battery is just terrible now.
I know that many will say to do a factory reset (I already cleared the cache on both and it did nothing), but that is a huge pain for us due to our work email, which is painful to have cleared and add back on.

Well ... You could look at it like this: What is more painful to deal with? Random reboots, lag, and general unreliability? Or the investment in time it would take to wipe it clean and start from scratch? Maybe a corporate store could help you to transfer and set up what is really important to you if you need technical help or you don't really have the time to sink into it. Just a thought.
The ota uograde may cause a lot of these issues. A fresh install of lollipop either from stock odin image or a Sprint technician is recommended. The last if you're not comfortable saving/backing up your phone.
I would have to agree. I was stock unrooted and took the OTA update to OA6. My phone was not very stable and would sometime hang on a boot forcing a battery pull. I wiped everything and flashed the [STOCK ROM][5.0] OA6 Android L Deodexed and my phone has been great since then.

Yeah, that is kind of a good point. I just keep hoping that they will update or "fix" something that will make it magically work again so that I don't have to install my corporate crap again. Probably wishful thinking though.
Wish that I could be rooted like I used to be and just use Titanium Backup, but work killed our ability to root if we want to use our phone there (amazing that little trick they have used on us...they no longer pay for phones or service, but we have to abide by all their rules if we really want to work extra hours and go above and beyond for them...such suckers we are).
Bit of an update: I installed the OA6 Stock rooted rom and cleared all of Sprint and Samsung's god awful apps. The phone runs great now. I was going home with 7% battery life before, now it's 40-50% despite the exact same usage patterns.
I can't really say whether it was the factory reset that happened in the process, or the removal of all the bloat. I was so fed up with "HEY USE YOUR PHONE AS A REMOTE" and "CHECK OUT THESE AWESOME UPDATES FROM SPRINT" notifications that I didn't bother testing the phone before removing all the crap.
But anyway, anyone who is having problems...consider trying this. My knox is 0x0 btw, the mobile odin trick works.
I actually bit the bullet and did a factory reset. It was somewhat painful, but in the end, worth it. It is much better now. My only remaining problem seems to be an issue with Spotify...It eventually causes random reboots when playing music.
My side annoyance with the factory reset...Google needs to backup everything for us to do this. It was annoying to have some things done by Google, some by Samsung, and worse, some not done at all. The process could be done much better.
Hmm.. I agree with the lack of satisfaction with Lollipop. I have problems with bluetooth, slow system, crap battery life, random crashes, loss of features I liked on KitKat, etc. I did use a clean, stock image and ran it unrooted for a while, but still had problems. I just finished rolling back to KitKat and will wait for 5.0 to be more stable before trying it again (or until the S6 comes out)

exactly after one year warranty just expired the phone became painfully slow
it was a brand new phone sent from samsung as a replacement for my broken phone replaced under warranty
had zero problems for a whole year and i mean zero like no issues with speed or freezing at all
never dropped or dipped in the water to test the water resistance
always in a case since day one. no crazy apps. actually same exact apps that i have on all my phones.
no new apps were installed before slowdown
i already deleted some apps. cleaned up app cache individually and reset cache from boot screen
tested in safe mode and still slow
im not sure if the update was installed recently or not but the slowdown happened about 2 months ago. was there a tmobile update at that time?

but this is the third phone that did this.
galaxy s5 that i also bought brand new for a year was well maintained and had no problems
that phone actually started lagging really bad and shutting down multiple times a week or restarting....
before that galaxy s3 did same thing. after exactly a year it became ridiculously slow for absolutely no reason
i install all the apps i use right out of the box. change all the settings to what i want and dont really make any changes after and it usually very stable for about a year
is there an app that i can use to troubleshoot?
or an app that will show me what component is slowing down the system in real time?
obviously something is slowing down the OS, theres gotta be an app that can trace the faulty app or file or component

Have you been able to view the CPU activity and the RAM allocation?
I am not sure how to do this, but if possible, it might reveal what is happening.
I would try disabling some of the applications one by one. First suspects would be:
1. Facebook
2. Google Play Store.
3. Youtube.
Disable one, then try the phone. If still the same, disable second and try etc.

How is your device storage. Once you use more then 50% device storage android starts to lag. It's an issue with the OS.
device storage has always been about the same since brand new. which is about 80% on average.
doesnt safe mode disable all non stock apps? i tried safe mode with same result
windows has a resource monitor that helps alot but i dont know if android has any monitoring app that could help troubleshoot this
Samsung devices are known for getting laggy over time, try a different phone next time, in the meantime, do a factory reset and start fresh.

This is very suspect to me, but I am only a beginner.
Given zelendel's post about (re 50%), I would investigate further. Did you note his credentials?
What does all that data consist of?
What is the total storage capacity of the phone?
Perhaps some of that storage capacity is used as "swap" memory? Just guessing...........I am extrapolating Linux terminology here.
about 10-15 gigs of that is music/videos for airplane or when i have no internet. its been there since i got the phone
other things come and go like downloads documents videos images
im surprised theres no apps to troubleshoot the phone lagging when theres so many people having that problem and the best solution is to just reset the phone. which should be the last resort
if resetting the phone works most of the time then there should be an app that could look for conflicts as it runs in the background.

Depending on the amount of storage in your device that could be a lot.
Resetting the device wipes things. You really can't find an issue if the only issue is storage space. So here is a test. Remove stuff from your device. Give yourself a clean start and then go from there. Adding stuff slowly until it slows down.
I have had dozens of devices and the only time they ever got slow was due to getting low on phone storage.
This even encludes a 5 year old Samsung that I have that is as fast as the day I got it. Mind you there is nothing on it but some games for a kid. I even disabled all of Samsungs crap they install that slows a device down.
Could also be stuff acting up in the background
Run a log cat and see if anything is hanging.

deleted few apps and moved alot of them to SD card and cleared cache for those too

but as soon as i switch to data it works
i have to restart the phone alot now and close all apps multiple times a day to get them to work
also running safe mode had no effect on speed
i dont know when the last update was from tmobile but it might have been due to crappy update im not sure at this point
i got the phone last end of summer and it worked flawlessly every single day up until last 2 months exactly when warranty expired

Hi, I was a Samsung user too and faced the same problem.
I went through various threads which gave me multiple solutions: rooting, removing bloatware, cpu monitoring and many more.
None of that worked. The phone was so slow that it was not usable.
Ultimately I had to throw it and buy another phone.
Then I noticed this is not just me, all Samsung users face the same problem even the flagship users.
I swear I'll never buy a Samsung phone and never let anyone buy one.

Pixel 3 hangs for 15-30 seconds when switching apps, typing

I know there are memory management issues with this phone; what I'm not sure though is if the behavior I'm experiencing is just a manifestation of this well-known problem or another issue.
Since I got the phone a month ago, after some period of use after rebooting, simple actions like switching between two apps can cause the phone to hang for a long time - usually 20 or 30 seconds. The phone isn't completely hung - I can still go back to the home screen, and do some things, but whatever app I tried to switch to will be non-responsive for this whole time. Eventually, it will just start working again.
Other times, typing using the google keyboard will get stuck - that is, I can still type, but nothing shows up in the field where the text should appear. After a while it will suddenly "catch up" and everything I typed appears.
These two issues both seem to start happening around the same time, so it seems memory use related, but the amount of time involved seems very excessive for swapping.
I can fix this just by rebooting, but it always comes back after a while. I suspect it's related to how many different apps I've loaded and not just time of use, though, since sometimes it won't happen for a day or two, but it always happens again at some point.
I removed a bunch of apps that were migrated from my old phone (a Motorola Z Force), too, to try to eliminate a badly-behaving app, but I never had any issues like this on that phone, and it didn't make any difference.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Or does it sound like a possible hardware problem? I don't want to swap the phone unless it's clear this is abnormal behavior. Thanks.
It's abnormal behavior. My first thought is it might be related to a balky network or intermittent connection. Just a wild guess. Do you see the same issue in airplane mode? Also, if you check battery or cpu usage is anything hogging resources?

I've used the phone in exactly the same circumstances as my prior phone (and other devices) so I don't think it has to do with network connectivity; but next time it happens I'll try switching to airplane mode just to be sure. There's no visual indication of a network drop (e.g. wifi status icon). I haven't checked for anything hogging resources during these events, and generally I'm not having any battery life or performance problems. It's just switching apps that brings everything to a standstill for a while, and then it works fine again.

Had a 64gb Pixel 3 when it was first released and it manifested the issue with the random hangs and freezes. I decided it was too buggy and returned it.
A month later got a 128gb Pixel 3 on the gift card promo and it is exhibiting the same issue as the OP and my original 64gb unit.
Doubtful it is a hardware issue since this is my second one with the same issue.
I have tried factory reset and removing any un-necessary programs on both, but the condition still persists.
Both phones were on Fi.
If the January patch does not fix the issue it will be time to switch back to iPhone.

Mine's 128gb (Verizon). The January patch looks trivial so not expecting any change here...
Not going to switch to iPhone but troubling that you have had this with two different phones. At the same time, pp seemed to think this is not typical behavior, and if it's a common OS issue then wouldn't a lot of people be talking about it? I'm not a crazy power user or anything, I never play games, pretty much use Waze, whatsapp, camera, facebook (lite), spotify, etc... really pretty standard apps.
I wonder if there's something unique to us that could be involved here? I'm not using any apps I wasn't using on my old phone, but I also had Oreo before and not Pie, so not a direct comparison. When I first set up my phone, though, all my old apps were migrated, including some Verizon bloatware I couldn't delete from the old phone. Is it possible that apps that were automatically migrated (but later deleted) could have left something behind that's causing issues with PIe?

I have have been on Google phones since Nexus 4 and upgrading like a good consumer every year.
Like yourself I am not doing anything crazy and have the run of the mill stuff like FB, Snap, kik, Whatsapp and IG. The only thing out of the ordinary I have on the phone is Cerberus and BlackBerry email.
Apps don't get migrated so that is not the issue. When you setup a new phone or transfer, some of the data is moved, but the app is re-downloaded from the app store.

Right - but it installed -everything- I had on my old phone including some Motorola & Verizon apps, which I then uninstalled (but maybe even missed some). Just thinking it might be possible that something hardware-specific to my old phone got installed on the pixel. In theory shouldn't matter but there seem to be so many nuances to Android, particularly across major releases, that I wondered if this could have been involved in the problem.
Anecdotally, it seems like it's been happening less often over time. I haven't had it happen in a few days, though I installed the update yesterday so I'm within 24 hrs of a clean boot now.

I've been having exactly the same issues for the last couple of days. Have just done a factory reset but the problem persists. The biggest issue is that when the phone is locked it seems to freeze as well and takes about 15-20 secs to unlock. Also if you phone it while its locked (and frozen) the incoming call isn't acknowledged (no ringing !) until after its unfrozen. Looks like I may have to return it and get a different phone !

More than a few people have been having issues with their Pixel 3, but I've yet to experience a single issue with memory management or slowdowns. In fact, I've found the Pixel 3 to be a far smoother UI than the iPhone X on the newest versions of iOS. Maybe I got lucky, but I'm more inclined to think it's about use. Just like my desktop operating system, I start from scratch every time I do a reformat, reset, or upgrade of a device. I can see there being issues with migrating old data. I'm also a fairly light app user; I've got around 100 apps in my drawer, most of which are Google apps or banking apps. Are the people experiencing these slowdowns installing a lot of things or running more resource intensive apps like Facebook? Not to say you shouldn't be able to do that with your phone, but I'm curious how behavior differs in our situations.

OP here, so more than a week since the February update landed and I have not had this happen since then. I'm kind of shocked, honestly, and keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, but so far it looks like something they did fixed this.
The only other significant change I made was to uninstall the Facebook Lite app, a few days ago, but I've used that long before I had a Pixel 3 so doubt it's related. So... :fingers-crossed:!!

Maybe I should give Pixel 3 a try. Tried P3 twice since October and it was a phenomenal laggy mess specially under load ... My Pixel 2 had its ups and downs, specially with the Pie release. Took them 3-4 months to 'get it right' so I'd expect Pixel 3 to be no different.
I was experiencing some lag and short freeze (2 to 7/8 seconds) with my pixel after the latest update.
I tried a factory reset with little hope but it seems it did the trick for me. No issues ever since.

Question Phone sluggish / videos do not play after a full charge

I have noticed this happening for the past two to three days now, where after charging my phone to 100% and taking it off the charger, the phone feels sluggish overall in some apps and any videos - be it local on device videos shot from my camera, videos that I have received via WhatsApp, Instagram videos and reels or YouTube videos and shorts do not play at all. I just see the video buffering or loading (the circle keeps going round). Only thing to fix this is a restart. I am not sure what is causing this behaviour but it is very strange and ridiculous. I bought the Pixel thinking pure Android from Google would be the best UX but this sucks tbh.
Anyone else facing a similar issue and any tips on what the reason could be? I have been trying to get in touch with Google support but could not get through to them today, will try again tomorrow.
Edit: it is now happening randomly throughout the day and the camera app is almost frozen during such an episode if I try to use it.
Can you use something like geekbench app to profile the phone when it's at like 20 % after a restart vs 100% no restart?

Here are the screenshots of Geekbench scores. Today's scores are from when the phone was exhibiting this strange behavior of videos not playing.
Unfortunately, this has started happening randomly through the day (and not necessarily after a full charge). I have seen that even the camera just freezes or is non responsive during such an episode. So I guess it is some sort of video driver issue?
I restarted the phone in safe mode and checked but don't see this issue happening in that mode. I've uninstalled apps that I've installed over the past few days. Still not sure what's the issue.
I checked with Google support yesterday and they told me to check in safe mode (done) or else perform a factory reset. Not sure if paying 1000€ for a phone only to factory reset it within a month for a wired issue seems justified. I have the same apps on my 6 year old One plus 3 and face no problems whatsoever apart from the phone being slow.

Hey, I don't mean to be a stickler here or tell you what kind of experience to have.
As a guy who deals with a lot of tech issues, I would recommend a Factory Reset along with google.
Things happen, and not EVERY device is perfect, try not to be done with the phone over resetting. I know it can be a pain but all devices need it from time to time. I work in IT and you would not believe the number of times resetting fixed an issue.
The time for concern is when that does not fix the issue or you are having to do it across multiple patches of a phone.
