New WiFi connection issues with old CM ROMS - General Questions and Answers

I recently fired up a Nook Tablet running CM 12.1 and found to my surprise that it would not connect to my router. I am 96% sure that when the router was recently replaced by ATT, I turned on both of my Nook Tablets (and everything else in the house) and got them set up on the new router, SSID, password, etc. Everything was fine.
But now it's not. I should add that I have a variety of relics with old OS that have no trouble connecting to the router (an old KitKat sim-less phone, Nook Simple Touch e-readers, etc.) as well as more current devices (also no problem there). It's just these two Nook Tablets, one with CM 12.1 and the other AOSP 7.0.
I took the tablets to the local library and had no trouble connecting to their WiFi (of course, it's not secured...).
I can see the tablets trying to connect to the saved router (yep, I did "forget" it and start again) but then they just give up and try again and again periodically. I captured a very lengthy and mostly incomprehensible logcat of such a session but I can't see anything that jumps out and says "this is the problem!!!".
Any ideas? (I've thought about wiping the tablets--I have backups--and starting from scratch...I'd rather not...)

Try booting to recovery mode and wipe the cache partition, just in case there is cached data causing issues, but do not factor reset.

Thanks for your response. I should have tried that (if I didn't already) so I did this morning to be sure, with a known working-at-the-time backup of the CM12.1 ROM. Still no dice.
I got to thinking about the possibility of ATT sending out a security patch or something and then thought about an old repeater I had in a closet (not so old that it was not set up with the new modem). It's one of those WWRT flashed Linksys modems. Ancient. Was working the last I tried, but I thought maybe it would not be able to pass along whatever potential security issues the newer ATT modem/router was exhibiting with this ROM.
I was right. It connected right away to the repeater, full internet access, etc.
Here's what else I know so far. I have a handful of other ROMS from CM11 up to LNOS 14.1, all backed up from a known working configuration. It just happens that the CM 12.1 ROM gave the best performance on the tablet (admittedly near the edge) and that's where I settled eventually.
All of the backups, when restored, connected to the new ATT modem without issue.
So....I can only guess that the developer of the CM 12.1 ROM left something out which hasn't shown up until now. Interesting that even the CM 11 ROM connects without difficulty.
Now I need to decide what to do with the 8 GB tablet (the 16 GB version running AOSP 7.0 magically works after many an attempt to connect to the ATT modem). I hate to go back to CM 11 because many websites don't display properly with available browsers and there are other SSL issues as well.
Maybe take another look at CM 13....or wait. I won't have this ATT modem forever. Perhaps the tablet will work again with some other setup (as it does with open networks now).

You might try flashing different versions of modem for your tablet to see if any of them work better. Yeah, it sounds like something might have changed in CM but I doubt it is anything the ROM developer did, it is more likely something that the CyanogenMod team changed in the CM source code. I had a Straight Talk Galaxy S3 years ago that didn't require a SIM to be used on the Straight Talk network but when flashed with CM ROMs, it wouldn't connect to mobile data or be able to send MMS without a SIM inserted, this was around the same time as your ROMs were built. The 4.4 ROMs worked without the SIM but the last few builds of 4.4 and above ROMs would not work without the SIM. This was a result of something that the CM team changed in the device's RIL(radio interface level).
You may be facing an issue that is also caused by something they changed in your later ROMs. It could also be because things have changed in the networks that we use today, different bands, network types and protocols.

Can't keep wifi connection and other issues

the G tab won't hold a connection for more than 30 minutes. It won't connect at all with my router unless it's within 8 feet. I'm running stock TNT, but had been running VEGAN 5.1.
I also can't seem to get Clockworkmod to work at all now. I cleaned everything I could when I first started having this issue when running Vegan. Tried to reinstall CWM, and now i'm just getting the cardboard box and arrow no matter what I do.
Halp.

Try installing Bekit's CWM v.08 from this page.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245
Then I suggest reflashing the ROM of your choice with Wipe Data & Cache.
It may be you have a corrupt installation.
VEGAn 5.1 gives me no issues with Wi-Fi connection whether im 5ft away all the way across the house.
actually I've done that. I can't seem to get CWMOD to run. I do everything like I had originally, but now when i do power and + volume, I get the Gtablet screen and not CW.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892090
Follow that and make sure your command file is there and correct. It deletes after the first boot. If you are powering on with power/vol+ and not going into cwm then its not installed
Vegan 5.1 installed. WiFi is stil
scanning.. connectin.. disconnected.
if i'm within feet of the router it will obtain the IP and connect. Then just crap itself later.
have you tried rebooting the router and are you using wep?
I've really done everything. tried several networks, rebooted router(s) wep wpa, everything. wifi has just decided to stop working on my tablet. TNT, Vegan. Doesn't matter.
I'm exchanging it.
yep...I would...sounds like a bad wifi
Unfortunately it's been just over 14 days since I purchased it and Office Depot will not exchange items after 14 days.
Great.

Have you tried connecting to a different router other than the one that's giving you issues with the gtab? Have you been able to tether the gtab to an android phone that supports it?
Perhaps tried to connect to an open connection other than your own?
I remember having that issue and it wasn't the gtab perse but I forgot I had set the security on my router to only allow devices with the mac addresses that I entered into the security settings of the router. So even though I was able to connect it would disconnect me shortly after obtaining an IP address.
If you're able to connect to another router you would know for a fact that it's not your gtab but the router you're trying to connect with.
I've tried connecting to a number of routers both open and secured. Same issue and it has progressively gotten worse. I simply cannot connect at all now. There were some issues with connectivity since day one but now it is all but unusable.

Oy Vey, I'm not entirely sure wifi hardware that was once working even if only sporadically can go bad but you mention the grace period for return has passed but it may still have warranty available from viewsonic available to you.
Perhaps you should follow proceedures to return the device back to out of the box stock condition and put in for an RMA from viewsonic.
found out I was on my last day of being able to return, unlike I thought. Exchanged it and got a new tab. Everything about this one is better. Screen, camera angle, CONNECTIVITY.
Just a bad unit I guess. Newer build date by over a month.
I've seen a similar issue, but it only seems to relate to routers broadcasting WEP.
At work they still use WEP - shocking I know - but they do...anyways...it no worky there.
but at home I"m WPA/WPA2 and it fires up just fine...

please help me to understand what is going on

Basically this is a WiFi issue with all CM10/AOKP fresh installed after Sep the 11th.
I said Sep the 11th because that is the best refference I can find.
If I flash any CM10?AOKP based ROM released after that date I lose wifi on 1st reboot after initial setup. To get the wifi working I have to toggle on the wifi manually, or toggle off and then on or reboot. I could not find a pattern. At the end the problem is that the wifi does not start on boot by itself. Let me be very clear here. Fresh flash.
Now here is the strange thing. I have several nands for Paranoid, CM10, SlimBean (unfortunately none for AOKP), taken pervious to that date and if I dirty flash to the last release everything works fine. No problems with the wifi.
The stock ROMs all of them work fine, fresh or dirty flashed.
I googled the internet and checked xda and other forums. I found just couple of similar situations but with no working solution .
One of them says that you have to odin back to stock, connect to wifi and then flash CM10. I did that and no go.
I tried different routers in different wireless configurations, same problem. Static ip and stuff.
Sometimes I get the wifi network "not in range" or the toggle for wifi in setting semi off or on.
If this is a wifi driver problem then:
1. can I get an old CM10/AOKP driver injected to the new releases?
2. why when I dirty flash the old driver (present in nand) does not get overwritten?
3. did you see anywhere a similar problem or it's only me.
Thanks in advance for your help.
same issues here on any build of aokp. wifi works until after a restart. i get the out of range error or wps failed. i have to shut off wifi and turn it on to connect. really annoying. funny thing is on ics i have no issues with wifi auto connecting.
ideas? Kinda weird only a small handful of people have this going on.
I've noticed WiFi issues also while on cm10. Lately I've noticed WiFi becoming better in more recent nightlies. However I've been doing clean flashes, and not restoring any system settings from backups. Even unclicking the boxes from the initial startup that allows Google to backup and restore settings on the phone. I'm assuming that possibly some setting/config is being restored causing the issue... just a thought

Nope i dont restore anything and always do a fresh clean install. If i had to guess its a buggy wifi driver that causes issues with certain routers. That would explain why very few have our issues. I guess for now ill stick to beans rom and wait for the jb ota.
Its worse than i thought as i have this issue on all the aosp varients. I just tried cm10, all aokp, liquid and slimbean. Same wifi error. I nandroid back to beans ics rom and everything is fine. Its got to be a wifi driver issue. There has to be more than myself and the op having this issue.

[Q] Strange Wifi/Mobile Data Issue

Ok so I have two of the universal Moto G LTE . We were running the unofficial cyanogen 11 perfectly for afew months and on one phone became unable to connect to our home wifi, shortly afterwards the other had the same issue. Flashed a LP rom but wasn't suited to the stability of it atm so settled on Slim-peregrine-4.4.4.build.9.0-OFFICIAL-8310 with Slim-Addons-full_gapps.4.4.4.build.9-20150107, and the issue was gone. However on the other phone after a wipe and clean install of the same rom and gapps the issue persisted and further would not connect to the wifi or it mobile data though still has perfect signal for calls and mms.
I'm no tech wizard but I have tried the following;
PHONE BASED
Flashed every kernel and every rom in the Moto G LTE forums (Yes ALL but not every combination)
Tried variations on the airplane mode
Fastboot erase modems1&2
Reverted to stock RETUS_XT1045_4.4.3_KXB21.14-L1.23-4_cid9_CFC.xml.zip via manual mfastboot cmnds & MotoFlash
Changed filesystems
Connected via direct IP (still no internet though it says connected)
ROUTER BASED
Reset it (Duh)
Tried a different router
Enabled/Disabled MAC Filtering
Once I realized the mobile data was out to though stopped messing with the router.
Currently it is running the above mentioned SlimKat and works wonderfully except no mobile data even with the correct APN info and fails to authenticate wifi. I'm at a loss, did the phones ethernet chip or w/e it is die maybe?
I'll provide any logs asked for if I can get them... It's my wife's phone that is having the problem meaning I really need to fix this or suck it up and buy a new one. Appreciate any help in advance and if not I understand, thats the game when messin with this stuff as a novice.
As an update, upon the monthly renewal of the data mobile data is still working. Just the WiFi is still not working.

Lost LTE and internet access on some Wi-Fi networks after flashing Cyanogenmod

This is the first help post for anything tech-related that I've ever posted- I'm usually good enough with Google to fix my own problems, but this one has me flustered.
Until yesterday I was running DigitalHigh's GPE ROM but decided to give Cyanogenmod another try after some persistent lag issues. Everything went fine during the install until I noticed that I was stuck on 3G no matter what I did- airplane mode, reboot, clear the cache, try to update APN settings, etc., nothing helped. Additionally, while the phone will connect to my home wireless network, it has a ! next to the connection symbol despite my being able to use the network with my laptop. The funny thing is, this only happens with some networks. Neither my home network nor the network at work will give me internet access, but if I plug an ethernet cable into my laptop and create an access point that way, I'm fine.
Here's what I've tried so far after scouring these and other forums:
-Reverted back to the previous ROM
-Flashed new firmware
-Flashed two new kernels
-Tried every different APN setting I can think of
-Popped out my sim card, waited a bit, and popped it back in
-Rebooted countless times
-Cleared every cache I can think of
-updated TWRP
There's probably more that I can't think of off the top of my head as well. Does anybody have any idea what on earth has happened to my phone?

Wifi problem - on-off and no wifi hotspot, phone restarting - Please HELP

Hello everyone,
me and my wife enjoy our htc U11, but few days ago mine start playing up - wifi have difficulties to connect its doing like on-off-on-off, and after while connect to router, doing same thing at work and home too, and I really can't use any longer wifi hotspot, and phone restart at least once a day, not very happy, but today my wife experienced same problems as I have few days, must say both phones bought in UK from two different companies and different times, both are on stock rom, completely standard phones, I am only using modified camera apk, can anyone give me advice what it could be?, I do not have even Facebook or Twitter account, so can't be related to these apks. Was going to do hard reset tonight, but after my wife told me she got same problems and she use her phone very little, I am not sure if hard reset will resolve problems. I will welcome any help...
Forgot to say we are on 2.33.401.10
Many thanks..
Settings>more>data usage>network restrictions>check to see if the network has been restricted.
Settings>more>three dots (overflow menu) and hit "reset network settings"
Have you reset the router, checked the network settings are correct (if you use dhcp just reset your router).
If the ssid has spaces or characters/symbols then this can cause issues.
I have personally known routers that use signal binding to run at speeds incompatible with some devices. Especially those with 1gb interfaces. *cough netgear*.. Falling back to a basic setup helps significantly.
A factory reset will probably solve it but you'll lose your data. That is the last ditch effort.
Hi, what is latest update for this rom?, as we can get no ota update, if you point me right direction, will be great, and I will update at least one phone, and see difference. I already reset home router, I reset network setup on phones, wipe cache on both phones, still problems, and even when I am not at home, wifi playing, as I can setup wifi hotspot and I am away from any wifi. Many thanks..
Sorry that was my bad, I forgot I was looking at my m9, not my U11. You are up to date.
My post has been edited. Follow that.
To have the same problem on both phones is very strange indeed. It must be network settings causing the problem unless you have an app running that monitors WiFi in some way..
I, too, have been having WiFi problems all of a sudden. I am not stock, I'm on viper with EAS kernel, but was running it all just fine for a while then without changing anything, I have the same problem.
Still looking for fix, but no luck so far, tonight I reset router just to be sure, but problem is still there, I am sure sooner or later I will find out what is behind this problem.
