You can use the update procedure described here by @Williamtung.
if you don't like root you can skip the patching stage.

A13 is not even out yet, so don't expect it at least till the next month or even later.
Also, it's normal that you don't receive OTA while being unlocked or rooted.

Hi XDA-Devvers,
In a topic (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510719) I read about the following:

Root won't stop an ota but an unlocked bootloader will. You can check in your boot screen if its still unlocked or if its relocked.

Doesn't that mean that we can root our tablet, lock the bootloader again (fastboot oem lock), install Voodoo OTA RootKeeper and once there's an OTA available, just backup the root with the Voodoo app and install it?
How awesome would that be
Since I am not a pro in that kind of stuff: Can anyone confirm this theory might actually work for real?
fastboot oem lock is unavailable once you unlocked the bootloader.
Ah bummer. Can we relock the bootloader yet? IF we were able to relock the bootloader, it would work, wouldn't it?

No, as many informations -including bootloader version- are sent to check if a new OTA is available

Okay, thank you for replying. This makes the decision to root a little harder since I want to keep getting updates and for that you'll need ClockWork (and the people who are pushing the update to XDA)(Clockwork does have the nandroid backup though, which I want to have when rooting), which doesn't run very stable last time I read (I rooted before, but then I sent my tab back (heat problems) and got a new one. I flashed a beta ROM xd).
I thanked your post
Isn't it enough to have the original Kernel and ROM? Do you really need a locked bootloader to get OTA updates?
Has anyone tested the universal root method? See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
As this doesn't effect the Kernel, OTA updates might work if rooting works with this method.
I've not tried it. I've read some people are bricking their tablets with the universal, and since the A700 is basically a brick waiting to happen, I think I'll pass on it for a while.
I might be buying this instead of the M. But first, some questions.
1. When I first get it, will I be able to unlock and root it straight out of the box, with or without OTA update?
2. How good is the dev support for this phone?
I'll update this when I think of more.
Yes you can unlock the bootloader and root and and flash a recovery. And about Dev support well we just got official CM10.1 and PAC and alot of other roms.

Um, no, you can't unlock the bootloader anymore on the latest OTA. You can still get root by downgrading to a previous firmware and using Voodoo to protect root before upgrading again, but you will never be able to unlock the bootloader since the trusted zone partition can't be downgraded.

So don't OTA when I first get it?
I mean, I'm fine with a non-unlockable bootloader. But if I have the choice to unlock it when it comes in, I won't be OTA-ing it. Speaking of which, whenever you activate the phone, doesn't it OTA?
Also, whenever I receive this what version will it be running on? And what version did they patch the bootloader method you guys were using? I'm not gonna be OTAing. And if activating the phone means OTAing, I'll unlock it prior to activation.
What you'll more than likely get from Verizon is a phone running the 4.1.2 firmware, build number starts with 9.16. This will be rootable, but you will not be able to unlock the bootloader. You will be asked to update with an OTA to firmware build number which starts with 9.18. You won't be able to root 9.18, but if you root on 9.16 first, use VooDoo OTA rootkeeper and then update, you should still be rooted on 9.18

So anything before 9.16 and I should be good to go? Hopefully they don't ship it out with 9.16+
Actually, would it be possible to downgrade to below 9.16 whenever I get it?
Will I receive updates even if i unlock my bootloader?
I have read on some forums that can affect the OTA updates, it that true?

Yes, Unlocking bootloader will show OTA notification but will fail when you try to install updates.
I also had same issue on my XL. Just had to relock the bootloader and update successful.
Just askin'.. do you think that the official lollipop update will be downloadable somewhere on the internet? (like sammobile does for samsung phones firmwares).
Yes
So I picked up my Pixel from big red today and successfully used depixel8 to unlock the bootloader. I know depixel8 does not work on 7.1.1, but am I able to safely accept the update or will it relock my bootloader and leave me with no options for unlocking it again for the time being? TIA for your help guys.
You can take the update, it will not re lock the bootloader.

Beautiful, thanks.
You *should* be fine taking the OTA (and keep your bootloader unlocked) if you unlocked it before taking the OTA.
Edit: I'm too slow.

I've been wondering the same thing, do you have to do anything differently or just receive the Ota like normal? I've read in some cases people having to flash a modified zip to receive the update but I'm not sure if that was this device or not.

You need to flash stock boot img. If you're on a custom kernel.
In theory you should be able to take an OTA update on an unlocked and rooted phone. However in real life it doesn't seem to work out that way very often. In the 8 months I've owned my Pixel 3a XL, I've been successful at taking an OTA update about three times.
You need to familiarize yourself with the "sideload" process of installing an OTA update for the times the normal process does not work. I've created a "How to" thread that talks about rooting as well as taking OTA updates and sideloading updates. It should have all the information you need. https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-3a/how-to/how-to-root-pixel-3a-preferred-t3938783
