Hi XDA-Devvers,
In a topic (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510719) I read about the following:

Root won't stop an ota but an unlocked bootloader will. You can check in your boot screen if its still unlocked or if its relocked.

Doesn't that mean that we can root our tablet, lock the bootloader again (fastboot oem lock), install Voodoo OTA RootKeeper and once there's an OTA available, just backup the root with the Voodoo app and install it?
How awesome would that be
Since I am not a pro in that kind of stuff: Can anyone confirm this theory might actually work for real?
fastboot oem lock is unavailable once you unlocked the bootloader.
Ah bummer. Can we relock the bootloader yet? IF we were able to relock the bootloader, it would work, wouldn't it?

No, as many informations -including bootloader version- are sent to check if a new OTA is available

Okay, thank you for replying. This makes the decision to root a little harder since I want to keep getting updates and for that you'll need ClockWork (and the people who are pushing the update to XDA)(Clockwork does have the nandroid backup though, which I want to have when rooting), which doesn't run very stable last time I read (I rooted before, but then I sent my tab back (heat problems) and got a new one. I flashed a beta ROM xd).
I thanked your post
Isn't it enough to have the original Kernel and ROM? Do you really need a locked bootloader to get OTA updates?
Has anyone tested the universal root method? See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
As this doesn't effect the Kernel, OTA updates might work if rooting works with this method.
I've not tried it. I've read some people are bricking their tablets with the universal, and since the A700 is basically a brick waiting to happen, I think I'll pass on it for a while.

Hi!
I'm wanting to unlock the bootloader on my new TF700, but I read this in the bootloader unlocker disclaimer:
...can no longer receive ASUS software updates...

Does this mean that I can't use ANY official ASUS updates, even if I want to run the update manually? Or does this just refer to OTA updates? I really want to put Jellybean on here when they release it, so I probably won't unlock the bootloader if I can't update to it manually.
Also, does unlocking the bootloader also run a factory reset and wipe the device?

You'll be flashing ROMs, not getting ASUS's updates. A rom for the latest firmware usually takes less than a week to get on the dev section of the forum.

Only refers to OTA, as far as we currently know -- the bootloader unlock hasn't been available long enough to prove otherwise.

Nope, it only reboots. It will leave your user data intact when performed correctly. Obviously, when the crap goes into the ventilator, global nuclear war might ensue or your cat may just die (if you don't have one, you will receive one from a local asylum a few days before, that's enough emotional attachment to make it hurt).
<Oh, sometimes I'm vile. Sorry! >
I might be buying this instead of the M. But first, some questions.
1. When I first get it, will I be able to unlock and root it straight out of the box, with or without OTA update?
2. How good is the dev support for this phone?
I'll update this when I think of more.
Yes you can unlock the bootloader and root and and flash a recovery. And about Dev support well we just got official CM10.1 and PAC and alot of other roms.

Um, no, you can't unlock the bootloader anymore on the latest OTA. You can still get root by downgrading to a previous firmware and using Voodoo to protect root before upgrading again, but you will never be able to unlock the bootloader since the trusted zone partition can't be downgraded.

So don't OTA when I first get it?
I mean, I'm fine with a non-unlockable bootloader. But if I have the choice to unlock it when it comes in, I won't be OTA-ing it. Speaking of which, whenever you activate the phone, doesn't it OTA?
Also, whenever I receive this what version will it be running on? And what version did they patch the bootloader method you guys were using? I'm not gonna be OTAing. And if activating the phone means OTAing, I'll unlock it prior to activation.
What you'll more than likely get from Verizon is a phone running the 4.1.2 firmware, build number starts with 9.16. This will be rootable, but you will not be able to unlock the bootloader. You will be asked to update with an OTA to firmware build number which starts with 9.18. You won't be able to root 9.18, but if you root on 9.16 first, use VooDoo OTA rootkeeper and then update, you should still be rooted on 9.18

So anything before 9.16 and I should be good to go? Hopefully they don't ship it out with 9.16+
Actually, would it be possible to downgrade to below 9.16 whenever I get it?

Yes.
But, here's something even better. With the new Towelroot for locked bootloaders on KK, once rooted, you can then use Motopocalypse and unlock your bootloader.
Nice going, Motorola! With the KK update, someone must have pulled in the old code to allow the exploit to unlock the bootloader (that was patched as of 9.18) to work. Way too funny, but I'm sure many people out there are bowing to Motorola for this, even though I'm sure it wasn't supposed to happen like this! :silly:
So, those of you with locked bootloaders, go root RIGHT NOW and UNLOCK those bootloaders. You're warranty was voided as soon as you rooted, so what harm is there in unlocking it as well? That means when the next OTA comes out (not sure when, but it will probably be soon since I got a new email for a new soak test), it means root will definitely be broken for those with locked bootloaders. With an unlocked bootloader, you'll be able to sideload SU onto your phones when the new OTA comes out, so better to be safe than sorry.
Good to know...

Well, technically there is no going back.....you can use SamuriHL's HouseOfMoto...with the JB FXZ files to generate the scripts, and then use the Universal script to flash....this will flash everything EXCEPT the tz and gpt partitions, at that point you should be able to flash a JB ROM.
You cannot downgrade tz and gpt so dont waste your time trying...

This morning i finally relented and installed the 4.4 update (kitkat?) on my droid razr maxx hd. now im stuck at the red M motorola splash screen thing. is there any way i can fix this? I went to verizon and they wouldent do anything for me. I need my phone for work every day so help is greatly appreciated. i also tried the power volume down to restore factory settings or whatever but it just goes to the M screen forever. the only thing that DOES come up from those menus is ap fast boot. not sure if thats helpful or not. PS im new to this stuff so noob friendly responses please!
Were you rooted at all? Did you modify your system in any way (froze or uninstalled stock apps)? If so, that's why.

That's your issue. You can't do an OTA after you've rooted since the OTA does a verification to ensure the system isn't modified in any way.
Go to the link I posted in my previous reply to you to get yourself updated to Kit Kat and then unlock you bootloader if you haven't since the KK update put the bootloader exploit back in.
ok

could you link me to the root/unlock tutorial for my phone? sorry im noob XD
Just to be sure, you didn't update to the latest soak that just came out, correct? You are on the previous Kit Kat OTA right?
If you haven't applied the latest soak (183.46.10.XT926), then you are golden and can unlock. ONLY apply the soak update AFTER you've unlocked your bootloader.
no

You should have just ignored the update until after you unlocked the phone. The link I sent you to was meant to get you updated to KK before the 183.46.10 update. The previous KK update allowed you to unlock your bootloader. Now, that is no longer possible. There is no way to downgrade to a previous version. Once the ability to unlock has been patched, you cannot go back and try to unlock it.
You can still root the phone, though. Search for towelroot and you can install that and run it to root your device.
One thing you could try is once you've rooted, try running Motopocalypse to see if it will unlock your bootloader. Either it will or it won't. It won't hurt your phone in any way or brick it.
lame...

WHOA! WHOA! WHOA! My bad. You should be okay to unlock!
Please go here and attempt it -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/46155-rootunlock-442-182183-razr-hdm-only/
Get Towelroot and run it. This should root your phone -> http://www.towelroot.com/
Next, get the motopocalypse apk from here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53428225&postcount=22
Install and run that on your phone. That should then unlock your bootloader.
So, you are fine. I completely brain farted that the soak test hasn't been sent to everyone. It is available to download and install, but don't do it yet.
PLEASE go and unlock your phone. I'm so sorry for the confusion.
Let me know how it goes!

No, that is the version you CAN unlock. At first, it was believed it couldn't happen, but someone discovered that Moto had accidentally added the bootloader unlock exploit back in with the KK release. It's the version after that, which hasn't been released yet but will be soon, that patches the exploit back up to no allow it. The zip file for it is available outside of the soak test so it hasn't been sent to you. What you took was the OTA you do want which does allow unlocking.
Please, go unlock your phone now before the OTA is released and then you'll be forever locked.
Go here to unlock it -> http://www.droidrzr.com/index.php/topic/46155-rootunlock-442-182183-razr-hdm-only/
Do it now before you do anything else. Do NOT apply the soak test OTA (which is available via a media fire link from SamuriHL) until you've unlocked your phone.

Rooted and unlocked. Very happy about it. But now what? What can I get with bootloader unlocked besides revert to jb?
I still need to get my WiFi tether app to work. I'm grandfathered into unlimited data so my phone is basically my internet. Are there any cool ROMs where the WiFi just works with no tricks or work a rounds?
His guys just got the xzp and wow what a phone my only concern is root I have a locked bootloader and it's not unlockable but to be fair I've never unlocked a Xperia bootloader due to loosing drm keys etc
So my question is will we be able to get root on locked bootloaders like we did with past Xperia phones or are we stuck unless we unlock which in my case would mead no root ever :crying:
Thanks
Probably not would be my guess. You still need to unlock bootloader on previous models such as XZ/XZS.

Like always, if a security breach is found on Android that allow getting root access, it will be possible to backup the DRM partition, then after if you like, unlocking the bootloader and then restore your DRM partition.
At least, it finished like this for the Z5, but you had to downgrade to Lollipop to get root access.
AFAIK, there is no known way to get root on Nougat today.

It's not possible anymore. You really need to unlock the bootloader in order to root. Something about patching the kernel.
