Just don't take it. And turn off auto updating. If you know you don't want to make the switch, perhaps consider doing a custom rom on 12 and stay up to date with security patches on that. Otherwise, you are going to become more vulnerable over time.
I'm the same. I got caught by google's 'rollback n brick yer phone' stunt.
Just got an email that it's being repaired under warranty. It'll probably come back with 13 installed with my luck.
What I ACTUALLY hate most is 'material you' screwing with my phone color every time I turn around or change wallpaper!
I want a on/off switch for material you...then ok, I'll run whatever...

You can turn off wallpaper-based dynamic theming/colours by choosing "Basic Colours" (instead of "Wallpaper Colours") under the Wallpaper & Style settings

Thanks. I'm not used to being able to control this, LOL. Samsungs don't let you say no. You either update or enjoy the nag screen forever.
And _that'd_ be why I'll never go back to Samsung....
I don't get the hate for Android 13. The only real difference I noticed was that the settings and edit buttons were moved around on the drop down (when you swipe down).
Anything else must be so minor I didn't notice.

Yeah, I'm aware of that. But I don't have any reason to go back to Android 12 anyway. It isn't like I'm losing access to something better.

Samsung has been on a KitKat spree lately, and it has just about covered most of its popular devices from the last two(ish) years with the update. Today, Verizon updated its support docs for the Galaxy SIII, which indicates that the update is on its way in the coming days, as well.
Aside from KitKat, this update brings a couple of new enhancements, like the inclusion of Isis. Otherwise, it's basically the same song and dance – updated applications, bug fixes, an improved multi-app experience, the like.

Yes, there shouldn't be discussion threads until and update is going to be released. Not everybody has the time to read through a discussion thread that's been around for months to see if there is an update.
Just my 2¢
Sent by me.
Just got a notification for update! Kitkat 4.4.2 :good:
Me too !!
Me Too !!
Wait, let me post that again
Me too !!
Guess what?
I'm not taking any OTAs
I'm waiting for the developer release so I won't be f---ked.
No me too !
Performed update. Now what is this icon?!
I performed the update last night and now there is an icon in my notification bar that won't go away and doesn't appear when I maximize the window. Its incredibly frustrating!
It won't let me post a link and the image file is too big, so add dropbox to the beginning of this and it is a picture of the icon.
/sh/z6vh4b8g4qknlog/AABIf5TlJUNssKa-q-VC8Dhna
Does anyone know what this is?
Nevermind! Found it doing a google image search. It is the NFC icon and can be accessed by expanding notifications and touching the top right (4 square like) icon. From there you can add the toggle button to your quick menu or turn it off.
this is the point in time were i wish i didnt have an unlocked bootloader
Did the update change/unlock anything useful?
Back when I had JB I asked this forum if I could install KitKat and was told it wasnt possible. Did the update make custom roms possible again?

Thanks for the quick reply. That's really disappointing though. I was really disappointed to see that, after updating, my phone doesnt look any different. According to the official kitkat page, I should have new features like immersion, updated hangouts and a new phone app. I don't see any of them, but my phone says its running version 4.4.2 and I'm current on updates. Am I missing something?
hello all,
i just bought nexus 5.... i am kind of noob when it comes to android.
is there i can block all annoying ads that crops up within apps and browser?
i dont want to risk rooting my phone.
pls suggest me easiest, secure way to do this....
thanks.
You can try opting out from Ads from Google Settings but the only way to get rid of all the ads is to use an app like adaway which needs root. I don't know why you think it's a risk rooting your phone?? You can get back to stock anytime to claim warranty.

hello
since i am new to android, i dont want to mess up/experiment on my phone. atleast till i get hang of it.
i used play a lot with my N95 before. so, till i get firm grasp on android inner workings, i wouldnt want to do anything with its in built features.
further, rooting is bit too technical for me..... there is no application that can root with just a click like it existed with S60 V3 OS.....
so will wait till such a thing comes up.
Try to find in playstore

Even though there are tools available to do this (simple search on xda will locate those), you really should take the time to understand the 4-5 (simple) steps involved in rooting. That way, you know exactly what is happening (versus a toolkit that will attempt to do everything for you, and just tell you "all done" - without you having a clue about what really happened). The advantage of understanding these steps is that later, if you want to install an update or want to switch kernels and read a guide that tells you to flash "xyz", or restore from nandroid etc, you will not be clueless. Or if somebody tries to help you with an issue, and asks you to go your recovery, you won't be asking "how do I go to recovery screen"
My suggestion: If you are ever planning to root your Nexus 5, read the first 2 posts at http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...ide-nexus-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905 - especially the parts highlighted in red.
Then, read it again <-- repeat till you understand it. If you have questions, read/search that thread to see if somebody already asked that question - and if not, ask in that thread.
The Nexus is probably the easiest device to root. But don't root till you are comfortable with it, and understand the steps involved.
Since you mentioned in your first post that you didn't want to root, you could try https://adblockplus.org/en/about
I must admit that I tried it once and wasn't able to get it to work right, and so I just installed adaway (that requires root) instead.

Ad Block Plus got nuked by Google, unfortunately. You need root to do this for all apps and on all connection types.

Good on you to take the time to learn.
Short of rooting your phone and installing an ad-blocker, you would have to pay for "pro" versions of apps you use, which often remove ads from the app as part of the upgrade.
MoaAB hands down is the best add blocker! But u need root...
(Mother of all Add Blockers)
Nothing is going to fully block ads without root. Nope. ?
For unrooted try Andblock (not ABP) http://code.google.com/p/andblock/
You need to import a host file (menu > import), and set Port to 8080
Blocks web ads only

So just for browsers you mean? If that's the case you can just use AdBlock Plus extensions/addons for your respective browser.
Adblock (unrooted, side load APK) will still work for WiFi just not on a data connection and needs to be setup as a proxy, or is it just for data? Can't remember.

It’s plugged as ‘Andblock’, yet the app is named ‘Adblock’ – very confusing. And I’m sure it’s intentional, given the similarities with ABP.
Before I rooted my device I used Andblock (Adblock) – it works with 3g/4g, whereas ABP unrooted only works over wifi. Anyway, standalone ABP for Android is riddled with bugs and inconsistencies – brilliant as a FF addon in Windows, might be good as a browser ext. for Android - but if you're unrooted and use a browser that hasn’t got an ABP ext. then you’re buggered.
A device isn’t completely free of ads even with root - the famed MoaAB doesn't block every app ad.
Hello all. I'm running a Pixel 5a, Android 13 and the Sept security update. After installing the Sept security update (I specifically know this caused it), I can no longer click the "x" for the "Reward Granted" button on any ads in apps/games. When I do click it, you can hear the click sound like 20 times really quick, but no matter what I have tried, it wont actually click it. The only way to get out of the ad is to either backswipe (which then doesn't accept the fact you watched the ad), or kill the app. Anyone have any ideas on what to try? It happens in multiple games (they all use the same ad backend I assume), so its not a specific one.
go back to android 12 ? beside pixels most phones are still on android 12. given this, makes sense lots of devs did not made or changed their apps with android 13 in mind.
I used to do it to flash firmwares but that does not seem to be prevalent any more, so why do I need to root?
I know this is a developer/modding site but I have to agree with the OP.
I come here for the general forum information that is "usually" more technical for obvious reasons. But to risk a very expensive tool for unlocking and modding....the risks far outweigh the benefits...IMO...YMMV
App & system theming (with Substratum + Swift Black, Repainter for pure system AMOLED black & Project Themer for different notification styles, lockscreen clock etc.). System-wide equaliser (currently with JamesDSP but will await VIper4Android working on A13 hopefully), system-wide ad-blocking. Revanced Youtube for background play etc.
Plus with AOSP Mods via Magisk it adds tons on features like customisable quick toggle column/row quantities + label text size, clock position, removing carrier label from status bar, long press power button screen off for torch and so much more! Plus not to mention custom rom support which whilst sometimes buggy, come with a wealth of benefits. I like to stick to stock these days with AOSP Mods & Magisk, as that module has many features and saves having any custom rom bugs (e.g. on Pixel 6 Pro, a custom rom would lose Magic Eraser whereas having a modded stock, retained it)/
I get the risks, but we do plenty of research and tread carefully and all is generally ok!
Got my Pixel 7 Pro just today and bootloader unlocked after the first OTA came through. It's now rooted and without passing safetynet currently, all cards successfully added to my Google Wallet.
Running like a dream
I used to root every one of my previous phones, but I've not done so on my Noted 10 Plus as I find Samsung Pay too useful. And rooting destroys it forever. Not sure if Google Pay still works when rooted, that may nudge me to do it.
I have no plans to root my 7 Pro when it arrives. But that may change.
Naughty boy client for Pokemon GO and system-wide AdBlock
For me the main thing is working app backup, since the Google solution is absolutely unreasonable (I have several non-play-store apps that I have had on every smartphone I've owned, and data generally isn't saved with Google anyway) But also tons of little things like being able to set a limit on battery charge level, full (to the extent still possible) filesystem access, a floating CPU monitor I like, Greenify, Island, Tasker stuff, etc.
System wide as blocking since 2012. No other phone does it better and easier.

Just use their website? Or switch banks? I have my primary bank with a local outfit that doesn't care about rooting (although that's not why I got them, it certainly helps keep me there) if I need to deposit a check and everything else can be done on their mobile website.
My main reason would be for the custom Kernels and for Viper4Android. I didn't have a bunch of $ to fork out for 2 new phones so I went with Verizon so I won't be getting either unless I hit the lottery and then buy a Google Version of the P7P.
Anyone remember what made us able to root/ unlock the bootloader On the OG Verizon pixel?
Any chance of that happening on this device or should I just go ahead and do the system update that's waiting? For instance, I know the Samsung Galaxy Note Ultra 20 5G on Verizon(The Device I'm switching from) was locked down but apparently some guy on XDA started an Unlock service and would unlock it for ~$100.
I root since it's my XDA addiction!
Also add Titanium to the attached list!

From memory on the Verizon Pixel 1, there was a bug on Android 7.10, I believe it was, that fully just allowed us to toggle OEM unlocking on. From there it was a done deal. They patched it in 7.11. Again, from memory but it was either that or 7.11 before and 7.12 after.
And no, not likely to happen again. It would be very, very rare and like hitting the lottery. Didn't happen on the Pixel 6 Pro.

The reality is that forced hardware attestation and the Play Integrity API will soon put an end to the tricks used to get around detection so people will have to figure out what root is worth to them. I decided awhile ago that I can live without it. Adb pull /sdcard does a nice enough backup job for me and Google's cloud backup pulls partial app data and will restore it where applicable.
Of course it does seem that there isn't a way to disable 5G SA on Pixels without disabling 5G altogether so I may have a use for root in the end anyway, time will tell, as I get sick of being stuck on T-Mobile's slow as molasses SA when midband is available.
Well i have rooted every other phone and rooting, installing kernel or roms solve some problem where oem is lazy or will not solve. Previously i was using OnePlus 7 pro with unlocked bootloader initially with Android 9. During Android 10 i prefer to lock bootloader again as during that time i was damm busy and getting time for root and transfer data was not possible. During Android 11 Oneplus had really ****ed up, device was getting hot like frying pan in summer. I really had no choice but to unlock bootloader and installed a stable custom rom(CR Droid) . Everything was perfect. After 9-10 months i thought i willl go to stock again and lock bootloader. But to my surprise cts profile was not getting matched. My phone was constantly recognized as Google pixel 6 pro (no NFC payment and play store dont recognize netfix) . Only safety net fix with Magisk was able to fix it. What really surprise is when i again installed Oxygen OS 10 cts profile was showing match with locked bootloader and with Oxygen OS 11,12 will show CTS profile mismatch. I really don't know what i had done wrong and there is no solution for locked bootloader.
So my suggestion is if anybody really want to unlock bootloader and have magisk prefer with your secondary device.
Is it possible to unlock 5G in another countries with root while having functional google wallet?
I only do it for AdAway. Would be wonderful if I could avoid rooting for blocking ads since it makes a few apps unusable (specificly Norwegian with no rooting community support). But I'll probably root my P7P when I get it on monday.
Hello,
Not sure if it's the right place, but I'm getting depressed with my Xiaomi 12 behaviour. Since last update, MIUI global 13.2.4, the phone keeps killing apps, even if I set those with :
- not battery restriction
- auto startup
I tried a factory reset, I unlocked it, rooted it. It keeps killing apps. It's annoying, because I use Vivid and removed the navigation buttons. I let you imagine how I can be stuck sometimes when Vivid is killed. Yet, Vivid is locked... So MIUI regurlaty kills it, and sometimes, it even loses the accessibility autorisation.
How can I know what's killing it ? Obviousily, I'm not in Eco mode, and this behaviour also occurs in performance mode. Everything worked very fine until last update.

You are not the only one to have had problems following updates, the solution if it worked before, is to flash the previous rom or to use a Xiaomi EU rom.
Sometimes Xiaomi renames a Stable Beta to stable without fixing anything.

Downgrading requires a clean flash and the root is lost along with your data.
Use this tool:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/flash-tool-guide-use-xiaomi-flash-tool.4262425/
And disable the update.
EDIT:
I use a Xiaomi EU rom on my 12 pro and I have several apps that must remain in the background, works very well.
With a Xiaomi EU rom you will have the certified play store without root and lots of extra options.
This is happening to me also and many other people. Fun times waking up to find that your alarm clock hasn't gone off because it was killed in the background.
There doesn't seem to be a workaround yet. There's several posts on the mi.com forums regarding it:

People there have discussed making a bug report via the feedback app (Settings->"Services & Feedback") might garner some support for Xiaomi to fix the issue... one can only hope.
All I can say is if you're thing of updating to V13.2.4.0.TLCEUXM OTA then DONT! Teach me to apply an update without checking on it first.

Go to this site if you need anything, the updates with beta roms on the stable channel do not date from today, many threads on this subject have been created without change since today the problem persists.
Reporting bugs via Services & Feedback hasn't changed anything either.
Note that since the redesign of their site, important threads have disappeared and even some devices.
As a reminder, it is the moderators of this site who report information, well that's just theory because in practice, nothing happens.
If you want answers from Xiaomi, tell them you want to buy a new phone because that's what they're interested in, selling.
I tell you this because at a certain time, I was active on this site, but some of my posts were deleted because I explained how to solve or work around the problem.
Sometimes by checking the hash of a beta rom and the following stable, it was the same.
The solution is to unlock the bootloader and downgrade or install a Xiaomi EU rom.

Not new, but it's a detail you have trouble knowing before buying. With Vivid Gesture, I was plainly satisfied, but this new bug is really frustrating.
Regarding "Xiaomi EU rom", how well tested is it? Do they have an issue tracker and a list of known bugs?
I've rooted and flashed community ROMs in the past only to find out they are poorly tested / have horrible QA and although superficially they work fine other aspects didn't like Bluetooth, Android Auto or certain camera modes etc.
It has been a while though since I last attempted one, maybe things have moved on since then?
Xiaomi has removed so much of the Google framework that even push notifications isn't working. Take note that the Global ROM is based on the CN variant which is known for aggressive background killing of apps.
In Xiaomi's defense, they are "freeing up" up to 800mb of your internal storage by removing most of Google's API but in the expense of all the issues encountered by Global ROM users.
So if anyone is interested, I'm trying to see if disabling com.miui.powerkeeper works round this issue of background apps being killed in V13.2.4.0.TLCEUXM .
I followed this tutorial:
How to disable any pre-installed system app bloatware on Android without root
If you hate the bloatware or pre-installed apps on your Android smartphone, here's how to disable them even if Android doesn't normally let you.
www.xda-developers.com
Will report back if I notice any improvement.
Maybe someone more knowledgable might be able to tell me if there are any downside to disabling this package?
I am suffering the exact same problem with my device since the 13.2.4 update, what i nightmare to use the device since then ! As the other users already reported, it s even killing the alarm app which prevents it to ring ! But it also impacts all app notifications, like whatsapp, outlook, etc. After being killed I don't get the new notifications for those.
I can't believe that they are pushing such an update globally, they are gonna lose a lot of customers which such a poor strategy, as this is not just a "little" bug.
I am interested in the Xiaomi.EU rom, looks like they released one 2 days ago with version number 13.2.6, but I have to investigate if we can install that over our official version on an original EU device, and if it requires a full data wipe or not.

Welcome to XIAOMI.
You can check below the version of the rom proposed for the update, before performing it.
https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/archive/miui/cupid/
EDIT:
You can either update the rom with the update.bat file included in the Fastboot.zip folder but since it is an A13 version, it is preferable to format the data with the first install.bat file .
Obviously the bootloader must be unlocked.
Also remove the security from the lock screen and restart the system.
Hello. I have exactly the same problem. I just bought the phone, after a week I got that update and it made me completely regret that I bought it. Is there any "clean" way to return to the version of MIUI I bought the phone with?
Would a reset return me to the old version? Since i got almost nothing important in the phone, it wouldnt be a big deal.
