!Nexus 5 Launcher with "OK Google"!

Saw this on phandroid and thought it was worth sharing here.
If you're like me and you want to test out some of the most noticeable new features in Android 4.4 KitKat then this is for you.
I have tested cm11 alpha1 for about 30 minutes and all I can say is that it's nothing more than a proof of concept at this point (just like the alpha tag suggests).
So if you want some of the quirks of KitKat in a stable environment (any jb rom) here's a way of getting some of it.
While Google still hasn’t provided the actual launcher in the Play Store, some simple sideloading of the GoogleHome.apk we found in the Nexus 5′s factory image, along with the updated Google Search app, got everything up and running. Here’s our easy how-to on getting GEL installed and fully functional on your Android device.

First, make sure to enable the sideloading of apps by going into your device Settings > Security > and checking Unknown sources. From there download the updated Google Search and Google Home from us (linked below). Jump into your Downloads app and install both the apps you just downloaded (press the descriptions, not the check boxes), selecting “done” after every installation.

From there, press the home button and select “Launcher” as your default homescreen — this is the new Google Experience Launcher. You’ll notice the always listening “Ok Google” command doesn’t work from the Google Experience Launcher. No worries, turning it on is easy.
For some, you’ll be able to swipe to the left and quickly access Google Search/Now, but if that’s not available, you’ll need to actually enable the new Google Search/Now app. It’s easy, just open the Google Search app (listed as “Google” in your app drawer) and click “Next” then “I’m in.” Once that’s taken care of, jump back to your homescreen. You’ll now be able to swipe to the left and access Google Now.
Once in Google Now, scroll all the way to the bottom and press the 3 dot menu to select Settings. From there, select “voice” > “offline speech recognition” (manage downloaded languages). Now, we’re going to work our way from the right tab, all the way to the left.
Select the Auto-Update tab from the top and choose one of the auto-update options (we recommend leaving it on “over WiFi-only”). After that, scoot over to the All tab and find English (US). You’ll notice it already says “pre-installed”. Don’t listen to it. Select English (US) anyway. From there, jump to the Installed tab and press “English (US)” where you’ll be asked to download the latest version (version 28 at the time of writing). Hit “Download” and the updated version will be downloaded and installed.
After it’s finished downloading, press the home button where you’ll notice “Ok Google” will now be displayed inside the Google Search widget. Simply speak that phrase whenever you’re on your homescreen to perform a Google Search or voice actions. That’s it. Was relatively painless, right?

Issues on Skyrocket:
The launcher lags a tiny bit when entering/exiting app drawer and when pressing home while on another page in the homescreen.

You have to allow it to search contacts in google search settings. It works fine here.

[Q] Customizable Grid

When Trying To Edit An APP, System Responds With " Icons can only be arranged in a customizable grid". I Cannot Find This Option "Customizable Grid" on My Note Pro. Any Help Would Be Greatly Appreciated.

Define "edit an app" . . for all we know you're trying to decompile an application and edit code or something. I doubt that's what you're doing but you see my point.
If I had to guess, you're working within a launcher and trying to do something with an app icon but it's not clear what launcher you're using and what specific actions you're taking to get to that issue.

I'm new to the Note Pro. My question was ambiguous. I'll try again: When I select the APPS screen from the initial screen that appears when the Note Pro boots up, there is a pull-down menu that has an "Edit" option, among others. When I select "Edit" and then point to one of the listed APPs icons, a message appears at the bottom of the screen that says that editing can only be done when the Note Pro is placed in "Customizable Grid" mode. Thus far, neither Samsung or Verizon tech support knows how to find the "Customizable Grid" option for my Note Pro. I was hoping someone would be familiar with this problem i.e. security setting prevents users from doing so or the option is buried beneath several sub-menus. I hope this helps explain my question.

It does but I'm not sure why your launcher is locked in that fashion. It sounds like you're in stock touchwiz launcher trying to edit the arrangement of application icons in the application drawer. I switched back to stock launcher on my tablet to try to duplicate your issue and do not get that error or a warning, I'm able to long press any application icon and move it or drag it to the menu options presented to me while holding onto the icon.
Jumping into all menus and settings windows I can think of hasn't brought me to any conclusive solution. Hopefully someone more experienced with stock launcher can chime in.

Have you tried resetting the data and cache for your TouchWiz? You can do it in settings, find TouchWiz under applications, then clear both data and cache. Keep in mind that this will reset your application drawer settings and your home screen arrangements to the factory default.

If I even so much as open the Apps screen on Touchwiz, all I get is " Touchwiz has stopped".
I'm always a little surprised to see people willingly use Touchwiz. It's unstable, one of the worst resource hogs, it has more errors than functionality, and it's cluttered as hell.
Try Apex or Nova. More stable, less resource heavy, more options.

Thanks for the follow-up. I tried finding the TouchWiz under APPS and I do not find any reference to TouchWiz. The only APP I see with any reference to WIZ is the Setup Wizard. Under settings, I also do not see any reference to TouchWiz.
Am I missing something here?

It may be named Launcher or home launcher or something like that. Normally the icon next to it is a White House with a big letter S on it, with a blue roof. make sure when you're looking at applications you look under the ALL tab.

A blue drop appears on my screen

Looks like something to do with the weather, you have a storm/rain forecast on the other widget

Yes, it's removable. It's a blue GPS raindrop/teardrop trying to locate your current location for an app (lication).
Do the following:
1. Go to home screen and TAP bottom right (APPS), and proceed to SETTINGS.
2. TAP SETTINGS.
3. OPEN CONNECTIONS and TAP BLUETOOTH [2nd option] OFF (Just momentarily)
4. TAP LOCATION [9th option] OFF (Just momentarily) while still in Connections via SETTINGS.
5. In Settings go into NOTIFICATIONS to TURN OFF ALL APPS Getting Notifications (Just temporarily)
6. Last go into Settings, DEVICE MANAGEMENT and FIX ALL that is needed or where you see a number. Once your device is at 90% or higher, BEST @ 100%, THE GPS RAINDROP/TEARDROP IS GONE.
Problem Solved.
Now you can proceed to turn on whatever you want on, such as:
Bluetooth On,
Location On, and
ALL APPS Notifications ON (Pushable).

I searched google for a few days in a row, but I did not find anything about it

Maybe it's more related with a bug in the system UI, because to me it doesn't look like a blue drop, but more like those "handles" to select text, don't you think?
If you remove your Clock/Weather widget, does the drop still appear? It could be a bug with your widget.
Also, if you try to click that "blue drop", what happens?
It seems like you've used an alternative launcher, an alternative clock/weather widget, alternative icons etc... So to investigate this, I would start looking in the apps I installed that have something to do with the customization of the home screen.

Blue tear drop
I got this in the middle of the home screen. Tapping it moved it to the top left. I rebooted into safe mode then from settings-apps-advanced-apps that can appear on top, disabled ones I thought had no need to do this. Skyp and samsung pay are two I don't use and disabled this permission (amongst others). Upon rebooting, the drop is gone. I should maybe pin this down to find the exact app but can't be bothered. Also this is disabling the drop but possibly not whatever it was representing.

It is a bug from messenger. Idk why, but if you're using the chat heads, you're typing something, and then minimize the chat, this blue drop can appear. I guess it's a bug from s7 Nougat, because since I updated to Oreo this bug has never happened to me again. But if you're on Nougat yet, you can do these steps to remove the drop:
1: In the recent apps tab, messenger must be there. If it is not, then open messenger, and go to home screen again.
2: Grab the messenger chat heads, and slide it into the bottom of the screen to remove it.
3: Now go to the recent apps tab, and remove messenger.
This should close messenger, and the blue drop should be gone.
I guess you can also go into settings, apps, messenger, and force stop, then the blue drop will be gone as well(but doing the steps above is easier), and then you just open messenger again, and whenever this drop appears, you just close messenger again.

Forse stop Facebook messenger and open it again

Launcher with the ability to show frozen/disabled apps

Since years i was quite baffled that even most third-party launchers were refusing to offer a way to display frozen apps in a distinguishable way but i was never bothered to do any actual research into why and if there might be something out there that does it.
Today i was finally having enough and tried searching google for a solution with no avail. Only a stackexchange question that resulted in a definition war rather than pointing to solutions and a reddit thread from 9 months ago with no upvotes and no answer.
Thanks to the mentioned stackexchange question i downloaded Nova Launcher today and tried that, but although i really like the design, performance and customizability it does not seem to offer the key feature i was looking for.
What the launcher i'm searching for should offer:
A toggle to enable showing frozen apps in the app drawer (Like actually "pm disable" frozen, not some kind of workaround island type or greenified "hibernated")
When device rooted, tapping a frozen app will unfreeze and start it
When device unrooted it should just open the manage app screen for that device where android itself will offer an unfreeze button
Customizability; Show frozen apps semi-translucent, Show frozen apps in grayscale, Move frozen apps to the bottom of the list or in its own section/group
I forgot to mention that Lucky Patcher actually offers custom widgets to toggle apps but that has to be done manually for every app and is quite lacking in terms of looks and comfort
One last thing; I was even thinking about manually syncing the shortcuts via something like Tasker or Automagic4Android. But to be honest, even if it worked it would still be jank and more of a workaround than a solution

Never heard of or seen anything like that in my almost 10 years on this site and other sites, I'm pretty sure you won't find anything that can natively do what you want, you will probably have to end up settling for "janky workarounds".

SDmaid still needs 4 taps to freeze/unfreeze apps while Andoid does that in about same number of taps. There is so much more customization that can be asked from Andoid.

The thing i settled for (for now) is using IceBox to create the shortcuts and just let it re-create them manually from time to time. Still needs some automation from Automagic though

I tried Icebox, AppOps & Automagic ; the phone got stuck at Starting Andoid screen repeatedly so I abandoned. I'm okay with MAT & SDmaid Pro for now.

Question Pixel Launcher draining battery

I have used Nova Launcher on my phone
And yesterday decided change it to stock
But I was very surprised how hard the battery was discharged.
Can this be fixed? Reset the launcher cache, disabled all settings, but does not help (

Usually it's the other way around. Try in safe mode. Try uninstalling Nova. You already tried clearing the Pixel launcher data. If so other than a 3rd party app interfering the only option is a factory reset. Use a logging firewall to see if it can help you spot what's running in the background.
Either way backup all critical data now as it doesn't sound like that load is stable... when Androids are fixing to crash the warning signs are subtle. Next reboot might be a boot loop...

I would agree with Blackhawk. Generally stock launcher is the most efficient on battery.
Nova is great but I have had some odd behavior from time to time.
I have stuck with the stock launcher on the P7P and been pretty happy with it.

I like Nova but it uses twice the battery of One UI, isn't as stable or fast. Verses the Pixel launcher the results likely be even worse than I experienced. Am I giving Pixel too much credit?
Probably not as Pixel prides itself on having an efficient launcher.
Nova (or an other 3rd party app*) may have altered hidden user settings and simply uninstalling it may not restore them to their default settings, oh my, but a factory reset will.
If any major firmware upgrades were done it's best practice to factory reset. I rarely suggest using a factory reset but sometimes it's the right choice if you can't correct the root cause which is the preferable course of action.
*poorly coded 3rd party apps can do a lot of damage and may not uninstall cleanly. Rare but a real pain when it happens.

I installed LogFox & LogcatReader and tried to get logs
I didn't see any errors but many warn such formats

So I decided to change the wallpaper and reboot the phone. Previous wallpapers I installed when I used Nova Launcher
As a result, the number of warnings dropped, but still there... I attached the logs, maybe someone can look at them... And tell me in which direction to research. =)
Also, for the sake of completeness, I restored deleted system applications ....

It's used 44% of the 8% used, as soon as you start to use other stuff the % it is using will plummet.

Put the pixel launcher on battery restricted. And turn off all the suggestions and "at a glance" though it shows time. But turn it off anyway turn off the background data Let the battery discharge itself. It should be fine when you next time when u'll start using after a full charge.

I restored all deleted system app and now all work fine
After the release of the update, I will experiment which application requires Pixel

For me the resolution is turn off "smooth display" and restart.
