Question Can a Chinese ROG Phone 5s be firmwared to US for 5g and wifi calling? - ASUS ROG Phone 5 / 5s

I purchased an ROG Phone 5s that was suppose to be the US Variant but its the chinese variant. I cannot return it or anything anymore so I am stuck with it. Is there any way to change the firmware to the US version for 5g and WIFI? I am using it on ATNT and I only get 4g

Bands are based on the hardware. There is only a 1% chance that it has the bands and they are disabled.
This is the fundamental problem with Asus releasing 50 variants on the same phone in a world where not everyone is honest and / or informed. This is also why most eBay listings say something like "check your carrier for 5G support." Some don't know what they have and others don't want you to know.

How to check if Mate 9 Pro really supports LTE ?

ebay LON-L29C636B156, t-mobile USA. (upgrade to B156 yesterday, did not change anything in respect to this issue).
I can get the 4G on the home screen, but never the 4G LTE symbol. And i do not get the VoLTE menu option. I called up t-mobile support and they said that whether or not its a phone bought from them or not, LTE would get enabled if the phone supports it. So i am starting to suspect that my phone (or rather the 636 taiwanese firmware ?) does not really support/enable LTE.
My t-mobile SIM does give me 4G LTE symbol in a colleagues Honor 8 from Best Buy, T-mobile USA does not sell that. Which seems to support what t-mobile support told me. His ATT SIM does also not give me 4G LTE indication on my phone.
Given how the specs of the HW all claim LTE support for the mate 9 pro, i wonder what my best diagnostics are to determine whether or not the firmware actually enables it.
Reboot phone without any SIM inserted: "LTE cell info" app: "3G mobile technologies": Yes, "4G mobile technologies: No", "Max speeds": HSPA - aka: seems to indicate that phone does not support LTE. Same with SIM inserted, no change whether i enable/disable 4G in the system.
"AntennaPict" app, with SIM inserted, 4G enabled says LTE: -106 dbm, with 4G disabled, it says HSPA+.
*sigh*. So the diagnostics apps are inconsistent.
Was wondering what others with Mate 9 pro see.
Not sure what else i could try. Go to european firmware via Funky and see if thats any better ? (whats the number for european firmware ?).
Thanks!
Its part of the upcoming software update. Same was enabled in the mate 9.
It absolutely supports LTE. 4G is synonymous with LTE outside of the US. It won't attach to LTE networks without a SIM inserted because of the way authentication onto those networks is performed. The second app is correct.
You can check network info in about phone.
Bumping here as I have the same issue as the OP.
Anyone figured how to get LTE and VoLTE enabled on LON-L29 on T-Mobile USA...
Also, how do we get OTA update while in the US as I believe my Mate 9 Pro is an Asian Model (LON-L29636) ?
Any help here guys/gals would be super helpful. I love the Mate 9 Pro, but without these 2 **important** features it is going to collect dust on my shelf.
Thanx

Problem is you have a C636 model, which is for Asia region, not for USA. Unfortunately there is no model available under US? This was the same issue I face here in Australia - there is no AU model sold here.
From what I have seen there are only these models for the Mate 9 Pro:
Mate 9 Pro, Europe Version (LON-L29C432)
Mate 9 Pro, Asia Version (LON-L29C636)
Mate 9 Pro, Middle East Version (LON-L29C185)
Mate 9 Pro, Non-Region-Branded (LON-L29C900)
Mate 9 Pro, China Version (LON-AL00C00)
And from what I have read on XDA - there is a "cust" partition, which contains the VOLTE configuration files, which are specific to that regions Telco providers, so not having any USA configuration - the VOLTE options do not work or display to enable them... This is a major flaw with how Huawei have configured the mobile device, from what I read on forums these files are under 1mb in size, so why they have not included all regional files on each device no matter the location is beyond me.... I am stuck without VOLTE option here in Australia due to this fact, and will most likely never get it since they are not selling the device here.
The C900 being "Non-Region-Branded", sounds like this may (or may not) be a winner to rebrand to.. i'm wondering if it contains configuration for all regions!
LTE here tho is called "4G" and I am connecting with 4G and 4G+, and get the data speeds of that, but not calling (it drops down to HSPA+ when I make a call).
I have read on here that Mate 9 owners have been able to backup the cust partition and then restore it using TWRP on other devices, or most people have re-branded to their correct region.. this not possible since there is no USA or AU region build for M9 Pro.

Possible to convert 5G variant to 4G variant??

So after searching around the internet and forums and discovering the 5G model is basically not receiving the same attention as the 4G I was wondering if any developers could answer me this, is it possible to convert the phone somehow? Of course I aren't expecting to use 5G if it is possible ( it's the only model EE offer) so had no choice but after reading that updates are none existent and there is no custom ROM support nor are we eligible for android beta programs ??*
In short: No.
I've seen it smart 5g but modem is the question best to ask a Dev who builds kernel 5g has a ways to go by next OnePlus release trade up is best way
Not really, no. AFAIK (I've done zero research on this so I can very possibly be wrong), the SOC in the 4G version is different from the 5G version because the SOC of the 4G version (System on Chip/Card, basically the CPU etc) does not support a 5G modem and antenna.
As I understand it, the difference between the 4G and 5G variants is similar to the difference between a Snapdragon and Exynos Galaxy S8,9, etc.
Again, I could be wrong about this and it's just how it was explained to me prior to the phone being released when I asked if it's possible that the 4G version could have the hardware for 5G and just not be enabled until 5G is available in your area, because there was a time when OnePlus was making a blanket statement that the OP7 Pro would be 5G, and said nothing about a 4G variant even being a possibility.

oneplus8t 5g issue

i bought oneplus 8t from India and using it in Thailand. Thailand has 5g coverage all over but bands are different. how can i add support of bands in Oneplus8t. please guide
IDK wht they use in Thailand. Maybe you can software unlock it, but you can't add bands that the hardware doesn't support. Try installing the global or eu rom on your phone.

In Thailand AIS Operator uses N41 Band for 5G . the specs of Indian version of oneplus 8t doesnt support that. I tried after installing global Rom as well. it still doesnt support 5G . Is there anyway to manipulate hardware to support that.
Anyone has any suggestions?
usually you can't unlock extra bands if the chipset doesn't support. If the chipset did support it, then it would have worked when you installed the EU rom.
As far as I know you can't unlock/change the bands your device support in any way. Not even by flashing another rom, it is defined on hardware level somewhere. All you can do is to buy a different model of the oneplus 8T that support the bands you want.
Maybe you can try to research the qualcom hack on the oneplus one. It probably won't work, but it might be an idea to start with to unlock extra bands that are hardware locked.
It's not a frequency locked... This B41 is NOT included in your model, so you can do nothing, just by a new 8T global if you want absolutely using 5G. Be careful when you purchase a phone on an another country, you can encounter warrantly problem, frequency compatibility problem and you don't have support.
Technically the Qualcomm modem in the 8T supports all of these bands. However, it's flashed at a hardware level you won't have access to. Sorry, but this is the manufacturer's way of keeping bands they are not authorized to use (device regulations cost money in each country) disabled in the hands of an end-user.
iphone usually supports all the bands everywhere ..even samsung has support to most of the bands... how come a company like oneplus doing so?

Question S22 Ultra USA/Can Snapdragon Bootloader Unlock?

I was thinking of getting a Google Fi phone unlocked... and it seems the best options are the Google 6 Pro or Ultra S22.
From what I can tell the S22 blows the Google phone out of the water but it has the stupid Samsung bootloader and software on it.
Can the S22 Ultra from USA/Can have the boot loader unlocked? Who's doing it and how much does it cost?
I like to run LineageOS on phones eventually and get really pissed with manufactures doing the bootloader lock.
Motorola, Google and One+ seem to be the only brands that don't suck for bootloader locks.
To my knowledge no Us S22 phone is bootloader unlockable.. I purchased mine from Samsung. It doesn't even have the OEM unlock option in developer mode..
Get the 6 Pro. The S22U is the better phone but if stock OS is not your bag, the Pixel will let you do what you want to do.
Has anyone tried using foreign (Exynos) versions of the S22 on US carriers (e.g. T-Mobile)? Are there any issues with band support?

It's missing band 71 so indoor and rural coverage will suffer and 5G will drain a lot more battery since it will only be able to use the n41 with bad signal propagation properties. That's assuming you get the 908E which is the best according to cacombos.

Question 5g on ROG Phone 5

I am having trouble with 5g on my ROG Phone 5 I have verified and reverified that I have 5g coverage with t mobile, that it's turned on in the phone, and that all the imei info on my phone is right. Get 4g but no 5g. I am rather new at this so if it's obvious I'm sorry but I didn't see this in any threads I searched for so I'm at a loss.

Are you in a 5g zone? Do any of your family or friends have 5g in that same area?
Even if all of that is a yes, the RoG Phone 5 only has two (out of 4) 5G bands on tmobile (n41 - 2500 and n71 - 600) so you would only be able to get 5G if the cell tower is using one of those bands in your area.
If the tower is using one of those bands and you still dont have 5G then I am at a loss. You can check tower info by using an app like "Network Cell Info Lite & WiFi" or something similar.
The 5G SA/NSA support for TMB and other US carriers are not good due to the lack of bands supported by phone itself (2 out of 4 for US variant, 1 out of 4 for EU and None for CN). had the same problem. No quick fix for it as you'll likely have to swap to a US version to be semi-fully compatible.
Sometimes you'll also need to enable SA in settings for it to have reception.
Another deep hole: even thought both regarded as WW, EU and US var actually have different supports and it's really hard to tell the diff

Yea ASUS is really weird with their versions and one of the hardest phones to figure out. Assuming OP has the US versions, he would have better luck with 5G on Verizon (5 out 7 bands). The global versions and even if you converted a CN version to WW will practically have no 5G.
I have the RoG Phone 5S Pro which has the same version issues as the regular Phone 5 and 5S. I have the US versions and use Verizon so I get pretty decent 5G service in the US.
