I have an old Alcatel Pixi 4 with Android 6.0 from which I'd like to back up my files. I've already copied all files from the internal storage except those inside the "Downloads" folder, which actually appears to be an app rather than a folder...and it's an utter mess: One can only open downloaded files, but there are absolutely no options to copy, move, rename or even delete anything, so this toxic app basically acts as a trap accumulating any file that has ever been downloaded while completely shutting the owner out.
How can I extract my downloaded files?
Note: The device is not rooted, but I have it hooked up with ADB.

Go to Playstore and install the MiXplorer app, it is a file manager, it should be able to open your downloads folder and copy/move/delete.
Or Try another file manager from the Playstore...

Well, if it shows as a downloads app, do you have a downloads app on your phone? If so, it should be able to open/access your files.
If you don't have a downloads app, see if you can install one.
Have you checked permissions of your explorer app to make sure it has the permissions it needs?
Have you checked your device settings to make sure your explorer app is allowed proper access? I seem to remember some specific settings that needed to be enabled/allow in Marshmallow, it has been a few years so I can't remember the specifics, but I remember having a series of settings that I had to setup every time I flashed a new ROM to make my 3rd party file manager work the way I needed it.
Have you tried the built file system as described below?
How to Use Android 6.0’s Built-in File Manager

How can it be wrong thread when the OP talks about a spy app pretending to be a folder? I was just clarifying about whats really going on & its not just happening in US rather the whole world. Yes I didn'tprovide a solution though.

well then I assume that the spy app will do more than locking you out of downloads folder as it is malicious, the hacker probably has much ambition, probably will sell my bank and credit card number on the dark web for a few spare kidneys? lol then if I were the OP I will disconnect it from any sort of internet and soak it in 99.95% military breaking bad grade hydrofloric acid, put it into a nuclear waste lead lined box for retired nukes, and hide myself in a suitcase in the cargo of a plane to north pole (just a nonsense joke but you get the idea)

I just briefly checked some screenshots online of stock Alcatel PIXI 4s...and I cannot find this "File Manager" anywhere. So maybe it isn't stock software after all?
However, I found this app at APKMirror:

File Manager-Easy & Smart v7.0.7.1.0656.1_06_0125 APK Download by mie-alcatel.support - APKMirror Free and safe Android APK downloads

And it says that it's from "mie-alcatel.support". Do you really think this is spyware?
[email protected]

looks like bloatware to me

Oh no...oh no...
What do I do??
The "File Manager" is listed there as well. And I thought that this phone was behaving strange...random reboots and the connection is always slow and showing "E" despite having an LTE contract (maybe to hide traffic that is constantly eating through my monthly data quota?).

Anyway...as you see, it's not always possible to completely ignore the political dimension when discussing INFOSEC. But to get back on topic: I think the information from Droidriven and OldNoobOne are complementary and spot-on:
1.) The "stock" Android version on the Alcatel PIXI 4 appears to come with malware disguised as a File Manager (mie-alcatel.support, 50 million installs):

}
The actual, built-in file manager is buried inside the settings which, in view of the "bundled" malicious File Manager app, points towards Alcatel/Nokia as culprits.
2.) Question: What do I do with this phone? Is there any way to reliably remove all spyware or would you suggest to just ditch this device? Would rooting and doing
Code:
adb shell pm uninstall
solve the issue?

Anyway, back to topic!
Question: Considering all the bundled malware on this device, can the files be accessed at all? Do I need to root it? Is it possible to somehow "sanitize" it? And is it even safe to connect it via USB to e.g. my laptop or server?
Stay on the line.....

Hey all,
I'm having some issues since upgrading my base from 4.2D to 4.2E. I'd post this in the relevant thread rule but, ah, there's that whole ten posts rule.
Ever since upgrading to 4.2E, for notifications I only get two choices - Silent or Facebook Pop. Below is a picture for reference.
Searching that thread, it seems no one else has this problem, which is VERY weird. I already tried fresh installing both the base and the update (yes, I'm on the latest 1405 update) but no dice.
Any idea how to make the regular list come back? Or, hell, just add one of my own (I don't particularly care for variety, just that Facebook Pop one's no better than silent!)

Read the first 3 postsin the roms thread. It tells you how to get them back
Sent from my SGS 2 LTE running SkyICS
Am I just stupid? I followed those steps EXACTLY (just re-did them, even), then tried "extracting zmods" (which is the most ambiguous direction ever - where do I extract that zip to?) but still saw no audio either in my notifications menu or in the extracted files. Searching the thread offered no help. I can't possibly be the only one with this issue.

lol it is a little difficult to understand at first but once you get it it all makes sense... Are you flashing the update from the int sd or ext? You need to flash that from the ext sd card for it to put the folders on your card. From there, there should be a Media folder. You can either take the sounds from there that you want and paste them to system/media/etc or just leave them there and you can use a file explorer to find your sounds on the card...
If you don't want to flash again, you can open the update file and extract the media folder to your ext sd. If you transfer back to system/media, be careful how many you transfer as there might not be enough room...

Here is what i did and it worked, i am followed some direction from in the mod thread , so this is not my work just how i figured it out. I would be considered a noob too.
1-Use root explorer (app)
2-open sd card folder
3-find the zip of your latest update (mine has two for some reason one with data inside and another without, you want the one with data)
4-long press the zip and extract all
5-Go to extracted
6-open the file for your update
7-open sdcard folder
8-open media folder
8-long press audio folder and select move
9-back arrow to /sdcard (at the top of the screen)
10- select media and move the audio file there
11 reboot
worked for me.
this is where i got the idea.

Is it possible to tell the device to look in the external sd card for the media files? I put them on the external sd card (like the instructions state - at least I think they do) in the media then either ringtones or notifications, rebooted and they still do not show up. Thanks in advance.

I'm going to show you how to edit a data file and enable as many lives and/or moves as you desire. At least this way you know it's clean and you don't have to adjust your time/calendar. @ 8/2/13 my girlfriends calendar was set to 2/5/13...she plays it alot
Does this method also allows you to connect to Facebook? Yes.
Does this method also allows you to update and buy power-ups? Yes [Read F.A.Q.]

Linked at the top is a zip file containing a simple .bat file and key/keystore to sign and zipalign your apk, provided you have java and android sdk tools in your path variable.

Open a cmd and type "java", If you see java version you have it installed and in your path variable. Do the same with "zipalign".
You dont have it??
Follow the instructions >>here<< for java and android sdk.
Instructions:
Extract the folder and drop in the apk to sign.
Open the "sign and zip.bat". Enter 1 to choose apk, then select option 2 to sign.
When finished signing you will be prompted to press any key to zipalign.
Done, install and enjoy.
DO NOT USE THIS KEY TO SIGN AND UPLOAD TO THE ANDROID MARKET AS IT IS A PUBLIC KEY!
Credits to Daneshm for some of the code i took and modified from apkmanager used in my sign and zip.bat.

It happened to me earlier when i was tinkering with xml's.
Try
un-installing.
reboot
install from the play store and restore your saved data if applicable
this worked for me.
@lokenok, the power-ups must be hidden away somewhere out of sight like the smali files, which unfortunately is beyond my limited capabilities.
On a different note i think i've discovered how to increase moves for levels.

I've searched everywhere and can't find anything on the sprint SPH-P500.
Does anyone know of any guides out there? I don't want to risk bricking it with a root from another model number. Thanks for all your hard work guys.much appreciated!
Do you have your stock rom? If you do, try rom for GT-5100 but you will not have 4G capability...
And if it don't work, you go in download mode and then restore your old stock rom thank to odin!
I guess everyone has forgotten about our tablet
I've never done anything on the coding side. But if someone could give me some guidance, I'd be willing to attempt to port some of the greatness that all of the other tablets are getting.
Its a great undertaking. I do website development and have linux experience and would rater not touch rom development. I have been interested though.
As far as the gt builds, i can give that a try. I dont have 4g in my area anyways,. Ill just have to become comfortable with odin before i do anything. Thanks!
Has there been any update on this? Looked around and doesn't look like there is even a developer working on it.
I can't even find the stock firmware for the SPH-P500.05 to download. I'm about to see if a sprint store will give me the file so I can start experimenting. If someone has a link to the stock firmware for this device it would be great. Maybe I'll get my hands dirty and make a few attempts and maybe get a guide going.

I understand that CVE-2013-2094 has been ported to work (escalate to r00t) on Android devices. I don't know if this model has "performance events" turned on but, if so, could this be an opportunity to get # on our tablets?
Also, I have a way to kick off processes as system. Could that help us?

I need to subscribe to this thread. Sorry about the delay. I have been playing with the idea of flashing the GT-5100 firmware, but there is no way back to stock if things go bad. I think I'm going to be more proactive and talk with the local Sprint store to see if I can get that firmware / bin from them. The fact that the development community for this device is so dead is a bit eerie.

Haha, sorry about that. I will test it tonight. Maybe write up a script to automate this. Thank you so much for sharing this information.

I can also confirm cydia impactor works and is really as easy as downloading to pc run impactor hit startband it installsnsuper su right to the root of the tablet after that I have been able to successfully install (titanium, busybox, , link2sd, rom manager) and they all have root access
I have also been able to download mobile terminal and at $ prompt put in (su) and # should show letting you know you now have root access
after that I have also been able to change the default storage to ext2 by using. pm set-install-location 2, from # prompt and using link2sd to move apps 2 extsdcard for those of you that have an 8 gigger like I do I hope this helps im still alittle new to android
Any custom roms found for this tablet? I googled and I could only find rooting method but no custom roms (e.g. kitkat) for this tablet. Can the P5100 ones be used instead? I don't need the 4G service.
cydia impactor isnt recognizing the device. usb drivers fully installed and all that... kinda weird
nevermind. it worked!!! now i just need to install recovery and find a darn ROM LoL
I just received my Sprint SPH-500, and wouldn't have known it's a nonstandard Galaxy Tab 2 variant without this thread. I rooted mine with Towelroot, so I still have a locked bootloader, but full root access. AFAIK, my flash counter hasn't been triggered.
Here;s a screen capture of my downloading screen. It shows I haven't done a custom binary download (what triggers the flash counter), and I'm not running a custom binary, as I'm running the Samsung Official binary. But it does show my system status is custom..

I should have progress to report on moving apps to my external sdcard and second partition soon.
After experimenting with Link2SD for more than a week, I gave up on it. It's just too unstable to be a daily driver. I only have the 8 GB model, and run several large data astronomy and birding apps, They left me with 800 MB free RAM on my internal SD storage, and I still had other apps to install.
Link2SD put apks, Dalvik-cache, and lib files on the second partition of my external SDCard, but lost the links a reboot or two later. It claimed to move 1.8 GB of files, but showed 14 GB of RAM used on my second partition. It lost user and system apps that were linked, unlinked, and lost, for instance, the Google Play Store Services.
I ended up using a symlinking app called Foldermount, similar to the old (unsupported) Directory Bind app. It stores data folders on my external SDCard, and symlinks them so my astronomy and birding apps think they're still stored on the internal SDCard. I've got all my apps installed, and still have nearly 3 GB internal SDCard RAM free.
I have tried to flash apollo kernel into my samsung s2 neatrom 4.4.4 today in order to fix the FP bug of this ROM.
It is written in apollo thread that before flashing apollo kernel Im supposed to do kernel wipe by using of Gs2KernelWipe. This wipe was obsolete and I was redirected here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4/i9505-develop/cwm-twrp-util-hawkernelwipe-kernel-wipe-t3064146
I downloaded from there the file HawkernelWipe.zip and copied it into my device. Problem was that my recovery wasnt able to find that file.
I found out that it is in reality HawkernelWipe.zip.exe and I thouht that I have to first unzip it in my computer so I run that HawkernelWipe.zip.exe and the result was that my nod 32 antivirus found 15 infiltration in my comuter, my brosers were attaced and various software was installed in my computer.
I thought that XDA developers is trusted site. Why do you put malware into your files?

The Blue Download now is the correct link.
Btw with any filter on your pc you wouldn't be able to download it at all.
Never download a zip file that ends with a .exe
That is not from XDA's site, it's from the download link, Dev Host. Yes, Dev Host has become spammy. But there are 2 download buttons, and one takes you directly to the download file. The other has spam. It's not an ideal site these days, but as it does have a safe link to download from, it is permitted.
You should be able to uninstall/clean anything that was installed. It's not viruses, it's malware. Can be easily cleaned with a virus scanner or malware remover.
And as said above, be very careful ever clicking an .exe file you download from anywhere.
The blue Download Now button on Dev Host should be fine. :good:

As stated xda-developers has nothing to do with external links that you click. Xda-developers host is only that which you find under download tabs of DevDB threads. Some host sites like Dev-host have a download button that includes an installer that installs extra programs. If you are supposed to get a zip and end up with an exe beware. Go back and use the other download button. XDA cannot protect everyone from every possible issue. Instead of blaming xda, ask the OP of that thread to please switch to a less confusing host.
@Samuelgentl u can download from Dev Host by CM browser & this browser is the best for downloading from this host .
here is link
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ksmobile.cb
U should click on blue tap then its will download mate & from ur PC/Laptop u can download by using firefox browser just mate tap on blue icon then the file will downloaded completely okay..

All the files I have downloaded from the links which I have gotten from XDA developer site including Apollo kernel 7.3, HawkernelWipeV1.02 and GS2KernelWipeV2.09.zip were blocked by mozilla firefox like potential threats. Because I believe that XDA developer is trusted site I had to switch off mozilla block an also my anti-virus. Who could have anticipated that links on XDA developers site could be so dangerous. Why anybody upload his files to such malicious file hosting servers in the first place.

You need to use common sense and good judgment with anything you download online. Even links that members use on XDA.
And if they upload something to XDA directly, it's a safe direct download.
Members choose their download host.... XDA tries to be sure those links are safe... But Moderators can't be everywhere.... So we rely on members to report anything suspicious.
But again, common sense, good judgement, an ad blocker, pop up blocker and virus scanner are all good ideas when downloading anything on the net. But at the end of the day, we are all responsible for what we flash or install, and where we download from....at our own risk. That's how it is in this hobby. :good:
I also think the OP has got his explanation. No need to beat a dead horse.
Thread closed now.
Thanks,
Darth

[NEW] Installing apps on a Gabb Phone Z2?
YOU CAN NOW ACCESS THE INTERNET ON YOUR GABB PHONE. However, you still can't mod or get apps on it. Here's a tutorial on how to access the internet. Video Tutorial made by Hezy: Tutorial may not be current, so check the text tutorial. Text...

[ORIGINAL POST]Obviously, yes, the gabb phone is meant for little kids and such for their first phone. However, it definitely is running android, and probably could be tampered with. If you're wondering what I really need, I mostly talk to people using discord.
Here's what I've tried so far. There is no way (from the file manager) to install .apk files. All it does is tell me that there's no app to open the file with. I have also tried to head over to the bootloader, by holding down the power button and volume down button. I'm fine with no social media, but there is wifi on it, so I was assuming if I could find a way to just get an apk on there, then it would work fine. Also, with the new update, you can see more folders of the phone instead of the standard, PTP thing.

I can't enable developer settings or anything like that. Looks like they've done a good job locking it down.
If anyone has ANY idea at all of how to install apps of any kind on this, please reply.
YOO NIKKO IDK HOW I FOUND U BUT I DID LMAO. I WAS GOOGLING HOW TO INSTALL LIKE APPS ON THAT PHONE JUST IN CASE I GET IT FOR MY FIRST PHONE AND THIS POPPED UP LMAOOOOO
Well if you are reading this, look up how to watch youtube on gabb phone tutorial to learn how to transfer files. If you download an apk on computer, go to computer, press show in folder after downloading apk, copy the file, plug in the charging cord to the gabb and a pc usb, and press this pc in your files, gabb phone, downloads, and paste it. If you go into my files on your gabb, you can go to it but there is no package installer, and if you could download a software or something similar to a package installer, than you could download any app.
It says no app to run this

Maybe if you could run an emulator or jailbreak the gabb phone. Maybe if you could transfer a apk installer file from your computer. Maybe through downloading some app or game on an sd card on a different phone and then putting the sd card in the gabb phone. Maybe you could download android software and transfer it to the phone. If you could run an android emulator that would be the best option.

So, I have figured out how to access recovery mode. But you are not able to access the bootloader from there, although you can update from an sd card or adb debugging if u know-how.

PLEASE HELP ME I NEED TO KNOW MY DUDE
I found a file in android known as .nomedia it might have something to do with it.
You may be right, because The use of naming a file NOMEDIA is to keep the device from scanning that particular folder. Apps sometimes hide ads in that folder so they don't get deleted. So gabb may be hiding crucial files in that folder, although you will need an external app to manage NOMEDIA utilities. such as studiokuma.
I have noticed that when you hard reset your gabb phone it will show make you agree to the terms of service. if you click read terms of service it will take you to a the ZTE page, but upon closer inspection it is in a web browser, where you can acces youtube, instagram, etc.. BUTTTT you cannot login to your google play account because the keyboard is disabled.
Just wondering if anyone has made progress on this? I have tried almost everything at this point
Tried unlocking bootloader from fastboot (I get `Unlock failed` errors on the device side. Something about it be not allowed?)
Right now my goal is to get USB debugging enabled and go from there
I have basically tapped every setting at least 100 times and still no debug mode
You all are going to laugh at me but I contacted Gabb claiming my son (me) has figured out how to download apps onto the Gabb phone and the assistant lady was all supprised and was like can you send me a picture and so I was like my son is not letting me. Anyways she said she was going to escalate it with her supervisor so like that I know how to do it. Once I know how you all will be the second peoples to know!

I am currently stuck around this part as well. I was able to reboot into recovery mode by holding the power and volume up button till the screen starts up. I attempted using adb debugging's install command (can be found here), but I ran into a "server client error", notifying me that the server client versions don't match up. I have no idea what that means. I will need to do some further research, but this is what I have so far to contribute to our "noble" cause.
P.S. I forgot to take screenshots of the errors (my bad), but I'll do some research on adb then try again and share the errors (hopefully no errors).

I have a stock FW image that I could maybe patch to have USB debugging enabled
Only issue is I can't flash it because the bootloader is locked

Hi,
The .nomeadia file is a config file that allows you to hide/show gallery albums. It in no way is connected to the topic.
Cheers!

How did you get the "Unlock failed" error?
The only options are:
1. Reboot System Now
2. Enter Recovery
3. Reboot to bootloader
4. Power off
