[GUIDE] How to fix Google Play system update not updating or being stuck - General Topics

Hello. I have seen lots of complaints regarding Google Play system update being stuck, and no further updates being offered at all.
After researching, I discovered a splendidly simple solution—logging out all but one Google account on the phone, clearing Google Play services data, and trying again.
The Main Components APK that other threads suggest is malicious. Do not install such APKs.Threads are suggesting installing an APK called "Main Components", saying that it'll update your device. Do not believe such claims—all it does is change the date shown on your phone. It's very small and does not require restarting to install, proving the ineffectiveness of this app. It also causes versioning issues and incompatibility, and in extreme cases, will brick your device.
In case you have already installed the app, uninstall it immediately via the following ADB command:
adb uninstall com.google.android.modulemetadata
Fixing the Google Play system updateSTEP 1: Update Google Play services to the latest version.
Spoiler: Update Google Play services to the latest version
On your phone, open this page with the Google Play Store, then tap on "Update". If that button does not show up, then Google Play services is updated already.
STEP 2: Leave only one Google account signed in on your phone.
Spoiler: Leave only one Google account signed in on your phone
If you have more than one Google account signed in on your phone, sign out the other accounts and leave the one you often use. Make sure that this account is not a Personal Account (not from your school/work).
For instructions on how to see the accounts on your device and to sign out them, see here.
STEP 3: Clear Google Play services' data and restart the phone.
Spoiler: Clear Google Play services' data and restart the phone
Note: Do not uninstall updates of Google Play services.
Important: When you clear Google Play Services data or storage, it may delete some information saved to your device, including transit cards, COVID cards, and virtual payment cards saved to Google Pay.
On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app.
Tap Apps > See all apps. Note that you do not need to tap "See all apps" on Samsung devices.
Scroll down and tap "Google Play Services."
Tap Storage > Clear Cache.
Tap Manage Space > Clear all Data. Note that "Manage Space" is called "Manage Storage" instead on Samsung devices.
Restart your device.

STEP 4: Check for Google Play system updates again and hope for the best.
Spoiler: Check for Google Play system updates again and hope for the best
Now go check for Google Play system updates again. There should be an update, follow the prompts to download and install it. After installation, it should prompt you to restart. If not, tap on "Check for updates" again and it shall prompt you to restart. After restarting, check if the update was successfully installed. If yes, congrats, you have successfully updated!

Sorry to hear that. Can you detail step-by-step how you followed the guide, and on which Play system update level (the date) are you currently on?

Make what you write. I have May.

I have used this guide to fix my phone stuck on March 2022, and it was upgraded to May 2022. The June update has not yet been rolled out to most phones for now.

Pixel Phones get June and i have a Pixel 6.

Oh, I have a Samsung phone and Samsung phones often receive updates later, maybe that's why I'm still on May.
Maybe there's a different problem on your phone, have you updated the firmware to the latest version?

I am on latest firmware. You write "Main Components APK that other threads suggest is malicious" But how do you know that? apkmirror.com dont share malicious!

Not malicious in a malware sense, but it causes further problems and is useless, unless if you want to fool yourself into some placebo update.

That apk doesn't do no harm to your phone but it doesn't do any good also; it only changes the date.

For me this process does nothing. I already tried lot of methods without luck. My phone had no issues on Android 10 but after Android 11 the Google Play System update went nuts, I use only one Google account. I tried to factory reset the phone, clearing data/cache for Play Store, Play Services (updated), going to Safe mode and clear these data/caches but nothing works. I tried to go beta for Google Play Services but no luck. It is just frustrating because I not modified the ROM of the phone and the Unihertz manufacturer cant help me, I also reported this issue several times to Google Support, but the best effort was from them to ask videos about the issue. I got no response after my report. This is just nuts from Google, seriously unprofessional. They marketed the Android 10,11 with this update, to provide basic security updates for every phone and they cannot provide it at all for lot of users facing this issue. You can search about this and this is independent from manufacturers, the issue is in Android 11 probably.

Tried this myself.
Still on June 2022 Play Update on Android 12.
I expected July at least. And August should also be out any moment now.

How can you call com.google.android.modulemetadata aka main components as malicious? It is one of the component introduced as project mainline. Have some research before posting,
Project Mainline - https://www.xda-developers.com/android-project-mainline-modules-explanation/
Module Metadata aka Main Components - https://source.android.com/docs/core/architecture/modular-system/metadata
When you install this to system, it parse information from playstore/services apk since google push the system updates through playstore and services apk (latest here) and updates the same in the UI. Installing this won't install system updates but it shows the right system version you are on. Works only with devices showing wrong system update due to a factory reset.
I know you are trying to help, but make sure to use the right wordings.
Thanks!

How to disable automatic updates? After update my Xiaomi Mi A2 with Android 13 Port from Pixel 5 freezing and overheating.
If i delete /data/apex/ folder and reboot everything works fine.

This issue is certainly after Android 11 and 12, the downgrade to Android 10 solved the issue for me, with Android 10 the Google Play System Update works flawlessly. Also the Android 11 has GUI performance, high cpu usage and battery drain issues. Unnaceptable from today standards, I hope one day I can get a good Android device that works just fine.

I'm on Android 13 and this didn't help me. I'm still on June 22, and there's even October already available.

It's now almost November 2022 - Google Has Failed To Resolve The Problem. And this issue started after May 1st 2021.
I have a 5g Nokia and T-Mobile. This guessing game gives me the chills - like some victim in a twisted B rated film's plot about a blackout that selects randomly targets made to be blind for no reason at all.
The only tip I've got is T-Mobile Apps are not working with the newer Google Play Services system updates???

Pointers on how to run Google services on a Chinese market Android phone

Hey all,
I bought a LG V10 on my country’s gray market last week and realized too late that it was a H968 model, i.e. made for the Chinese market and without any Google service installed. Since returning the device is not an option, I’m stuck trying to get it to work.
It was initially on firmware H96810b-CMT-CN (Android 5.1.1, build number LMY47V, security patch level October 2015) but I managed to download and flash H96810d-CMT-CN (Android 5.1.1, build number LMY47V, security patch level January 2016) which seems to be the latest version available anywhere. I don’t dare flash another V10 model’s firmware due to being afraid of an unrecoverable hard brick.
I’ve also tried to unlock the bootloader, but so far no dice. I’ve already ticked the correct boxes in the Developer options, but adb reboot bootloader only reboots the phone normally, and the volume down+power method starts in factory reset mode instead. As a result, I think anything requiring a custom recovery or root is outside my reach. Custom ROMs for H968 don’t seem to exist either.
Anyway, I managed to sideload many of the Google APKs onto the phone in an attempt to get Google services working:
Backup Transport 5.1
Account Manager 5.1 *
Contacts Sync 5.1
Calendar Sync 5.1
Google Services Framework 4.4.4 **
Google Services 12.6.88
Google Play 10.3.12 ***
I’ve marked the problem packages with stars.
* Account Manager 5.0 or 5.1 don’t display any message errors but fail to load the login page while trying to enter a Google account. I bypassed that by downgrading to 4.4.4, creating the account, then upgrading the package back to 5.1. That seems to work.
** GSF 5.0 and 5.1 cause endless “Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped.” messages that cause the phone to be unusable until I uninstall GSF. GSF 4.4.4 is the most recent version of GSF that works without any error, which is weird for a 5.1.1 device.
*** Maybe linked to the previous error, but while most common Google apps (Search, Drive, GBoard, Keep, Calendar, Tasks) seem to work and sync fine under the current setup, I can’t log into the Play Store at all. I only get the infamous “Error retrieving information from server. [RH-01]”. Clearing caches and data doesn’t work, the error even happens on a fresh install after a factory reset. I’ve tried versions of Play Store as old as 8.7, 7.9 and even 5.5 but they all show that error. Unfortunately this means that most of my paid apps can’t be downloaded on this phone, or can’t check that I’ve already used in-app purchases to unlock paid features.
Any pointers would be welcome for how I could solve those issues.
Update: still no change except to notice that push notifications work randomly. FB lite and Telegram notifications work, Twitter/Discord/Hangouts notifications don’t. Google Services crash regularly, but not to the point of rendering the phone unusable.
I’ve been able to install apps using Yalp, but any app requiring access to the billing/in-app purchase service is unable to do so.

Google Play system update available (Android 10) - does not install automatically

I don't actually know what this is, but it doesn't seem to update automatically, which seems strange for something with "security" in the name.
Settings -> Security -> Google Play system update
After updating mine says 1 May 2020.
The update was tiny... and a reboot was not required.
Google says "With Google Play system updates, important Security and Privacy fixes can now be sent directly to your phone from Google Play, just the same way all your other apps update. So you get these fixes as soon as they are available."
This month's update was empty. Maybe that's why it didn't auto update.
https://source.android.com/security/bulletin/2020-05-01
There are no security issues addressed in Google Play system updates (Project Mainline) this month.

It's basically what we knew as the monthly security patch, but in 10 it's handled through GPlay instead of OTA update.
Its a good thing, it means that even if Xiaomi abandons the updates, we will still get the security patches from Google.
My understanding is that the Google Play system security is not the same thing as OS security patch, so still down to Xiaomi, unfortunately

I agree; but since this terminal has not received any updates since March, can we consider its support finished?
It installed automatically on my own. Didnt do anything.

GMS (New Installation) not working on Mate 30 or any other Huawei as of 25.7.2020.

Any one having this issue where it is stuck on signing in or playstore crashing to the main screen after installing gsfid, please post here. Also please post a workaround for this. Thanks.
Tried on
P40 pro Latest Build 10.1
Mate 30 pro Build 10.1 and 10.0
LZplay not working any more. Need alternative.
It seems the LZplay not working any more, check the attached pictures (before 24 july & after) some app privileges has been changed.
We are looking for altenative solutions that can push Google services API in to OS.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks
usually the "apps" are not being installed as normal apps, but that's now the case.
Try setting the date to 20.june and retry, worked for me to install it normally
EDIT, yeah just tried...
so
1st - restore
2nd - date to 20.june or similar
3rd run that chinese helper app
proceed with normal routine
change date back for login...obviously..
change date to 20.june for proceed
install gsf
(whenever you login or seek for live data (playstore)), use the real date

Now not working as of 11th August 2020
Google id login shows cannot communicate with google server. Any ideas
Hello guys... Since September 11, I'm trying to install the Google services in my Mate 30 Pro. I had already the apps installed (since 2019) and I was intented to give this phone to my mom, and, as I bought another phone for me, I reseted my LIO-L29. There's where the nightmare starts. I think I have tried almost (if not all) tutorials, packs of files, procedures, downgrades, and everything that I know, and what I didn't know (what I learned this 3 days).
Resuming, I don't know anymore what to do. The phone was in version 10.0.1.240, downgraded to 10.0.0.157, but no success anyway.
Anyone had tried some procedure in last days, and worked?
All procedures fail in some part, almost all, at add de Google account, when you "froze" in the sign in page and install the Google service framework, the phone should back after that with the Google account logged in, but no success.
Please, if someone can help me, I will VERY GRATEFUL.
Thanks

Huawei P40 Lite / JNY-LX1 - Google Services problem

Hello, excuse me posting this wall of text but I have some problems with my P40 Lite / JNY-LX1. Let me explain to you how all problems started:
- I have bought the phone with some firmware, I think it was emui11 or so (I can't remember the exact version), almost 2 years ago. To install Google Play Services, I had to rollback to 10.0.1.167. Everything worked perfectly, done with HiSuite back then, the install of GPS was done with Googlefier app, everything worked from the first try, notifications and all apps. Even the updates to G.P. Services and G.P. Store were up to date to the latest versions, even the firmware was to the latest 12.0.0.237 (emui12). Time passed by till 4 days ago when I had to change my Google Account password, I did that on my Desktop. Now using the phone became a mess because google logged me out of my account requesting the new password. When I tried to log back in the account the app would crash or throw out errors like Can't reach google servers or something like that.
- The first tought of it was to downgrade again to 10.0.1.167. For the beginning I had to use HiSuite to downgrade to 10.1.0.399, then I had to use the dload otg cable method cause the install won't proceed. Everything fine, downgraded to 167 with success.
- Installed again the Googlefier app downloaded from apkmirror and proceed to install GPServices. Somehow I managed to install it by using the ictfix method, managed to get rid of the errors. But now, the Google Play Store and the Google Play Services would update themselves to the latest versions after a few hours (10hrs or so) which makes them show the all time "This device isn't Play Protect certified". To solve this error I have to reinstall the GPServices app and GPStore again.
-I tried to do it with airplane mode on, internet off, different versions of the GPServices app, with the "Auto-Update apps - Don't update apps" settings in the store checked in, but still after a few hours the apps update themselves to the latest versions.
-- Apologies for making you read this wall of text but I wanted to make sure you understand my problems. Now my question is: Does anybody know a solution for this problem? Something to stop the apps updating to the latest versions? I have to say that this thing happens even if stay on 167 or if I upgrade to emui12.
Many thanks to all of you who took from their times to read this !!
I had the same issue with the This device isnt play protect certified, i basically used the newest ictfix.net method to get rid of it, its basically a mix of Google Play Services Apks and a mix of erasing google play apps data to make it work..
https://ictfix.net/google-for-huawei/ go to this link and select /5/9/2022/ APKCOMBO. Follow this tutorial.

I did this but it comes up again after 24hrs or so. The only fix i have figured out is to use an older version of google play services, this way it won't update itself back to the newest that shows up device is not certified. The only problem i have with it is that instagram message notification won't show up, and push notifications for ig and some other apps not all, come up with delay.

Android 12 update, amazon appstore, hearthstone

Hello dear community,
I updated my LG G8S to Android 12 yesterday. After the update, an app (Hearthstone) that I installed via the Amazon Store was no longer available (the icon on the desktop was grayed out, it is no longer listed under the installed apps in the system menu). If I now go to the Amazon Store and open the app there, it offers me to install the app. If I press it, it first downloads the app, but then doesn't install it. I guess because he notices during the installation that the data from the app is still there. In the Amazon Store, he then changes from "install" to "update". I press on it, download again, then nothing. Probably because he notices that the update is somehow already there. Then it changes from "update" to "open". If I then want to open the app, it doesn't work, probably because Android doesn't know anything about the installation. Then the Amazon store jumps back to "install".
Hearthstone can no longer be installed via the Google Playstore, because Google probably also checks that something is still there.
Presumably the solution is simply to unload the rest of the app. But since Android doesn't have the app on the screen, it doesn't work with it. So I would have to do it manually somehow, but I'm afraid that I'll miss something if I just delete a few folders. Can you enlighten me on the best way to do this?
I installed the SD Maid app. This actually recognizes an app called "com.blizzard.wtcg.hearthstone". When I try to uninstall the app with SD Maid I get the message "The app was not found in the list of installed apps." The app still remains in SD Maid's list.
thanks in advance
Alex
Run SD Maid Pro edition to remove orphaned files and invalid file entries.
If you aren't on an Amazon device download Hearthstone app ( 24.6.154818 update ) from APKPURE.
Both didn't help. When I try to install fron apk Android shows an error, that it is conflict with an existing package.

I created an account here as this has to be the worst recommendation ever, doing a factory reset because one app won't install :/

I've been to the blizzard forum of course. There has been an issue, that they told has been solved already, when my problem was still there. So I thought, thats not for me. But yes they posted, that it's solved on saturday and surprisingly it was indeed.
