I try using USB cord, but it sporatically connects, so no good.
I try using SFTP, but it konks out after a few files.
I can't imagine that bluetooth is any better.
There only PC to android solution that seems to work is taking the SD card and physically inserting into the PC, transferring the files, then putting it back in the android.

Nope "taking the SD card and physically inserting into the PC" is way more faster, right..
adb works over cable or tcpip. requires usb-debugging enabled

If it was the cable, then why is wifi transfer messed up? oh well...it's probably beyond me to fix whatever the problem is. I'll just have to keep re-copying them untill all 12,000 files are copied.
it's common issue and well known that Microsoft USB MTP protocol doesn't work well on android, so it's not your fault.
use adb it's fast and stable. there are several 3rd party sync tools for adb available too (you don't need)

The maximum speed of a data transfer depends on these 3 factors:
1. read speed on source device
2. transfer speed - wired and/or wireless
3. write speed on target device
The slowest of these 3 speeds is the fastest achievable transfer speed

I'm fed up with the clunky way which bluetooth transfers files between my MS laptop and my HTC Touch Pro (and any other device it would seem).
I'm fed up with three or four attempts to get it to work in the first place, I'm fed up with having to approve every single data connection - I have after all paired the devices, please just transfer the files.
Does anyone know of a decent bit of software, either winmo or Windoze that will allow me to browse the other device, grab or send the files I want and just do it without all the fuss I seem to be getting?

I had it, but couldn't get it to work on an ad-hoc (peer to peer) connection, then it stopped working altogether.

maybe you should just get a usb card reader. or an adapter if your laptop has a card reader already.
I have a USB card reader, and leads to connect the phone to the computer, but this is the 21st century folks, and I have two devices that can connect without wires, but it's about as easy, and friendly as, well, something that isn't easy or friendly.
The phone should see the computer, and vice versa, and file transfer should be as easy as if they were the same device.

but regardless of speed I have looked for this as well, there are apps that let you transfer files to the phone over wifi but have not seen one that lets it act as a network drive ... yet ....
The HTC network plugin lets you map a drive on your phone though ....
So would you recommend:
a. remove micro sd and use an adapter
b. use usb cable and choose mass storage drive

Are there any other methods of high speed file transfer that i am unaware of ?
I don't know what to do about this sudden problem. I've had my transformer since early May with the dock. I've never had any trouble connecting to any computer via the usb cable until this past weekend. Now all of a sudden it won't even show as connected when the tablet is connected to the dock.
So I tried it directly connected to the tablet and it will connect and come up on the computer but most of the time it kicks out after a little bit or when loading the files in a folder it just gets stuck loading and will not move so I can't move files to it.
I know I can transfer files with things like dropbox, but I move files every day and don't feel like fighting with the transformer for a half hour every day to get files where I want them when under normal circumstances I can move them in seconds via usb.
I tried calling support but all I got was a bunch of BS about needing to install all the software from their site which I actually did and it didn't fix anything.
Both computers I normally use are Windows 7 64 bit machines.
Anyone run into a similar issue? Any ideas?

Try enable USB debugging.
Go to Settings --> Applications --> Development --> Check box for USB Debugging.
There's fews options you can (Do a backup first) try:
1) Reset to factory settings.
2) Format your microSD.
3) Re-flash the ROM.
Besides there's many ways to transfer files from Asus pad to PC.
Wireless Transfer.
FTP Transfer.
Wireless or FTP.
OP, sorry to hear about the issue. In the instances where you are able to connect via USB, if you leave it alone (don't' touch it), then can it complete the transfer? Since the Transformer uses the same connector to charge and transfer, I'm just wondering if the connector is physically getting lose or something.
When I had the transformer, I usually use the micro-SD card to transfer files. But that's just me.

Not to criticize your idea or be a jerk...but what does that mean? I don't think 1) wireless transfer and 2)FTP transfer counts as two different methods of transfer. That's like calling USB and "drag-and-drop" two different ways of transferring stuff to devices. Wireless is wireless, whether you're using a FTP protocol or just downloading using the browser.

I had a similar issue when (but before) I rooted my TF. My Windows 7 64-bit machines wouldn't notice my device unless debugging was enabled and then I couldn't "safely" disconnect the device unless I disabled debugging.
I'm not quite sure what the issue is there but that is how I connect and disconnect.
Thanks for the reply. USB debugging was already turned on so I tried without it. No luck. I'm on hold with support again. If nothing comes from it I guess I will need to reformat. I never rooted so I doubt it's a rom issue.
As I was typing they said to download and install the latest firmware. I've kept this thing up to date, but I guess it's worth a try.

I got it to work one time. Every other time it just gets stuck loading the content of the folder. If I try to add anything it just sits there as it seems to be waiting for it finish loading. It's just so weird as it has worked perfectly for two months now and then all of the sudden it stopped working. I would maybe understand if there was an update or something but nothing's changed on the tablet or the computers.
I have the same issue with my usb and EVERY device. It all started when I updated the usb drivers with the nvflash certificate. Now when I want to use a usb device or my on board card reader I have to uninstall the general usb driver in the windows device manager, and for new devices. Only then will it recognize whatever I may have conected.

oh the weird usb issues I've seen. Right now my system says that it doesn't have drivers for my vibrant and yet I can connect it and access it perfectly
Try format your microSD yet? Use SD Formatter 3.0.

With wireless (using Wifi File Explorer), you just enter the asus epad (ip address) on the browser to download/upload/etc... files from your asus pad.
With FTP, you will need install ftp client on your windows to access files on your device.

Windows XP and newer versions already have an FTP client - Windows Explorer.
I use the free "Software Data Cable" app. It creates the FTP server on your Transformer, and gives you the address to type into Windows Explorer.
It works great! You can transfer files using your PC, which is a lot easier than doing it on the Transformer.
I haven't used the USB connection since!
Thanks for the replies. I think this thing needs to be rma'd. I just did a factory reset and it's still having issues. I managed to get it connected only through a direct connection and it won't even let me create a folder. It's getting a little late to do it now so I'll call asus tomorrow morning and get it started.
I've been using Z3 till now, there was an option for USB Mass Storage mode, which simply emulated sd card as pen drive. I could simply transfer any file I wanted with the highest speed possible!
This option is gone in XZ Premium, and the way I see it the only method available now is MTP (which sucks massively, words can't describe how bad this protocol is)
So my question is, what can I do to transfer any file I want at top speed to my phone? This is 2017, I've bought high speed SD card, I can't believe I'm stuck with MTP that goes around 5MB/s... There has to be a way for legit file transfer...

I wouldn't call wifi a solution to that, I'm going to use a high speed sd card too to transfer 4k movies and stuff back and forth so I'd like to know this myself too.
Looks like Sony is providing USB 2.0 cable with Sony XZ Premium (UCB20 is USB 2.0), this is one of the reasons of low transfer speeds.

Mass storage mode transfer is a thing of the past for good reason. Your phone, under such a mode, would present its internal storage to the computer to mount up and use as if it were a thumb drive. Trouble is, very few file systems support concurrent read/write mounting by multiple computers, and you won't find any of those that do on a phone. So, when in mass storage mode, the computer must be given exclusive access to the storage, meaning the phone cannot access it. Obviously, this wouldn't work if the phone had to give up exclusive access to important system files, so this lead to the two partition system whereby important stuff was on an OS partition unavailable as mass storage and user data was on an 'sdcard' partition. That partition sizing was set at the factory and couldn't be changed without root and often kernel work, and it usually wasted a ton of space on the OS partition because OEMs are necessarily conservative there. Also, it restricted what file systems OEMs could use for the sdcard partition as your computer is unlikely to understand file systems like ext3/4. So the sdcard partition was quite often fat32, which has a few downsides. Firstly, Microsoft do hold patents there that they enforce, so licensing is needed. Secondly, it is an archaic and crappy file system with limitations like no single file larger than about 4GB. Not a great plan in 2017 - I don't think I even have any movies that small on disk anymore.
All that said, I don't see the problem with MTP. If it's slow for you, it's likely because you're using the supplied cable, which is USB version 2, so slow. I slung about 15 GB or so of film onto my phone yesterday through a USB 3.1 cable in under a minute. It's definitely the fastest USB transfer to a phone I've ever experienced.

I have now tested a lot of different solutions for file transfers.
None of the ones emulating a network card and making SMB share worked.
Finally I landed on some FTP server apps.
Now I use "WiFi Pro FTP Server" as this one had best performance out of the ones I tested.
With performance I mean time until directory content (~3.000 jpeg files) is displayed by FTP client. This one takes about half a minute where crap MTP via USB took more than 5 minutes (with new, high quality USB 3.0 cable!).
I have notebook and phone in different WiFi bands to increase performance. Transfer speed is about 4-10MB/s so really good and far beyond MTP.
Of course, I am still missing good old mass storage mode

WIFI or USB, choose one of them. USB 3 is actually pretty fast
USB C would be much faster than WiFi, get a better cable and/or interface for it.
I'm not sure if it suits you or not to compress the files on phone before transferring it, it makes the read from phone storage and write to HDD process a lot faster and by the way it keeps files chronically ordered when extracted.
I always use this trick for backing up my phone data but it's not perfect when transferring from HDD to phone storage because it's limited to 4 gb for a file, so I make a split 4 gb RAR files then transfer them to phone storage and use RAR apk to extract them.
The problem is ... that I have oryginall OP7Pro Cable which came with phone... I also have updated drivers + drivers for OP phone and this combination doesnt benefits me... Im Running our of empty space thats why im forced to ask for some live hacks

Nop,it just has a type c port but it is 2.0,I don't know which cable you got but I got only 2.0,it has only 4 lanes,2 for data transfer.
you surprised me right now... I thought that all usb C are 3.0 as this is standard for them... Yes my PC has usb 3.0. And I tried today one more time and it copied 190gb out of 250gb and there was no error on the screen...

You could backup your photos and videos to Google photos then free up the space in your phone
Transfer using usb 3 port
I would have cut and paste. That way when it fails, only the non copied files are left and you can begin it again without starting over.
I never had a reliable connection with direct cable Copy and paste. I usually go with FTP(filezilla + Solid explorer FTP) for stable copying of files. Speed is also very good.
KEep in mind to keep the screen on for 30 min.. sometimes the connections breaks if the screen goes off..
Use Oneplus switch to create a backup, this will put everything into one folder, the compress the folder into a single zip file. This will at least fix the issue error mid transfer.
Just upload it some where much better. Then download when pc....
